The Dane injured his ankle in a heavy crash at Eau Rouge during the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday, limping away after the impact which severely damaged his Renault. Magnussen was taken to hospital for precautionary checks in Belgium before being released following the race.

Magnussen had further checks in Denmark which he said showed he would be fit to race in Monza this weekend, subject to final approval from the FIA. On Thursday morning in Italy, Magnussen was given clearance and can take part in the race weekend as normal.

Force India at level to target former champions

Force India is now competitive enough to show in an interest in former champions such as Jenson Button, according to Otmar Szafnauer.

Button was linked with a move to Williams before announcing he will stay at McLaren but not race in F1 next year as Stoffel Vandoorne takes his seat. During the announcement, Button made clear he had also received a number of offers from other F1 teams to continue racing. With Mercedes, Red Bull and Ferrari all having secure line-ups, Szafnauer suggested interest was shown by Force India.

Asked if that shows the level the team has now reached as one of the best teams behind the top three, Szafnauer told F1i: “Yeah and some of the races we’re not that far behind them.

“I mean, yes at points we are far behind the top three, but in the races that suit us sometimes we are right there with them and sometimes beating them on track. Baku comes to mind and Spa comes to mind, that’s not just one fluke. We’re not that far off, the car is pretty good.”

And Szafnauer acknowledges being in a fight with the biggest teams in the sport on occasion then helps with negotiations such as those taking place with Sergio Perez’s backers at present.

“Yeah with sponsors for sure. Showing them what we can do with the limited resources that we have, we can fight with those guys and then hopefully that will rally the sponsors to give us even more so we can fight even harder.”

Williams has revealed both Valtteri Bottas and Felipe Massa were hampered by software issues during qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix.

Massa was actually quickest in Q1 after needing an extra set of supersofts to progress, and both drivers made it through to the final part of qualifying. However, Bottas could only qualify eighth – behind both Force Indias – and Massa was slowest of the ten runners after a lock-up at La Source.

Williams confirmed after the session that both of its cars were hurt by an engine software issue, which Mercedes High Performance Powertrains (HPP) is now investigating. The team says the problem prevented it from running its qualifying mode and cost it lap time, estimating Bottas should have qualified in sixth place ahead of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg.

Although hampered by the issue in qualifying, Williams is confident the problem will have no impact on its race pace.

Williams is currently locked in a tight battle with Force India for fourth place in the constructors’ championship this season, holding just a 15-point advantage in the standings ahead of this weekend’s race.

There are ways to make yourself heard and this CRPF soldier has taken it to a different level. A video of a CRPF jawan posted in Chhattisgarh threatening to follow in the footsteps of “Paan Singh Tomar”, a soldier-turned-rebel, in protest against authorities in his native Hathras in Uttar Pradesh “not taking action” in his farm land dispute has gone viral.

In the clip, the jawan identifies himself as Pramod Kumar posted as a constable with the 74th battalion of the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) in naxal-hit Sukma district.

Vettel: Suzuka shows clear Ferrari progress

November 27, 2019 | News | No Comments

Sebastian Vettel says Ferrari’s performance in the Japanese Grand Prix shows the team has made clear progress since before the summer break.

Ferrari has slipped behind Red Bull in the constructors’ championship, with the recent one-two for Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen in Malaysia particularly costly. However, having finished fourth overall from sixth on the grid and with good race pace, Vettel says the comparison with races earlier in the season shows how much Ferrari has improved.

“I think there’s been a lot of positives this weekend,” Vettel said. “Despite the penalty, the qualifying was very strong, the pace of the car was good in the race as well, we were probably the second quickest car out there. So a lot of positives.

“For sure, not entirely happy because if the podium’s there for grasp and you don’t take it then it always feels a bit disappointing. But as I said, a lot of positives. If you compare here to Silverstone, which in terms of track characteristics is similar, plus the fact it was quite windy, stuff like that, I think we’ve improved a big amount since that time.”

Vettel said high tyre degradation cost him in the fight with Lewis Hamilton in Suzuka as the Mercedes undercut the Ferrari, but Vettel says the team’s strategy was not at fault on this occasion.

“I think Lewis had a very good out-lap but I ran into traffic and I lost I think one and a half seconds at the beginning of the lap, just because I couldn’t get past. I don’t know who it was who let me past, one of the Manors, who let me past him at Turn 11, which is low grip already, so I came there locked up behind him and lost another chunk. Which I think all led to the fact that we came out behind even though we were convinced we should come out in front.”
