Rebels looking beyond borders

September 29, 2019 | News | No Comments

The Melbourne Rising are set to play games in Adelaide and Hobart in the coming NRC seasons, as part of a new partnership with the southern states.

The Melbourne Rebels announced a new arrangement forged with the Tasmanian Rugby Union and South Australian Rugby Union to help grow their community bases, with the NRC a key part of that plan.

Further down the chain, the program will also involve initiatives like coaching visits and corporate support.

Nick Ryan, Melbourne’s general manager of professional rugby and pathways, said they had already looked into locking in an NRC game in Adelaide for the 2018 season, with Hobart a likely addition in 2019.

The Rising already play one of their home games in regional Victoria, with the rest played at suburban grounds in Melbourne.

“We’re currently in discussions with South Australia rugby around venues and dates for this year’s NRC campaign and looking to bring that to closure in the next few weeks,” he told RUGBY.com.au.

“We probably see Hobart more for 2019 and Adelaide for 2018, because we’ve committed to taking a game to regional Victoria.

The NRC is a more practical way to engage fans in regional Victoria and interstate.

“We want to bring excitement and colour to our NRC campaign if we’re trying to hit developing markets and grow our rugby program with some good community initiatives..

The new deal struck with the two states is targeted at clubs and schools, with former Rebels Luke Burgess and Alex Rokobaro helping to scout talent and liaise between the states.

“I think from our point of view, sitting in my chair of talent identification, (with Luke and Alex) using their contacts and networks on the ground, there may be some potential athletes playing other codes down there.

“We’re very open minded if there’s someone that wants to give rugby a go personal characteristics be crazy not to have a look.”

All three states are traditional AFL strongholds Ryan said they needed to look further to try and develop more rugby talent.

“The three states are quite aligned in terms of they’re the little brother in their respective markets,” he said.

“We certainly understand the challenges and we feel like our experience in this market down here will help us generate small wins and work with the broader community to try and help young boys and girls into rugby.

“That’s really the essence of the partnership, to assist in growing participation.”

Congratulations are in order for Princess Beatrice and partner Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi, with news of their engagement breaking just minutes ago.

As was confirmed by both Buckingham Palace and the Duke and Duchess of York via Twitter, Princess Beatrice and her property tycoon beau are set to tie the knot.

According to the palace’s official announcement, which they themselves had posted to the social media platform, the newly-engaged couple became engaged while vacationing in Italy earlier this month, with their nuptials anticipated to take place some time in 2020.

With the palace confirming that more details surrounding their royal wedding are soon to come, we wait with bated breath and filled with excitement for yet another royal wedding!

Following the palace’s official announcement, they had also issued a statement on behalf of the newly-engaged couple in which they express their excitement for the happy occasion: “We are extremely happy to be able to share the news of our recent engagement. We are both so excited to be embarking on this life adventure together and can’t wait to be married.”

In addition to the sweet words in their initial statement, the couple went on, issuing yet another comment on their impending nuptials of the Duke and Duchess of York’s Twitter page: “We share so many similar interests and values and we know this will stand us in great stead for the years ahead, full of love and happiness.”

Of course, sisters being sisters, Princess Eugenie also wanted to send well wishes to her sister and her newly-minted fiance, sending her very own congratulations via her official Instagram account.

“Beabea – wow! I’m so happy for you my dearest big sissy and dear Edo. It’s been a long time coming and you two are meant to be…” And much to our delight, her congratulatory posts came with a whole lot of photographic evidence captured by her of the newly-engaged couple, with a number of them putting Princess Beatrice’s gorgeous engagement ring on full display.

The princess’s mother, Sarah Ferguson, also pitched in with posting photographs from her daughter’s engagement, as any proud mother would.

According to the Duke of York’s official website, Mozzi designed the ring—which features a round brilliant cut diamond cushioned between two rectangular baguette diamonds—in collaboration with the British jewellery designer Shaun Leane. No further details on the diamond yet, so watch this space.

