February 22, 2020 | News | No Comments

CBS Late Show host Stephen Colbert mocked Joe Biden’s new campaign slogan “Make America Moral Again,” suggesting it is inferior to President Donald Trump’s iconic campaign catchphrase “Make America Great Again.”

“Biden has a full head of steam right away, he was already the frontrunner before he declared,” Stephen Colbert began. “Looks like Democrats are ‘Feeling the Bern’ so much as they are ‘jonesing for Joe.’”

Colbert then shared a clip of Biden’s Monday appearance on Good Morning America, where he was asked about whether he had a campaign slogan to counter Donald Trump’s “Make America Great Again.”

“Make America Moral Again … Make America return to the essence of who we are, the dignity of the country, the dignity of people and treating our people with dignity,” Biden responded.

“Move over, MAGA,” Colbert quipped. “Little awkward to say, I admit, but it’s going to look fantastic on his hat.”

According to RealClearPolitics polling averages, Biden remains the strong favorite to clinch the Democratic nomination, with an average of 32.8 percent across recent polls. His closest competitors are currently Sen. Bernie Sanders of Vermont with a 19.4 percent average, and Elizabeth Warren of Massachusetts, who is lagging behind on just 8.4 percent.

“We are reminded again. We are in a battle. We are in a battle for America’s soul, I really believe that, and I want to restore it,” Biden said during a rally this weekend.  “Donald Trump is the only president who’s decided not to represent the whole country. The president has his base; we need a president who works for all Americans — we can afford this.”

Milan mayor: Italy to appeal EMA relocation

Milan mayor: Italy to appeal EMA relocation

The ECJ says it has not yet received any such appeal.

Giuseppe Sala, the mayor of Milan, said that Italy would lodge an appeal Tuesday against the decision to relocate the European Medicines Agency to Amsterdam, which doesn’t have an appropriate temporary building ready to house it.

Speaking on Italian radio RTL, Sala said he spoke to Prime Minister Paolo Gentiloni and told him this was the moment to be aggressive.

“This situation risks becoming a bit ridiculous: first they invent this [procedure of drawing] lots, and then the Dutch start saying they are not ready, then they are giving a venue that is only half [of the current space of the agency],” Sala said. “It’s not a good moment for Europe,” he said.

The Italian government’s move was sparked by the EMA Executive Director Guido Rasi saying on Monday that the temporary building to host the agency in Amsterdam until the permanent one is ready is not optimal.

Sala acknowledged that the chances of overturning the decision to send the EMA to Amsterdam were “not very high, but we need to try it.” The appeal, which Italian media expect to be sent to the European Court of Justice, is both a technical and a political issue, Sala said.

The ECJ said it had not received any such appeal by 2 p.m.

Stephen King: 'It is Time for Susan Collins to Go'

February 22, 2020 | News | No Comments

Author Stephen King endorsed Maine’s Democratic House Speaker Sara Gideon in her campaign to unseat Sen. Susan Collins (R-MA) in next year’s election, declaring that it is “time” for Collins to leave office.

“It is time for Susan Collins to go,” King said on Tuesday, in response to the news that Sara Gidgeon had announced her intention to run.

The 71-year-old author who is a native of the Pine Tree State, has long been active in campaigns to remove their Republican representatives from office having previously endorsed Collins’s 2014 challenger, state Sen. Shenna Bellows (D).

The “Pet Cemetery” scribe was also a vocal critic of former Republican Governor Paul LePage, calling him “a bigot, a homophobe, and a racist” and a “terrible embarrassment to the state I live in and love.”

King’s dislike for Collins, who sits on the more liberal wing of the Republican Party, was cemented last September after she voted in favor of Brett Kavanaugh’s nomination to the Supreme Court. At the time, King suggested voting in favor of Kavanaugh would make Collons’ defeat in 2020 an inevitability.

“IF Susan Collins votes to confirm Kavanaugh, and IF she runs for re-election—two bigs ifs—she will be defeated,” he wrote. “It would be unwise for anyone to mistake how angry most Americans are at the way this is being railroaded through.

Gideon, who announced her bid on Monday, now remains the frontrunner for the Democratic nomination for next year’s Senate election.

