Minnesota looks to build on three consecutive top-three finishes by capturing the program’s fourth national title

About 120 days after opening its 2014-15 season, Minnesota heads to the Gateway City for the NCAA Championships this Thursday, Friday and Saturday (March 19-21). Among a field of 330 student-athletes, eight Gophers look to extend a collection of streaks tied to individual and team success at Minnesota and add the program’s fourth national title to its trophy case in Dinkytown.

The Gophers have turned in top-three finishes at three consecutive NCAA tournaments, the second-longest streak in program history. Those results have been buoyed by All-American performances from Gopher wrestlers. Minnesota brings a streak of producing multiple All-Americans in 22 straight NCAA Championships to St. Louis, a run that currently includes five straight season of five or more. During this current, three-year run, Minnesota wrestlers have won 22 All-America medals, 11 of which belong to five seniors on this year’s team.

Minnesota placed second the last time NCAAs were held in St. Louis (2012) and has two additional top-five finishes in the six previous NCAA tournaments held in the Show Me State, placing third in 2000 and fifth in 2005. This season, the Gophers arrive in St. Louis after a third-place finish in the Big Ten Championships and a 12-3 dual season highlighted by seven wins over ranked opponents. Prior to Big Tens, Minnesota had competed in one other national tournament with a team score, the Cliff Keen Invitational in December. Against a field that included 11 ranked teams and nearly 100 ranked wrestlers, the Gophers claimed a pair of individual titles, as well as the team championship.

When Session I begins on Thursday morning, eight Gophers will hit the mat and compete for NCAA titles – three for the first time in their careers and five for the last.

The lone Gopher to receive an at-large bid to this year’s tournament will be the first in action. At 125, true freshman Ethan Lizak was wearing a redshit in mid-January, but injuries forced him into action and he made his dual debut on Jan. 25 against Penn State. Since then, Lizak has picked up a pair of major decisions against Big Ten opponents and a ranked victory over then-No. 13 Josh Rodriguez (North Dakota State) on Feb. 21. He will open the tournament against No. 13 seed Ben Willeford (Cleveland State). An upset in that match would likely have Lizak facing Big Ten champ Nathan Tomasello (Ohio State), while a loss could potentially set up a rematch with Rodriguez in the second round of wrestlebacks.

Chris Dardanes enters the tournament as the top seed at 133 pounds, He earned that position by compiling a 23-0 record this season, a mark that includes 12 wins over ranked opponents and a Big Ten championship. His 23 wins represent both the best start to a season and the longest winning streak of his collegiate career. After wrestling at 141 last season, Dardanes is back at the weight at which he captured All-America medals as both a freshman and a sophomore. Though the Big Ten makes up more than one-third of the field at 133 (12 of 33 wrestlers), it is unlikely Dardanes will see a conference opponent until at least the semifinals, where either fourth-seed Johnni DiJulius (Ohio State) or fifth-seed Zane Richards (Illinois) could be waiting. Dardanes will open the tournament against Connor Schram (Stanford).

Nick Dardanes also returns to a weight where he’s previously earned All-America honors and enters this year’s 141 bracket as the No. 6 seed. Dardanes is the only Gopher who will kick off his tournament against an opponent whom he has already wrestled this season when he opens against Steven Rodrigues (Illinois). Dardanes scored a 9-4 decision over Rodrigues when the two met during a conference dual in Minneapolis on Jan. 18. Should he reach the finals, Dardanes may encounter top-seed and three-time defending champion Logan Stieber (Ohio State). In their match during a Feburary dual, Dardanes lost by a single point, the closest of any of Stieber’s matches this year.

As the No. 3 seed at 157, Dylan Ness represents the second-highest seeded Gopher in the field. Ness reached the title match at the Big Ten Championships for the third time in his career two weeks ago and hopes to wrestle in his third NCAA title match on Saturday. It would be Ness’ second straight appearance in the 157 championship after finishing as runner-up to Alex Dieringer (Oklahoma State) last season. Ness loss just two matches this year – to top-seed Isaiah Martinez (Illinois) and second-seed Brian Realbuto (Cornell). Those two could likely be Ness’ final two opponents in his quest for his first national title. If Ness were to capture All-America honors this year, he would join a select club of Gophers, one which currently has just eight members, as four-time All-Americans at Minnesota. He and his brother, Jayson, would be the first brother tandem in that elite group. Ness’ tournament will begin with a match against Brandon Zeerip (Eastern Michigan).

