NAPA VALLEY, CA — Many North Bay residents have vivid, even traumatic memories of the October 2017 firestorm that claimed 44 lives. The death toll could have been double that if not for Napa-based California Highway Patrol flight officer Whitney Lowe, a 37-year-old married father of five who lives in Vacaville, his co-worker, CHP pilot Pete Gavitte, and their colleagues based out of Redding.

Some 42 lives were saved from the Atlas Fire because of courageous actions taken by CHP air operations helicopter crew members the evening of Oct. 8, 2017 and early Oct. 9, 2017.

In a recent sit-down interview with Patch at CHP’s hangar at the Napa County Airport, Lowe replayed the moments that led him and Gavitte to respond that night to the Atlas Peak area of Napa Valley wine country.

They were flying over the Oakland area searching for a missing hiker and their colleague, CHP airplane pilot Jan Sears, was flying over Vallejo in response to a burglary in progress.

Sears “looked out the window and saw what he described as a flicker up in the hills above Napa when at night, that should all be dark,” Lowe said.

A few minutes, maybe even seconds, later, Sears called again. This time he said it appeared there was a “rapidly developing” fire on Atlas Peak — a ridge that not unlike most of Napa County, is dotted with vineyards, wineries and residences.

“We got the call as we were heading back to the airport,” Lowe said. “We never landed.”

Instead, they headed toward a fiery inferno with “no mission, no directive, no idea, really, what the night was going to evolve into.”

From far away, Lowe said, it looked like a bomb had gone off in the hill.

“The flames were very very large; under night-vision goggles it looked like a nuclear bomb had gone off,” he said.

They went “Paul Revere-style” on the loudspeaker, using their siren to wake people up, all up and down Atlas Peak Road.

They shone their night sun — a spotlight on the belly of the helicopter — into the windows of residences in a senior community to try and wake up the residents, many of whom were already asleep.

That was at about 10:30 p.m., he recalled, and the fire was steadily creeping up the hill.

He remembers thinking of the vineyard workers at the top of the hill who were engrossed in harvesting; they may not even be aware of the fire, he thought.

“Then we started hearing people were entrapped in their homes and they couldn’t get out, and fire resources couldn’t respond because roads were blocked by downed trees,” Lowe said.
“Both Atlas Peak and Soda Canyon roads were blocked several different times in several different locations.”

That is when he and Gavitte knew what they needed to do.

“What started our rescue efforts was listening to the radio and hearing that there is nobody coming for these people, and then seeing the different blockades in the road, from downed trees to downed wires, and lines of cars that were stopped and entrapped,” Lowe said.

“We were looking from above; having the perfect view of the fire headed their direction … and thinking ‘They have no idea,'” he said.

Once they found somewhere suitable to land, Lowe recalls jumping out of the helicopter and running a quarter-mile down to a line of cars full of people trapped by fire.

“I started telling the people in cars, ‘There is a huge fire and it’s coming this direction, you guys are trapped in three different places between here and safety at the bottom of the hill. If you guys want, come up to the helicopter and we’ll start evacuating you guys.’ And so that is what we did.”

In groups of one to four, multiple families were flown to safety at Monticello Road and Atlas Peak Road. When fire encroached that area, the families were evacuated to Queen of the Valley Medical Center in Napa.

“That is what we did for the next 8-1/2 hours,” Lowe said. “We never shut the helicopter off, just refueled.”

The skies were not friendly that night, he recalled.

“The visibility and the winds that night —we heard it topped off at 84 mph to 86 mph — and different variables worked against us,” Lowe said. “Being able to use night-vision goggles was a huge help to see through the smoke and see where we needed to go.”

About halfway through the night, they got help from a fellow CHP helicopter crew based in Redding.

“They heard on the radio what we were doing and how it was evolving,” Lowe said. “They topped off with fuel and headed this direction.”

From about 3 a.m. on, the two crews did “Round-Robin” rescues, enabling them to tag-team the task.

“Throughout the night we were able to rescue 26 people, and they [the Redding crew] were able to rescue another 16 people,” Lowe said.

