Rumours are abound that the Red Devils could sack their manager, with one ex-Prem star claiming the former Gunners boss could be right for the job

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger would steady the ship at Manchester United if Jose Mourinho is indeed sacked by the club, according to Paul Merson.

The Mirror reports that Mourinho will be dismissed this weekend, regardless of the outcome of the Premier League visit of Newcastle United on Saturday.

Wenger has been without a job since leaving Arsenal at the end of last season following nearly 22 years in north London, during which time he won 10 major honours.

And Merson, an ex-Gunners midfielder, feels the Frenchman would ideally suited to sorting out the mess at Old Trafford.

“Seriously, that’s not the worst idea in the world,” he told Sky Sports. “You’ve got to look at what Wenger did.

“You don’t have to go out and buy £70m and £80m players with some of the gems he’s got over time. 

“It’s not a bad shout. Sometimes you just need a fresh start.”

Charlie Nicholas, the former Arsenal striker, added: “If Manchester United are serious about clearing up the football club they have to look at someone like that.”

United have not won any of their last four games including last weekend’s defeat at West Ham United, after which Mourinho slammed his players’ mentality.

Despite reports claiming Mourinho is destined to be sacked Merson feels the players are at fault for abandoning the Portuguese boss.

“I wouldn’t sack him,” he added. “They’ve got a serial winner there. No I don’t agree with it – I think the players are embarrassing.

“These players are a joke, an absolute joke. To get beat like they did to West Ham, seriously, they’re playing for the biggest club in the world.”

In response to the media speculation that Mourinho’s days at Old Trafford are numbered, Gary Neville unleashed an impassioned defence of the ex-Chelsea and Real Madrid tactician.

Neville, who played over 600 times for United and remains a self-professed fan of the club, says the club’s board are to blame for their current plight and Sky Sports colleague Jamie Carragher is in full agreement.

“He knows Manchester United better the anyone,” said the former England and Liverpool defender. “He’s as passionate as any fan, and he is a fan.

“Anyone loves it when a pundit speaks passionately because it is emotional and he’s not putting on an act.

“You couldn’t argue with anything that he said. I think there are more problems than just the board.”

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson appeared to be pushing Wednesday for an early general election after Parliament blocked a fast-track plan to approve his Brexit deal before Britain’s scheduled departure from the European Union on Oct. 31.

Lawmakers on Tuesday backed the substance of Johnson’s divorce deal but rejected plans to allow only three days of debate before final consideration of the legislation, saying it didn’t provide enough time for scrutiny.

The government is now waiting for the EU’s response on a possible extension of the Brexit deadline. European Council President Donald Tusk said in a tweet that because of the vote he would recommend that the other 27 EU nations grant Britain a delay in its departure to avoid a chaotic no-deal exit in just eight days.

Justice Secretary Robert Buckland told the BBC on Wednesday that Parliament’s failure to break the logjam means “we are left with the option of a general election. … That seems to me to be the only way to break this impasse.”

The good news for the prime minister was that lawmakers — for the first time since Britons chose in 2016 to leave the EU — voted in principle for a Brexit plan, backing a bill 329-299 to implement the agreement Johnson struck with the EU last week.

But minutes later, legislators rejected his fast-track timetable to pass the bill by 322 votes to 308, saying they needed more time to scrutinize it. The votes return the Brexit process back into grimly familiar territory: tortuous uncertainty.

The 17-year-old is expected to make it into the Southampton first-team in the next few months, but Ligue 1 clubs are beckoning him home

Marseille and Lille are interested in signing Enzo Robise from Southampton, but the Premier League side are determined to hold on to one of their most promising players.

Robise arrived at St Mary’s from Reims last year after he impressed the English side’s scouts while playing for France Under 17s. The 17-year old then signed his first professional contract in July which ties him to the club until 2021.

The young winger has made a big impact at Southampton already, showing to be a prolific goal scorer and creator in the Premier League 2.