“Susan Collins has been in the Senate for 22 years. And at one point maybe she was different than some of the folks in Washington, but she doesn’t seem that way anymore,” Gideon said in her launch video. “[Her] vote to put Brett Kavanaugh on the Supreme Court may be paying off for her, but it’s put women’s control of their own health care decisions in extreme jeopardy.”

King, meanwhile, also remains a staunch critic of President Donald Trump. Last December, he described Trump as “rotten to the core” and called on lawmakers to remove him from office.

“Tell your legislators and friends who are Trump supporters that it’s time to put partisanship aside,” the author said at the time. “Trump is a train wreck, and the train he’s pulling is our country. He has to be removed from office.”

Ferrari boss Mattia Binotto says the Scuderia would not be able to exploit a DAS concept of its own, should it choose to do so, until the middle of the 2020 season.

Mercedes acknowledged its novel ‘dual axis steering’ system on Thursday and the system has led to a lot of head scratching by the German outfit’s rivals.

While team engineers have barely started to understand the DAS and how it could be exploited, Binotto dismissed an early adoption of the device by the Scuderia.

FIA says Mercedes DAS system is banned for 2021 season!

Furthermore, the Swiss engineer would also like some clarification from the fIA which has given the green light to DAS for 2020 only.

“I’ve seen that there is a lot of discussion about it,” said Binotto. “Personally myself, I didn’t really look in detail, what it’s about, but I think we trust fully the FIA.

“I’m pretty sure that they have already done the right decision, or they will do it. But I completely trust on what FIA will judge.

“We will do [talk with the FIA] for clarification, important for us to understand, but as I said, we will not challenge the FIA on their decision, because we trust them fully on what will be or has been the decision on that.”

Binotto highlighted the fact that if Maranello decided the DAS was worth an engineering effort, there would be no fast-tracking the development of such a system.

“It’s an entire first concept design: design, producing, homologation,” Binotto explained. “It has to be safe. So if it is, I think it can be like mid-season, not earlier.

“I think we need to first understand how it works and understand what could be the area of performance benefit.

“I don’t think at the moment we’ve got any ideas. But we will look into it, no doubt, and [whether] it is worthwhile developing or not.”

Binotto also downplayed the potential for DAS to represent a “game changer” for Mercedes this season.

“Certainly, the Mercedes has great car, and it has shown to be fast,” he said.

“There are a lot of innovations on cars, and I think that a few of the solutions, which are on the Mercedes have been copied from the Ferrari and vice versa.

“So I think at the end, the one you’ve just mentioned is certainly visible. As a game changer, I don’t think so. I think it’s part of the entire package and as such I think it’s a good package they’ve got.”

Actor Jim Carrey went into full meltdown mode with a recent social media post, claiming that the Trump presidency is a planet threatening, Nazi meteor-sized “extinction level event.”

“Innocent people are now being slaughtered, families ruined and childrens’ lives destroyed. All in his name. If the Craven Republican Senate allows this vile miscreant to continue encouraging devisiveness, the ‘Trump Presidency’ will become an EXTINCTION LEVEL EVENT,” Jim Carrey roared.

Along with this warning, he posted a drawing of President Trump depicted as a meteor hurtling toward Earth. Trump seems to have a swastika on his face as well.

This post comes in the wake of an attack on Muslims in Christchurch, New Zealand that killed 50 people. Many celebrities used the shooting to blame Trump, with actor Jeffrey Wright even comparing the president to Osama Bin Laden.

Hollywood director Rob Reiner also name-checked Trump, saying, “What happened in New Zealand is horrifying. The rise of white supremacy & white nationalism is frightening. World leaders play a role in stoking this hatred.”

“If you are not condemning white supremacy you are condoning it. If POTUS doesn’t condemn, he condones.”

Carrey uses his social media page to routinely post drawings that demean Trump and his supporters. In December, he called Trump supporters “loyal zombies” for supporting a border wall.

The Ace Ventura actor has previously warned Americans that the president is pushing America towards “suffering beyond all imagination.”

Last year, Carrey gave a public talk where he further attacked Republicans, comparing them to rapists.

“These are not people you can deal with. You cannot be bipartisan with a criminal. A rapist needs to be removed, not negotiated with. These people are raping our system, they’re destroying it right in front of us,” the 57-year-old said.