But what we do know is who designed the dress in Princess Beatrice’s engagement portraits, and it’s none other than Australian label Zimmermann, selecting their Allia floral print linen dress for their shoot, as identified by Metro UK. We love to know that Australia had some small part in the happy occasion!

The Inter forward was asked about his compatriot, who has not played for the club since losing the captaincy last month

Lautaro Martinez said it is up to Inter team-mate Mauro Icardi to resolve his problems amid the former captain’s continued absence.

Icardi hit out at Inter’s treatment of him in an explosive social media post after he was stripped of the captaincy last month.

The 26-year-old star has not played for Inter since he lost the captain’s armband to goalkeeper Samir Handanovic.

Icardi missed Friday’s 2-1 Serie A defeat away to Cagliari and fellow Argentinian Martinez – who had equalised for Inter – told Sky Sport Italia: “Mauro is very important for us, but we can’t do anything about it.

“It’s up to him to resolve his problems. All we can do is wait and try to win.”

Icardi – who is contracted to Inter until 2021 – has been linked with Italian champions Juventus, Napoli, Real Madrid, Barcelona and Manchester United.

With Icardi absent against Cagliari, Inter head coach Luciano Spalletti introduced centre-back Andrea Ranocchia as a striker with the visitors chasing a late equaliser.

Asked if Ranocchia’s introduction up front highlighted a lack of options, Spalletti appeared to take aim at Icardi.

“I can say the same things again, as if there’s a way of helping Inter and showing how much you care about Inter, then you should be on the field,” said Spalletti, whose Inter could lose third spot to city rivals AC Milan on Saturday.

They currently have a two-point lead over their fierce rivals, but have played one extra match heading into this weekend’s clash.

Inter are also set to take on Eintracht Frankfurt in the Europa League after taking down Rapid Wien 5-0 over two legs.

The Germany winger was in a bad place at the start of the season but has become one of the most dangerous players in Europe once again

Two things about Leroy Sane’s first season at Manchester City stand out as particularly strange now, more than two years down the line.

One is that some fans suggested that he was an unnecessary purchase, wondering whether the £47 million fee he commanded could have been spent better elsewhere.

The second thing is that Pep Guardiola once described Sane as ‘shy’.

Sane did indeed take a few months to show even flashes of his devastating best, but it has been a long, long time since anybody has said either of those two things.

The German takes a seemingly never-ending amount of self-belief into every game. With that allied to his natural pace, athleticism and mastery of a football he has already grown into an almost peerless Premier League danger man.

Sane managed five goals and three assists in his debut campaign, but since the start of last season he has more assists (24) than anybody else in England. Even adding on his comparatively meagre first-season haul, only Kevin De Bruyne (36) and Christian Eriksen (34) have more assists than he does (27) since he first arrived at City. And having hit ‘only’ five goals in 2016-17, he got 10 last season and has eight already this time around.

He is growing. When he pointed to exactly where Gabriel Jesus should pass the ball at Newport on Saturday he showed that he is not afraid to call the shots, and then take them.

Off the pitch he is certainly sure of himself. Too sure of himself for Joachim Low, who left him out of Germany’s World Cup squad partly because of perceived attitude problems and an incompatibility with the rest of the team.

That omission seems to follow Sane around even now but history suggests it is a weight that will hang heavier around Low’s neck.

Yet even if Low could have found a way to handle Sane better, as Guardiola seems to have managed, the World Cup-winning coach did not simply invent a problem out of thin air.

Sane’s City team-mates have at times been affronted by his nature, although a footballer with an ego is no rarity and you don’t necessarily need friends to perform at your best.

Of course, Guardiola has not always been happy with his attitude and, in fact, one source close to the City boss now says that the situation at the start of the season appeared “irreconcilable” at the time. Many expected Sane to hit the ground running for City having missed the World Cup, but it took several thinly-veiled public warnings from Guardiola and another omission – from the matchday squad for a Premier League game with Newcastle – to get the 23-year-old back to somewhere near his best again.

