Jennifer Lopez dévoile son dressing de rêve

February 18, 2020 | News | No Comments

Cokie Roberts, an awarding-winning journalist who was a media fixture for decades on ABC and National Public Radio (NPR), has died from complications from breast cancer. She was 75.

Roberts had recently addressed her health problems, according to ABC’s report on her death.

“Over the summer, I have had some health issues which required treatment that caused weight loss. I am doing fine,” she said in a statement after an appearance on This Week. “I very much appreciate the kind comments I have received and expect to be, as I have been, working away in the days and months to come, covering what promises to be a fascinating election. I am grateful to everyone who has been in touch and sent their well wishes. Thanks for caring.”

Roberts was diagnosed and successfully treated for breast cancer in 2002, according to ABC.

“We will miss Cokie beyond measure, both for her contributions and for her love and kindness,” her family said in a statement.

“Cokie Roberts will be dearly missed,” James Goldston, president of ABC News, said. “Cokie’s kindness, generosity, sharp intellect and thoughtful take on the big issues of the day made ABC a better place and all of us better journalists.”

“Roberts co-anchored ABC’s ‘This Week’ with Sam Donaldson from 1996 to 2002,” ABC reported. “She also served as political commentator, chief congressional analyst, and a commentator for ‘This Week’ during her three decades at ABC.”

She was inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame and was named a “living legend” by the Library of Congress in 2008.

The following is the full statement from her family:

The October 21st benefit concert will feature more than a dozen artists at Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.

Alicia Keys, Farruko, Becky G, G-Eazy, Ty Dolla $ign, Carnage, CNCO, Moneybagg Yo, Doja Cat, Gashi, Dermot Kennedy, Lucky Daye, Angelica Vila, and Nicole Bus will feature among the musicians tapped to raise money for Rock the Vote, self-described as a “nonpartisan nonprofit dedicated to building the political power of young people.”

Tickets to the show went on sale at 4 PM EST yesterday. TIDAL says “all net proceeds will support voter registration, education, and rights.” But despite its nonpartisan message, it may not be. Keys is an outspoken Trump detractor, characterizing his immigration reforms as “zero-humanity policy.”

TIDAL itself has been on the proverbial rocks for a while. After Sprint purchased a third of rapper Jay-Z’s music streaming platform for $200 million last year, they were accused of inflating their number of users. In particular, TIDAL claimed a Kanye West album was streamed 250 million times in the first 10 days on the service — when it only had 3 million users.

European Commission chief spokesperson Margaritis Schinas has been nominated by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis as the country’s next commissioner, the prime minister’s office wrote in a statement Thursday.

Schinas, who has served as chief spokesperson since 2014, has been a fixture of the Brussels policymaking scene for nearly three decades.

He was a member of the European Parliament for Greece’s center-right New Democracy between 2007 and 2009.

Earlier in his career, Schinas was head of Cabinet to Commissioner Markos Kyprianou, as well as deputy head of Cabinet to Commission Vice President Loyola de Palacio. In the early 1990s, he was also part of the Cabinets of Spanish Commissioners Abel Matutes and Marcelino Oreja.

Actor Jim Carrey defended fired FBI Director James Comey after the Department of Justice’s inspector general’s report concluded that Comey broke bureau policy by leaking memos with classified information.

“This is the day they tried to make patriotism unethical,” Jim Carrey said in a tweet on Thursday that featured a drawing of Comey with the words “Department Policy is Not Law” written on his head.

Carrey’s tweet included a graphic hashtag declaring: “Unfcking scrupulous motherfcking scumbags who will spend eternity choking on the devils dong.”

The Department of Justice’s inspector general, the agency’s watchdog arm, released its report on Thursday which said, in part “We conclude that Comey’s retention, handling, and dissemination of certain Memos violated Department and FBI policies, and his FBI Employment Agreement.”

Breitbart News reported:

Carrey, or course, has used his Twitter account to attack President Donald Trump, his administration, family, and the president’s supporters.

In April, the Sonic the Hedgehog star published a political drawing slamming Trump and his “minions who help him while democracy dies.”