He also compared Trump to cancer, saying, “Trump is a melanoma, and anybody that covers for him, including Sarah Sanders, is putting makeup on it. It shows that there’s a deeper problem in this country, and that problem is greed.”

Croatia’s charmer-in-chief seeks to woo Brussels

February 22, 2020 | News | No Comments

Croatian Prime Minister Andrej Plenković was on a charm offensive in Brussels this week, declaring that the EU’s newest member wants to be part of its inner circle. But he has his work cut out to persuade other European leaders that it belongs there.

Plenković was making all the right noises, praising French President Emmanuel Macron and German Chancellor Angela Merkel, and saying his country wanted to join the passport-free Schengen zone in 2020 and hoped to adopt the euro further down the line.

“I want Croatia to be stable, to promote European values,” Plenković told POLITICO in an interview. “I want to anchor Croatia in the inner circle and to position ourselves as a reasonable, credible pro-European government.”

Casting a shadow over those aspirations is the failure of Croatia and fellow EU member Slovenia to resolve a long-running border dispute. While the European Commission has called on both sides to find a solution, the pressure is mainly on Zagreb, which has refused to accept the findings of an international arbitration panel set up to settle the dispute.

That spat reared its head when Plenković, a 47-year-old former member of the European Parliament, paid a visit to Strasbourg earlier this month. He may have impressed his former colleagues by giving a speech in five different languages but he was also taken to task by Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who said no more countries would be admitted to the EU before they had resolved such disputes.

That condition is written into the EU’s new Western Balkans strategy, which sets out a pathway for several of Croatia’s neighbors to join the EU.

On his trip to Brussels, Plenković suggested Croatia could play a valuable role in guiding those countries toward EU membership, drawing on its own recent experience. Like almost all of those would-be members, Croatia emerged as an independent state when Yugoslavia was torn apart by a series of wars in the 1990s.

“Croatia has still fresh knowledge and the know-how of the whole accession process. We share with our neighbors what we have passed through in terms of reforms, technical expertise, legislative harmonization, institution building,” he said.

While that offer is welcome to the Commission, which has put the Western Balkans back in the EU’s focus, one EU official said he expected Plenković to “lead by example” — meaning Croatia should make the first step to settle various disputes with its neighbors.

Border trouble

Not only does Croatia have an outstanding dispute with Slovenia, it also disagrees with Serbia over their border. Plenković acknowledged Zagreb still has issues to resolve, decades after its war with Belgrade came to an end.

“There are still residual issues from the ’90s, such as the missing persons, such as border issues, the return of cultural goods, war reparations,” Plenković said. “There are many issues which still need to be addressed and which unfortunately were not sufficiently remedied in the last two decades.”

On his Brussels trip, Plenković played down the importance of the Slovenia dispute and suggested the EU should back off and let the two countries find a solution. (That’s not a view shared by Slovenia, which insists Croatia should accept the arbitration ruling.)

“I think that if there is advice to be offered, we would be pleased to hear it, but our position is that we’ve tried to address this issue between the two countries concerned, especially given the fact that Croatia and Slovenia throughout history had never had any conflict,” he said. “This issue should not be overblown.”

Instead, Plenković talked up his reforms of the country’s economy, administration and judicial system, and gave unwavering support to the “lead candidate” process for selecting Juncker’s successor as Commission president — often referred to by the German name Spitzenkandidat and opposed by Macron and several other EU leaders.

“The Spitzenkandidat was a very good novelty in European elections,” he said, citing his experience in the 2014 European Parliament election, when he stood as an MEP for the European People’s Party. “I was number one on the list of my party back in 2014, and Jean-Claude Juncker was my Spitzenkandidat, so in a way we worked for each other.”

Plenković said joining the Schengen zone could be achievable by the time Croatia holds the rotating presidency of the Council of the EU in the first half of 2020 — and his experience of coping with migrants could help in that quest.

“In the aftermath of the migratory crisis, we’ve understood the importance of protecting the EU’s external borders as well as our own borders,” he said, again seeking to bolster his credentials with the EU’s inner circle by declaring that Croatia “didn’t opt, like some of our neighbors, for wire fences or physical barriers.”

