McLaren hails ‘stonking’ lap from Alonso

November 23, 2019 | News | No Comments

It feels like it’s been a very long time since McLaren had anything to smile about. But Fernando Alonso’s Q1-topping lap on Saturday sparked cheers all around Silverstone.

Alonso gambled on going out at the end of the first round of qualifying on supersoft tyres, despite a track wet from persistent light rain. He timed the start of his final run to perfection and ended up beating the rest of the field by 1.314s.

It’s the first time McLaren have headed a qualifying segment since the 2013 Indian Grand Prix, when Jenson Button was fastest in Q1.

“Fernando drove a stonking lap,” beamed McLaren’s sporting director Eric Boullier. “It was almost too close for comfort, he nearly didn’t get his Q1 lap in.

“Having crossed the line just in time, he made good his opportunity by totally nailing it. It was good to see. The crowd’s cheers were great to hear – our support here is simply fantastic.”

“We took advantage of a track that was on the limit at that moment,” remarked Alonso. “Even if it’s just for one moment, to be up there at the top of the time sheets feels good.

“I think people need sometimes to see McLaren back on top of the times,” he added. “I saw people in the grandstands excited [and] heard them cheering.

“It’s good for the guys in the garage as well. They deserve it as they have been working so hard these past couple of years.”

  • Qualifying: Hamilton on pole ahead of Raikkonen and Vettel

While Alonso will start Sunday’s race from the back of the grid due to more power element penalties, his team mate Stoffel Vandoorne provided the team with even more cause for celebration.

The Belgian driver was in the top ten in every round of qualifying and made it into Q3. he will start the British Grand Prix from eighth place, the best grid position of his F1 career to date.

“To take part in Q3 at Silverstone was a bit unexpected,” he admitted. “But I’ve been working very well for the past couple of races, and we’ve clearly seen the improvements.

“It’s obviously a pretty good feeling to have made that extra step,” he said. “I think the mixed conditions really helped us today … We maximised every chance we got.”

“Stoffel has been very quick all weekend,” said an ebullient Boullier. “It was great to see him duly get it all hooked up so well here today.

“It’ll be interesting to watch our drivers tomorrow,” he predicted. “Rain or shine, they’ll both be giving it their all.

“Fernando will surely make rapid progress in the early laps. Stoffel will be striving to score his first world championship points of the season. Bonne chance!

Responding to Climate Change from the Grassroots Up

November 23, 2019 | News | No Comments

GUNTHORPES, Antigua – As concern mounts over food security, two community groups are on a drive to mobilize average people across Antigua and Barbuda to mitigate and adapt in the wake of global climate change, which is affecting local weather patterns and by extension, agricultural production.

“I want at least 10,000 people in Antigua and Barbuda to join with me in this process of trying to mitigate against the effects of climate change,” Dr. Evelyn Weekes told IPS.

“I am choosing the area of agriculture because that is one of the areas that will be hardest hit by climate change and it’s one of the areas that contribute so much to climate change.

“I plan to mobilize at least 10,000 households in climate action that involves waste diversion, composting and diversified ecological farming,” said Weekes, who heads the Aquaponics, Aquaculture and Agro-Ecology Society of Antigua and Barbuda.

She said another goal of the project is “to help protect our biodiversity, our ecosystems and our food security” by using the ecosystem functions in gardening as this would prevent farmers from having to revert to monocrops, chemical fertilizers and pesticide use.

Food security is a growing concern, not just for Antigua and Barbuda but all Small Island Developing States (SIDS), as changing weather patterns affect agriculture.

Scientists are predicting more extreme rain events, including flooding and droughts, and more intense storms in the Atlantic in the long term.

Weekes said the projects being proposed for smallholder farmers in vulnerable areas would be co-funded by the Global Environment Facility Small Grants Program (GEF SGP).

“Our food security is one of the most precious things that we have to look at now and ecologically sound agriculture is what is going to help us protect that,” Weekes said.

“I am appealing to churches, community groups, farmers’ groups, NGOs, friendly societies, schools, etc., to mobilize their members so that we can get 10,000 or more people strong trying to help in mitigating and adapting to climate change.”

Dr. Weekes explained that waste diversion includes redirecting food from entering the Cooks landfill in a national composting effort.

“Don’t throw kitchen scraps in your garbage because where are they going to end up? They are going to end up in the landfill and will cause more methane to be released into the atmosphere,” she said.

Methane and carbon dioxide are produced as organic matter decomposes under anaerobic conditions (without oxygen), and higher amounts of organic matter, such as food scraps, and humid tropical conditions lead to greater gas production, particularly methane, at landfills.

As methane has a global warming potential 72 times greater than carbon dioxide, composting food scraps is an important mitigation activity. Compost can also help reconstitute degraded soil, thus boosting local agriculture.