SAN DIEGO —

The Trump administration said Tuesday that it will waive federal contracting laws to speed construction of a wall at the U.S.-Mexico border.

The Department of Homeland Security said waiving procurement regulations will allow 177 miles of wall to be built more quickly in California, Arizona, New Mexico and Texas. The 10 waived laws include requirements for having open competition, justifying selections and receiving all bonding from a contractor before any work can begin.

The acting Homeland Security secretary, Chad Wolf, is exercising authority under a 2005 law that gives him sweeping powers to waive laws for building border barriers. Secretaries under President Trump have issued 16 waivers, and President George W. Bush issued five, but Tuesday’s announcement marks the first time that waivers have applied to federal procurement rules. Previously they were used to waive environmental impact reviews.

The Trump administration said it expects the waivers will allow 94 miles of wall to be built this year, bringing the Republican president closer to his pledge of about 450 miles since he took office and made it one of his top domestic priorities. It said the other 83 miles covered by the waivers may get built this year.

“Under the president’s leadership, we are building more wall, faster than ever before,” the department said in a statement.

The move is expected to spark criticism that the administration is overstepping its authority, but legal challenges have failed. In 2018, a federal judge in San Diego rejected arguments by California and environmental advocacy groups that the secretary’s broad powers should have an expiration date. An appeals court upheld the ruling last year.

Congress gave the secretary power to waive laws in areas of high illegal crossings in 2005 in a package of emergency spending for wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and minimum standards for state-issued identification cards. The Senate approved it unanimously, with support from Joe Biden, Barack Obama and Hillary Clinton. The House passed it with strong bipartisan support; then-Rep. Bernie Sanders voted against it.

The waivers, to be published in the Federal Register, apply to projects that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will award in six of nine Border Patrol sectors on the Mexican border: San Diego and El Centro in California; Yuma and Tucson in Arizona; El Paso, which spans New Mexico and west Texas, and Del Rio, Texas.

The administration said the waivers will apply to contractors that have already been vetted. In May, the Army Corps named 12 companies to compete for Pentagon-funded contracts.

The Army Corps is tasked with awarding $6.1 billion that the Department of Defense transferred for wall construction last year after Congress gave Trump only a fraction of the money. The administration has been able to spend that money during legal challenges.

LAS VEGAS —

Lisa Rosario describes herself as a political junkie. But she still hasn’t decided who she will support in the Democratic presidential contest.

“It’s gut-wrenching because this to me is one of the most important votes that we’ve had in my generation. This is a huge vote, especially for Latinos,” said Rosario, 55, who is of Puerto Rican descent. She was waiting to hear candidates at a casino fundraiser held in Las Vegas by the Clark County Democrats.

Rosario, a lifelong Republican, said she listened to misinformation and supported President Trump in 2016 but switched parties after she saw him in office. Now the Henderson, Nev., resident says beating him is crucial. “This is like women’s rights or ending slavery. It’s that important,” Rosario said.

The candidates, done with the first nominating contests in the relatively homogeneous states of Iowa and New Hampshire, are focusing on minority voters such as Rosario now that the race is moving into more diverse states. In Nevada, which has started early voting and holds caucuses Saturday, 1 in 5 voters is Latino.

“That’s why Nevada is so important” in the nominating contest, Gov. Steve Sisolak said before candidates spoke at the Las Vegas fundraiser. “We’ve got the most diverse group here. … This is the United States of America that you’re seeing represented in this room tonight. That’s our electorate, that’s our voters. That’s who these candidates have to appeal to, across all demographics, across all other issues. They have to appeal to everyone.”

Cecia Alvarado, executive director of the nonpartisan organization Mi Familia Vota in Nevada, said she has seen campaigns more active in courting Latino voters than in previous elections.

“We are seeing a bigger effort from the candidates because they know that Latinos are looking for them to talk about the issues that they care about,” Alvarado said. “The Latinx voter is a high-maintenance voter. It’s no longer just enough to run an ad in Spanish.”

