Decades of sex abuse cover-ups within the Catholic Church are intrinsically linked to the fact that so many cardinals, bishops and priests are gay, the author of a new book on homosexuality within the Vatican said on Wednesday.

Bishops are so terrified of being outed as gay that they have been resistant to reporting priests accused of raping and molesting children, said Frédéric Martel, the author of In the Closet of the Vatican.

The claims were made as victims of clerical sex abuse demanded a policy of zero tolerance from the Vatican and Pope Francis likened critics of the Church to “the devil”.

The book, which alleges that a majority of Catholic clergy are homosexual, will be published in several languages in 20 countries on Thursday.

It coincides with Pope Francis opening an unprecedented, four-day conference at the Vatican on how to combat the scourge of sex abuse.

“Abuses are protected by this culture of secrecy. The two things are intrinsically linked,” Mr Martel, a journalist and sociologist, said during a presentation of the book in Rome.

“Bishops may not be abusers themselves. But they protect priests because they are terrified that if there’s a scandal or an investigation or a trial, then their own homosexuality may be revealed.”

There had been thousands of cases around the world of bishops protecting priests who molested children, he said.

While many gay priests are sexually active, many others are in denial. “They are repressed, they live a life of hypocrisy and schizophrenia – a double life,” said Mr Martel.

“Everyone is protecting his own little secret. It’s not one big closet – it’s lots of individuals in lots of little closets.”

He quotes a priest who estimates that 80% of Vatican clergy are gay – although Mr Martel said he has no way of verifying that figure.

The book is the product of four years of research in which the author interviewed 41 cardinals, 50 bishops, 45 Vatican ambassadors and 11 Swiss Guards, nine of them retired but three of whom are still serving in the Pope’s personal protection corps.

One of the leading figures in this hidden world was Alfonso Lopez Trujillo, a Colombian cardinal, who in public was stridently anti-gay and pro-family but in private slept with male prostitutes, according to the book.

Once head of the Pontifical Council for the Family, he died in 2008. “The more homophobic they are, the more likely they are to be gay. That’s the number one rule of the Vatican,” said the author.

He also claims that Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI, while not actively gay, is a “repressed homophile” and homosexually inclined.

Homosexual men are “the great silent majority” in the Catholic Church. “It’s what I define as fifty shades of gay,” said Mr Martel.

Some are celibate, others are in monogamous relationships, while others are highly promiscuous.

Nearly 200 bishops, archbishops and other senior Vatican officials will discuss the themes of responsibility, accountability and transparency during a series of workshops and lectures.

But victims of clerical sex abuse say that agenda is inadequate and called for concrete reforms instead of more lofty rhetoric and vague promises.

“We’ve heard a lot of words from Pope Francis since he was elected but now is the time to do the right thing,” said Peter Isely, an American who was abused by a priest as a boy.

“We want zero tolerance. Any priest who has sexually assaulted a child should be removed from the priesthood and the same goes for bishops or cardinals who cover up for them.

“That needs to be written into the universal law of the Church. It needs to be an infallible doctrine – and Pope Francis can order it with the stroke of a pen,” said Mr Isely, from the survivors’ group Ending Clergy Abuse. “What’s the hold-up? Why doesn’t he do this?”

Several survivors met with the organising committee of the Vatican summit on Wednesday, including cardinals from the US and India.

Phil Saviano, whose story of abuse by a priest was portrayed in the Oscar-winning film Spotlight, urged the Vatican to release the names of predatory priests so that children can be protected from them.

Juan Carlos Cruz, a Chilean victim of abuse, said: “The culture of cover-up needs to end."

The Pope did not meet the victims. Instead, he likened critics of the Church to the devil.

People who spend their lives accusing the Church of wrongdoing are “the friends, cousins and relatives of the devil,” he said during an audience at the Vatican.

WWE star Kane (Glenn Jacobs) says he is considering running for mayor of a town in Tennessee in two years.

Jacobs talked to WBIR-TV about his political ambitions potentially running for the Knox County mayoral seat in 2018.

