Employment figures which show 400,000 refugees are in work or training vindicate Angela Merkel’s approach to integration, the head of the German Employers’ Federation (BDA) has claimed.

Ingo Kramer said Ms Merkel’s policy of allowing over a million refugees into the country had benefited the country’s businesses.

“Yes, ‘we are doing it’ with integration,” Mr Kramer told the Augsburger Allgemeine newspaper.

“Of more than one million people who have come to Germany since 2015, almost 400,000 have an apprenticeship or job.” he added.

The BDA head said the speed with which refugees had found work had surprised him.

“Most young migrants can speak German so well after one year of instruction that they can participate in vocational school lessons,” he said, adding: "Our companies are making this happen.”

“Above all, the medium-sized firms are looking for [refugees as] employees.”

Alexander Gauland, leader of the populist AfD, responded by accusing Mr Kramer of ‘living on another planet’.

“German citizens are confronted on a daily basis with the consequences of the irresponsible policy of open borders: growing housing shortages, rising rents and a never-ending series of terrible assaults,” the AfD head claimed.

Employment experts have also shown more caution. Acknowledging the fact that 600,000 refugees are reliant on social security payments, Thomas Liebig a migration expert at the OECD, told a radio station in August that “their way into the job market is long – we shouldn’t have any illusions about that.”

The ‘open-door’ policy caused much controversy when Ms Merkel announced it in 2015 with the words “we can do it”.

The phrase quickly turned into a worldwide rallying call for the refugee crisis, as the country opened its door to refugees mostly from Syria and Afghanistan.

Local communities soon struggled under the financial strain of providing housing and schools to refugee families, and domestic opponents accused Ms Merkel of indulging in lofty rhetoric while leaving local authorities in the lurch.

As public skepticism grew ahead of last year’s election, Ms Merkel promised to stop using the phrase all together.

Maurin Pisani picked the last of this year’s jasmine flowers and held it to his nose, breathing in the delicate perfume. Behind him the Maritime Alps, beneath, the hills of Grasse rolling to the sea.

“Their smell changes all the time because they are alive. Sometimes of mango, apricot and banana, sometimes almonds and coconut, and when they start to wilt, the animal odour of indole,” said the 34-year-old.

“You mean cat pee,” responded his partner Anne Caluzio, 32, with a laugh.

Joking apart, the couple are living proof that flower power is finally returning to the French Riviera town famed for its scent.

The pair started planting jasmine grandiflorum – a key ingredient in top French perfumes like J’adore L’Or or Chanel number 5 – in their farm in June. It is back-breaking work as every tiny flower has to be harvested by hand over a three-month period.

But if all goes to plan, within four to five years, they will be the second biggest producers of the prized white flower in France.

After decades in the doldrums, Grasse is in the midst of a perfume renaissance, which culminated last month with it being crowned by UNESCO as a world “intangible cultural heritage” treasure.

Central to that rebirth has been a revival in the local production of its famed roses, jasmine and tuberose, among others.

Grasse has been renowned as the world’s perfume capital since the 16th century, when scent was used to hide the awful odours from its burgeoning tannery industry and to produce fragrant gloves for the King.

While it continued to live off its name, globalisation and the rise of cheaper alternatives in countries like India and Tunisia killed off Grasse’s flower production in recent decades.

Meanwhile, sky-high land prices on the Côte d’Azur spurred many farmers to sell their land. The fields around here were covered with 2,000 hectares (5,000 acres) of flowers at the start of the 20th century. Today only around 40 hectares remain.

But a small band of tenacious growers refused to give up.

Among them was Armelle Janody, 49, a former French teacher, who with her partner and sound engineer Rémy Foltête, 58, and their children ditched everything to become rose farmers seven years ago.

Locals, many of whom used to be in the flower trade before it dried up in the 1980s, looked askance when she started planting the region’s famous rose centifolia.

“The old-timers really suffered from the decline. One day, my neighbour found no more flower pickers for his jasmine fields and ripped them all up in anger,” she said while pruning roses.

“So when I arrived, he said who does she think she is? Everyone bet on us dying within two years,” she recalled.

Members of her Fleurs d’Exception du Pays de Grasse association, which represents local growers, managed to reverse the decline by changing business model.

