More than a quarter of a million Syrians have been displaced in the last two weeks of heavy fighting in the country’s southwest, the UN has said.

Around 270,000 people have fled their homes since the Assad regime and its allies began their assault on the southern province of Deraa on June 19, according to the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (UNHCR).

"Our latest update shows the figure of displaced across southern Syria has exceeded 270,000 people," a spokesman said. The numbers have jumped from 160,000 since last week.

As regime forces pressed further into Deraa, some of the remaining rebel factions descended into bitter recriminations over whether to surrender or keep fighting against Assad’s superior military forces.

Some of the anger erupted after footage emerged of a rebel faction in the town of Busra al-Sham handing over armoured vehicles to Russian forces, prompting accusations that the faction was collaborating with Russia.

A commander with the rebel faction, known as Youth of the Sunnah, forcefully denounced those criticising him as “sons of b——" and said he had no choice but hand over the vehicles so that displaced civilians would be allowed back.

Thousands of civilians have fled towards the borders of Jordan and the Israeli-controlled Golan Heights. They have set up camps there in the hope that Assad’s forces will be deterred from attacking near the borders.

The offensive in the southwest, which has been relatively quiet throughout the seven years of Syria’s war, has added extra pressure on Jordan.

Aid organisations have pleaded with Jordan to open its borders for new arrivals but Jordan’s government say it is already beyond capacity after taking in more than a million Syrian refugees.

Ayman Safadi, Jordan’s foreign minister, is due to fly to Moscow on Tuesday for talks with Russia over a possible ceasefire in the south.

A Chicago Weekend at SHIMMER pt. 1

July 20, 2020 | News | No Comments

Submitted by EdinSanAntonio

This past weekend, I made my way to Chicago to attend the SHIMMER DVD tapings. Twice a year, Dave Prazak and his crew bring in the best women’s wrestlers from around the world (U.S., England, Ireland, Scotland, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Canada, etc).

Many women wrestlers in WWE and NXT have made stops there over the years. If you think NXT has great women’s wrestling, you can see 60 to 70 matches as good or better at these shows.

The tapings are usually held at the Berwyn Eagles Club on Saturdays and Sundays, but this year, a Friday night show was added. The Saturday show was held at Logan Square, and if I have one complaint from the weekend, it was damn hot waiting in line to get in to the show. It didn’t help that the show was running a little late. I’m from Texas and I’m complaining about it, so that tells you it had to be hot!

Thankfully, once we got in, it felt fine. As soon as I entered, I ran into Dr. Keith Lipinski of this website and also Dave Prazak. I spoke with them and then made my way to my front row center seat.

Veda Scott defeats Nixon Newell

Veda is the perfect person to start the show. The fans here hate her with a passion and she plays it up big time. This was Nixon’s first time with SHIMMER and she did not disappoint. She did a great job and is a very attractive girl.

Shayna Baszler defeats Rhia O’Reilly

Shayna made a great debut here and won with a TKO that caused me to text Lance Storm and tell him Shayna just killed his girl. Rhia is awesome, and has one of the best intros with kick ass ring music and circles the ring carrying the Irish flag.

Kellie Skater defeats Vanessa Kraven, Shazza McKenzie, and LuFisto in a 4-way match

Over the past couple years, Skater has become one of the best women’s workers in the world. Kraven is a monster, Shazza is really good and has one of the cutest faces you will ever see. LuFisto is a legend and is still great.

Viper defeats Jessica Havok

This was one hell of a “mean guy” match, or should I say “mean women’s” match. Viper from the UK and also made her debut here. She is a female version of Earthquake, only better. Havok was also good in the match.

Mia Yim & Kay Lee Ray Defeat Yumi Ohka and Melanie Cruise

This was the debut of Team WDSS (We Do Stupid Sh*t) of Mia and Ray, and they make one hell of an awesome team. Cruise was taking the place of Cheerleader Melissa and kind of looks like she is Melissa’s bigger older sister. Ohka is always good.

Arisa Nakajima defeats Nicole Matthews

Arisa brought her JPW title with her, and had a great match with the former SHIMMER champ Nicole. Matthews is one of the best heels in wrestling.

Ruo Mizunami defeats KC Spinelli

Ruo is a veteran of the ring and is still going strong. KC danced to Ruo’s music and was having a great time. No one has more fun at a show then her.

Heart of SHIMMER Champion Nicole Savoy defeats Crazy Mary Dobson

Nicole has become one of the top workers in a very short time, and like Shayna, she uses a lot of BJJ in her match. She almost has a counter into a submission for everything. I love Crazy Mary and she is awesome, but how do you get a title shot when you are 1-4 in your last SHIMMER matches? I guess it’s about heart and not win-loss records for this title.