Jacobs said he will make a final decision after the current U.S. presidential election to evaluate the political landscape.

“Yes, I’ve talked about it with some folks but there’s nothing too solid yet,” Jacobs told WBIR 10 News. “I think the most important thing is I care very deeply about this community, like a lot of people do. And that’s the only reason I would consider getting into any sort of government because I do care very deeply. And I think it’s incumbent upon people who care about the communities to try to make a difference.”

Jacobs also talked about why he wants to represent his local community by running for political office.

“I could live anywhere, but the reason I live in Knoxville is that I love it here – I love East Tennessee,” he said. “I love the people. I think they have great values and I think they have common sense. And for me, the political philosophy should reflect that – to keep Knox County a great place to live and a great place to raise a family.”

MLW will be presenting its first-ever live television special in December.

It was announced today that “MLW Fusion Live” will air on beIN Sports at 8 p.m. Eastern time on Friday, December 14. The show is taking place at the Scottish Rite Temple in Miami, Florida as part of MLW’s night of tapings. The venue is also hosting MLW tapings on December 13.

For the live Fusion episode, MLW is promoting a double main event of Rush vs. Rich Swann and a five-way ladder match with Middleweight Champion MJF (Maxwell Jacob Friedman) defending against Andrew Everett, Dezmond Xavier, Kotto Brazil, and Jason Cade. If MJF isn’t cleared to compete in time due to his fractured elbow, the title will be vacated and it will be a four-way match to decide the new champion.

Dragon Lee vs. DJZ and appearances by Low Ki, “Filthy” Tom Lawlor, Salina de la Renta, the Hart Foundation (Teddy Hart, Davey Boy Smith Jr. & Brian Pillman Jr.), Tommy Dreamer, and more are also advertised for the special.

“There is an energy and sense of expectation to live TV, and with only one or two other companies on live, it puts us in rarified air,” MLW’s Court Bauer told Sports Illustrated. “We have now exceeded every milestone we had mapped out in our business plan within our first 13 months of operation. Once again, we now find ourselves in unchartered territory, but it’s very exciting.”

Bauer also noted that there are more live specials in place for 2019.

Michael Cohen, in explosive testimony to Congress  on Wednesday,  produced a $35,000 cheque and said it showed that, while in office, Donald Trump personally reimbursed him for paying off porn star Stormy Daniels in the days before the 2016 election.

The president’s former "fixer" has already pleaded guilty to campaign finance violations over hush payments to Ms Daniels, and it raised the possibility that Mr Trump had taken part in a criminal enterprise while president.

In explosive testimony to Congress, Cohen said: "The president of the United States thus wrote a personal cheque for the payment of hush money as part of a criminal scheme to violate campaign finance laws."

The cheque, dated Aug 1, 2017, was "pursuant to the cover-up, which was the basis of my guilty plea," he said. He received a total of 11 cheques from Mr Trump over a year after making a $130,000 payment to Ms Daniels, Cohen said.

Cohen also claimed Mr Trump knew in advance that Wikileaks was going to release emails hacked from the Democratic Party during the 2016 election.

Cohen further stated that Mr Trump instructed him to lie to Melania Trump about the alleged affair with Ms Daniels.

He said: "Mr Trump asked me to pay off an adult film star, with whom he had an affair and to lie to his wife about it, which I did.

Cohen broke with the president last year saying his first loyalty was to his "family and country"Credit:
AP

"Lying to the First Lady is one of my biggest regrets. She is a kind, good person. I respect her greatly and she did not deserve that."

He also claimed the president implicitly instructed him to lie to Congress over a plan to build a Trump Tower in Moscow, and suggested that Mr Trump had advance knowledge of a controversial meeting between his son, Donald Jr., and a Russian lawyer at Trump Tower in New York during the campaign.

Cohen, who once said he would "take a bullet" for Mr Trump went on to deliver a character assassination of his former boss, saying: "I know what Mr. Trump is. He is a racist. He is a conman. He is a cheat."