In the past, they were at the mercy of local industrial firms that processed the flowers to extract their scent. When these increasingly turned to synthetic aromas, demand plummeted, so the growers decided to approach France’s top perfumers directly.

“It worked because a return to natural raw materials was in fashion,” she said.

Today, Ms Janody and most flower producers have signed exclusive contracts with giant luxury groups like Chanel and more recently LVMH, which owns Dior and Louis Vuitton and bought a chateau in the area in 2016.

Given the small quantities produced, local independent perfumers complain they have been all but shut out of the market.

“Grasse has to be careful to not let the bigger forces continue to control flower production even if it is thanks to them that that new producers are starting up,” said Jessica Buchanan, a Canadian perfumer based in central Grasse.

But this may change. With demand rising, local authorities last month ring-fenced a further 70 hectares of local land for flower producers. Mr Pisani’s estate, for example, was saved from the clutches of a real estate agency.

That initiative was backed by senator and ex-mayor Jean-Pierre Leleux, who also spearheaded Grasse’s UNESCO bid.

He said the new UN status would help preserve Grasse’s savoir-faire that “could be lost if we don’t organise ways of passing it on to future generations”. For example, the area only has a handful of individuals who know how to graft Grasse roses and one remaining glass blower for old-style bottles.

UNESCO recognises what Mr Leleux calls the “holy trinity” of Grasse, which comprises not just the cultivation of perfume plants but also the knowledge and processing of natural raw materials, and the art of creating a perfume.

Some of the town’s companies are world leaders in extracting fragrance from raw materials using a range of methods and age-old know-how. One, Robertet, has just reintroduced an ancient technique of "enfleurage" whereby individual flowers are placed on fat, which absorbs their smell.

Grasse is also famed for its “nez”, among them Fabrice Pellegrin, 50, a “scent composer” whose father was a perfumer and mother a jasmine picker. Whereas the untrained nose can discern only around 15 smells, he can single out up to 4,000.

Grasse, he said, had long thrived by jealously guarding its perfume secrets, only passing them down inside family-run businesses. “For example, for months I tried to reproduce the scent of a fresh Grasse jasmine flower,” he said.

“My father told me: ’It’s good but if you want it to smell natural, add basil.’ I took his advice. He was right.”

Worried such elders would take their secrets to the grave, he helped open this year the first comprehensive perfume school in Grasse, the Ecole Supérieur du Parfum, covering everything from olfaction to sourcing and marketing. His son is a student.

Magali Delporte

There was nowhere better to learn than Grasse, he said.  “We’re lucky to be squeezed between the mountains and the sea with a unique microclimate perfect for perfume flowers,” he said. They may be dozens of times more expensive than their foreign rivals, but they were unique, he said.

“You can plant the same botanic species here, in India, Morocco and Egypt. They will all have different smells but the most beautiful, rich and noble will be those from Grasse,” he said.

Back in their field, Maurin Pisani and Anne Caluzio started placing white veils over their prized jasmine shrubs to stop them freezing in winter.

“We have arrived at a time of a renaissance and feel very lucky,” said Mr Pisani.

“There is more land up for grabs and more and more candidates to be flower growers,” said Ms Caluzio. “This is just the beginning.”

The Cleveland Browns seem to have a lion’s share of the fans with the ranks of the WWE Superstars. Along with very vocal Cleveland fans Mike “The Miz” Mizanin and Dolph Ziggler, the Browns had some additional NXT Superstars show their support on Sunday. Apparently, Ethan Carter III, Johnny Gargano and Candice LaRae are Browns fans and were on hand to watch Cleveland defeat the Cincinnati Bengals, 26-18. As previously reported, Enzo Amore appeared at The West Side Comedy Club in New York City on Wednesday night. Before the appearance, Enzo decided to lurk outside of The WWE Live Event at Madison Square Garden, which is about three miles from the comedy club.
Enzo had crashed last month’s WWE Survivor Series PPV in Los Angeles and was kicked out of the arena after he got on a chair and revealed his identity while revving up the fans. At the following night’s RAW, WWE posted a photo of Enzo at the arena for security to make sure he didn’t make it in. This time, it appears as if Enzo never tried to make it into the arena and he just posed for photos with fans, as seen below.
During his appearance at The West Side Comedy Club on Wednesday, Enzo discussed crashing The Survivor Series PPV. Enzo said that he pulled off the stunt because Vince McMahon would both “hate” and “respect” it, as seen below:

