New Japan Pro Wrestling held a press conference Monday afternoon at the NJPW office in Tokyo to recognize Kenny Omega as the 2016 G1 Climax winner.

The top news from the media gathering was Omega throwing out a challenge to YOSHI-HASHI to defend his right to challenge for the IWGP World Title at the Tokyo Dome on January 4.

Omega said he was embarrassed by YOSHI beating him in his first match of the G1 Climax tournament back on July 22.

Omega, who was in heel mode throughout, said YOSHI won’t sell one ticket to the Tokyo Dome if he’s in the main event, so it’s more about his agenda to wash away a bad loss than good business for New Japan.

Omega later talked up YOSHI “showing heart” throughout the G1 tournament and wanting to win, not just be there, but YOSHI doesn’t have enough talent to beat him. Omega labeled it “Talent vs. Heart.” No date was given for when Omega will put his G1 Climax victory prize on the line against YOSHI.

Also during the conference, Omega was asked about using Prince Devitt/Finn Balor’s Bloody Sunday and A.J. Styles’s Styles Clash finishers before hitting his own finisher against Hirooki Goto to win the G1 tournament.

Omega said he “got desperate” and needed a cool move and an effective move to set up for his finisher. He also linked it back to the previous Bullet Club leaders.

Omega said he is now the Bullet Club boss and the Club will thrive once again now that he won the G1 tournament. Omega said he’s seen too many L.I.J. t-shirts for Naito’s faction in the crowd, and he wants to see more Bullet Club, Elite, and Kenny Omega t-shirts going forward.

Omega said he doesn’t care if the fans cheer him, but he knows that if they do cheer him, even as bad of a man as he is, then he knows they have recognized his talent.

Omega made a big deal about his “legend” and wanting to be the best gaijin foreigner to ever wrestle in New Japan. Omega said he earned the right to be in the main event of the Tokyo Dome Show, and wasn’t handed it. He called himself the “Shawn Michaels of New Japan.”

Omega said he has a two-part plan to build his legend – win the G1 Climax tournament, make the Tokyo Dome, and win the IWGP World Title match at the Tokyo Dome.

The other item of note was Omega continuing to diss Kota Ibushi, his former tag partner. When asked about using the Clash, Bloody Sunday, and trying the Golden Star Press, Omega cut off the question, saying he will not talk about “that other person,” which was similar to his post-G1 Climax interview on Sunday.

Despite the Superstar Shake-up taking place two weeks ago, another team has switched from SmackDown to Raw.

Karl Anderson and Luke Gallows appeared on Raw tonight, losing to the Usos in tag team action. The commentators noted that both teams had moved from SmackDown to Raw. While it was made clear the Usos had jumped to Raw two weeks ago, no mention of Anderson and Gallows moving was made until tonight.

The Shake-up has been racked with a number of surprise switches and movements over the last two weeks, mostly to balance out the rosters due to injuries and relationships. Raw last week had Cesaro and Samoa Joe move to Raw while Andrade, Aleister Black, Jinder Mahal, The Singh Brothers and Zelina Vega were moved to SmackDown.

Anderson and Gallows were traded to SmackDown as part of the 2018 Superstar Shake-Up, but were not in any major long term programs and mostly were kept off television.

Taven was on commentary for this. Lethal was distracted by Kenny King, which led to him being hit with the Tour of the Islands by Cobb for the finish.

Finn Balor’s Rollercoaster Week

Sunday: Win the Universal Title at Summerslam to become the first-ever Universal champion.
Monday Morning: Find out the nagging shoulder injury is a lot worse than believed.
Monday Night: Relinquish the Universal Title as part of an injury angle write-off
Tuesday Morning: Report to Alabama for surgery.
Tuesday: Find out the injury is even worse than initially believed.
Wednesday Morning: Begin the rehab process that will take “at least six months.”
Next: Report back to Orlando, Florida to begin extensive physical therapy trying to return to WWE around the Royal Rumble or WrestleMania in 2017.

WWE released a video update from Balor beginning his rehab process and talking dejectedly about the big international tours and PPVs that he will be missing over the next six months.

“It’s been a long day,” Balor summed up after his first day of rehab. “It was agony. Any hopes of being back in four months are crushed. It’s going to be at least six months of rehabilitation. don’t really know how I’m going to cope with being out of the ring for that long.”

“I don’t really know how I’m going to cope with being out of the ring for that long,” Balor added. “My friends tell me the first month is the hardest, then you’ll kind of slip into the routine and enjoy the time off. Right now, I’m thinking about the amount of work I’m going to miss.”

Overall, Balor said it’s been a “startling realization” that it’s a very serious shoulder injury and it’s going to be a “really tough first couple of months and long road back.”