Robise’s excellent displays in the Saints’ youth system has convinced many at the club that he is one of their top talents and is seen as capable of taking on a key role in the first team.

However, his displays in the youth team have only attracted interest from elsewhere, and the likes of Marseille and Lille are willing to offer him a route back to his homeland.

Southampton have no interest in letting him go, though, and even expect Robise to be given a chance in the first-team in the next few months.

And the Frenchman is happy with life in England so far.

“Before making the decision [to join Southampton], I hesitated a very long time,” he said to Onze Mondial in July. “Frankly, the change of language and the change of country made me think. I knew my habits were going to be broken. 

“After careful consideration, I understood that a move to another country could do me good. I was aware that this new adventure could develop me as a human, allow me to discover other things and learn a new language. Looking back, I think I was right to leave.

“I have already had the chance to train with the professionals. It’s special. At first, I had a hard time believing it. When the coach gave my name to join the group, I was stressed out. I thought: ‘It’s not possible, he did not say my name there’. 

“In my first training session, I struggled during the first 10 minutes, but then I got into it and I did good things… I hope to make my professional debut this season.”

With more tournaments than ever set to be played over the coming season, there is a whirlwind of movement around the esports world

FIFA 19 is out, the ePremier League has been revealed and EA Sports has announced there will be more FIFA esports tournaments this season than ever before.  

With a big year ahead, esports organisations have been working hard to sign the world’s best pro players under their brand and there have already been some big moves. 

There are also a few massive free agents, most notably FIFA Interactive World Cup 2017 champion Spencer ‘Gorilla’ Ealing. 

The Englishman left UNILAD earlier this year to join Tassa ‘Tass’ Rushan at FaZe but, after falling short at the eWorld Cup, Gorilla has decided to move again. He has yet to sign for a team but will undoubtedly be swamped with offers. 

Meanwhile, with UNILAD set to go into administration, Gorilla’s former team-mate Shaun ‘Shellz’ Springette could also be on the move. The PlayStation player is a huge Chelsea fan and it’s no secret he would be keen to represent them in the ePremier League. 

As for signed deals, Swiss Super League team FC Basel have possibly pulled off one of the biggest transfer coups in FIFA history with the signing of Gonzalo ‘Nicholas99fc’ Villalba. The Argentinian was one of the most consistent players last year and was heavy favourite to win the eWorld Cup but crashed out in the PlayStation semi-finals to Manchester City’s Marcus ‘Marcuzo’ Jorgensen. 

Being the first team to sign up Nicholas is an impressive feat and a defiant message of intent following on from the protest against esports which happened during their match with Young Boys, which saw controllers thrown onto the pitch. 

Meanwhile, one of the most popular FIFA teams, Hashtag United, have had a busy off-season. The team’s owner, Spencer Owen, revealed that they wanted to take the esport team in a new direction which will see all of their players based locally in England which led to their new signing, Henry ‘Honey Badger’ Blackmore.

The new strategy also meant the departure of August ‘Agge’ Rosenmeier – but the former FIWC champion has landed on his feet.  

Agge has returned to Denmark as the first ever FIFA player of North, the esports organisation belonging to FC Copenhagen. North already have a successful CS:GO team and like to appeal to their local fans in Denmark, making this the perfect move for both parties. 

Finally, there’s one other new team on the block, Team Ozil. The Arsenal star has decided to start his own FIFA team and hasn’t held back, signing FIFA Club World Cup champion Fatih ‘Ustun’ Ustun and Brazilian Pedro ‘PResende97’ Resende, who finished in the Xbox top eight at the eWorld Cup after being knocked out by eventual champion Mossad ‘MSDossary’ Aldossary. 

The champion himself has been linked with Team Ozil after the midfielder gave him box seats to the Gunners’ match with Manchester City but, for now, the Saudi Arabian is still with Rogue

Usain Bolt scored twice in a friendly as he hopes to land a first professional contract in football with the Central Coast Mariners.