Joining the euro “is a little bit further down the road. I would say in my modest estimation closer to the end of the mandate of the next Croatian government, so during the 2020—2024 term,” he said.

The EU is about to take decisions on its next long-term budget and faces calls for wholesale reforms, as championed by Macron. Those changes could leave some countries on the outside as a core of members pushes ahead with closer integration.

Plenković used his time in Brussels to tell fellow leaders which camp he’d prefer to be in. Asked if it was his ambition to stay on long enough to lead his country into both Schengen and the eurozone, Plenković said “that is clearly an agenda that I have.”

Nolte: Jussie Smollett Is Booted from 'Empire'

February 22, 2020 | News | No Comments

Fox TV announced late Tuesday that Jussie Smollett will not be returning for Empire’s sixth season.

Fox did keep its options open by renewing the extension on his contract, but this is very bad news for America’s Gay Tupac.

“By mutual agreement, the studio has negotiated an extension to Jussie Smollett’s option for season six, but at this time there are no plans for the character of Jamal to return to Empire,” the Fox statement read.

A Smollett representative also released a statement: “We’ve been told that Jussie will not be on ‘Empire’ in the beginning of the season but he appreciates they have extended his contract to keep Jamal’s future open,” the statement said. “Most importantly he is grateful to Fox and ‘Empire’ leadership, cast, crew and fans for their unwavering support.”

One wonders if he is getting paid for episodes he will not appear in.

Although Kim Foxx, Cook County’s corrupt city attorney with deep ties to Barack Obama’s shady Chicagoland, dropped all 16 felony counts against Smollett, the scandal is far from over for the 36-year-old who orchestrated a hate crime hoax earlier this year.

Back in January, Smollett claimed he had been attacked by two masked, white Donald Trump supporters in subzero weather at around 2 a.m. Smollett, who is black and gay, told police the two men hurled racial and homophobic slurs, assaulted him, poured white bleach on his black skin, wrapped a noose around his neck, and shouted “This is MAGA country!”

Somehow, these two white guys, who were fully prepared with bleach and a noose, knew that Smollett would make a fast food run in the middle of the night, or they are the kind of dedicated racists willing to sit outside all night in below zero weather on the off-off-off chance their prey will get a craving for a sandwich and discover he doesn’t have the fixings at home.

Unfortunately for Smollett, the Chicago police were determined to find the perpetrators, and did in the person of Abe and Ola Osundairo, two brothers who are black, and…

Who have credibly claimed they are, in fact, not two dedicated racists willing to sit outside in below zero weather hoping their intended target gets a hankerin’ for a cold cut combo. Rather, the two brothers say Smollett paid them $3500 to stage the hate crime.

To back up this claim, police found the canceled $3500 check, established a previous relationship between the brothers and Smollett, and even found video of Abe and Ola Osundairo purchasing red hats that they say were intended to stand in for the Make America Great Again hats worn by Trump supporters.

Interestingly enough, Smollett and his attorneys now claim Abe and Ola Osundairo are responsible for the hate crime but have yet to explain why Smollett fingered them as white guys.

The Empire star might have been able to use his celebrity and political privilege to extricate himself from a criminal justice jackpot, but he is a long way from putting PR nightmare in the rear view.

The city of Chicago is suing Gay Tupac for the cost of the investigation ($130,000), the Osundairos are suing Smollett’s attorneys for continuing to accuse them of committing a hate crime, and the court of public opinion has returned a guilty verdict.

This has resulted in a massive ratings crash for Empire, which used to be one of the hottest shows on television. While it’s true the show had cooled prior to the scandal, there is no question Smollett’s hoax took a toll on audience goodwill.

For example: in a world where Smollett did not orchestrate a hate crime, the episode where his character gets gay-married would have seen a ratings boost. In the real world, the ratings took a nosedive.

There is just no question Smollett is not only a national pariah and punch-line, but that the public see him as a legitimately bad guy, a shameless liar willing to put our country through hell for his own mercenary purposes.

Anyway, my guess is that the only way we see Gay Tupac on Empire again (or anything) is if his return can be spun as a triumphant one after some miracle happens that proves he truly was the victim of a hate crime by a couple of black/white guys.