Most campaigns have made a point of hiring bilingual Latino staff, including in leadership positions. They send mailers in multiple languages and multilingual volunteers reach out to voters by phone and in person.

Advertising is of course ubiquitous, with candidates spending a total of $15.2 million to date in Nevada. Many of the candidates are also pitching their candidacies on Spanish-language television.

On Sunday night, viewers watching Telemundo may have caught an ad for Minnesota Sen. Amy Klobuchar featuring a Spanish-speaking narrator who spoke about her fight for better healthcare, prescription drug prices and education. “Amy knows what’s important: our well-being,” the narrator says.

Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders’ ad, which also features a Spanish-speaking narrator, is more personal, reminding viewers that his father immigrated to the U.S. seeking a better life and didn’t speak English. “Bernie never forgot the immigrant roots of his family, and that’s why he has always fought for us,” the narrator says.

Massachusetts Sen. Elizabeth Warren’s Spanish-language ad strikes a personal tone, saying that she fights hard because she comes from a family that struggled, a theme she visits in her talks to voters as well.

Billionaire activist Tom Steyer, who is responsible for more than two-thirds of the candidates’ ad spending in the state, is on television so frequently that Cindy Gonzalez can recite his ads by memory.

But the 27-year-old engineer from Henderson plans to caucus for Warren, who Gonzalez wishes was on television more frequently.

“She has a plan for healthcare, and it’s great, but people just don’t know about it,” Gonzalez said after hearing Warren speak at an early voting event in a Las Vegas high school auditorium.

Her coworker, Dylan Jaramillo, who also plans to vote for Warren, agreed. “I believe she is the candidate to beat President Trump,” he said, but added that he’s seen no Spanish-language advertising from her campaign. “She’s done a pretty poor job at targeting, especially the Hispanic community.”

Former South Bend, Ind. Mayor Pete Buttigieg is the only one with an ad that features the candidate speaking Spanish. In it, he says he aims to unify the country and attacks Trump for his “brand of chaos and corruption.”

Buttigieg is the sole remaining candidate in the race who speaks Spanish, and he regularly sprinkles his stump speech with it as he campaigns in Nevada.

As he spoke about reforming the immigration system at a rally in a high school gym, Buttigieg switched from English to Spanish and said, “Y a los soñadores que están aquí, les apoyamos y sabemos que este país es tu país también.” That translates to: “And to the Dreamers who are here, we support you, and we know that this country is your country, too.”

The line struck Las Vegas resident Marci Pichardo as odd. Pichardo, a Latina and Sanders supporter, attended the event to hear Buttigieg speak because she was considering caucusing for him. But his one Spanish phrase sounded scripted and selective, she said.

“It just sounds weird to hear a politician try to force it because they don’t really speak the language,” Pichardo said, adding that she ultimately decided not to caucus for Buttigieg because he didn’t sound genuine. “I get they’re trying to get voters, but it just sounds kind of fake.”

During the question-and-answer portion of the event, Buttigieg was asked a written question in Spanish about the immigrant experience for Latinos. His response came out in broken Spanish as he appeared to grasp for words. It prompted brief clapping from the mostly white crowd and a short “si se puede” chant before he translated his response into English.

The candidates have also been courting voters through Spanish-language media. But such efforts can be perilous, as Klobuchar and Steyer learned last week. Asked on Telemundo to name Mexico’s president, both failed. Buttigieg was able to identify Andrés Manuel López Obrador.

Candidates also lean heavily on surrogates to make their case. Julián Castro, the Texan and former Obama Cabinet member who recently dropped out of the presidential race, will stump for Warren this week. Steyer had the son of one of the members of Los Tigres del Norte speaking out for him. Sanders had Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a rock star among liberals, campaign for him here late last year.

Former Vice President Joe Biden tapped Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti, who is of Mexican, Italian and Jewish heritage, to speak on his behalf at an organizing event in Las Vegas featuring Latino leaders, where the campaign handed out “Estoy con Joe” stickers.

“En español, decimos, dime con quién andas y te diré quién eres,” Garcetti told scores of volunteers and supporters. “It’s a dicho — saying — that says, ‘Tell me who you walk with and I will tell you who you are.’”