Central Coast Mariners chief executive Shaun Mielekamp has stressed it is “too early to tell” if Usain Bolt’s two-goal showing in a friendly on Friday has persuaded the A-League club to offer him a full-time deal.

Eight-time Olympic champion Bolt, who retired from the track in 2017, is currently on trial with the Mariners as he bids to fulfil his dream of becoming a professional footballer.

He made his first start against Macarthur South West United and, despite missing several routine chances, the 32-year-old found the net twice in the second half to stake his claim for an offer ahead of the Mariners’ A-League campaign beginning next weekend.

“[It] just puts more attention on the discussion we would already have had,” Mielekamp told ESPN.

“It was always part of the programme to have him play this game and we will keep talking the way we have been the whole time.

“We have genuinely treated Usain like we would have any other trialist. He’s been training hard with us and he showed weaknesses, but he also showed his strengths and got two goals, so all credit to him.

“Whether it sways the outcome, it’s too early to tell. We will now liaise heavily with our sporting director Mike Phelan, who is due back in the country shortly.”

For his own part, Phelan was also cautious about Bolt’s long-term prospects with the Mariners despite his double.

“He is working hard, he is improving every day and he still has weaknesses which he is clearly aware of,” he told the Sensible Soccer website.

“[Friday’s performance] is fantastic, unbelievable, but I’ve seen lots of footballers in my time burst on to the scene and disappear just as quickly as they arrived.

“Not that I’m telling you or Usain anything he doesn’t know – as he’s said in his interview – but there’s a long way to go if he’s going to be a consistent professional footballer.

“Great start, yes. The best possible start, but that’s what it is – a start.”

The U.S. has yet to be challenged during World Cup qualifying games, but the team’s practice sessions are a different story

For the U.S. women’s national team in World Cup qualifying so far, the real competition has taken place not during the games, but on the training pitch instead.

Jill Ellis’ side has cruised in its first two games of the Concacaf Women’s Championship, defeating Mexico 6-0 and Panama 5-0.

Wednesday will very likely be more of the same as the U.S. closes out the group stage in Cary, N.C. with a game against Trinidad and Tobago, which has already lost to both Mexico and Panama.

While it may not face an in-game challenge until a potential date against Canada (who themselves have 14 goals scored and zero conceded in their first two games) in the tournament final, there is still a formidable group that the United States players must contend with: each other.

“Training is really hard,” midfielder Sam Mewis said. “I think that this group is so talented and so deep that we are sometimes our own best competition.”

Depth is an obvious strength for this USWNT side. There was fierce competition for spots on the team’s CWC roster, and then subsequent battles up and down the field for starting roles among the fortunate 20 who made the cut.

The quality on the team’s roster is most apparent during inter-squad scrimmages in training.

“We always say that our inter-squads, it’s impossible to play because you’re just faced up against someone who is literally doing the same role as you, and it’s really really challenging,” Mewis said.

“I think that’s why we are continuing to grow and get better every day, because we’re challenged so much in training by each other and I think that’s one of our best weapons.”

Ellis had no qualms with rotating her squad almost completely between her side’s first and second games, starting just two of the same 11 against Panama that lined up against Mexico three days earlier.

Part of the manager’s rationale was based on the reality of a tournament that will see the U.S. play five matches in less than two weeks, but another aspect was that Ellis still needs to evaluate her squad to determine which players are worthy of starting roles at the World Cup next summer.

Mewis is one of the players fighting to start in midfield, as is Rose Lavelle, who echoed her teammate’s sentiments about the difficulty of training compared to the team’s games so far.

“Sometimes honestly training can be harder [than games] because everyone is so good,” Lavelle said. “It’s super competitive and super tough but I think it helps prepare us for games perfectly.”

The U.S. is already in the semifinal and only needs a draw against Trinidad and Tobago to clinch first place in Group A, setting up a semifinal date against Group B’s second-place team with a spot in the World Cup at stake.