Pamela Thomas, who heads the Caribbean Farmers Network (CaFAN), said her organization recently received approval for climate smart agriculture projects funded by GEF.

“So we intend to do agriculture in a smart way. By that I mean protected agriculture where we are going to protect the plants from the direct rays of the sun,” Thomas, who also serves as Caribbean civil society ambassador on agriculture for the United Nations, told IPS.

“Also, we are going to be harvesting water…and we are going to use solar energy pumps to pump that water to the greenhouse for irrigation.”

CaFAN represents farmers in all 15 Caribbean Community (CARICOM) countries. Initiated by farmer organizations across the Caribbean in 2002, it is mandated to speak on behalf of its membership and to develop programmes and projects aimed at improving livelihoods; and to collaborate with all stakeholders in the agriculture sector to the strategic advantage of its farmers.

“If a nation cannot feed itself, what will become of us?” argued Thomas, who said she wants to see more farmers moving away from the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides and begin to look towards organic agriculture.

Antigua and Barbuda led the Caribbean in 2013 as the biggest per capita food importer at 1,170 dollars, followed by Barbados at 1,126 dollars, the Bahamas at 1,106 dollars and St. Lucia at 969 dollars.

Besides the budget expense, import dependency is a source of vulnerability because severe hurricanes can interrupt shipments. As such, agriculture is an important area of funding for the GEF SGP.

GEF Chief Executive Officer Dr. Naoko Ishii, who met with the Caribbean delegation during the United Nations Conference on Small Islands Developing States held in Apia, Samoa from Sept. 1-4, had high praise for the community groups in the region.

“I was quite impressed by their determination to fight against climate change and other challenges,” Ishii told IPS. “I was also very much excited and impressed by them taking a more integrated approach than any other part of the world.”

The GEF Caribbean Constituency comprises Antigua and Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, Cuba, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Suriname.

Ishii was also “quite excited” about the participation of eight countries in the Caribbean Challenge Initiative, a large-scale project spurred on by the Nature Conservancy, which has invested 20 million dollars in return for a commitment from Caribbean countries to support and manage new and existing protected areas.

Member countries must protect 20 percent of their marine and coastal habitats by 2020. The Bahamas, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Saint-Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint-Lucia, Grenada, Antigua and Barbuda as well as Saint-Kitts and Nevis are already involved in the project.

Ishii said that a number of countries involved in the Caribbean Challenge have been granted GEF funds and there are four GEF projects supporting the Caribbean Challenge.

These are durable funding and management of marine ecosystems in five countries belonging to the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS); building a sustainable national marine protected area network for the Bahamas; rethinking the national marine protected area system to reach financial sustainability in the Dominican Republic; and strengthening the operational and financial sustainability of the national protected area system in Jamaica.

Kevin Magnussen said that he hadn’t been surprised by the announcement that he and team mate Romain Grosjean would be retained by the Haas F1 Team for 2018.

The news emerged in an interview with the Formula 1 website the week before the Hungarian Grand Prix.

“We will run with the same drivers that we have this year again next year,” Gene Haas was quoted as saying. “That is a given.”

Despite the low key way in which the news came out, Magnussen said he had been well aware of his secure situation for 2018.

“I knew when I signed the contract that it was two years, so it’s not news for me,” Magnussen said. However, he was pleased that it was now out in the open.

“I think it’s important for the team and for myself, because hopefully we will have no more of these kinds of questions.”

  • Haas to retain Grosjean and Magnussen in 2018

It’s the first time that the 24-year-old has enjoyed this sort of job security. His time at McLaren and Renault always seemed to be teetering on the edge of coming to an end at any moment.

“It’s a nice situation,” he agreed. “For the two seasons I’ve done in Formula 1 it’s been frustrating to talk about contracts every race.”

Magnussen has been praised by the Haas team management for his work at the squad since joining at the start of 2017.

“He can score points,” Haas said simply. “And that was the key for bringing him on board. Kevin can grab points and Romain can too.”

Magnussen last finished in the points in Baku; Grosjean was in the top ten in Austria. However the last two rounds at Silverstone and the Hungaroring proved pointless for Haas.

That’s caused them to lose ground on Toro Rosso in the constructors championships. They’re also coming under threat from Renault. But team principal Guenther Steiner is confident about the team’s prospects in the second half of 2017.

“The midfield is so close that it can go either way every weekend,” he told Ekstra Bladet newspaper.

“In Austria we were really good so it goes up and down,” adding that things were wide open for the next races at Spa and Monza. “I wouldn’t jump to conclusions,” he said.

US Marine Charged with Murder in Philippines

November 23, 2019 | News | No Comments

Joseph Scott Pemberton, a U.S. Marine, has been charged by Philippines prosecutors with murder for allegedly killing Jennifer Laude, a 26-year-old transgender Filipina woman, in October of this year.