SHIMMER Tag Team Champions The Kimber Bombs (Kimber Lee and Cherry Bomb) defeat Team Slap Happy (Evie and Heidi Lovelace)

This is the match I really came to see and it is also the match where I wanted to kick Prazak after. This match was built up from the past tapings and looked like it was time for new champs, but sadly, it wasn’t as the Kimber Bombs cheated to win using the title belts. The bombs are incredible heels, and Heidi is one of the top women in the US. Evie is one of my favorites, and is just amazing in everyway. Her offense is incredible, her kicks are the best, and she is such a great babyface in peril. I love this woman.

SHIMMER Champion Madison Eagles defeats Courtney “The Demon” Rush

Last taping, Rush started to change into a vampire or something. She has since become a possessed demon from hell. This match featured an attempted exorcism as Eagles used forks as a cross and started yelling, “The power of Christ compels you!” Sadly, this did not work so Eagles then poured salt all along the ring to keep the Demon from getting back in, and it worked until Rush grabbed the ref and pulled him out, moving the salt in that area away and was able to get back in the ring.

After Eagles won, Arisa came out to challenge Madison and we have a main event for the next tapings.

**********

After the show, the girls came out to sell their gimmicks and take pictures with the fans. I always make it a point to buy stuff as this is a big part of their pay, so I bought Mia Yim’s newest T-shirt and 8×10’s of other girls. Some of the performers I talked to that night were Mia (who’s been a friend of mine for awhile now), Solo Darling (who didn’t wrestle on this show but was going to on the next ones), Shazza (who was very accessible), and Kellyanne (who was not able to wrestle because of an injury which is sad because she stole the show last year and became one of my favorites).

Last Saturday UFC show on FS1 saw a 37% viewership drop from the previous weekend, bringing in an average of 652,000 viewers for the four fight main card, headlined by John Lineker’s split decision win over John Dodson in a bantamweight contender’s tilt.

Click Here: cheap nsw blues jersey

This was the second lowest non-daytime rating of the year for an FS 1 main card, trailing only the July 13th show’s 609,000. The week prior was a ratings bonanza for all involved with a Brazilian show headlined by Cyborg Justino.

The show’s 11 PM EST start time was later than usual, but with only four fights, it ended around the usual time that traditional Fight Nights on the network do.

The prelims aired on FS 2 and averaged just 294,000, down 20% from the last time Fight Night prelims aired on the secondary network. It was the 3rd highest number for a Fight Night prelims show on FS 2 since the UFC’s move to the Fox family.

The UFC will look to rebound for this Saturday’s UFC 204 prelims airing at 8 PM EST on FS1, part of a big day of sports programming on the network.

A Canadian woman is taking her nephew to court over a CA $1.2 million (£690,000) lottery jackpot win, announcing “Tyrone is getting nothing from me” as the pair were presented with the over-sized cheque.

Barbara Reddick, from Guysborough in Nova Scotia, arrived for the presentation ceremony on Thursday afternoon to find, to her surprise, her nephew Tyrone MacInnis there too.

Mrs Reddick said she sat the 19-year-old down in her car in the car park, and asked him to tell what she says is the truth – that she never promised to split her winnings with him.

He refused, and entered the ceremony with her – noting that both their names were on the ticket.

“I’m taking him to court. It was my ticket,” she shouted. “Now he’s trying to lie and say I said split.”

Mrs Reddick claims she sent Mr MacInnis $100 via email transfer to buy her tickets for the Chase the Ace draw, a fundraiser for two volunteer fire departments in Margaree.

She said she told him to put his name on the ticket, beside hers, for luck – not because they planned on splitting any winnings.

“He’s always lucky with his draws, right?” said Mrs Reddick, a 57-year-old retired military maintenance technician.

“I said ‘Well, put your name on the ticket and you’ll be my good luck charm.’

“I didn’t say split. I never mentioned money at all.”

When she received a phone call saying the pair had won she claims she told the organiser: “No, I won! It was my ticket.”

Mrs Reddick said she asked her nephew, who she described as being like a son to her, how much he was expecting.

“I would have given him $150,000,” she said. “Listen, Tyrone was the son that I never had. Me and Tyrone — ask anybody — we’re very, very close.”

But Mr MacInnis said he expected half.

“Tyrone is getting nothing from me,” she said. “It’s just for the principle. We were so close. He broke my heart. He broke it. People go crazy when it comes to money.”

Mrs Reddick was presented with a cheque for half the jackpot, and then, asked how she felt, began shouting about getting a lawyer and suing Mr MacInnis.

She accused her brother, Mr MacInnis’ father, of just wanting a new truck out of the winnings.

The father was escorted out of the hall, shouting to the reporters, asking them to keep his young son’s name out of the news.

“I’ll never speak to him,” said Mrs Reddick. “In this lifetime or the next.”

A US secret service agent who suffered a stroke during Donald Trump’s visit to his Turnberry golf resort has died.

