Six wellness assists from super-fit Gabby Reece

January 12, 2020 | News | No Comments

If Gabby Reece is going to eat pizza, it’s not going to be one of those trendy, guilt-quashing ones made of cauliflower crust.

The cheesy, carb-laden food is not something the 6-foot-3-inch former pro beach volleyball player-turned-fitness guru typically indulges in.

But when she does, she wants the real thing: “I want an Italian making my pizza, something you’d find in New York or Chicago.”

Day in and day out, though, she’s into organic meat, stir-fries, salads and vegetables as well as the superfood-infused coffees her husband, pro surfer Laird Hamilton, is devoted to. Co-founder of XPT, a high-intensity fitness program, Reece, 50, is now expanding into podcasts: “The Gabby Reece Show” starts Jan. 20, and will feature experts in the fields of wellness, entertainment and medicine. “I always say I do not have answers, but I have a lot of questions and I’m willing to share my experiences in work, family and home life to start up the conversation,” she said. “I feel like we are all navigating a lot of the same things.”

“I encourage people to take a moment to place value on their well-being,” Reece told us. “It has to start there. It’s not about looking ripped. It’s about asking, ‘What’s the greatest thing I own besides my relationship with friends and family’? It’s your health. Place value on that.”

Here, Reece shares some ways of getting there.

1. Baby steps

I always honor that people don’t have the time or resources to throw at this. [Wellness] feels unavailable. People feel overwhelmed. They try to change too many things at one time. Take out your worst habit, one little thing you can do first. Make one change at a time.

2. Log out

It sounds so trite, but people should go to sleep. We’re on our devices all the time, and the blue light from them suppresses melatonin and affects sleep. Get the glasses to block it, or turn it off. These devices are a convenience, but we never get to disconnect. We’re distracted. We’re still biological, primal beings, and we need to connect with each other, to take a walk around the block, to get to bed.

3. Think before you eat

If we put something into our mouth, let’s understand why. Is it to nourish us, or because we’re hungry or stressed out or bored? Food is either real food and medicine, or it’s a drug and we’re using it to medicate ourselves. Sometimes we eat more than we need to because we don’t have the nutrients from what we are eating. The brain is like, “I haven’t gotten what I need.”

4. Coffee, water, fish, vegetables

Laird wanted to turn coffee into a performance beverage. I drink one every morning with our Superfood Creamer — healthy fats, no refined sugars — and it gives me sustained energy till lunch. Water is critical; most of us aren’t hydrated enough, and hydration is a really powerful thing in health. Lunch is a high-quality animal protein and lots of vegetables. We have three daughters, and I cook dinner every night — fish, a few sides of veggies, salad, sweet potatoes. Nothing elaborate.

5. You don’t have to love it

I was doing stand-up cycling with Laird the other day, uphills and hitting brakes, and it was really hard. I came through professional sports, so I’m connected enough in the understanding that you have to take the emotion out of it. It isn’t about wanting it every day but about creating an environment that you can be successful in.

6. Get out

I hate running, but I will go to the beach and run barefoot so I don’t pound my joints. Go in nature and have that moment where you are looking at a tree, a park, an ocean, if you’re near it. You don’t have to work-work-work hard. But you do have to move. Our bodies have primal patterns. So just take a walk. The kicker is, 90% of the deal is what you put in your mouth anyway. So if you watch that and manage your stress, you’re going to be OK. You won’t be a bodybuilder, but you’ll be fine.

Quake-stunned Puerto Rico gets another jolt

January 12, 2020 | News | No Comments

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico —

A magnitude 5.9 quake shook Puerto Rico on Saturday, causing millions of dollars of damage along the island’s southern coast, where previous recent quakes have toppled homes and schools.

The U.S. Geological Survey said the 8:54 a.m. (1254 GMT) quake hit eight miles southeast of Guanica at a shallow depth of three miles. It was followed by several aftershocks, including a magnitude 5.2 temblor less than two minutes later.

No injuries or deaths were reported, officials said.

Saturday’s quake occurred four days after a 6.4 magnitude quake in the same area and amid a spate of more than 1,200 mostly small quakes over the past 15 days, all at shallow depths.

