Animal rights activists have expressed outrage after a report on Japan’s “scientific whaling” programme showed that more than two-thirds of the female minke whales harpooned in the Southern Ocean earlier this year were pregnant females.

The report, submitted to a meeting of the scientific committee of the International Whaling Commission in Slovenia earlier this month, also showed that 53 of the 333 whales slaughtered were juvenile animals.

“The killing of 122 pregnant whales is a shocking statistic and sad indictment on the cruelty of Japan’s whale hunt”, said Alexia Wellbelove, of the Australia branch of Humane Society International.

“It is further demonstration, if needed, of the truly gruesome and unnecessary nature of whaling operations, especially when non-lethal surveys have been shown to be sufficient for scientific needs”, she said.

Activists accuse Tokyo of ignoring a ruling in 2014 by the International Court of Justice, in The Hague, that Japan’s whaling was a commercial exercise rather than a scientific research programme and that it had to halt.

Japanese whaling vessel the Nisshin Maru returns to the Shimonoseki port in southwestern Japan in this photo taken by Kyodo on March 31, 2017, after it and two other vessels hunted 333 minke whales in the Antarctic Ocean

Tokyo, which provides large subsidies to keep its domestic whaling industry afloat, responded by adding new research procedures and resuming operations in 2015 with a quota of 333 minke whales.

To protect itself from further legal challenges, Japan also withdrew its recognition of the International Court of Justice as an arbiter of disputes over whales.

Whale meat used to be an important source of nutrition for the Japanese but little is consumed by the general public today. Instead, whale meat is served in school meals and a handful of specialist restaurants, with the rest frozen or used as pet food.

A spokesman for the environmental group Sea Shepherd said it appeared that the Japanese whaling fleet had been “targeting pregnant females, for some reason”.

Bob Brown, the former head of the Australian Green Party and founder of an environmental foundation, told The Telegraph that the harpooning of pregnant whales was “barbaric and illegal”.

“These are the most gentle of whales and people go to the Great Barrier Reef just to rub noses with these creatures”, he said.

“Then they fall pregnant, go to the Southern Ocean and get harpooned by the Japanese while the governments of Australia, New Zealand, Britain, the US and everywhere else sit on their hands and say this criminal behaviour is okay because the Japanese government is funding it.

“The leaders who are today failing to take action have the blood of these innocent whales on their hands,” he said. “This is an international disgrace and an environmental crime”.

We are back for the sixth day of World Tag League action, but instead of the normal 3-4 matches per card, we’re only up for two as AJ Styles had to pull out of today’s show in Yamaguchi due to a lower back injury. No word on his status for the rest of the tournament, but we do know that his team has officially forfeited this match, so Katsuyori Shibata and Hirooki Goto get an extra 2 points as a result.

The Addiction vs. Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma

Okay match, but nothing special. What I like about the Addiction here that isn’t prevalent in a lot of New Japan matches is that they are heels who cheat, but not like the Bullet Club where there’s a bunch of interference. They just work like heels and that’s kinda cool. They worked on Honma for most of the match. Makabe made a comeback and eventually just pinned Kazarian with the King Kong knee drop. Pretty anti-climatic finish.

Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows vs. Tencozy

Another decent and basic formulaic match, but everyone looked good. Bullet Club jumped Tencozy right at the bell. Anderson worked a lot of the match and was in control until Kojima made a comeback. Kojima kicked out of a gun stun. BC went for the Magic Killer but Tenzan cut them off and they hit a 3D. They got rid of Gallows as Kojima worked on Anderson. Kojima hit the ropes and Gallows grabbed his feet. In a split second, Anderson laid out Tenzan with a gun stun and soon after Kojima met the same fate. BC then hit the Magic Killer as Anderson pinned Kojima.

Current Standings:

Block A:

Hiroshi Tanahashi and Michael Elgin- 4

Kazuchika Okada and Yoshi-Hashi- 4

Christopher Daniels and Kazarian- 4

Togi Makabe and Tomoaki Honma- 4

– Dean Ambrose def. I-C Champion Kevin Owens by DQ in a street fight when Owens was DQ’d for not letting go of a hold in time.

Notes:

– Lot of Owens and Ambrose merch being sold before the show.

– Leading up to the event, the match with Kalisto was advertised as against Alberto Del Rio for the U.S. championship. Right before the match was supposed to start, Barrett appeared on the arena screens and did a small promo which I imagine was him explaining why he would be facing Kalisto instead of Del Rio, but it was really hard to hear.

– “Let’s go Barrett/Barrett sucks” chants during his match. Interesting that he seemed to be the most polarizing guy there last night just based on crowd reaction.