The other Gopher looking at the prospect of a four-time All-American career is Logan Storley, the sixth seed at 174. Storley will be the higher seed in his first two matches of the tournament before a potential quarterfinal match with Mike Evans (Iowa), the No. 3 seed. Evans and Storley have wrestled six times in their careers previously, including a pair of overtime victories for Evans this season. For Storley, winning a national title could mean not only defeating Evans, but all three of his chief conference rivals, with second-seed Matt Brown (Penn State) and defending national champion and top-seed Robert Kokesh (Nebraska) both appearing as possible opponents. A potential second-round match with Zane Richards (Illinois) means there’s a chance Storley’s championship path will exclusively feature Big Ten opponents after the first round, where he will face Brian Harvey (Army).

Brett Pfarr makes his NCAA Championships debut this season as the No. 11 seed at 184, taking on Scott Patrick (Davidson) in the first round. Pfarr is coming off a title match appearance at the Big Ten tournament and a rugged season in which he has wrestled a team-high 18 ranked opponents in 33 matches. With Pfarr’s ranked-heavy schedule, he’s faced many of the wrestlers he’ll encounter in St. Louis. An opening-round win would guarantee him a very familiar opponent in the second round – either Kenny Courts (Ohio State), against whom Pfarr is 2-1 this season including a victory at the Big Ten Championships, or sixth-seeded Hayden Zillmer (North Dakota State), who has nipped Pfarr three times this season by a grand total of four points.

As the fifth seed at 197, Scott Schiller is seeded to become an All-American for the third time in three career NCAA tournament appearances. Looking across the other top seeds at his weight, there aren’t many mysteries awaiting Schiller in later rounds – this year alone, including the NWCA All-Star Classic exhibition match in which he defeated top-seed and defending national champion J’Den Cox (Missouri), 5-3, Schiller has wrestled seven of the other eight top seeds at his weight. If he handles his opening-round opponent, Bryce Barnes (Army), and sees an upset in the other pairing in his quadrant, there’s a chance Schiller could wrestle four rematches en route to a potential championship, starting with Cody Crawford (Oregon State), whom Schiller defeated 17-6 during December’s Aloha Open.

Among the three Gophers making their first career appearance in the national tournament, heavyweight Michael Kroells will be the last to get started when he challenges Garrett Ryan (Columbia). As a No. 9 seed, Kroells is the highest seed first-timer on the Gopher roster. He enters the NCAAs after placing fifth at Big Tens and narrowly missing an opportunity to knock off eventual conference champion Mike McMullan (Northwestern) in the quarterfinals. With an opening-round victory in St. Louis, Kroells would be guaranteed a rematch with either Jacob Aiken-Phillips (Cornell), who Kroells defeated at the NWCA National Duals, 10-1, or Jimmy Lawson (Penn State), who edged Kroells 3-1 in a dual earlier this season. His No. 9 seed also means Kroells could be the first Gopher to face a top seed at his weight, with defending national champ Nick Gwiazdowski (N.C. State) looming as a potential quarterfinal opponent.

Fans can catch any match of the 2015 NCAA Championships either on TV or online via a variety of ESPN platforms. All Thursday sessions, along with Friday’s quarterfinal matches and Saturday’s medal rounds, will be broadcast on ESPNU. Friday night’s championship semifinals and Saturday night’s championship bouts will be broadcast on ESPN. All matches also will be streamed on ESPN3, with options to watch any mat or to stream up to four mats simultaneously. As always, in addition to broadcast coverage, fans can follow Gopher Wrestling on Twitter for updates throughout the tournament. Recaps from each day of the event will be available on GopherSports.com.

LAS VEGAS, NEV. – A talented field of 150 wrestlers from across the United States and Canada made for an excellent showing at the 2015 Western Junior Greco-Roman Regionals.

Of the champions, Minnesota’s Jake Allar won the Outstanding Wrestler award for the 2015 competition. The 2012 Cadet World Team member and 2014 ASICS/Vaughan Cadet National freestyle champion had a stellar performance throughout the day at 152 pounds, defeating Jesse Jeffries by technical fall in the first-place finals, 16-6.

“The kid was really strong. He scored six [points] right away and kind of caught me sleeping. After that, I just go to my offense and ended up scoring those 16 points,” said Allar. Continue reading at www.teamusa.org

Liv Morgan may have suffered a concussion on tonight’s WWE RAW from Denver.
Tonight’s show saw The Riott Squad defeat The Bella Twins and Natalya in six-woman action but the announcers noted towards the end that Morgan had been taken to the backstage trainer’s room to be evaluated. Ruby Riott and Sarah Logan finished the match together.
It appears Morgan was knocked out on her feet after taking the Yes kicks from Brie Bella. One kick connected a bit high and hit Liv in the face. She went down and did kick out of a pin attempt, and later was involved in a triple suplex spot but she was pulled from the ring right after.