In fairness that came at a time of family upheaval, with Sane seemingly stuck in the middle of a family row, with his pregnant girlfriend on one side and his parents, who are also his agents, on the other.

The situation has clearly calmed down of late, with Sane, now a father, back in the kind of groove that has made him one of the hottest properties in Europe.

Yet Guardiola, perhaps tellingly, was careful to strike the right balance when asked about Sane’s evolution as a footballer ahead of his return to boyhood club Schalke on Wednesday.

In the same press conference that the Catalan wrapped up some lavish praise of Bernardo Silva with the words “I love him”, he struck a more sober tone when Sane was on the agenda.

“I think it’s a question for him, he knows exactly how he was at Schalke and now in Manchester,” the City boss said. “I have the feeling he improved a lot, but I always had the feeling he wants to be an incredible player. As we have seen with his potential, and with the age that he has, he can do it.

“It depends on him. To be consistent in every game and to improve what he can improve. He’s already an incredible player and he will be more incredible. It depends on him, like every player.”

Even last season – when Sane was named the PFA’s Young Player of the Year – he seemed capable of lurching between incredible highs and, admittedly rare, shocking lows.

Those days seem to be a thing of the past now, too, as he becomes an ever more consistently dangerous performer.

City recognise his fantastic abilities and also his value. They have been trying to tie him to a new contract since last season, but as yet they have had no joy.

Raheem Sterling finally signed his new contract in November, a couple of months before City would have had to “make a decision”, according to a high-profile source. Or rather, decide whether to sell or not.

There is still a full year to go before City will be in “make a decision” territory with Sane, and things always seem to change quickly when the winger is involved.

The former Manchester United and Chelsea manager had nothing but kinds words to say about the legendary ex-Arsenal boss

Jose Mourinho has ended his feud with former rival manager Arsene Wenger following the latter’s Lifetime Achievement award at Laureus World Sports Awards on Monday.

The pair have clashed in the past while they were both in Premier League management, with Mourinho branding the Frenchman a “specialist in failure”.

Wenger also pushed Mourinho during the Portuguese’s second stint in charge of Chelsea before he went on to manage Manchester United.

The pair are now enjoying some time out of the sport which has allowed for the adrenaline to settle, leading Mourinho to credit the Frenchman’s achievements despite his previous comments.

The 56-year-old had nothing but nice words to say about his former rival and claimed he was one of the best managers in the game.

“There were some episodes along the road,” Mourinho said in a recorded message at Monday night’s Laureus World Sports Awards.

“I can only speak by myself. I really enjoyed the competition. But the real respect is always there. He made lots of history in that football club.

“One of the best football managers in the history of football.”

Wenger guided Arsenal to a sixth-place finish last season, which was their worst Premier League result since they finished 12th in 1995.

However, the Frenchman was recognised for his award due to his commitment and success with Arsenal over a 22-year period where he won three Premier League titles and seven FA Cups.

The 69-year-old also helped Arsenal to the Champions League final in 2006, which they eventually lost to Barcelona.

Wenger only left the club in the summer of 2018 with Unai Emery coming in to replace him at the Emirates, but he is yet to take on another managerial job.

Mourinho also paid tribute to the Frenchman’s ability to guide his Arsenal side to an undefeated season back in 2003/04

“The nickname is there – the Invincibles,” he added. “Amazing. A coaching philosophy, the almost perfect team.”

This season, the Gunners are currently fifth in the Premier League, just a single point behind fourth-place Manchester United.

The north London club’s next game is against Southampton on Sunday in the league before a home clash against Bournemouth on February 27.

The fact that Hailey Bieber is technically already married to her husband, Justin Bieber, didn’t stop the model from making the most of her bachelorette party. The model’s party took place in Los Angeles overnight, ahead of her second wedding, which is reportedly set to take South Carolina by storm on September 30.

The pair, who officially tied the knot in September 2018 in a New York courthouse, plan to celebrate their union with family and friends this coming weekend, and People reports Kendall Jenner took it upon herself to take a break from walking the runway this fashion month, in order to throw her friend a party.

