MINNEAPOLIS – The University of Minnesota finishes day one of the Big Ten Championships in fifth place with 76.5 team points and one Big Ten finalist in heavyweight Gable Steveson. There are still nine Gophers still in contention for qualification with a chance to wrestle tomorrow.
Penn State leads the team race with 131 points while Ohio State, Nebraska, and Iowa fill in the gap between the Nittany Lions and Gophers.
Steveson, the true freshman from Apple Valley, Minnesota, extends his winning streak to 30 victories, passing Damion Hahn, Luke Becker, and Cole Konrad for 13th place on the Gophers all-time list.
After a second technical fall of the season over Christian Colucci of Rutgers, Steveson defeated preseason-No.1 Sam Stoll, a Minnesota native, in the quarterfinals. Steveson’s night finished with a semifinal decision victory over Wisconsin’s Trent Hilger.
The last Big Ten Champion for the Gophers was 133-pound Chris Dardanes in 2015 and the last heavyweight to accomplish it was Tony Nelson in 2014.
After hosting less than 10,000 fans in 2008 when the Big Ten Championships were also in Minneapolis, the university hosted over 11,000 fans each session.
Steveson was joined by 125-pound Sean Russell, 149-pound Tommy Thorn, 157-pound Steve Bleise, and 174-pound Devin Skatzka in the semifinals. The Gophers were one of only four teams to have at least five semifinalists.
Russell, the Gophers transfer at 125-pounds, began his days with two major decisions before falling to Iowa’s Spencer Lee in the semifinals for the second time this season.
Thorn outscored his first two opponents 17-6 before dropping a narrow decision to top-seeded Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers.
Bleise electrified the crowd in the quarterfinals with a victory in extra time over third-seed Ryan Deakin, who Bleise lost to in a January dual. Just moments later, Skatzka sent Williams Arena into a second frenzy when he got payback on Nebraska’s Mikey Labriola after a February loss.
In the semifinals, Bleise fell by only three points to Nebraska’s Tyler Berger while Skatzka dropped a narrow 4-2 decision to nationally top-ranked Mark Hall.

Returning two-time All-American Ethan Lizak remains alive after he went 3-1 on the day. Lizak defeated Wisconsin’s Jens Lantz for the second time to open the tournament, but he fell to 2018 All-American Nick Suriano in the quarterfinals.
Lizak bounced back with a technical fall and a decision in the consolation bracket. He will wrestle top-ranked Stevan Micic in session three.
Minnesota’s Dylan Anderson won his first match over the Fighting Illini’s Andre Lee before dropping his following two matches.
The only Gophers to lose their first bouts were 165-pound Carson Brolsma and 184-pound Brandon Krone who both advanced to the second round of consolations in the second session.
The pair both lost twice on the first day, but remained alive due to extra NCAA Tournament allocations. Krone wrestled Saturday night while Brolsma will wrestle tomorrow morning.
All ten Gophers were still in contention on either side of the bracket entering the second session.
Minnesota resumes wrestling in the Big Ten Tournament tomorrow at Noon and the finals, third place, and fifth place matches will be wrestled in the afternoon session beginning at 3pm.

Some early market ratings are available at this point for the debut of AEW Dynamite last night on TNT.
At this point there are no ratings available for NXT on the USA Network.
It’s very tricky because these are only a few specific markets and don’t include either New York or Los Angeles. But if we compare with the preview show, these ratings would indicate 1.5 million to 1.7 million viewers for the live airing and 650,000 for the taped show. I believe the actual number for the live show may be lower because these numbers are skewed by a freaky large number in Charlotte.
These are the household ratings for the show in different markets:
Live show —
Chicago: 1.0
Dallas: 0.9
Washington, DC: 0.7
Houston: 0.9
Atlanta: 1.0
Detroit: 1.4
Minneapolis: 0.8
Charlotte: 2.0
Replay show —
Chicago: 0.6
Dallas: 0.1
Washington, DC: 0.2
Houston: 0.4
Atlanta: 0.2
Detroit: 0.8
Minneapolis: 0.2
Charlotte: 0.8
For comparisons in these markets, these were the percentage differences in viewing from Tuesday’s show that did 631,000 viewers.
Chicago up 233 percent
Dallas up 200 percent
Washington, DC up 75 percent
Houston up 125 percent
Atlanta up 11 percent
Detroit up 133 percent
Minneapolis up 300 percent
Charlotte up 82 percent