Biden’s campaign has been strategic about seeking endorsements from prominent Latino leaders, such as Nevada state Sen. Yvanna Cancela, who is a familiar face at many of his events.

Campaigns have also held social events intended to foster bonds and familiarity in the community.

Sanders’ campaign recently hosted a house party with supporters over tamales and put together a soccer game Monday night with voters. Steyer’s organization allowed community members to stage a Christmas play at one of its offices.

No one has at much at stake as Sanders, a front-runner here who invested in Latino outreach efforts early and aggressively, and who is counting on Latino support as critical to his path to the nomination. He’s taking a similar approach in California, where he rallied thousands in the Bay Area on Monday. Polling shows he is popular with Latinos, particularly young people.

Jessica Ramos, a state senator from New York, implored Sanders’ supporters to make sure they turn out during a weekend rally in East Las Vegas.

“Nevada, we need you to caucus, we need you to vote for Bernie, we need you to bring your abuela, we need you to bring your tio, we need you to bring your best friend, we need you to bring your neighbor,” she told more than 1,000 people gathered at a high school in the heavily Latino part of the city. “Make sure we do everything we can. Leave no door unknocked, leave no stone unturned until we have Bernie Sanders as our president.”

Sanders then led a march to a nearby early voting site. Several hundred followed him for the 15-minute walk, holding signs about immigration and criminal justice reform and chanting, “Se vive, se siente, Bernie presidente!” which means “We live it, we feel it, Bernie president!”

For Las Vegas resident Sierra Brooks, it was her first time voting.

“I like how he’s going to give everybody an opportunity to have healthcare and he’s going to give everybody an opportunity to go to school,” said the 19-year-old call-center worker, who is of Mexican and African American descent. “I’m excited.”

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla.  —

Denny Hamlin’s second straight win in the Daytona 500 was an even greater accomplishment than it looked. He did it seemingly by himself.

NASCAR has evolved into a sport in which teammates help each other and even other cars from the same manufacturer come to the aid of a driver by pushing his car forward. Who is behind you is just as important as who is in front of you.

As the race was coming to an end, Hamlin was the only Toyota followed by a bunch of Fords.

“We’re defying odds,” Hamlin said. “We were obviously low on numbers there. There were just so many Fords, I knew that at the end of these races, people want to win for themselves. Alliances and all sound really, really good at the beginning, but in the end, it’s the Daytona 500 and we want to do everything we can to win. … We just ended up on the right side of it.”

The Toyotas used a strategy that at first seemed strange but then showed how it was going to work. NASCAR races are run in stages — Daytona was 65, 65 and 70 laps — with points being awarded after every stage. In the first stage, the Toyotas all ran at the back of the pack, showing no sign of wanting to engage. But a few well-timed pit stops put them in perfect position to go to the front at the start of the second stage.

“We had a great strategy there at the end of Stage 1 to put us up front at the beginning into Stage 2,” Hamlin said. “And I was able to kind of maintain good track position at that point and obviously got shuffled [near the end]. But it worked out.”

Hamlin led 79 of the 209 laps. Brad Keselowski was in front for 30, pole-sitter Ricky Stenhouse Jr. for 24 and Chase Elliott for 23.

“It’s harder to win today than ever because all the cars are so close together and with the attrition, the wrecks,” Hamlin said. “It’s harder to win now than ever. To win [Daytona] again, I don’t know. You’re going to have to check in with me next week in Las Vegas.”

The third stop on the circuit is at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana.

Another ‘L’ for Busch

Kyle Busch may be the reigning Series champion but he still hasn’t won the Daytona 500. Monday was his 15th try. He was leading when he developed engine problems with 17 laps to go before what was supposed to be the finish.

His teammate Hamlin winning was little consolation.

“I really hate it for my guys and I really hate it for Joe Gibbs Racing,” Busch said. “We’ll just keep figuring out ways to lose.”

Busch finished 34th. Dale Earnhardt, seven-time Series champion, didn’t win Daytona until his 20th try.