He called Mr Trump a "liar" who was "fundamentally disloyal," didn’t care about the American people, and had campaigned on a "platform of hate and intolerance".

Cohen added: "Donald Trump is a man who ran for office to make his brand great, not to make our country great. He had no desire or intention to lead this nation, only to market himself.

Cohen voluntarily agreed to a request to appear before the Democrat-controlled House oversight committee.

The committee is investigating issues including the president’s compliance with campaign finance laws, and his business practices.

The president, tweeting from Vietnam, accused Cohen of "lying in order to reduce his prison time" and Republicans on the House oversight committee furiously accused him of "trashing" the president because he didn’t get a job in the White House.

Cohen told them how he had been in Mr Trump’s office in July 2016 when Roger Stone, a self-described "dirty trickster", called the then Republican presidential nominee.

Mr Trump put the conversation on speakerphone. Mr Stone told Mr Trump he had been speaking with Wikileaks founder Julian Assange, and that there would be, within days, a release of emails damaging to Hillary Clinton. According to Cohen, Mr Trump replied: "Wouldn’t that be great."

Mr Trump has previously denied knowing in advance about the Wikileaks release.

Cohen said he did not have "specific" evidence that Mr Trump "colluded" with Russia. Robert Mueller, the special counsel, is investigating whether there was collusion.

He also detailed how negotiations for a Trump Tower in Moscow continued well after Mr Trump was the Republican nominee

Mr Trump then implied to him that he should lied to Congress about it, Cohen alleged. "He speaks in code. I know the code," Cohen said.

He said Mr Trump himself publicly lied during the election when he said he had no business interests in Russia.

"He lied about it because he never expected to win the election. He also lied about it because he stood to make hundreds of millions of dollars," Cohen said.

Donald Trump Jr, rejected the accusations. He said: "Cohen just wants to be famous. He always wanted his own TV show."

WWE Raw ratings hit another record low

July 11, 2020 | News | No Comments

Raw dropped another four percent off of last week’s modern-era record low, with just a 2.19 million viewer average last night.

The audience started off ahead of last week, but it fell throughout the show, with both the lowest second hour in modern history, and the third hour, falling from that, was the lowest hour in modern history. The first hour was among the lowest first hours as well.

The big competition was the Minnesota Vikings vs. Seattle Seahawks NFL game that did 11.39 million viewers.

Raw was tenth for the night on cable, trailing only NFL related programming on ESPN and news programming.

The audience under 50 didn’t tune out at the same levels as usual, and teenage boys grew throughout the show. Women declined, but the big decline was over 50 viewers which fell 18 percent from hour one to hour three.

The three hours were:

8 p.m. 2.35 million viewers
9 p.m. 2.19 million viewers
10 p.m. 2.05 million viewers

The grandmothers of two orphaned children of French jihadists held in camps in Syria are suing the French state for failing to bring them back to France, their lawyer said Tuesday.

The children, a girl aged five and a two-year-old boy, are in the care of a Kurdish militia at the Roj camp in Al Hasakah, north-eastern Syria, according to the lawyer, Samia Maktouf.

“They are in real danger without more international military protection,” said Ms Maktouf, who has represented the families of people killed in terror attacks in France including the 2015 Bataclan atrocity.

“These children, born under terror, should not undergo further suffering. France has a duty to protect them.”

The boy’s mother was aged only 14 when she ran away from her home in France and went to the then Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Isil) stronghold of Raqqa, in Syria, in 2014.

Radicalised online, she died last year during the bombing of Raqqa by US-led coalition forces. The child’s father is described as a European convert to Islam, said to have died after being detained in Iraq.

Returning jihadis: What other countries do

Ms Maktouf said she will argue in court that France has a duty of care towards the two orphans because it is a signatory to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. No date has been set for a court hearing so far.

The children were reportedly born in Syria but are eligible for French citizenship.

Ms Maktouf said they could be in danger from further fighting in Syria or could fall back into the hands of Isil and suffer further indoctrination.