Laude was brutally beaten and murdered in the port city of Olongapo on October 2 and Pemberton was the last individual seen with her in the hotel where she was later found. Her death at the suspected hands of a U.S. soldier sparked a wave of protests across the Philippines and #justiceforjennifer became a trend topic on social media that focused both on the treatment of members of the transgender community and the negative consequences of the U.S. military presence in the country.

“We filed a murder case,” said Emilie Fe delos Santos, head of the public prosecutor’s team. “You can see the kind of cruelty she endured, the injuries she sustained.”

The government’s case, she added, was strong case. “It’s a capital offense so there will be no bail. There was aggravated treachery, abuse of superior strength and cruelty.”

Harry Roque, a lawyer representing the victim’s family, said, “This is not an ordinary murder. This is heinous because she was beaten up.”

Marilou Laude, Jennifer’s sister, told reporters: “We will not accept anything less than justice.”

Under an agreement with the Filipino government, Pemberton will remain in the custody of the U.S. military during the trial, which will be heard by a judge, not a local jury.

As Reuters reports:

The crime has added to pressure on the government of President Benigno Aquino to renegotiate the U.S.-Philippine Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA), testing security ties as the two allies face growing tension in the South China Sea.

Manila and Washington signed the enhanced defense cooperation pact in April, allowing U.S. forces a greater and sustained presence in the Philippines for maritime security and disaster and humanitarian operations.

Nine American warships canceled port visits in October and November, after Pemberton’s arrest.

The trial court in Olongapo City handling the case is expected to issue an arrest warrant within the week, as well as an order to put Pemberton in jail.

Reaction to the news of the charges was gathering on Twitter:

Massa confused by dreadful Williams qualifying pace

November 23, 2019 | News | No Comments

Felipe Massa was at a loss to explain the reasons why Williams was completely defeated in qualifying for tomorrow’s Austrian Grand Prix.

The Brazilian and team mate Lance Stroll were outpaced by the entire field Saturday afternoon, save a pair of Saubers.

Massa pointed to the Williams FW40’s tyres as a possible culprit for the under-performance, although he could not say why the car’s rubber failed deliver.

“We struggled the whole weekend to make these tyres work when they are new,” said the man who was on pole in Austria three years ago.

“Just struggling massively. Today was really tricky in qualifying to make the tyres work, it’s really disappointing because we’re not supposed to be where we are.

“We’re supposed to be more in the front fighting the proper way.

“It’s strange, because on old tyres on the long run the car was behaving well yesterday, but just not on new tyres. We need to understand why.”

  • Bottas pips Vettel to pole for Austrian Grand Prix

Stroll, who was confident of following up his Baku podium with a good performance in the Austrian hills, echoed Massa’s disappointment.

“It’s just tough for us this weekend,” said Stroll.

“We’ve been trying to work on the balance and improve the car, but we’re simply losing time in the high-speed corners compared to some of the other cars.

“On the positive side I think our long runs were better than our qually runs – that gives us some hope going into tomorrow. But this was a hard day for the team.”

Williams FW40 has been revised ahead of Austria, and features changes to the front nose, sidepods and bargeboards.

But tech boss Paddy Lowe has not yet identified the source of the car’s fundamental lack of pace.

“We did a lot of work overnight trying to understand the pace from yesterday but none of the things we’ve tried really adjust the fundamental issue, so we need to go away and analyse that further to see where we are.

“On the positive side, when we ran high fuel yesterday we looked to be in our normal competitive position and so we’re hopeful we can make some progress during the race tomorrow.”

Felipe Massa bids farewell to Formula 1 this weekend and the Brazilian will be wearing a special tribute helmet for the special occasion.

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix will be Massa’s 269th F1 race in a career which started in 2002 with Sauber.

The 36-year-old has come up with a dedicated helmet design which blends the colors of Brazil and features the message “Thank you! I love all!” on the back.

Jolyon Palmer has offered his services to Williams for next season, according to the still-Renault driver’s father, Jonthan Palmer.

The French team slipped the British driver his pink sheet last weekend in Singapore as Carlos Sainz joins the yellow outfit for 2018.

Palmer responded positively however, achieving a career-best F1 finish on Sunday, concluding his Singapore GP in sixth place, a result which will hopefully boost his prospects for next season.

“I hope I can build on this confidence,” he said.

“Of course I want to stay in Formula 1, and there are other options. Whatever happens, happens.”

  • Palmer shines and clinches best-ever F1 finish

Palmer’s father, UK racing circuit mogul Jonathan, is hawking his son’s talents up and down the paddock at present.

The best opportunity is Williams, which is undecided on Felipe Massa’s future and whose short list is rumored to include Robert Kubica, Paul di Resta, Marcus Ericsson and now, Jolyon Palmer.