Gov. Wanda Vázquez estimated damage from Tuesday’s earthquake at $110 million, with a total of 559 structures affected. She said her administration was immediately releasing $2 million to six of the most affected municipalities.

Vázquez is seeking a major disaster declaration from the U.S. government, which would free up more federal funds.

As a result of Saturday’s quake, Puerto Rico’s Electric Power Authority said outages were reported across much of the southern part of the island and crews were assessing possible damage at power plants. Officials said they also were going back to reassess all structures previously inspected, given the strength of Saturday’s quake.

Deputy Mayor Elizabeth Ocasio in the southern coastal city of Ponce told The Associated Press that officials closed the city’s downtown area and two other nearby areas because of weakened infrastructure.

“One building completely collapsed,” she said. “There is a lot of historic infrastructure in Ponce.”

Bárbara Cruz, a prosecutor who was in Ponce when the new quake hit, said concrete debris hit the sidewalk as buildings continued to crumble.

“Everyone is out on the street,” she said.

More landslides and damaged homes were reported, along with severe cracks on a bridge in the southwest coastal town of Guanica, where Aurea Santiago, a 57-year-old resident, said she saw big boulders falling on a nearby road.

“We have been through a lot, but what’s important is that we are alive, and people are helping us,” she said.

The quake, which initially had been calculated at magnitude 6.0, was the strongest shake since Tuesday’s magnitude 6.4 quake — the most potent to hit the island in a century. That temblor killed one person, injured nine and damaged or destroyed hundreds of homes and several schools and businesses in the island’s southwest region.

More than 4,000 people have been staying in shelters, many fearful of returning to their homes, and others unable to because of extensive damage.

The director of Puerto Rico’s Electric Power Authority ordered the temporary closure of the company’s largest plant, which crews had been inspecting for damage caused by earlier quakes.

The ground in southwest Puerto Rico has been shaking since Dec. 28, with more than 1,280 earthquakes, of which more than 100 were felt and more than 70 were of magnitude 3.5 or greater.

NASA reported Friday that the quakes had moved the land in parts of southern Puerto Rico as much as 5.5 inches based on satellite images before and after the temblors.

Víctor Huérfano, director of Puerto Rico’s Seismic Network, told the AP that he expects still more aftershocks as a result of the latest large one.

“It’s going to re-energize an unstable situation,” he said, adding that seismologists are studying which faults were activated. “It’s a complex zone.”

ATHENS, Greece —

Greece’s coast guard said 12 migrants were found dead in the Ionian Sea and 21 others were rescued after their boat took on water and sank. Searchers were looking for more survivors.

The deaths and sea rescues came southwest of the Greek island of Paxos, a coast guard representative told the Associated Press.

“The initial report is that 50 people were in the boat,” he said.

The coast guard said someone on the boat had called the 112 emergency number at 9:15 a.m. Saturday. At least four merchant ships, six coast guard ships and a helicopter were searching for survivors amid calm seas.

No further information about the migrants was released.

In other incidents involving Europe-bound migrants, authorities in North Macedonia reported Saturday that 62 migrants were discovered hiding inside freight trains at the border with Greece.

Border control teams that included officers from North Macedonia, Austria and the Czech Republic found 42 migrants during a routine inspection of a freight train in the town of Gevgelija on Friday. Thirty-eight of the migrants were from Morocco, police said.

Later Friday, another multinational team of officers discovered 20 migrants from Pakistan, Afghanistan, Morocco and Algeria in another freight train at the Gevgelija station.

All 62 migrants, including five minors, were taken to a detention center pending deportation to Greece.

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates —

Oman’s new ruler, Sultan Haitham bin Tariq Al Said, vowed Saturday to uphold his predecessor Sultan Qaboos bin Said’s foreign policy approach, which steered the Arab country through choppy Persian Gulf waters by balancing close relations with both the United States and Iran.

The new ruler, who was Oman’s culture minister, spoke after being named successor to Sultan Qaboos, the Middle East’s longest-ruling monarch whose death was announced Saturday. He died at the age of 79 after years of an undisclosed illness.