Morgan was undergoing concussion tests backstage after being removed from the ring, according to PWInsider. No word yet on test results and if she suffered a concussion but we will keep you updated.
Brie Bella tweeted the following on Liv potentially being injured:

Every match on #Raw is an opportunity for us to entertain our fans. Our intentions as @WWE Superstars is to win the match, never injure our opponents. Thinking about @YaOnlyLivvOnce tonight. ?? -B

Only a few hours ago, John Cena returned to a WWE ring at Super Show-Down and teamed up with Bobby Lashley to take on the team of Kevin Owens and Elias. Cena and Lashley defeated their opponents with tremendous ease, and some fans even noted that Cena did not take any bumps at all during the bout. According to an update from WrestlingNews.co, Cena is still living in China right now to film the upcoming movie, “Project X.” The producers of the film did not want to risk one of the stars of the movie receiving an injury, which is why Cena’s time in the ring as limited, and it is also the reason why the former world champion has tweaked his look. Cena will be in China for two more months to finish the movie, but he could make some appearances at WWE’s Crown Jewel and SmackDown 1000 shows.
WWE just concluded their Super Show-Down event in Melbourne, Australia a few hours ago, and the show was headlined by a no-disqualification match that saw Triple H finally get a win over The Undertaker before “The Phenom” and Kane suddenly ambushed “The Game ” and Shawn Michaels. That was only one of the huge matches that WWE used to promote the event, and it appears that WWE’s recent visit to Australia payed off. WWE announcer Michael Cole claimed during the show that 70,309 fans filled up the Melbourne Cricket Ground for Super Show-Down. No word on whether or not this is an inflated number by WWE, but this figure would top the 56,734 attendance number from WWE’s Global Warning tour in Melbourne from 2002. “The MCG” can seat around 100,000 people.

Official attendance at the WWE Super Show-Down tonight is 70,309! #WWESSD @WWEAustralia

On Super Show-Down, Becky Lynch was able to retain her SmackDown Women’s Championship over Charlotte Flair. However, it was not exactly a clean victory for Lynch as she was able to grab onto her title and attack Flair with it during a submission attempt from the former champion in order to lose the match via disqualification but keep the championship. As a result of the fluke outcome, Lynch will be forced to defend the title against Charlotte Flair at least one more time on SmackDown this Tuesday night. A match for the SmackDown Women’s Championship still has not been confirmed for Evolution yet, but fans will not have to wait long to see the next title defense from Becky Lynch as it takes place in just a few more days.

It is a great time to be a pro wrestling fan as not only does men’s wrestling flourish at this time and age, but women’s wrestling is at a whole different level with the sudden rise of the women’s evolution/revolution. A monumental edition of WWE NXT, headlined by a double main event of NXT Tag Team Champions The Undisputed ERA vs. The War Raiders & Nikki Cross vs. Bianca Belair, streams tonight on the award-winning WWE Network.
Will The War Raiders’ Hunt Lead To NXT Tag Team Title Gold?
Having barnstormed Tag Team divisions around the globe, The War Raiders will now get their chance to take the throne in NXT when they challenge Undisputed ERA’s Kyle O’Reilly & Roderick Strong for The NXT Tag Team Titles.

Hanson & Rowe have made their goal of world domination abundantly clear since arriving to the black-and-yellow brand in April. The modern-day Vikings have trounced every NXT team to cross their path, and following O’Reilly & Strong’s successful title defense against Moustache Mountain at TakeOver: Brooklyn IV, they made their presence felt in a most thunderous way, attacking Undisputed ERA in a ferocious blitz.
The War Raiders haven’t let up since then, finding every opportunity to stymie Undisputed ERA’s attempts to impose gang-like beat-downs. O’Reilly & Strong, meanwhile, maintain that nobody, not even Hanson & Rowe, are in their league. What will happen when the two utterly destructive squads face off?
Nikki Cross & Bianca Belair Ready For Rematch:
After their first one-on-one match ended in total bedlam but with no definitive winner, Nikki Cross & Bianca Belair will throw down again in a rematch tonight on WWE NXT.

The ring couldn’t contain the action the last time NXT’s Twisted Sister & The EST squared off, resulting in a double count-out. However, the referee’s decision didn’t stop Cross from landing an unforgettable final blow as she leapt off the announce desk onto Belair and a pack of NXT Officials in an utterly wild scene.
Their return match is all but guaranteed to be just as chaotic. Can Cross, who claims to hold the secret to what happened to Aleister Black, put that controversy aside long enough to focus on her “playtime”? Or will Belair still be un-de-feat-ed when the dust settles tonight on WWE Network?
Can Burch & Lorcan Continue Their Winning Ways?