It can be difficult to approach matches like Wednesday’s, knowing that a win is almost guaranteed before kickoff. Lavelle says that avoiding complacency is simply a matter of mentality.

“We have to hold ourselves accountable and play as if it’s the same world-class opponents we’d be playing against if it’s in the World Cup,” the 23-year-old insisted.

“Maybe they are not the same caliber as some other teams but we still have to play like they are and hold ourselves accountable in that aspect.”

Trinidad and Tobago aren’t likely to offer the U.S. much resistance as Ellis’ side looks ahead to an all-important semifinal on Sunday in Frisco, Texas. There’s no doubt, though, that the U.S. will be put to the test between its final game in North Carolina and its first one in Texas. 

Sen. Amy Klobuchar is kicking off a “blue wall” tour this week, making stops in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, according to a schedule shared with POLITICO.

The Minnesota Democrat has centered her presidential bid on her ability to win back those states — once considered part of a blue wall of Democratic strength in presidential elections — that Donald Trump flipped in 2016.

Klobuchar, a moderate, leaned into her pragmatism at last week’s Democratic National Committee debate in Houston, telling voters that “if you feel stuck in the middle of the extremes in our politics and you are tired of the noise and the nonsense, you’ve got a home with me.”

The tour starts on Tuesday in Philadelphia, where Klobuchar will participate in the 2020 Workers Presidential Summit. On Wednesday, Klobuchar will stop in Pittsburgh, followed by events in Detroit and Milwaukee on Thursday. Her campaign said the senator would focus on economic issues, particularly investing in infrastructure and strengthening rural and agricultural communities.

But Klobuchar, who launched her presidential bid in February, has struggled to break out of the sprawling Democratic primary field, averaging just 1.2 percent in national polling, according to RealClear Politics.

In Houston, Klobuchar drew a strong contrast between herself and the progressives on the debate stage, telling Sen. Bernie Sanders that she had “read” his Medicare for All bill and that on “Page 8 … it says that we will no longer have private insurance as we know it.”

“I don’t think that’s a bold idea,” Klobuchar said. “I think it’s a bad idea.”

The DFB kept faith in a man who oversaw global glory in 2014 despite a horror show in Russia, a decision which still surprises a former star

Michael Ballack was surprised to see Germany coach Joachim Low keep his job following Die Mannschaft’s World Cup debacle.

Germany’s defence of the trophy they won in Brazil four years ago ended with a whimper, with Low overseeing the nation’s first opening-round exit since 1938.

However, the German Football Association (DFB) opted to stick with Low, a decision that caught former captain Ballack – who won 98 caps for his country – off guard.

“I was surprised as well as many other people that he kept his job,” Ballack told Deutsche Welle. 

“For a long time he worked with the team and sometimes you should say that things don’t work anymore when you’re so long with a certain team.

“As an outsider, I wished for German football that Low had gone out on top, because when you have talented players you shouldn’t talk about other things, which was the case before the World Cup.”

Ballack feels that a more thorough review should have been undertaken of Low’s performance and called for reforms to be made within the DFB.

He added: “The World Cup was a huge disappointment and there were reasons for that. 

“You should analyse it, really, and not just say ‘we will analyse that’ when you have already made the decision to keep the coach. That’s not a real analysis.

“There should not just be one person who is making these decisions. There should be more people in the German federation and a better structure. 

“I think they can improve this for sure. But this has nothing to do with the performance on the pitch. That’s an excuse for players sometimes, but we shouldn’t forget these things.”

Ballack also urged Germany to move on from the ongoing furore surrounding Mesut Ozil’s international career.

The Arsenal playmaker retired from Germany duty after the World Cup and accused the DFB of discrimination against his Turkish heritage in doing so.

“No one needs that before the World Cup and no one needs that in general, that discussion,” Ballack said. 

“He [Ozil] made the decision he did, we have to accept it and the German national team has to move forward.”