Sultan Haitham’s message to Omanis and the world was clear: Oman would continue down the path laid by Qaboos as a facilitator of peace.

“We will follow the same line as the late sultan, and the principles that he asserted for the foreign policy of our country, of peaceful coexistence among nations and people, and good neighborly behavior of non-interference in the affairs of others,” he said in his first public remarks as sultan.

The 66-year-old shook hands with family members and top security brass before witnessing ceremonial cannon fire. The Al Said family has ruled Oman since the 18th century, and once ruled over Zanzibar too, off the coast of Tanzania.

Oman sits on the southeastern tip of the Arabian Peninsula, with Iran to its east. It shares borders with Yemen, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

Sultan Qaboos shaped Oman’s policy of diplomatic balancing. Under his leadership, Oman was a facilitator of talks between adversaries Iran and the United States. Oman is a close ally of Washington and viewed as a valuable regional player.

Qaboos, who came to power nearly 50 years ago when he deposed his father in a 1970 palace coup, refused to join the Saudi-led coalition at war in Yemen and kept the country’s border with Yemen open. Oman has also played a conciliatory role between the Houthis and their Gulf enemies, hosting peace talks and facilitating prisoner exchanges.

Oman did not join a Saudi- and Emirati-led boycott of neighboring Qatar, and has maintained relations with rivals Saudi Arabia and Iran. The sultanate was the only Gulf Arab country that kept its embassy in Damascus open throughout Syria’s now 9-year civil war.

In 2018, the sultan hosted Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu in a surprise visit, further cementing Oman’s strategic ability to be a facilitator and even mediator.

In the capital Muscat, soldiers stood guard and troops stood with machine guns atop SUVs as Omanis gathered along a highway to see the motorcade carrying the sultan’s body for burial.

Thousands also gathered at the Sultan Qaboos Mosque where funeral prayers were held Saturday. The mosque is an architecturally stunning complex of white marble and manicured gardens that reflects how the sultan modernized his country without eschewing its cultural heritage or building towering skyscrapers like other neighboring Gulf capitals.

Following Islamic tradition, Qaboos was buried before nightfall. His successor was announced by afternoon Saturday.

“It is a sad day in Oman, but also represents a new beginning with a new leader,” a presenter on state TV said soberly.

The speed and manner in which his successor was named suggest the Al Said family wanted to project a sense of unity, continuity and stability as tensions run high in the Persian Gulf, particularly between the U.S. and Iran in the last days of Qaboos’ life.

“The need for an Omani ‘neutral space’ for dialogue and message passing is more important than ever,” Kristian Coates Ulrichsen, a Gulf expert at Rice University’s Baker Institute for Public Policy, said.

After Qaboos’ burial, state TV broadcast video from the intricate succession process.

The country’s Defense Council, in the presence of the Royal Family Council, was shown opening a sealed letter in which Qaboos names his choice for successor. The Defense Council then read the contents of the letter aloud before all those present in the meeting, announcing Haitham bin Tariq Al Said as the dynasty’s heir.

The Royal Family Council had called on the Defense Council to unseal the letter, according to Oman’s state news agency. Qaboos’ choice of successor was a closely guarded secret believed to have been known only to the sultan, who did not have any children.

According to Omani succession laws, the royal council could have met and selected an heir from among them, only consulting the letter if they could not agree within three days. Instead, they chose to defer to the letter and air its reading on Omani state TV — a move underscoring how beloved Qaboos was and which helps lend more legitimacy to his successor.

Haitham is a career diplomat who’d long been tapped as one of the front-runners for succession. His role as minister of national heritage and culture helped project Omani influence. Haitham is a cousin of Qaboos, according to Gulf media reports.

The Oxford graduate spent 16 years in various roles with the foreign ministry, starting in 1986. He was the ministry’s undersecretary for political affairs and its secretary general. He has sometimes also chaired Cabinet meetings.

Unlike other Gulf Arab rulers and their heirs, he has not overseen important defense and security portfolios. He has been described as quieter and less assertive than other members of the royal family.

Ulrichsen, the Gulf expert, said Haitham’s background in culture and heritage is another sign of continuity with Qaboos, whose love of culture and music was well-known.