Prior to the event, People reports Jenner was spotted stocking up on bachelorette party supplies at a store called Hustler Hollywood. “She was laughing as she picked up classic bachelorette suppliers, including phallic-shaped straws and sex toys,” a source told the publication.

“Kendall planned the night for Hailey. They had dinner at Ysabel followed by dancing at Delilah,” another source told E! News. “There was lots of screaming and giggling. When Hailey saw everything she was dying laughing and got a big kick out of it all.”

Per E! News, the women had a private area reserved for the evening, where they were served appetisers and dessert.

“Hailey was sitting with all her girlfriends at a table and was cheersing drinks with a huge smile on her face,” the source shared with E! News of the celebration. “They were all drinking tequila cocktails. Hailey was dancing to the loud hip hop music with Maeve and Kendall for bit and they were loving it.”

Images from the bachelorette party have since surfaced on Instagram, with many of the event’s attendees taking to the platform with photos of Bieber in a short white dress paired with a veil, and a bejewelled purple goblet in hand.

According to E! News, Bieber’s figure-hugging, strapless dress was purchased from Oh Polly for just $82, and a stylist arrived at her home prior to the celebrations to help style her for the occasion. To see inside Hailey Bieber’s wild bachelorette party, scroll on.

“Wish lists, apparently. I never use them, but recently realised it’s the reason I have missed out on restocked items or even better, when the items you have been eyeing go on sale!” — Rebecca Shalala, style content editor

“Avoid impulsive buys by going through your wardrobe the night before and looking for gaps. What do you need? What are you missing (and are you missing it for a reason)? Heavily discounted clothes may be alluring, sure, but consider if you’d invest in the sale pieces full price and how many times you realistically plan on wearing them. Then, take the plunge and act quick — sales only last for so long!” — Jen Nurick, fashion features assistant

“Shop around. Different websites have different buys from the same labels so you’re getting a narrowed view of what is out there if you stick to one. When they have the same pieces – compare the price, factoring in shipping. Also, don’t ignore ‘first time shopper’ discounts. Most sites have them and they’re roughly 10-15 per cent.” — Alice Birrell, fashion features director

“Do your research, know your size in the brands you like and the cuts that suit your shape. Be a bit adventurous; after all, returns are usually free. Be smart with your purchases; is the item going to work hard for you in your wardrobe?” — Philippa Moroney, fashion editor and market director

“I always check the fabric of the garment and add products to my wish list to help stop those impulse purchases.” —  Dijana Maddison, deputy art director

“I have no method to shopping online! Half the time I’m buying things with very little thought while sitting on a train home, and on other occasions it will take me months to decide whether or not to commit to a piece (not to mention the constant influx of those ‘You forgot something in your cart!’ emails…).” —  Arquette Cooke, designer

“I find if I add to cart and don’t purchase, I end up forgetting about it. So my rule of thumb is to just impulse buy online and then return anything that doesn’t fit or isn’t quite right.  Also, particularly when it comes to shoes, I’ll buy two sizes knowing that I’ll return the one that doesn’t fit. That tactic works well particularly if you leave your online shopping to the last minute.” —  Remy Rippon, senior beauty and health editor

“I usually stick to brands that I know my size in or only purchase silhouettes with uncomplicated fits. This tends to save me from disappointment when trying on at home and the dreaded hassle of organising returns. I also avoid shipping costs at, well, all cost — I’ll either shop at sites that offer free shipping or always meet the minimum cart size to qualify.” — Julia Frank, digital editorial director

“I have two rules when it comes to online shopping: one, if you like something, buy it! I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought about a purchase a little too long, only to have it suddenly sell out worldwide. And two, always check an online store’s return policy. If the item you purchased doesn’t look great on, or doesn’t fit, you could end up paying almost half the cost of your item in shipping and returns at all. Or worse yet, you may not be able to return it at all and be stuck with a wardrobe full of unworn impulse purchases just like me. Keep your eyes peeled for free returns policies.” — Ana Eksouzian-Cavadas, digital writer