Palmer senior believes his boy could be a genuine contender for the coveted seat, if he can sustain his Singapore momentum in the upcoming races.

“A few good races and Williams might take notice,” said the former F1 driver who actually made his F1 debut with Williams back in 1983.

“Williams will want to take their best option and he has the chance to show he is that over the next few races.”

Max Verstappen managed to out-qualify his Red Bull team mate Daniel Ricciardo this weekend, for the eighth time this season.

The pair will start tomorrow’s Belgian Grand Prix alongside each other on the third row. Verstappen will be in fifth place, having finished nearly half a second faster than Ricciardo.

For the Dutch driver – who is unequivocally the star of the show as far as the huge number of fans at Spa-Francorchamps are concerned – the day was a definite success.

“It was good. I really enjoyed it, a bit like last year,” he said. “Of course last year was second position, but my lap today felt pretty similar.

“It was on the limit. I got all the sectors together, and not very often you have that. For me it was the perfect qualifying.

“It couldn’t have been better to be honest as I feel I put everything together and got the best performance out of the car possible.

“I am positively surprised we are so close to Ferrari,” he added.

But with the rows ahead packed out by Mercedes and Ferrari cars, Verstappen is keenly aware that he faces a difficult task in the race if the rain stays away.

  • Record-setting Hamilton dominates Spa qualifying

“Lewis was way ahead. But in the race I think we can be closer, so perhaps a good result is possible.

“It will be difficult to beat them,” he admitted. “I think we can be closer so perhaps a good result is possible. Our strength is in sector 2 so we will work even harder there to improve a bit. But in general the balance of the car was great

“You need a bit of luck as well. Anything can happen on this track,” he said. “It looks dry – hopefully it will change!” he added. “Let’s wait and see tomorrow.”

He said that the massive support from the masses of Dutch fans at Spa had really made a difference to his weekend.

“On my fast laps I was concentrating too much,” he said. “But on my in lap I could see the orange crowd and smoke from all the fans.

“It’s a good motivation because next to the track is all orange,” he chuckled.

“This is amazing to see. As I left the pit lane there was a guy on the fence in all orange waving me on. It’s awesome!”

Sainz in shock move to Renault for Malaysia!

November 23, 2019 | News | No Comments

Click:lion dance costume costumes

Carlos Sainz could be heading to Renault as soon as the Malaysian Grand Prix, according to reports in the European press on Saturday.

An exclusive story from German language website Motorsport-Total.com says that Sainz’ move from Toro Rosso is the linchpin of a complex deal centred on the break-up of the McLaren/Honda partnership.

Sainz had wanted to move to Renault last year. However Toro Rosso has been steadfast in insisting that the Spanish driver is under contract to them for another season. According to the latest reports, the Red Bull management has finally been persuaded to release him early.

If true, it will leave current Renault driver Jolyon Palmer out in the cold. It follows a frustrating season so far for the Briton. But that will just be the first of many shockwaves resulting from the deal, which was reportedly signed on Friday. It has also been approved by McLaren.

Highly rated Red Bull junior driver Pierre Gasly would take over from Sainz at Toro Rosso for the remainder of the season. The 2016 GP2 Series champion has been competing in the Japanese Super Formula Championship, waiting for an opening in Formula 1.

Engine ‘not the biggest factor’ in deciding Alonso’s future

However Gasly’s promotion might prove to be short-lived. According to Motorsport-Total.com, Honda protégé Nobuharu Matsushita is to participate in Free Practice 1 sessions with Toro Rosso. The Formula 2 driver could then get his full-time break in Formula 1 next season alongside Daniil Kvyat.

Matsushita had been working with McLaren as part of the Honda partnership arrangement. If he leaves Woking, Formula 3 European Championship leader Lando Norris is likely to take up his development place at McLaren.

The next domino expected to fall is Toro Rosso parting from engine partner Renault. Under the new deal, it will instead receive power units from Honda in 2018. And if all goes well, the senior Red Bull race team could then follow suit in 2019.

Toro Rosso’s switch clears a spot for McLaren to receive Renault power units. The team is desperate to end its current arrangement with Honda, which has been beset by chronic performance and reliability issues. Renault had wanted a ‘sweetener’ such as procuring Sainz to justify agreeing to the deal.

Toro Rosso will need McLaren to supply transmission units to work with the Honda power units. Red Bull management is banking on Honda finally overcoming its various issues within the next 12 months.

Switching to Renault power might enable McLaren to convince Fernando Alonso to stay at the team for another season. His current contract expires at the end of this year, and the two-time world champion has been evaluating his options for several weeks.

McLaren is likely to sign the contract with Renault on Monday. An official announcement is to be expected ahead of the Singapore Grand Prix race weekend.