The new sultan is known in international policy circles because of his interactions with world leaders and relations with other royal families, including Britain’s Prince Charles and his wife, Camilla.

This experience provided him with “the necessary political gravitas and foreign policy expertise to help steer Oman into a post-Qaboos era,” said Sigurd Neubauer, a Middle East expert, in an analysis for the Arab Gulf States Institute in Washington.

The new ruler of Oman faces monumental challenges in steering his country domestically as well.

There is discontent among youth in Oman over unemployment and the cost of living. Omanis protested the government as part of the wider Arab Spring unrest in 2011.

Oman has struggled to diversify its economy amid lower oil prices. Haitham, in addition to being culture minister, was in charge of the country’s Vision 2040 program that lays out strategies to make the country less reliant on oil and gas exports for revenue. It states that 93% of economic activity should be fueled by non-oil sectors and calls for 42% of Omanis to be employed by private businesses rather than the public sector.

Saudi Arabia described Qaboos as the man who modernized Oman. The United Arab Emirates and Egypt described him as a “wise leader.” The UAE, which has had tense relations with Qaboos, announced three days of mourning.

In Yemen, the Houthis, who are at war with Saudi Arabia and the UAE, described him as a leader who worked to end the country’s five-year-old conflict.

India described him as a beacon of peace, while rival Pakistan called Qaboos a beloved leader and trusted friend.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson said Qaboos was “an exceptionally wise and respected leader who will be missed enormously.”

“He leaves a profound legacy, not only in Oman but across the region too,” Johnson said in a statement.

In the United States, former President George W. Bush issued a statement saying Qaboos was “a stable force in the Middle East and a strong U.S. ally.”

“His Majesty had a vision for a modern, prosperous, and peaceful Oman, and he willed that vision into reality,” Bush said, adding that he and his wife visited him in Muscat last fall.

HOUSTON —

Severe storms sweeping across southern portions of the U.S. and up into the Midwest were blamed Saturday in the deaths of at least 11 people, including two first responders, as high winds, tornadoes and unrelenting rain battered large swaths of the country.

Storm-related fatalities were reported due to icy weather in Texas, a tornado in Alabama, and in Louisiana, where winds were so strong that a trailer home was lifted off its foundation and carried several hundred feet. A man drowned in Oklahoma, and the storms even touched the Midwest with at least one death on an icy highway in Iowa. Hundreds of thousands of people were left without power from Texas to Ohio, parts of highways were closed in Oklahoma and Arkansas due to flooding, and hundreds of flights were canceled at Chicago’s international airports.

Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson declared a state of emergency to assist crews working to restore power around the state.

Two first responders were killed and another was critically injured in Lubbock, Texas, Saturday morning after they were hit by a vehicle while working the scene of a traffic accident in icy conditions, officials said.

Police Officer Nicholas Reyna, 27, who had been with the department for one year, died at the scene. Firefighter Lt. David Hill, 39, was taken to a local hospital, where he later died. Firefighter Matthew Dawson, 30, was hospitalized in critical condition.

Lubbock Police Chief Floyd Mitchell called it an “extremely tragic day” for the city.

Another person had died in Texas on Friday night when a car flipped into a creek in Dallas as severe thunderstorms passed through. Lightning from Friday’s stormy weather was suspected of causing fires that burned two houses but caused no injuries in the suburban Dallas cities of Burleson and Mansfield.

A man drowned near Kiowa, Okla., after he was swept away in floodwaters, the Oklahoma Highway Patrol said Saturday. Randall Hyatt, 58, of Wardville, was overwhelmed by rushing water while getting out of his stalled truck.

The Iowa State Patrol said roads were caked with ice early Saturday when a semitrailer on Interstate 80 overturned, killing a passenger in the truck east of Iowa City.

In Alabama, three people were confirmed killed near Carrollton in Pickens County, the National Weather Service in Birmingham said on Twitter. The Alabama Emergency Management Agency said the deaths were caused by an “embedded tornado within a long line of intense thunderstorms.”