Johnson’s last Daytona 500

Jimmie Johnson, running his last Daytona 500 before retiring, flirted near the front but got collected in a wreck that involved 19 cars on Lap 185. He finished 35th.

“It’s been really a cool race to be a part of,” Johnson said. “I’m really excited about the races ahead of us. [Crew chief] Cliff Daniels did a great job leading this team, full support from Hendrick Motorsports, my family, my friends, my fans. I’m just very thankful for all of that. We didn’t get to Victory Lane today but I’m ready to get to Vegas and get to work out there.”

Watching the ball float through the air, Japreece Dean confidently leaned backward, the redshirt senior’s arms straight down by her sides. When her three-pointer splashed through the net, Dean threw her head back in celebration.

After her would-be game-winning shot trickled off the rim at the end of regulation, the point guard’s three-pointer with 10 seconds left in No. 8 UCLA’s 83-74 overtime win against No. 15 Oregon State at Pauley Pavilion capped a memorable Monday night for Dean. Not only did she lead the Bruins back from a 14-point deficit, but she also became the 36th player to reach 1,000 points in their UCLA career, finishing with 22 points, a career-high 12 assists to just two turnovers, and four steals.

“End of February, point guards and guard play is everything,” UCLA coach Cori Close said. “When you have your point guard playing at that kind of level, you have a lot of fun basketball left to play.”

The Bruins (22-3, 11-3 Pac-12) were inches away from winning in regulation, but Dean’s floater at the buzzer bounced off the back of the rim and trickled out. Distraught, the former Texas Tech guard fell to the floor. She covered her face.

During the huddle before overtime, freshman Camryn Brown gave Dean an encouraging tap on the arm. Dean responded with a determined nod. She came back in overtime by either scoring or assisting every UCLA field goal.

“Credit to my teammates and coaches, just encouraging me,” Dean said.

Charisma Osborne broke out of a recent shooting slump with a career-high 22 points and eight rebounds. The freshman shot 18.4% from three-point range during the previous seven games but made four of 10 Monday, including one to put the Bruins up by eight with 3:30 to go in overtime.

Osborne’s shot was part of seven unanswered UCLA points and came off a steal from Michaela Onyenwere, who had a career high-tying five steals with 16 points and 11 rebounds. UCLA shot just 39% from the field to Oregon State’s 50%, but scored 23 points off 24 turnovers committed by the Beavers.

Oregon State (19-7, 7-7 Pac-12) started the second half by making five of six shots to turn a five-point halftime lead into a 14-point cushion with 7:19 to go in the third quarter.

Then the struggling Bruins suddenly found their offense. They made eight of their next 10 shots en route to 27 third-quarter points. They scored just 26 points in the first half.

UCLA came out of a rigorous six-game stretch that included five ranked opponents with four victories. The Bruins nabbed wins at No. 21 Arizona State, No. 4 Stanford and Cal before Monday’s comeback. The losses were double-digit defeats at No. 11 Arizona and against No. 3 Oregon.

Three weeks ago, Close said the gantlet would teach her team much-needed lessons.

“The games in which we really rose up, it was out of toughness and togetherness,” Close said. “The ones that we didn’t, we let wrong things distract us. … I just learned that right here at the end of this game, when they put their mind to something, when they control their responses, they are very tough to beat.”

Horse racing newsletter: It’s all in the numbers

February 18, 2020 | News | No Comments

Hello, my name is John Cherwa, and welcome back to our horse racing newsletter as we need to wait until Friday before Santa Anita races again.

We’ve often said that statistics can be used to prove whatever point you are trying to make. For example, Santa Anita likes to use one about the number of horses that have been on the track, racing and training, to prove that the horse fatality rate is much lower than what people think. It’s in the tens of thousands of horses for this meeting.

Newsletter

Off to the races

Get the latest news, analysis, results and charts with John Cherwa's definitive Horse Racing newsletter.

You may occasionally receive promotional content from the Los Angeles Times.