He recalls flying up to a wall of fire on several different occasions as they tried to find suitable places to land the helicopter.

“We had three different landing zones throughout the night; all three had burned over,” Lowe said. “Some of the people we rescued told us they were told to go out into the middle of a vineyard and lay down and let the fire burn over them. That was their plan at the time.”

All told, six people died in the Atlas Fire. They were among 44 people who died in the fires that raged through Sonoma, Napa and surrounding Northern California communities starting the night of Oct. 8, 2017.

The life-saving actions of the CHP crews did not go unnoticed. Lowe and Gavitte — along with their Redding colleagues, Officer Chad Millward and Officer Phil Agdeppa — have received five medals of valor, including from the California governor’s office. The pair also has been honored by California State Firefighters Association and California Peace Officers Association.

ATLANTA, GA — The main suspect in the Atlanta Child Murders, Wayne Williams, has been denied parole by the Georgia Parole Board, Fox 5 reported. In 1982, he was convicted of killing two adults, and a judge sentenced him to serve two life terms.

Police still suspect Williams in the Atlanta murders of more than 20 children that took place between 1979 and 1981, but he’s never been charged in connection with their deaths.

In a statement, the Georgia Board of Pardons and Parole told Fox 5 that Williams was being considered for parole but that the board voted to deny it in November. A letter was sent to Williams from the board saying the request was denied due to “insufficient amount of time served to date given the nature and circumstances of your offense(s).”

“You are encouraged to continue in your rehabilitative efforts so you will be properly prepared to succeed in the event a future consideration results in your transition back into society,” wrote Rick Jacobs, director of Clemency and Parole Selection Division.

Williams’ next parole consideration will be in November 2027, which is the maximum date of eight years.

According to the news station, Williams’ denial for parole occurred after Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms announced that Atlanta police and other law enforcement agencies will re-examine evidence collected during the cases that terrorized the community during the late 1970s and early 1980s. She created the Atlanta Children’s Memorial Taskforce, whose job is to determine “an appropriate acknowledgement of the lives cut short during the Atlanta Child Murders,” Bottoms said in May.

In March, Bottoms announced that a joint investigative task force would reopen and retest some of the evidence from the Atlanta Child Murders. The task force will be composed of Atlanta police officials, Fulton County and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation. Modern technology will be used in examining the evidence surrounding the deaths of 22 of the 29 murders.

According to Dave Meltzer on a recent edition of The Wrestling Observer Radio Program, All Elite Wrestling is in no rush to sign a TV deal so it looks like we will be waiting a little longer than expected for a confirmed TV deal to be announced. Meltzer also noted that talks for a TV deal are “smooth” and nothing has fallen apart.
AEW believes that holding out will strategically benefit them, especially considering the new deal between UFC & ESPN, and the proven success of The DAZN Streaming Service. The hold up from AEW is reportedly coming from the examples of synchronization between sports promotions and streaming services, along with rights fees for sports continuing to rise. Nevertheless, Meltzer notes that decision time will be coming at a certain point, and we will know more then.
Regarding AEW’s upcoming Double Or Nothing Event, Meltzer noted that he is certain that there will be a streaming service involved so that people can watch along at home, as well as the traditional option of watching on PPV. There are reportedly several options from the people to choose from. The higher ups in AEW have the task of selling their product to different streaming companies based on the exceptional ticket sales they have seen and the potential TV deals that are on the table.
In a recent interview with Wrestling Inc.’s WINCLY Podcast, AEW Executive Vice President Cody Rhodes mentioned that a major TV deal remains an important aspect of AEW’s ongoing exposure. Rhodes expound only a bit further, claiming that their potential deal could create a “massive shift in the pro wrestling industry”.
“I can’t talk about it but I know that I was quoted as saying – not by you guys – that, ‘A TV deal was not important.’ And I think that in the context I was speaking, I was talking about how important social media and do-it-yourself brands are compared to the traditional TV median,” Rhodes explained. “But I also – let’s be serious, major TV is a huge thing, and it would be a massive shift in the pro wrestling industry. It would be a change-the-world-like move. But I can’t talk about any pending TV deals.
“A lot of the information that’s out there is very accurate about what we’re seeking to do and how frequently we’re seeking to do it,” Rhodes continued on. “But I don’t want to discourage any future partners. I can say that people have been really calculated about how we roll out announcements. We want to be proper. We can’t just stand on the podium in Jacksonville and say, ‘Hey, here’s the entire business model, here’s all of our plans, here’s x-amount of money.’ We can’t do that. I know the business of the business is very entertaining but I think if people put their trust in us like they have, we won’t let them down.”
AEW’s Double Or Nothing takes place on May 25th from The MGM Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