Earlier Saturday, in northwestern Louisiana, firefighters found the bodies of an elderly couple near their demolished trailer in Benton, the Bossier Parish Sheriff’s Office said via Facebook. The winds were so strong the home of the couple, who were the in-laws of a parish deputy, was moved 200 feet from its foundation.

The National Weather Service in Shreveport said a tornado with winds of around 135 mph had touched down in Bossier Parish. Drone footage showed smashed buildings, a large vehicle flipped on its side, toppled trees and debris scattered over a large area.

Also in Louisiana, Raymond Holden, 75, was killed in his bed when a tree fell on his home in Oil City, crushing him, according to the Caddo Parish Coroner’s Office.

About 91,000 customers were without power in Alabama on Saturday evening, according to Alabama Power. PowerOutage.us said Georgia had about 105,000 power outages Saturday evening, with tens of thousands of outages also reported in Mississippi and Louisiana. Outages were reported from Texas to Michigan.

In Tennessee, Memphis Light, Gas and Water said about 23,000 customers were without power Saturday morning. Damage was widespread throughout Shelby County, Tennessee’s most populous county — which includes Memphis — including downed trees and power poles, some of which will need to be replaced, according to the utility.

The Oklahoma Department of Transportation reported Saturday morning that portions of several highways in the southeastern part of the state were closed due to flooding. The Arkansas Department of Transportation reported that portions of several state highways across the state, particularly in the southeastern portion of Arkansas, were closed because of downed trees and power lines and flooding.

On Alabama’s Gulf Coast, the National Weather Service warned of high winds and flooding and the potential for 10-foot-high waves on beaches, where northern visitors escaping the cold are a common sight during the winter.

Many streams were already at or near flood levels because of earlier storms, and heavy rains could lead to flash flooding across the region, forecasters said. Parts of Arkansas, Tennessee, Mississippi, Missouri, Illinois and Indiana were under flash-flood warnings or watches on Saturday.

The storm, bringing the threat of ice and snow to the Chicago area, prompted the cancellation of more than 1,200 flights Saturday at Chicago’s two main airports. Most occurred at O’Hare International, according to the Chicago Department of Aviation’s online flight-tracking website.

The weather service issued a winter weather advisory, flood watch and lake-shore flood warning for the Chicago metropolitan area for Saturday and a winter storm warning for adjacent areas of northwestern Illinois.

The former Tottenham midfielder would like to see the talented playmaker make a move to north London in January after several months of transfer talk

Hakim Ziyech could be “the perfect player” for Tottenham, says Rafael van der Vaart, with the former Spurs star urging Jose Mourinho to launch a January raid on Ajax.

A move to England for the Morocco international has been mooted for some time.

Various landing spots have been suggested, with Ziyech having seen his stock rise on the back of impressive showings in the Eredivisie and Champions League.

He starred for Ajax last season as they enjoyed a memorable European adventure, recording 21 goals in all competitions.

Another eight efforts have been added to his tally this season, with six of those coming alongside 12 assists in 17 outings in the Dutch top-flight.

With Ziyech’s pedigree now without question, Van der Vaart wants to see his former employers in north London make a move to bring added creativity into their ranks.

The ex-Netherlands international said on Instagram: “I’ve said it already many times, I hope, I really hope that Tottenham can buy Hakim Ziyech from Ajax.

“He is a player that the squad need, they need creativity at the moment.

“He can score goals, he can give assists and I think for him it’s really important to make the next step.

“I think he would be the perfect player [for Tottenham].”

Spurs are in the market for more attacking flair after seeing injury rule Harry Kane out until April.

Mourinho’s side will be without their talismanic figure when they play host to Premier League leaders Liverpool on Saturday.

That contest promises to provide another stern test of Tottenham’s top-four credentials, with Van der Vaart looking for them to put down a marker against unbeaten domestic rivals.

He added: “It’ a really difficult game because Liverpool is the best team in the league and the world.

“Spurs are much better than they think. They need to play their own game.

“It’s time to show that and I believe in Mourinho and the players. Spurs will win 2-1.”

Tottenham are still searching for consistency under their new boss, with a leaky defence leaving them with work to do in an ongoing bid to secure Champions League qualification for 2020-21.