Nole Edward Remagen was serving as part of the US president’s security detail for his UK trip when he suffered the stroke on Sunday.

He had been receiving treatment at a hospital in Scotland but died from the on Tuesday surrounded by his family, the White House said.

Mr Remagen was a veteran agent with 19 years’ experience and was a "dedicated professional of the highest order", the US secret service said in a statement.

It added: “The secret service thanks the medical personnel in Scotland, in addition to the members of the White House Medical Unit and Police Scotland who provided exceptional care and support for a member of our family.”

The White House described Mr Remagen as an "elite hero" who served in the agency’s select presidential protection division.

In a tribute to Mr Remagen on Wednesday, Mr Trump said: "Our hearts are filled with sadness over the loss of a beloved and devoted Special Agent, husband, and father. Our prayers are with Special Agent Remagen’s loved ones, including his wife and two young children. We grieve with them and with his Secret Service colleagues, who have lost a friend and a brother.

"At the time of his passing, he was among the elite heroes who serve in the Presidential Protection Division of the Secret Service.

"Melania and I are deeply grateful for his lifetime of devotion, and today, we pause to honor his life and 24 years of service to our Nation."

Mr Trump ended his controversial visit to the UK with a private two-day stay at his Turnberry resort, during which he was booed by spectators as he played golf and thousands protested in Edinburgh and Glasgow.

A 55-year-old paraglider was also arrested after flying over the golf resort with a banner criticising the president.

Police Scotland said the activists had placed himself in "grave danger" with snipers position on scaffolding across the golf course.

Greenpeace, who claimed responsibility for the stunt, later said one of their activists was allowed to stay the night in Mr Trump’s Turnberry hotel despite filming the paraglider from a close proximity to the president.

Indonesian security forces and emergency workers were racing on Monday to aid victims of a magnitude 7 earthquake on Lombok that killed at least 98 people, while tourists were being evacuated from the worst-hit areas.

The tremor, which came just a week after another quake killed 17 people on the island, was also felt on the neighbouring resort island of Bali, where frightened tourists ran onto the streets.

The earthquake struck just 10km underground, according to the US Geological Survey, and was followed by a series of strong aftershocks, prompting many to spend the night outside.

"The search and rescue team is still scouring the scene and evacuating (people)," national disaster agency spokesman Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said. "We estimate the number of victims will rise."

He described the damage as  "massive" in the north of Lombok, citing an example of a collapsed mosque where worshippers are believed to have been buried during evening prayers. The rescue operation has been hampered by a lack of heavy equipment.

Some areas still hadn’t been reached, with rescuers hampered by collapsed bridges, electricity blackouts and damaged roads blocked with debris.

He said the death toll had risen to 91 and more than 200 people were seriously injured. Thousands of homes and buildings were damaged. The death toll was revised to 98 later on Monday.

Almost 1,000 tourists were being evacuated from Indonesia’s tiny Gili Islands, where the damage was extensive.

The Gilis are three coral-fringed tropical islands a few kilometres off the northwest coast of the larger Lombok island that are popular with backpackers and divers.

A British tourist on Gili Trawangan island said thousands of people, locals and tourists, were trying to get off Trawangan, after spending a night outdoors.

Saffron Amis from Brighton said  thousands of people fled to a hill near the hostel where she was staying after Sunday evening’s quake, fearing a tsunami.

She said: "There was a lot of screaming and crying particularly from the locals. We spoke to a lot of them and they were panicking about their family in Lombok."

There was widespread building damage and a somber mood on the island a day after the quake, Amis said, adding she felt lucky to be unharmed.

Mr Sutopo saod some 200 "domestic and foreign" tourists had already been taken off the islands. "There are 700 more tourists still waiting to be evacuated," he added.

Long lines were seen at the airport in Lombok’s main town, Mataram, as foreign visitors scrambled to leave.

The Garuda Indonesia airline said it was adding extra flights, and AirAsia Group CEO Tony Fernandes tweeted that the budget carrier would also try to assist the evacuation efforts.

Tourists spoke of their terror as the earthquake struck. "I was at the rooftop of my hotel and the building started swaying very hard. It felt like two metres to the left, then two metres to the right, I could not stand up," Frenchman Gino Poggiali, 43, told Reuters.

Mr Poggiali’s wife Maude, 44, said they had been holidaying with their two children and were also caught up in another powerful earthquake last week.

"This is it for me in Indonesia," she said. "Next time we will stay in France or somewhere close."

Australia’s home affairs minister tweeted that he and his delegation had been safely evacuated in darkness from a Lombok hotel where they had been staying during a regional security conference.

Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton told Fairfax Media that he was on the hotel’s 12th floor when the quake struck. He said the quake "was powerful enough to put us on the floor" and cut power.