The war of words between RAW Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey & Becky Lynch continued this past week as “The Man” recently took to Twitter and blasted “The Baddest Woman On The Planet”. It was previously reported that WWE Officials weren’t happy with the choice of words used by Lynch & Rousey in their Twitter war.
Rousey even went as far as to say that she will go off-script and beat the living s–t out of Lynch. Rousey also did her “Ronda On The Road” YouTube Series and went on a cuss-filled rant about breaking kayfabe.
This past Friday, Lynch shared a photo of Rousey & her husband Travis Browne with the caption: “Look how tough they are. RAWWRRRRR. But I’m told to go easier on them because they’re getting upset.” Just recently, Lynch would once again take to Twitter and reply to her own message with the caption: “Ronnie is very quiet around these parts lately. Wonder why?”
Someone would then reply that it was probably the fines that were catching up with her, which Lynch said that she would pay them because she has that Funko money now.
Another user would then speculate that Ronda Rousey was busy with her goats and husband (who is banned from RAW), which Lynch replied: “If she wants to spend time with a GOAT she should invite me around for din din.”
Lynch would then share a video of herself doing a promo about Rousey. Below is the full promo:
“Talking like she’s the baddest woman on the planet. I have never seen someone so protected in all my life. Goodness gracious! She thinks she’s all anti-establishment but we got Ronda Rousey exactly where we want her. Cuz I said a long time ago that her titanium body will be left down by her weak mind. Now she thinks she’s godlike, she’s untouchable, and she’s unbeatable, but that’s where we want her because when Ronda feels so untouchable that’s when she’s put to sleep. Am I Right?
You can check out Becky Lynch’s tweets below along with the video:

Before Tommaso Ciampa was forced to vacate The NXT Title due to undergoing neck surgery earlier this month, he was initially set to defend his NXT Title against Johnny Gargano at NXT TakeOver: New York.
A Fatal 5-Way Match was then set to determine who will face Johnny Gargano at NXT TakeOver: New York for the vacant NXT Title. After winning The Fatal 5-Way Match against Matt Riddle, Ricochet, Aleister Black & NXT North American Champion The Velveteen Dream, Adam Cole is now set to take on Johnny Gargano for the vacant NXT Title in a 2-Out-Of-3 Falls Match at NXT TakeOver: New York.
On Twitter, Johnny Gargano recently reflected on when he received his rejection e-mail from WWE after a tryout in 2015 and how the fans helped get him to where he is now.

“I still have my rejection email from my WWE tryout back in 2015. I look at it from time to time to remind myself how far I’ve come and why any of this happened to begin with. I didn’t take ‘no’ for an answer. I fought for a chance. But I couldn’t do this by myself. … It didn’t matter if it was a dark match in Full Sail or my 1st TakeOver at the Barclays Center. You chanted “Johnny Wrestling.” You believed in me and they listened. We fought together to make any of this happen. We will fight to make one last dream come true in New York.”
AEW Star Chuckie T would then respond to Gargano that he also still has his rejection letter from Canyon Ceman (Senior Director Of Talent Development for WWE) and showed a photo of it.
“I hope you are well. I wanted to follow-up per our conversation at the end of your tryout. WWE does not have an opportunity for you in our developmental system. Future opportunities may be available in the form of a ‘Rhyno’ type loop/shot, as the NXT TV and touring brand evolves. Please keep me updated on your contract status, so we know if you are available for such opportunities. Thanks again for your effort and professionalism at the tryout, it was noticed and appreciated. Regards, Canyon Ceman”
Chuckie T responded with a “sad face.”