– New Day cut a pretty good promo before their match. Basically a typical heel promo talking about how Big E was smart to get out of Iowa and that the Hawkeyes football team sucks now, referencing their loss in the Big 10 Championship game last December and the Rose Bowl. Got them good heat. Big E was covering his ears the entire time Kofi and Xavier were badmouthing the Hawks.

– Crowd popped huge for Dean. Not really unexpected, but it was the one guy everybody cheered for pretty unanimously.

France is being “flooded” with cocaine as dozens of drug ‘mules’ arrive daily in Paris on passenger flights from Guiana, a French territory in South America.

After landing in Paris, some of the drugs are then transported to the UK and other European countries, notably the Netherlands, according to French police.

Police and customs officials at Orly airport say they are “overwhelmed” by the steep rise in the number of smugglers boarding domestic flights to Paris from Cayenne, the capital of French Guiana, since 2015.

The amounts reaching France have rocketed as Colombian and other Latin American drugs gangs have started exploiting Guiana as a “back-door” to Europe, police say.

Guiana is part of France but suffers from poverty, lawlessness and high youth unemployment, providing a ready supply of people willing to carry drugs to France in return for payments of as little as €2,000 (£1,760).

A police source said the youngest mule detected so far was aged 13, the oldest over 80.

Cocaine in the environment

The ‘mules’ swallow plastic-wrapped packages of cocaine, on average carrying about 500 or 600 grams each in 50 small wraps of 12 grams each. “They’re risking death if the plastic breaks,” a police source said.

One mule arrested at Orly had swallowed 2.2 kilos of cocaine in 180 wraps.

There are usually “dozens of mules” among hundreds passengers arriving in Paris on two daily flights from Guiana, police and customs officers say. Before 2015, the number was estimated at only two or three.

Police have been warning schoolchildren in Guiana not to be tempted by the prospect of easy money.

Le Parisien newspaper quoted Eric Vaillant, the Cayenne prosecutor, as telling teenagers at one school: “The traffickers are familiar with our criteria for identifying smugglers. They’ll use some of you as decoys.”

Patrick Pichon, deputy head of Guiana’s customs service, said the authorities once identified “waiting lists of candidates” to serve as ‘mules’ posted on social media.

The majority of the ‘mules’ arrested are under 30 and most are jobless, police sources said.

Some work independently of drugs gangs, buying a kilo of cocaine in Suriname, which borders French Guiana, for less than £1,800 and selling it to dealers in France for more than £30,000 — or much more if ‘retailed’ to consumers.

The brutal strain imposed on team personnel this year amid F1’s grueling schedule isn’t lost on McLaren’s Lando Norris who is doing his part to look after his crew of mechanics.

After undergoing a frantic three-week rush in Austria and Hungary, the F1 community will enjoy a short respite before embarking on another triple-header stint, starting at Silverstone next week.

The succession of long working hours coupled with the difficulties of working under COVID-19 restrictions will inevitably test the grit and endurance of team members over the course of the season.

Norris let down McLaren with ‘worst start ever’

As a driver, Russell admits that he isn’t subjected to the same level of stress or fatigue that is currently withstood by the hard working boys in the garage.

“For the drivers it’s not too bad, you know,” he said, quoted by Motorsport.com.

“In some ways we do the least amount of work in terms of being at the track as in driving the actual race car, compared to the time mechanics spend working on the car and building it and management, or the engineers spend at the racetrack.

©McLaren

“So honestly, for us, and for me, anyway, I feel like I’m fit enough that I can go out and do the race and I’m not completely dead after it and feeling like it’s going to take ages to recover.”

Earlier this week, a picture of Norris helping his mechanics strip down his car after Sunday’s Hungarian Grand Prix went viral on social media.

It wasn’t the first time Norris had stayed on to lend his crew members a helping hand. But in light of this year’s complicated working conditions for teams, the 20-year-old feels even more compelled to support his mechanics’ efforts.

“Honestly, it is tougher for the engineers and the mechanics because they’re the guys and girls who spend the most time at the track working and travelling,” added Norris.

“It’s more of a kind of trying to look after them and keep them in good condition: especially the mechanics who are doing the pit stops and so on. They also have a big impact on performance.

“They also are the guys who can bring us overtakes and if you have good pitstops it can gain us positions and things like that.

“So, it’s trying to keep everyone in the best shape possible. For me, I’m fine, but it’s more of a question for them and I’m trying to look after them and keep them in the best condition.”

The Gophers will take on Oklahoma State, a top-10 opponent, at home.

They’ll have a chance to replicate that performance on Saturday at home.

Head assistant coach Brandon Eggum said the Gophers will be facing a very good program when they take on the No. 8 team in the nation.

“We expect a hard-fought battle this Saturday,” Eggum said. “They are a bigger team, and there is no question that our guys are excited about the opportunity to wrestle [Oklahoma State]. There [will] be some good matchups … and some fun battles to watch.” Continue reading at www.mndaily.com