For the third time in four weeks, SmackDown’s Monday night house show won’t be taking place as scheduled.

WWE announced today that SmackDown’s house show that was supposed to take place at the Tony’s Pizza Event Center in Salina, Kansas on Monday (May 27) has been rescheduled to Saturday, October 26. Tickets that were purchased for Monday will be honored on that October 26 date, and WWE noted that fans who cannot attend should go to their point of purchase for refunds.

Tony’s Pizza Event Center apologized to fans for any inconvenience the change caused.

With the introduction of the Wild Card rule and episodes of Raw and SmackDown being able to feature appearances by a few wrestlers from the other brand, SmackDown’s house show that was scheduled for Corbin, Kentucky on Monday, May 6 was postponed to Thursday, October 17. SmackDown’s house show that had been set for Lowell, Massachusetts this past Monday was also canceled.

The only Monday that didn’t have a schedule change this month was during WWE’s European tour.

F4W NEWSLETTER: Figure Four Weekly: Thoughts on AEW Double or Nothing

If it wasn’t already clear, the success of All Elite Wrestling’s Double or Nothing has solidified one thing: the remainder of 2019 is going to be a great time for the professional wrestling industry and its fans.

AEW’s maiden voyage had a lot of hype to live up to. There’s always difficulty when something transforms from an idea to a fully-formed product, complete with its own issues and imperfections. And while Double or Nothing wasn’t perfect, it managed to exceed reasonable expectations.

WON NEWSLETTER: June 3, 2019 Wrestling Observer Newsletter: Double or Nothing review

A look at Double or Nothing and the debut of AEW is the lead story in this week’s issue of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

Look at how the show did on PPV, where the buys came from, and how this number compares with the other companies. Compare it with All In, look at what was both good and bad about running in Las Vegas, the problems with Starrcast and high spots of Starrcast, merch numbers, the Cody vs. Dustin match,

Look at what Jon Moxley is doing next, why he left WWE, and cover his detailed interview on Talk is Jericho about why he left WWE and his goals going forward.

Also look at WWE’s Super Showdown, including some questions that you can’t get away from asking. Also run down the show, and the issue of it being easy to say things when it’s to your benefit but another having to make decisions that back up your proclaimed beliefs.

Examine this year’s Best of the Super Juniors tournament and where New Japan goes next.

Read about new legislation that could greatly affect how WWE and AEW wrestlers are treated, preview Takeover Bridgeport, updated PPV cards, update on Ric Flair, update on Sasha Banks, Lineups for big shows and WWE looking at making more purchases.

Have a look at the Hall of Fame career of Rashad Evans, from his start in winning The Ultimate Fighter, to winning the light heavyweight title, to his grudge matches with Jon Jones and Rampage Jackson, and famous bouts with the likes of Lyoto Machida and Chuck Liddell.

Almost assuredly due to the monumental viewership expected for tonight’s President debate between Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump, WWE has just issued a press release to PWTorch noting that the first first time ever, the WWE World Title match will open up tonight’s No Mercy. So A.J. Styles vs. John Cena vs. Dean Ambrose will kick off the main part of the PPV tonight.

Keller’s Analysis: This is a smart move in the WWE Network era where people are paying a flat monthly fee and aren’t spending $55, give or take, for all three hours of the event, to give the most anticipated match first given tonight’s expected debate viewership. I am curious which match they main event with, though. Will it be the Intercontinental Title, which is a close race in our poll for the most anticipated match of the night, along with the Triple Threat title match. This is also an opportunity for Randy Orton to be positioned as a main event babyface, or Becky Lynch’s Women’s Championship to close out the show, although I’m not sure Alexa Bliss is at the level of a PPV main event challenger at this point. There’s also a chance the booking of the finish of the Triple Threat match will lead to something later in the show.

Without Undertaker, Smackdown’s ratings settled back to barely above average last night, despite a ladder match between A.J. Styles and James Ellsworth for a World Hvt. Title shot and coming just two days after a newsworthy Survivor Series. The Nov. 22 episode drew a 1.72 rating, down from last week’s 1.95.

The rolling ten week average for Smackdown coming into this week was 1.67, so it’s only a notch above the recent average. It is a big rebound from the 1.38 rating it drew Election Night two weeks ago and ties the highest rating of the previous nine weeks.

Keller’s Analysis: The surge in the Raw rating didn’t directly lead to an above-average rating for Smackdown, so Goldberg’s appearance helped Raw pop a rating, but its effect on Smackdown was negligible, other than the fact that Smackdown was above average and near the higher levels its hit in recent months, sans last week’s show with Undertaker. What the ratings the last two shows is WWE is able to communicate to lapsed or infrequent viewers when a big star is appearing, and those fans tune in. But they don’t stick around once the special attraction isn’t around.