Plans to repatriate French jihadists and their children have raised huge public opposition in France. An opinion poll last week suggested that 82 per cent of French people think they should be left in camps and tried in Iraq.

France has been hit by a wave of terror attacks and the French now appear more concerned about security than the rights of jihadists.

Nicole Belloubet, the French justice minister, has said that if they are sentenced to death, France will put pressure on the Iraqi authorities to jail them instead.

A new Intercontinental champion was crowned during tonight’s Raw.

Bobby Lashley defeated Seth Rollins and champion Dean Ambrose in a triple threat match to win the title for the first time. Ambrose had held the title for less than a month, 29 days, defeating Seth Rollins at TLC back on December 16.

The finish came when Rush interfered in the match, sending Rollins off the top rope as Lashley and Ambrose were in the ring. Lashley then speared Ambrose to win the title.

Both Lashley and Ambrose have been feuding with Seth Rollins for the last several months. After losing the title at TLC, Rollins wanted another match with Ambrose for the title. He ended up getting one last week, but it was stopped by Lashley, who he brawled with earlier in the show. Lashley laid him out and let Ambrose cover him for the win, which led to tonight’s triple threat match.

With their enormous shaggy torsos and long curved tusks, the imposing creatures last walked on earth during the Ice Age.

Fast forward thousands of years and the woolly mammoth may once again make an appearance on this planet – after Japanese scientists claim to have taken a “significant step” towards bringing the long-extinct animals back to life.

Researchers extracted bone marrow and muscle tissue from the remains of a mammoth named Yuka, who has lain frozen in Siberian permafrost for more than 28,000 years.

As a first step, the team, from Kindai University in Osaka, confirmed the authenticity of Yuka’s extracted tissue samples using whole-genome sequencing techniques.

Scientists then injected cell nuclei from the extinct woolly mammoth’s muscle tissue into mouse cell eggs – resulting in signs of biological activities, according to the study, published by Nature’s on-line journal Scientific Reports.

The biological activity detected in the mouse cell eggs included a type of structural formation that reportedly precedes cell division.

Kei Miyamoto, one of the authors, told the Nikkei that the findings marked a “significant step towards bringing mammoths back from the dead”.

Highlighting that they “still have a long way to go” before the species returns to existence, he added: “We want to move our study forward to the stage of cell division.”

Woolly mammoths last roamed the planet during the last Ice Age, before widely dying out in the face of rising temperatures, evolving food supplies and human hunting.

The Japanese team is also reportedly collaborating with Russian scientists who are attempting to clone the extinct woolly mammoth using a technique known as somatic cell nuclear transfer.

“Our work provides a platform to evaluate the biological activities of nuclei in extinct animal species,” the report read. “Ancient species carry invaluable information about the genetic basis of adaptive evolution and factors related to extinction.”

Owens defeated Honma with the package piledriver.

– Tomohiro Ishii, Toru Yano and Satoshi Kojima defeated Minoru Suzuki, Taichi and Davey Boy Smith Jr.

Yano pinned Smith after countering the bulldog bomb with a bridging cover.

– EVIL and Shingo Takagi defeated Zack Sabre Jr. and Taka Michinoku

Takagi pinned Michinoku after the pumping bomber.

– Kota Ibushi, Juice Robinson and Hirooki Goto defeated Tetsuya Naito, SANADA and BUSHI

Makabe defeated Nakanishi with the king kong knee drop.

New Japan Cup matches:
Lance Archer defeated Henare

A good little match. Henare did a great job playing the underdog babyface and Archer was great as the dangerous, dominant heel. Perfect dynamic to have for this kind of match and both men played their roles well.

Henare got some offense early by powerbombing Archer as he was posing on the top rope. Archer quickly swung momentum back in his favor by taking Henare and flinging him into the barricade.

After a rope walk by Archer, Henare blasts him with a clothesline. He follows up with a big vertical suplex. Archer comes back with a chokeslam and goes for a blackout, but Henare escapes. Archer hits a clothesline, takes him to the top rope and hits blackout for the win.