While it is true horses have been on the track, as they are several days a week, if only for a jog, it’s a made-up figure. The track just extrapolates the number of horses it has and comes up with an average. It would be shredded by an auditor. When you’re going to give a number is the thousands or even millions of a percent, you better be 100% correct. It’s why I don’t use that figure.

The California Horse Racing Board issued a report in which they listed horse fatalities by trainer. In it, they broke it down by starts per 1,000. Simply, that figure is not fair. The sample size is way too small. It brought howls from some who like to use the above-mentioned figure. I thought the CHRB was going to reissue the report without that category but if they have, I haven’t seen it. Either way, I won’t use that figure either.

So, on the backdrop of stats don’t always tell the right picture, I thought I would compare Presidents Day figures from the last five years and 10 and 20 years back to see if we can learn something. It’s broken down in categories.

Attendance

Feb. 21, 2000: 20,450

Feb. 15, 2010: 13,306

Feb. 15, 2016: 10,225

Feb. 20, 2017: 9,412

Feb. 19, 2018: 9,577

Feb. 18, 2019: 7,668

Feb. 17, 2020: 7,003

Comment: The crazy thing about the 2000 day was it was raining. As you can see, the decline was massive.

Handle

2000: $3,070,332 on track; $150 average per customer; $10,569,081 including ITW and out of state.

2010: $2,050,849; $154; $8,873,143

2016: $1,596,438; $156; $9,280,161

2017: $1,433,468, $152; $10,093,977

2018: $1,354,851, $141; $9,298,033

2019: $1,282,639; $167; $9,467,602

2020: $1,000,777; $143; $6,213,445

Comment: While attendance is way down, the mutuel handle in no way mirrors that. This no doubt is because of the strength of ADWs. And, the consistency of average per customer, is to me, further evidence that the attendance figures are, shall we say, a moving target. (Yes, Santa Anita denies that.) Now the number of races (we’ll get to that in a moment) also mitigates the number.

Races and runners

2000: 10 races, 63 runners, 6.3 average per race

2010: 10, 80, 8.0

2016: 9, 69, 7.7

2017: 11, 84, 7.6

2018: 9, 67, 7.4

2019: 9, 76, 8.4

2020: 8, 48, 6.0

Comment: This year, everyone hopes, is clearly an aberration. But, if not, it shows the severity of the decline in the horse population. In the past, the numbers go up and down a little but Monday’s total is alarming.

More numbers

This is stolen from Ed Golden’s stable notes. It did not include Monday’s racing.

“Through 26 days, favorites are winning well above the national norm of about 33%, at 39.09 (86 out of 22), even higher on dirt, 41.80 (51 of 122) and slightly lower on turf, 35.71% (35 of 98). Bridge jumpers are faring well with in-the-money odds-on favorites winning at an 87.50% clip (49 of 56) .

Santa Anita review

The feature on Monday’s card was the $70,000 Wishing well Stakes for fillies and mares going 5 ½ furlongs on the turf. It was only a five-horse field but An Eddie Surprise rallied from next-to-last to win by a half-length. It was jockey Joel Rosario’s fourth win of the day.

An Eddie Surprise paid $9.40, $4.60 and $2.60. Miss Hot Legs was second and Kentan Road was third.

Here’s what the winning connections had to say.

Doug O’Neill (winning trainer): “We love her consistency. Prior to the race it looked like such an evenly matched race so you could win or run fifth and run your race. We just got a dream trip by Joel and it worked out perfect. We are grateful to have a small string in Dubai thanks to Frank Gabriel, but as nice as Dubai is it’s not even close to Santa Anita, I mean this is the best. We are so blessed to call this home and there’s just nothing better than winning here at The Great Race Place.”

Joel Rosario (winning jockey): “I just tried to break good out of there and save some ground in the last turn and make a great run. When you have a good horse they make your job easy. We were very confident, she got out of there not very quick in the beginning. I just let her be where she was and she started getting better going into the last turn, I felt very confident after that. I just try to figure out what makes my horse happy and to help them run their best. Yes, I think when they feel comfortable, they perform.”

Big races review
