Behind them, is a man slapping his head and screaming in horror as he looks at them, terrified of what had just happened.

Christian Horner admits Red Bull will need “something different happening” in order for it to taste victory again by the end of the 2016 Formula One season.

Daniel Ricciardo came 0.4s close to winning last weekend’s Singapore Grand Prix, which would have been Red Bull’s second success this year after Max Verstappen’s stunning debut for the team in Barcelona.

The Milton Keynes-based outfit should have actually won in Monaco as well, but for a costly pit stop error that denied Ricciardo. Given Red Bull’s power deficit to Mercedes, the Australian had singled out Marina Bay’s tight and twisty venue as his best chance to make the most of its efficient RB12 chassis.

“[Daniel] got pretty close, he got within half a second and we beat one of the Mercedes fair and square,” Horner said. “Hopefully opportunities will present themselves over the remaining six races.

“But Mercedes have been so strong at every venue, it’s going to rely on something different happening. Weather conditions, tyre degradation, something like that.”

Red Bull is the only team to have defeated Mercedes in 2016, though Verstappen’s record-breaking success in Spain came after both Silver Arrows took each other out on the opening lap.

Ferrari’s focus on Mercedes, not Red Bull

November 28, 2019 | News | No Comments

After a tough British Grand Prix weekend for Ferrari, Maurizio Arrivabene insists the team’s focus remains on challenging Mercedes for the title, and has not swtiched to fending off the growing threat from Red Bull.

The Scuderia was comprehensively outperformed by the Milton Keynes-based outfit at Silverstone last weekend, from qualifying pace to long runs during the race.

As the 2016 F1 campaign reaches the mid-season mark, Ferrari trails Mercedes by 131 points in the Constructors’ championship and has Red Bull breathing down its neck six points behind.

“I think the fact that Red Bull has performed very well is good for Formula One, it’s good for the competition, for the show,” Arrivabene offered. “I still think that our target is Mercedes and not Red Bull.

“At this stage of the season if I say we are going to give up, it’s not correct. We need to be focussed and in terms of problems, bad luck, and everything that we have already had, we are at the top in terms of points, and I hope that… we start to get better but to say that we are giving up, not at all.”

Besides Ferrari’s lack of pace – and downforce according to Kimi Raikkonen – the Maranello team’s progress was once again hampered by poor reliability when Sebastian Vettel had to take a new gearbox ahead of qualifying.

As a result, the four-time world champion had to drop five places on the grid for the second consecutive race, having a similar issue in Austria.

“This problem penalised a lot Sebastian,” said Arrivabene of the failure. “It’s the third time that we have this problem and I think it’s a concern. It’s something that we need to resolve as soon as possible.”

Williams can make big leap in 2017 – Symonds

November 28, 2019 | News | No Comments

Pat Symonds believes Williams is capable of making a major step forward in 2017 as part of the new aerodynamic regulations.

After consecutive third place finishes in the constructors’ championship, Williams is currently involved in a close battle for fourth place with Force India, with its advantage cut to 19 points after the British Grand Prix. Chief technical officer Symonds says the less competitive season so far is due to Williams not matching the improvements of others but he is confident the team can make a much bigger step next year.

“I think that most of our competitors improved more than we expected,” Symonds told the official F1 website. “We made the improvements that we more or less had expected to make. We probably didn’t set the targets high enough. Some of our competitors have improved a lot.

“But a huge factor also was that the power units got much more equal – and that is eroding some of the advantage that we had…”

Asked what that means for 2017, Symonds replied: “It just gets harder.

“But on the other hand it is also an opportunity. The 2013 car was aerodynamically very poor. The 2014 car was a major step forward under the new regulations and I have no reason to believe that we can’t do it again.”

And Symonds doesn’t feel Williams has been overly disadvantaged by the late confirmation of the 2017 regulations so far, although he believes the bigger teams will naturally be able to work on more concepts.

“Not everything was confirmed in the normal time frame – but everybody knew what was coming. The minor little changes that we had recently really are the small bits that come out when you look at the details. In terms of the aerodynamic definition of the car, we were able to go on with that in February time.

“As for the ‘halo’ device, obviously we don’t know exactly where that is going, so we have to catch up with that – but it’s not fundamental.

“So no pain, but I still stand by what I said: the later the regulations come out, the more it favours the big teams as they have a lot of people to look at different areas. That does hurt us. But in actual fact we knew the outline of the car in February, so I am reasonably comfortable.”