Mikey Nicholls defeated Hikuleo

This wasn’t good. Hikuleo was green and you could really see that whenever he was on offense or had to sell. Not the best showcase for Nicholls, who looked okay here but there was just no life for this. Crowd was completely dead save for the last couple of minutes.

Hikuleo sent Nicholls out to the floor early which allowed Jado, who seconded Hikuleo, to attack with the kendo stick. Hikuleo hits a sidewalk slam but Nicholls dodges a charge, hits a clothesline and takes out Jado. After another clothesline, he lands a brainbuster.

Nicholls goes for a moonsault but Hikuleo rolls out of the way, boots him in the stomach and hits a legdrop. Jado strikes Nicholls with a kendo stick shot as Hikuleo goes for his tree slam finish, but Nicholls escapes, somehow (the camera completely missed it).

Nicholls hits a death valley driver and a seated clothesline, then finishes with the Mikey bomb (blue thunder bomb).

Will Ospreay defeated Bad Luck Fale

This was alright. Ospreay looked great, Fale was…there. I think this was similar to the Archer/Henare match, but with a better small guy and a not as good big guy. Crowd was into it, though.

Ospreay went on the attack immediately, but much like the last match Jado got involved early and attacked Ospreay with the kendo stick. Back in the ring, Fale works on his back and keeps grinding on him until Ospreay hits back with the springboard enziguri.

Ospreay continues to build, hitting a running corner dropkick. Fale tried for the grenade, but Ospreay hit another enziguri. Ospreay hits the ropes but eats a big shoulder block and splashes in the corner and ground from Fale. He went for the grenade again, but Ospreay escapes and goes for the oscutter but Fale drags in the referee, causing a ref bump.

That allows Jado to get involved as he strikes Jado with a kendo stick shot. He enters the ring to do another kendo stick shot, but Ospreay takes it and whips both Jado and Fale with it. He follows that with the Robison Special, but Fale blocks hit, shoves Ospreay into the ropes and hits the spear.

Fale hits the grenade, but Ospreay kicks out in a great near fall. He then tries for the Bad Luck Fall, but Ospreay counters with a hurricanrana and tries to hook Fale’s leg, but he can’t. The ref counts three anyway as that’s the finish.

Kazuchika Okada defeated Michael Elgin

This was an excellent match, one of the better bouts New Japan has put on post-WrestleKingdom. The crowd was hot throughout, and had the kind of epic match feel that New Japan is known for.

The theme of the night seems to be getting the heat on the outside, as Elgin got that early after a russian leg sweep into the side of the ring after a chop exchange. Okada gains control for a bit, but Elgin counters back with a powerslam.

Okada walks right into a belly to belly overhead suplex and a northern lights bridge as Elgin starts to build momentum. Okada knocks him down with an elbow, then goes to the top and hits another, but Elgin floats over and locks in a crossface.

Okada escapes as he tries to withstands brutal strikes from Elgin, his chest becoming purple with welts. Okada starts to build momentum, hitting the elbow and going for the rainmaker but Elgin strikes with elbows. Elgin hits two German suplexes then a dragon suplex. Elgin follows that with a tiger bomb, but Okada kicks out.

The two continue with their back and forth, but Elgin strikes down Okada with a superkick. Elgin takes him to the top rope and goes for a superplex, but Okada counters with a sunset flip bomb…only for Okada to escape and attack, laying him out with a buckle bomb and the Elgin bomb. Okada goes for the rainmaker, but Elgin blasts him with a rainmaker instead.

Elgin goes for the burning hammer but Okada escapes and eventually manages a dropkick. He goes for the rainmaker, but Elgin escapes and takes him down for the crossface. Okada struggles, but manages to get his foot on the bottom rope. Elgin wasn’t happy about that. He hits the buckle bomb, but the two wind up exchanging and countering holds until Elgin hits a backfist. Elgin goes for a forearm smash but Okada counters with a tombstone, then the rainmaker, and that’s it.

That makes the second round matches Kazuchika Okada vs. Mikey Nicholls and Will Ospreay vs. Lance Archer.