“Why did I do it? It had nothing to do with my music,” Enzo told the crowd. “I’ll tell you why I did it. Because I knew for a fact that Vince McMahon would hate it more than anything in the world, but he would respect the f–k out of it. That’s why I did it. Because it was about one person, and that was it. Because I proved to him that I could beat him at his own game of statistics and numbers, and this & that & the other, and I don’t even work for your company. I broke no laws, I bought a ticket and with that said, I did purchase my ticket. … $2,500. My name was on the ticket, they could’ve found me.”
Below are a few photos of fans posing with Enzo outside of MSG:

Crews earned a title shot by winning an impromptu “Fresh Start” Battle Royal on the New Year’s Eve edition of RAW from Detroit. Here’s a video interview Crews gave to Dasha Fuentes which WWE released after the show:

Veteran wrestler & WWE Hall Of Famer Bully Ray has nearly 30 years of pro wrestling experience under his belt, so he has much higher standards than most people in the business. On a recent episode of The WINCLY Podcast, Bully spoke to Wrestling Inc. Managing Editor Nick Hausman in-depth about what constitutes a truly great heel.
Bully’s recent work in Ring Of Honor saw him engage in a rivalry with Flip Gordon that culminated with an “I Quit” Match at ROH: Final Battle. With Gordon being the ultimate babyface, Bully’s heel work was turned up a notch. He explained that he takes an “old-school” mentality when it comes to being a heel in the sense that he does anything possible to make sure the fans hate him. With heels getting cheered more often nowadays, he thinks there are more “bad guys” in this business than there are true heels, as seen below:
“A good heel elicits no emotions of joy from a wrestling crowd. A real heel is despised. A real heel is hated. A real heel does nothing that brings any happiness to anybody at any given time. And I really, truly believe that, and it’s a very old-school mentality when it comes to the heel that I am. In wrestling today, you have a lot of bad guys; there’s some bad guys, there’s some bad girls, but there’s no real heels. I talk about real heels, and I think even a better definition of what I do is I believe I’m the last of the ‘old-school’ heels,” Bully said. “New-school heels are good from time to time, but they tend to be a little bit more entertaining, and I don’t think that my heels should ever be entertaining first. If being entertaining is a by-product of what you’re doing, you can’t control that, because some people just root for the bad guys, and you can’t help that. I try to do my best to make sure that everybody hates me, and in-turn, if everybody hates me, that means they love the good guy that I’m in there with. That’s my job, and a lot of people don’t stick to their job nowadays.”

The rise of social media has also affected the way heels can work because of how superstars can separate their personal lives from their wrestling personas. Also, with how sensitive society currently is, it is much easier to get into hot water if someone says the wrong thing. Bully said that he doesn’t see this as a detriment, but rather believes heels have to come up with more creative ways to elicit negative reactions, as seen below:
“I don’t think it’s harder to be a heel at all, I just think you have to be a little bit smarter. Obviously, you can’t say a lot of the things that you could say 20 years ago, you can’t push a lot of the same buttons that you could push 20 years ago, so you have to find new buttons to push in a way that is I guess entertaining and offensive, but not over-the-top offensive. So I think modern-day heels just have to be smarter. I go out there and I try to offend, I try to get that hatred because that’s what wrestling lacks these days,” he said. “I hear a lot of people out there, a lot of bad guys that get complimented on their ‘heel work.’ Well that means that they’re just playing the bad guy on any given day. I can be the bad guy for a year, for two years, I could’ve been the bad guy my entire career. I embrace it, I think too many other people shun it. Especially with social media today, too many wrestlers are chasing the hug on Twitter and on their Instagram they want so many people to like them. They think that if they get ‘likes’ and retweets it means how over they are. The only thing that constitutes how over you are is the amount of zero’s in your bank account. That determines whether or not you’re over, because if you’re over, you’re a draw and you’re making money.”
When discussing how far is too far, the question of racism came up. It is no secret that there have been many gimmicks, segments and feuds in the history of pro wrestling that were tasteless because they relied on racial heat. Bully pointed to one of the most egregious instances when D-Generation X impersonated The Nation Of Domination, mentioning how there was much less backlash during tTe Attitude Era than there would have been today. He said that he never thinks it is a good idea to try to get over as a heel by using racism, as seen below:
“Being a racist, I don’t think has ever been a smart way to go. I mean, people have pushed those buttons in the past, I’ve probably pushed those buttons once or twice myself. But no, racial heat is not good,” he said. “But then I’ll ask you this: how come DX doing an impersonation of the Nation of Domination was acceptable, but if you ever tried to do that today, you’d be fired?… What I mean is, some people may have said it was acceptable, but it aired on TV, nobody got reprimanded, there was no apology made, there was no backlash from it… I’m not saying it’s right or wrong, I’m just saying that type of stuff was done before and the backlash wasn’t nearly as severe as it would’ve been today. Now I don’t think a racial way is the right way to go, that’s a button that I don’t think I would push.”

