VATICAN CITY  — 

A scandal over alleged sexual molestation and abuse at the Vatican’s youth seminary is growing, with more former papal altar boys alleging inappropriate behavior by priests inside the Vatican walls.

Le Iene, an Italian investigative television program, plans to air the new allegations Sunday; the show provided the broadcast to the Associated Press ahead of time.

The Vatican announced in September that its criminal prosecutor was seeking to indict a former senior seminarian and the then-rector of the St. Pius X seminary on sexual abuse charges.

The announcement came two years after Le Iene first featured former seminarians who alleged that the senior seminarian, now a priest, had molested teenage boys who lived inside the Vatican and served as altar boys at papal Masses in St. Peter’s Basilica. The testimony suggested a series of priests, bishops and even a cardinal had covered up the case for years.

In the new program, several unnamed former altar boys alleged at least two more priests affiliated with the seminary kissed and fondled three other altar boys in the 1990s. In one case, an alleged victim said a priest sat him on his lap and fondled his penis. In another case, an alleged victim marveled how Le Iene had heard about things he had only told his confessor.

Coupled with previous testimony gathered by Le Iene, the impression given is that of a closed, religious atmosphere in which sexualized touching and groping were normalized for boys as young as 11.

In a statement ahead of the program provided to the AP, the Vatican press office said a decision on whether to issue indictments in the original case was “imminent.” The statement said any new elements or evidence of other crimes that emerge would be considered by Vatican prosecutors in a new investigation.

The case concerns the closed world of the St. Pius X youth seminary, located inside a palazzo just a few steps from the Vatican hotel where Pope Francis lives. It serves as a residence for about a dozen boys, ages 11 to 18, who serve as altar boys at papal Masses.

The seminary is run by a small Italian religious order, the Opera Don Folchi. The group has dismissed the allegations as “mud,” a “violent attack on the church” and nothing more than “calumny and falsifications.”

In his most recent Beyond Victory podcast, Rosberg sat down with his former Mercedes boss Toto Wolff.

On the subject of character and achievement, the German explained why in his opinion Verstappen was “like a narcissist, like you write it in the dictionary”.

Asked by Sky F1 to elaborate on the comment during last weekend’s Bahrain Grand Prix, Rosberg reiterated his view on Red Bull’s star driver, but insisted he meant it in a positive way

“Actually it was on the positive side,” said the former F1 driver.

“I was saying that was a very strong asset of his, because it gives you resistance in the very extreme world of Formula 1 if you really have that self-confidence and self-belief.

“I still stick with it. He has it,” added Rosberg.

“Because if you mess up six times, and on the seventh time, you still end up doing the same thing and you get it right, and the whole season turns around like it did last year, you’ve got to be pretty damn self-confident.”

If there’s anyone in this world who is embodying courage right now, it’s Shannen Doherty. That’s why her Courage Award at the American Cancer Society’s Giants of Science Gala couldn’t have been more fitting.

Clad in a fall-perfect navy velvet suit, the actress received the distinction from friend Sarah Michelle Gellar. And her speech left not a dry eye in the room as she spoke about her ongoing battle with breast cancer.

“For the last year and a half, cancer has been my teacher,” Doherty said in her speech. “It’s taught me what love, strength, friendship, and support truly looks like.”

“It’s opened my eyes to myself and it’s allowed me to not only share my journey with people but it’s actually allowed me to share my inner self with anybody who actually wanted to know what it was like,” she continued. “And the end result is that I am nothing but vulnerability and, to me, vulnerability is courage.”

The actress had her support squad there with her: husband Kurt Iswarienko, Chelsea Handler, model Anne Kortright, Dr. Lawrence Piro, Chris Cortazzo, and stylist Deborah Waknin-Harwin.

“You guys are my courage,” said Doherty of her loving friends and family. “You’re the wizard in the Wizard of Oz. I was the [Cowardly Lion] and I didn’t think I had courage and you all gave me my courage—and I thank you for that.”

The moment was made even more heartfelt, as it was the sixth anniversary of the death of Doherty’s father.

“He also had his own health problems, and I watched him face life with such joy and love—and it has just inspired me to be as much like my father as humanly possible, in his battle,” she confessed. “So, I want to accept this award, not for myself—I’m accepting this award for all the fathers out there who have taught your children to have courage, and I also accept it on behalf of every single cancer patient out there and all their caregivers.”

Lewis Hamilton says Mercedes’ W10 is “coming together”, but the Brit has urged his team to keep on pushing in light of the opposition’s performance.

Hamilton concluded his first week of pre-season testing with 58 laps in the morning session, but the cold and crisp conditions made it a tricky start of the day for the reigning world champion.

As the track warmed up, Mercedes undertook a series of runs on Pirelli’s softer tyres to gauge the W10’s grip and balance on the specific compounds.

“It was quite cold in the morning which meant that it was a little bit difficult with the tyres for everyone,” said Hamilton.

“In general, the car was feeling better today and is coming together. However, we still have to keep on digging deep, analysing the data and the changes that we are making.

“The reliability has been really solid which is a great showing of all the hard work that everyone in the factory has done.

“But we have to keep on pushing, the competition looks very strong.”
