Home / Month: July 2020

Over the last few months, there has been a mass exodus from The Bullet Club as many of The ELITE members are trying their hands at their own promotion: AEW. That has presumably left some openings within The Bullet Club and Tama Tonga speculated on which Superstars could help fill those voids, as seen below:
“There’s a lot of talent, especially ones making a splash,” Tonga told Wrestling Inc. on today’s episode of The WINCLY. “Guys are wanting to leave certain companies… The Revival – those guys have piqued an interest. Those guys are great workers and I always watch their stuff…
“There’s a lot of indie promotions we look at, especially in Australia and England. But that’s pretty much under wraps for now.”

Tonga coincidentally brought up The Revival right after news of them requesting their release became public. Tonga speculated as to why some wrestlers are wanting to leave WWE, as seen below:
“I think the market is a good time for guys to grab work elsewhere,” stated Tonga. “You can get more eyes on you maybe… Guys are thinking there’s maybe greener pastures out there.
“So, there’s options. It makes wrestlers think, ‘Hey, if I’m not being utilized here, then I can go out and be utilized somewhere else.’”
With the rise of AEW and other viable options such as New Japan, ROH & IMPACT, there is more than just WWE out there for wrestlers and wrestling fans.

“It’s great. It’s cool. Wasn’t the 90s like that? The 90s was like that, so it’s cool,” said Tonga who also spoke about the fact that so many guys from the Bullet Club and NJPW have experienced success elsewhere.
“I think it speaks for, not only The Club, but New Japan. Guys that come from New Japan. It speaks high value for our company.”
Speaking of former Bullet Club members, Tonga revealed if he still stays in contact with those guys who have headed over to WWE, as seen below:

“I’ve sent messages to [AJ Styles and Finn Balor],” said Tonga. “I’ve sent messages to Karl, Doc Gallows. Those are our friends. Those are our brothers. We see what they’re doing and we wish them well. Always love there.”
When asked if he would ever welcome back those guys into The Bullet Club if they wanted to return, Tonga didn’t mince words, as seen below:
“Oh yeah, in a heartbeat,” Tonga replied. “Those are our brothers, of course. They left on good terms with us. We’re brothers.”
With Styles, Balor & The Good Brothers in WWE, there are all the ingredients in place for a Bullet Club faction to come together. But that hasn’t happened and Tonga speculated as to why, as seen below:
“I don’t know,” said Tonga. “They tried a couple of times with The Club thing. Did it go over well? I wasn’t paying attention at that time.
“Maybe they don’t wanna go back to something that was done before, especially somewhere else. From my understanding, WWE likes to do things on their own.”
The Bullet Club will be hosting a Bullet Club Block Party in New Jersey this April. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.

Ring of Honor returned to the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas for the second straight night as the venue hosted Saturday’s post-Death Before Dishonor television tapings.

– The Luchasaurus defeated Hyperstreak Gregory Sharpe

–  Kenny King defeated Chase Owens

King faked an injury before pinning Owens with a small package.

– Flip Gordon vs. Shane Taylor

Gordon got on the microphone before the match and talked about his feud with Bully Ray. Bully came out and taunted him, leading to Silas Young entering from the crowd and low blowing Gordon.

Taylor, Bully, and Young beat down Gordon and challenged anyone to come make the save for him, but no one did.

– Nick Aldis defeated Christopher Daniels

This match was taped for HonorClub.

– ROH Tag Team Champions The Briscoes defeated Coast 2 Coast (LSG & Shaheem Ali) to retain their titles

– Jeff Cobb defeated Punishment Martinez to win the ROH Television Championship

As noted, Martinez finished up with ROH last night and will be heading to WWE/NXT.

– Shane Taylor defeated Eli Isom

Taylor attacked Isom after the match, Cheeseburger tried to make the save, and Flip Gordon made the save for Isom and Cheeseburger. Gordon laid out Taylor with a chair. He asked if that’s what Bully Ray wanted and issued a challenge to Bully.

Bully said he wouldn’t be facing Gordon tonight. They set up a match where Silas Young will face someone of Gordon’s choosing at the 2300 Arena in Philadelphia. If Young wins, Bully can do whatever he wants to Gordon. If the person Gordon chooses wins, Gordon can do whatever he wants to Bully.

– ROH World Champion Jay Lethal & Jonathan Gresham defeated Jushin Thunder Liger & KUSHIDA

– NWA Worlds Heavyweight Champion Cody Rhodes defeated Willie Mack to retain his title

Cody was making his first defense of the NWA title since defeating Aldis at All In.

During the show-closing promo, Cody teased All In II while the crowd was chanting “All In.”

WrestleMania Friday News & Notes

– The Associated Press published a story hyping WrestleMania trying to upstage the Final Four in Texas. WM32, post-Mania Raw, and surrounding events takes place in Dallas this weekend, while the NCAA Final Four, Championship Game, and surrounding events take place in Houston. Both are competing to be the biggest spectacle of the weekend in Texas. The AP noted that WM32 wants to draw 100,000 fans to AT&T Stadium in Arlington to break their WM3 record.

– Brock Lesnar talked to the AP about his latest high-profile WrestleMania match and adding a few more dates to his schedule since last year. “Vince (McMahon) got his checkbook out and he’s writing more checks. But, I have a limit and we’re at that limit right now,” Lesnar said.

“There could be five people in the stands or 100,000 people, I don’t treat it any differently. I approach the competition the same. That’s just my mentality. I don’t get caught up in the business. I show up, I do my job, I collect my check and I go home.”

– Paul Heyman talked to CBS Sports about the challenge of trying to do the “Paul Heyman Guys” faction when Brock Lesnar is not on TV.