Beloved bruisers Danny Burch & Oney Lorcan, who are intent on getting back in title contention after a harrowing facial injury took Lorcan out of action for months, will bring their gritty, smash-mouth stylings to the ring tonight.
In their first match back after Lorcan’s injury, The Brit-Am alliance stood united in defeating Brazil’s Cezar Bononi & Adrian Jaoude last month. Can they achieve the same result tonight?
Shayna Baszler Looks To Make A Statement On The Road To WWE Evolution:
Shayna Baszler will take a break from the intense training of her WWE Evolution fight camp to re-enter The NXT ring tonight.
As if The Submission Magician wasn’t already terrifying, her singular focus on regaining The NXT Women’s Title from Kairi Sane at WWE Evolution has turned Baszler into an even more dangerous opponent. The Pirate Princess remains convinced she can repeat against Baszler, while The Queen Of Spades — who has enlisted Four Horsewomen teammates Jessamyn Duke & Marina Shafir to assist with her training — says she’s learned from her mistakes that cost her the title at TakeOver: Brooklyn IV.
Will The NXT Universe witness an even more vicious side of The Queen Of Spades when she returns to action on WWE Network? Find out tonight on WWE NXT!

Urijah Faber, one of the most historically pivotal fighters in U.S. MMA history, announced that he would be retiring after his December 17th fight with Brad Pickett at UFC on FOX 22. The fight will take place at the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, Faber’s home town.

Faber made the announcement today on the MMA Hour with Ariel Helwani.

Faber, 37, was pushed to be the top star of World Extreme Cage fighting when UFC purchased the company in 2007 to have a separate property to put on NBC Sports Network. Due to UFC having exclusivity with Spike, and NBC Sports Network wanting to pay for a regular MMA product, UFC purchased an existing company.

Faber, as WEC featherweight champion, immediately became a major favorite, and after a 2008 fight with Jens Pulver drew tremendous television ratings, the idea that fighters under 155 pounds couldn’t draw in MMA was dead for good. Faber remained a major star, and the PPV success of his losing challenge to Jose Aldo in 2010 led to UFC closing down WEC and bringing the lighter weight divisions to the company starting at the end of 2010.

Faber’s WEC title run was from March 17th, 2006, when he defeated Cole Escovedo, and he then retained the title five times before losing to Mike Brown on November 5, 2008. From there, Faber lost six straight title matches in challenging for either the featherweight or bantamweight titles.

He had struggled the past two years, losing three of his last four fights, including a decision to Jimmie Rivera and a far more one-sided title loss to Dominick Cruz than in their second meeting years earlier.

He also had recruited a number of fighters, including Chad Mendes and T.J. Dillashaw, and his Team Alpha Male in Sacramento was considered the top camp in the U.S. for smaller fighters.

UFC 205 got off to a rollicking start Friday morning as several fighters missed weight, officially canceling one main card fight and nearly putting another in jeopardy.

Kelvin Gastelum, set to fight Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone on the PPV main card, didn’t bother even coming to the scale for the official Friday morning weigh-ins.

He tweeted that he wouldn’t be fighting Cerrone due to not being able to make the weight limit and that he will have to re-evaluate things in his life. He said everyone has bad days, but that he promised it wouldn’t happen again. Officials had no idea he wasn’t going to attempt to weigh in, causing some confusion at the end of the weigh-ins.

The problem with Gastelum’s statement is that this marks the third time he’s missed weight in his UFC career, one in which has struggled with making 170 pounds repeatedly. He won a season of TUF at 185 pounds and actually had to fight at that weight in a June 2015 bout against Nate Marquardt as a sort of punishment by the promotion.

Cerrone was set to fight Robbie Lawler at the event until the former champion had to pull out, citing needing more recovery time after his loss at the hands of Tyron Woodley. There will be no replacement opponent for the popular Cerrone who was said to be furious at the news. He was paid his show money.

UFC announced it will now be a five fight PPV card, likely meaning the extended 30 minute PPV window they originally got is now for naught.

Further down the card, Thiago Alves missed weight by more than 7 pounds (162.6) for his Fight Pass clash against Jim Miller. Due to NY state regulations, Miller had to be within seven pounds of Alves in order for the fight to go on, meaning he couldn’t weigh in at 155 pounds.

Miller hit his mark at 157.6, so the fight will go on if Alves doesn’t weight more than 173 pounds on Saturday.

Alves is a Mike Dolce client, but Dolce released a statement to Ariel Helwani during the weigh-ins saying that Alves and his team diverted from the plan and went with a non-scientific method to cut.