Bully’s feud with Gordon was brutal both mentally and physically. He said that it was important for the story that they went as far as they did because it made the payoff at Final Battle that much more meaningful, as seen below:
“I think it comes with being a veteran, knowing that if I’m going to do something like I did to Flip in the arena and cane him, that there has to be a payoff. There has to be a happy ending, there has to be a good result,” he said. “If I’m just doing it to him for the sake of doing it to him, I really don’t have a problem with the physicality, but if he can’t get his revenge, it doesn’t do good for the storytelling and it doesn’t do good for the character. So yeah, there is a method to that madness, that kind of physicality is being done for a reason. It’s being done because that’s part of the story, and there’s gonna be a definitive end result.”
Bully was also asked about a possible upcoming retirement. For now, he is enjoying the ride and doesn’t see himself stopping anytime soon, as seen below:

“I’m a f**king machine and the wrestling business needs a heel like me,” he said.

Mark Hall Named MWCA Mr. Minnesota Wrestler

July 13, 2020 | News | No Comments

Mark Hall’s varsity wrestling career at Apple Valley started as a 7th grader. He was impressed by the welcoming environment that he experienced and attributed it to head coaches Jim Jackson and Dalen Wasmund as well as the entire coaching staff and team.

Mark finished his high school career this past spring with an overall record of 277-4 along with six individual state titles and six team titles. In the words of athletic director Pete Buesgens, the team titles mean as much or more to Mark than his individual titles. Pete is pretty confident that the twelve gold medals in wrestling earned by Mark Hall will not be matched anytime soon.

In addition to his high school accomplishments, Mark has had some outstanding off-season accomplishments including three Cadet National titles and a FILA Cadet World Championship. He defeated a number of nationally ranked wrestlers in postseason competition in the past few years including Isaiah Martinez, this year’s 157-pound Division I National Champion from the University of Illinois.

Mark will graduate with a 3.6 G.P.A. and according to Pete Buesgens, he is always willing to lend a hand wherever and whenever there is a need. In addition to volunteering at the local Habitat for Humanity, Mark also helps out at a homeless shelter called Mary’s Place and is always willing to work with youth wrestling programs in the Apple Valley and surrounding area. Hall is a contributing member of the Apple Valley Captains Council and was selected to represent his school at the Region 3AA Leadership Workshop.

Mark’s English teacher, Robert Helgeson, calls Hall a young man of fine character whose integrity is absolute. He goes on to say, “It would be easy for Mark to carry his wrestling persona into the classroom and enjoy the athletic accomplishments he has earned, but Mark brings none of that. He assumes no airs but is respectful, cooperative, and eager to contribute to the overarching goals of the class. Mark Hall is the sort of person I would want my own children to have as a friend.”

Dalen Wasmund, head wrestling coach and mathematics instructor, characterizes Hall this way, “Mark leads by example in my math classroom. He asks thoughtful questions and is entrenched in the subject matter.” Wasmund goes on to say, “Mark’s true leadership skills are on display in the wrestling arena. He is humble and kind, fierce and competitive, driven and unapologetic. Mark is always willing to give his time to help little kids and loves putting smiles on their faces. I would be proud to have him as a son.”