Singapore Law and Home Affairs Minister K. Shanmugam, who was on the 10th floor of a hotel in the Lombok town of Mataram at the time of the quake, wrote on Facebook that his room shook violently and walls cracked.

"It was quite impossible to stand up. Heard screams. Came out, and made my way down a staircase, while building was still shaking. Power went out for a while. Lots of cracks, fallen doors," he wrote.

A tsunami warning was issued but later lifted. Lombok is a popular tourist destination, drawing in visitors with surfing, beaches and hiking trails.

The earthquake of last week triggered landslides that briefly trapped trekkers on popular mountain hiking routes.

Najmul Akhyar, district chief of North Lombok, told local media that he was unable to assess the entire situation due to an electrical blackout.

Television host and celebrity tweeter Chrissy Teigen was on the nearby island of Bali with her husband John Legend, the singer, and their two young children as the earthquake struck.

Ms Teigen tweeted: "Bali. Trembling. So long."

She added: "Oh man. We are on stilts. It felt like a ride."

Dwikorita Karnawati, head of the agency for meteorology, climatology and geophysics, advised people not to panic. "Please go to a place with higher ground, while remaining calm."

Ms Karnawati added that small waves just 15cm (6 inches) high had been reported in three villages. A nearby volcano was evacuated after the earthquake struck.

Indonesia straddles the so-called Pacific "Ring of Fire", where tectonic plates collide, making the nation one of the most disaster prone in the world.

Some 90 per cent of the world’s earthquakes happen in this region. Other countries including Bolivia, Chile, Japan, and the US west coast also sit on the "Ring of Fire."

In 2004 a tsunami triggered by a magnitude 9.3 undersea earthquake off the coast of Sumatra in western Indonesia killed 220,000 people in countries around the Indian Ocean, including 168,000 in Indonesia.

Why are we so bad at predicting earthquakes?

Residents in Mataram felt a strong jolt, causing them to flee their buildings. "Everyone immediately ran out of their homes, everyone is panicking," Iman, a local resident, told AFP.

Rita Siswati, another local, told AFP the tremor had caused a power outage, and said patients were being evacuated from the main hospital.

The Indonesian Red Cross said in a Tweet that it helped a woman give birth after the quake and that she named the boy ‘Gempa’, which means earthquake.

Lewis Hamilton says his Mercedes W11 is not the easiest car to exploit but the 2020 Black Arrow is to date the “best car” the German outfit has ever had.

After a complicated opening race in Austria earlier this month, Hamilton scored his first win last week at the Red Bull Ring, a victory achieved in dominant fashion.

The Briton praised Mercedes’ engineers for raising the bar once again in terms of the Brackley squad’s technological excellence.

“There have been a couple of cars in the past that have been – I think Toto [Wolff] mentioned one being a ‘diva,’ which was not the word that I particularly had used – but you know, it was a real handful the majority of the time,” Hamilton explained.

“This one’s more refined. We really worked hard last year, in really being clear and concise in picking out what the issues were with the ’19 car and what we wanted to do moving forwards.

Bottas: I won’t let one weekend ‘drag me down’

“And that just continues to come from the great communication that we have as drivers with the team, with the engineers, the understanding we have with the terminology we use, and the team really take that in, and then have implemented that into the car today.

“But we’ve only been to one track. It’s still not easy to get the lap out of the car, but I think that’s F1 in general. But it is the best car that we’ve had so far.”

While Mercedes dominated the first two rounds of the season, Hamilton insisted the team will need to bring its “A-Game” to the Hungaroring, with Red Bull and Max Verstappen seen as major threats to the German team’s early hegemony

“It is obviously naturally different to last week’s circuit being that here it’s not a power-demanding circuit, it’s more about the downforce efficiency,” he said.

“So, if we look at the previous years we’ve been here, the Red Bull has generally gone well. They tend to do even better on the circuits like this and Monaco, where it’s all about the downforce package.

“So it will definitely close up the whole field and it’s going to be a real challenge – [and] I think a good battle.

“We already saw some great performance from them in practice in Austria and I think they’re still very strong in the race.

“I think here is going to be even more so. So we really need to bring our A-game this weekend.”

Valtteri Bottas said he was eager to assess the W11 versus its rivals – and especially Red Bull – on Hungary’s high-downforce layout.

“This is a very different type of circuit and we’ve only raced on one track up to now, so we’ve only seen how the teams and the cars have performed in one particular track,” commented Bottas.

“But we’ve got many races to go through and it will be nice to see how it actually compares.

“So far it’s only speculation but it’s a fact there’s fewer straights on this track, more corners and more downforce required.

“I think typically Red Bull has been quick on the type of corners this track offers, so we’ll see.

“It was, of course, encouraging to see the pace we had, and we expect to be strong here. I’m just keen to finally see on Saturday and Sunday how do we compare to the others in this type of track.”