“There is no simple answer to this question. Reason why is there are both positives and negatives to it. Yes, I can expand the fact that I advocate for more than just Brock Lesnar. Putting my voice behind another talent – and the credibility that Brock Lesnar’s advocate would be the voice of someone else – instantly puts that person in the spotlight,” Heyman said. “The downside of it is Brock Lesnar is such a unique person, a unique character, a unique individual in this industry that placing me with someone else only begs the question, ‘Where is Brock Lesnar?’”

– Sting talked to Fox Sports ahead of his WWE Hall of Fame induction. Sting said he’s not ruling out wrestling again. “I feel great. I’m in the gym, I’m still training as I always was,” Sting said. He also relayed his injury advice to Seth Rollins, who was his (last?) opponent at Night of Champions in September in Houston.

“While you’re going through [rehab], it can seem like an eternity, and like [it’s] impossible –  but the truth of the matter is, by the time you look at it – it’s easy for me to say now after 30 years – it’s a little tiny blip on the radar screen. And he’ll come out of it, so I’ve just tried to encourage him like that,” Sting said.

– Hulk Hogan chimed in on Twitter about missing WrestleMania after being cut from the company in July 2015. “Thinking about it,it really seems weird not being at @WWE WrestleMania, really weird, but I will be there in spirit, go Shane!!!!! only love HH,” Hogan tweeted.

– WWE threw people off by releasing an NXT Takeover email blast on Friday morning advertising NXT Takeover for 9:00 p.m. EST on WWE Network. Everything on WWE’s website, including the page linked in email blast, has the pre-show at 9:30 p.m. EST before the main show starting at 10:00 (9:00 local time in Dallas).

F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: Recapping WWE Super Show-Down

Going into Super Show-Down in Melbourne, Australia on Saturday, it wasn’t entirely clear whether it would be more of a major stadium show or a glorified live event. There were elements of both on display at the Melbourne Cricket Ground. Without even factoring in entrances or the post-match angle, Triple H vs. The Undertaker was nearly 30 minutes long. It was obvious that they were attempting to deliver on the epic “last-time ever” main event that had been promised.

WWE Raw ratings up six percent this week

July 11, 2020 | News | No Comments

A combination of the lack of baseball competition and the shocking news of Roman Reigns’ leukemia diagnosis led to Raw being up six percent last night and averaging 2.54 million viewers.

With no more baseball competition, the ratings should increase slightly from the numbers of the past month, not including last night which is likely above what shows will be doing because of the Reigns announcement.

The NFL game with the Atlanta Falcons vs. New York Giants did 10.33 million viewers as the leading competition.

CW’s Arrow, which featured Cody Rhodes in his role as a drug dealer in prison, did 1.18 million viewers head-to-head with the first hour of Raw.

WWE’s Road to Evolution special, which aired directly after Raw, did 1.11 million viewers, keeping 46 percent of the audience that watched the third hour of Raw.

Raw was 10th for the night on cable, trailing only NFL-related and news-related programming.

Women stuck with the third hour at a higher percentage than men, which is different from the usual pattern, and likely related to more interest in any follow-up on Reigns.

However, in the 18-49 demo, 41.5 percent of women stayed for the Evolution special, while 42.3 percent of men 18-49 stayed for the special.

The three hours were:

8 p.m. 2.61 million viewers
9 p.m. 2.62 million viewers
10 p.m. 2.41 million viewers

4/26 REPORT: The official cause of death for Chyna (Joanie Laurer) might take months to determine, reports the Los Angeles Times.

The L.A. County Coroner’s office has posted an official record of Laurer’s case. However, they are deferring the cause of death until completing toxicology tests as part of an additional investigation.

The issue is that L.A. County has a backlog of investigations into cause of deaths. The L.A. Daily News reported in March that presiding coroner Dr. Mark Fajardo was resigning effective April 15. Fajardo said he was leaving because his department was in turmoil because of funding cuts. The supervising board claimed ongoing mismanagement and job turnover.

Regardless, the Daily News reported in March that there were 180 bodies waiting to be processed at the morgue and it takes six months for toxicology reports to be completed.

It points to why an official cause for Laurer was delayed until an investigation can be completed later this year.

4/30 UPDATE: Another reason for a delay in Joanie Laurer’s cause of death is Laurer’s practice of mixing prescription drugs in multiple bottles.

TMZ reports that detectives found “several full prescription pill bottles” containing different medication near Laurer’s body when she was discovered. She also mixed vitamins with her pills.

This will require a full toxicology report to determine what was in her system at the time of her death. The initial belief is a combination of Ambien, Valium, and other items led to an accidental overdose. However, an official cause will need to be determined from the toxicology report.

Additional notes by Bryan Rose

Cody Runnels looks to be out of action for six weeks shortly after the first of the year with his torn meniscus.

Runnels got his MRI results on Friday and they revealed two tears, one vertical and one horizontal, on the medial meniscus.

He is going to be rehabbing it through 12/14, when he will wrestle Jay Lethal on the ROH Final Battle show.  He will also wrestle on the Tokyo Dome show on 1/4 in a match that has yet to be announced.  He is planning surgery after the Tokyo Dome show.

Runnels injured his knee in what would be considered a freak accident. He was pivoting around, teasing throwing a t-shirt to the crowd during the ROH Global Wars tour last weekend when he heard his knee pop. He was forced out of his 11/11 IWGP United States title match against Beretta as a result.

He has said he will be at all of his advertised bookings including a tour of Australia later this month for World Series Wrestling, doing meet and greets, but not wrestling.