“Take note on fabrication, care instructions and size guidelines. Always add to your shopping bag so you can re-evaluate your choices later down the track (I tend to give myself a week). Wish lists are also great for the expensive items you might need to mull over for a while before taking the plunge. If it is sale, in your size and you can’t stop thinking about it then definitely purchase it. I have spent many a time kicking myself for not going through with the order then facing severe regret when it is no longer available.” — Kaila Matthews, market editor

“My number one tip, which is non-negotiable, is to create a perfectly curated wish list. This means when VOSN kicks off you’ll have a clear list of the items you want to shop already to be sure you land the best deals. My best tip is to have a look at the list of retailers here and start your wish list today.” — Danielle Gay, digital editor

“I like to think before I buy. If I’m still thinking about purchasing the item I had my eye on in the days that follow, I know I won’t have to suffer from buyer’s remorse.” — Angelica Xidias, associate digital editor

“Online shopping is one of the greatest inventions of all time. Even at 10pm on a Tuesday night you can browse virtual aisles for must-have items. My tip for purchasing online is always read the fine print on the fit information. Different brands have different fits and this intel is key to adding to your wardrobe seamlessly.” — Lucie Clark, associate digital editor

The shoes every woman should own before they turn 30

September 27, 2019 | News | No Comments

There is undeniably no better feeling than ringing in a new season with a much needed wardrobe update. And while it’s a given that you have a number of staple styles that transcend both the test of time and the limitations brought about by seasonal dressing, the same can be said for your collection of shoes. Think of these styles (read: the versatile mule, sandals and heeled boots) as the equivalent of those jeans you find yourself wearing all year round or that T-shirt you never want to take off. As such, we thought it only best to compile a guide to the shoes every woman should own by the time they turn 30. Scroll down to count how many pairs you’re yet to invest in.

Sandals
Sandals are a year-round staple therefore there is no excuse for you not to own at least one pair, but in all seriousness, you most definitely need multiple—think a casual pair for any warm weather vacation locations and a dressy pair for the resort bar.

Mules
The mule is once again taking the fashion set by storm as It Girls take to the streets outside some of your favourite shows sporting the staple style. Whether in a neutral hue or bold and bright colour, the mule has the ability to elevate even the most basic ensemble.

Ankle boots
Think of these as your go everywhere staples that provide not only comfort but a chic finishing touch to any outfit, especially in the cooler months. And don’t think you have to opt for plain black or tan, instead inject your wardrobe with a splash of print or unexpected finish to keep this staple interesting and fresh. If black is your thing though, no problem, look to cowboy boot hardware or sculptural heels for something a little different.

Stilettos
Take your basic jeans and T-shirt look from day to night or desk to dinner with help of a pair of classic stiletto heels. Varying in height and hue, this style is the perfect date night outfit addition.

Heeled boots
Most definitely a prerequisite in every closet, you can’t go wrong with a pair of heeled boots. For a summer option, try this season’s on-trend open-toed style.

Sneakers
Sneakers can currently be spotted on the feet of every single street style star in sight and for good reason, these versatile shoes are about as comfortable as they get and have the ability to dress down even the chicest ensemble. If you’re feeling bold, give the orthopaedic style—think chunky white joggers you’d find in your father’s closet—a run for their money.

Kitten heels
Elegant, feminine and the perfect go-to style, kitten heels can be worn with everything from your favourite denim jeans to your work-appropriate trousers or maxi dress for a look that screams chic.

Slides
Whether you’re a fan of the style or not, slides aren’t going anywhere anytime soon so why not invest in a pair of your own? But let’s be honest, we’re all rejoicing at the thought of being able to wear a comfortable pair of Birkenstocks wherever we see fit—thank you Olsen twins.

Loafers
Loafers are a classic style of shoe that have proven time and time again that they’re wardrobe staples, and if that wasn’t reason enough to invest in a pair of your own then their versatility should have you adding them to your cart pronto.