PROGRESS Wrestling returned to the O2 Ritz in Manchester on Sunday with the fallout from the company’s biggest show of the year, which took place at London’s Alexandra Palace last month.
– Today’s show opened with new PROGRESS Unified World Champion Eddie Dennis cutting off ring announcer Jim Smallman’s opening routine. He purposely demonstrated his ability to control a crowd before ridiculing David Starr’s INDEPENDENT movement.
– Pretty Deadly (Sam Stoker & Lewis Howley) defeated The Young Guns (Luke Jacobs & Ethan Allen)
This was a PROGRESS Chapter debut for both teams. The crowd was very receptive for the Manchester-based Young Guns.
– PROGRESS Proteus Champion Paul Robinson defeated Travis Banks to retain his title
The stipulation chosen by the champion meant that the match could only be won by submission or knockout. Following plenty of brawling on the outside, Robinson defeated Banks by technical knockout after stomping his head into an exposed ring.
After the match, TK Cooper came out and teased that he would help his former South Pacific Power Trip stablemate Banks to his feet, but Cooper then attacked him.
– Dani Luna defeated Toni Storm
Luna got the win with a roll-up.
Following the match, Storm put Luna over by telling her that she has to beat PROGRESS Women’s World Champion Meiko Satomura. Then, Jinny made a surprise appearance and was dressed in gear reminiscent of her trainer Jimmy Havoc. She stared down Storm and seemingly reignited the two’s storied rivalry within PROGRESS.
– TK Cooper defeated Roy Johnson
This match might have ended early as Cooper took a nasty bump on the outside that cut him open. Following Cooper’s win, he was chased away by Travis Banks.

– Ilja Dragunov defeated Cara Noir
Dragunov got the win with his Torpedo Moscow running uppercut. The crowd was electric throughout for both Dragunov and new fan-favorite Cara Noir.
– PROGRESS Tag Team Champions Jordan Devlin & Scotty Davis defeated The Grizzled Young Veterans (Zack Gibson & James Drake) to retain their titles
This was Devlin and Davis’ first defense of their newly-won Tag Team titles after Davis successfully cashed in his Natural Progression Series championship opportunity at Chapter 95.
– In light of his departure from PROGRESS at the end of 2019, co-owner Jim Smallman thanked the crowd as he finished his last ever show in Manchester. It was later announced at a live recording of the Tuesday Night Jaw podcast that Smallman’s close friend and colleague Matt Richards would take over Smallman’s role as both ring announcer and in creative writing.

On “Prime Time with Sean Mooney,” Lex Luger discussed the death of Elizabeth. The following are show highlights sent to PWTorch.com by the show’s producers…
•On getting arrested the night of Liz’s death: “I was sitting out in my front yard and they told me that she didn’t make it. So I remember, when they went through my place, they found all the drugs and alcohol. That was part of my lifestyle back then. They arrested me on drug possession. I remember sitting in a jail cell that night realizing, wow…this is a really dark time. And I’ve shared this a couple of times, I thought about, the only time in my life I thought about that. People talk about what was the low point, because I remember thinking about they take your shoelaces, they take everything from me when you get checked in the jail. I was there on drug possession, on drugs they found. Because there was a lot of big quantities that was a big party house there and uh, they took me in and I was in the jail cell and put me by myself because they didn’t want to put me in general population, because people knew who I was, inmates get all stirred up. So I’m in the jail cell and I actually thought, wow, there’s no camera in here, maybe…I was trying to think of a way to end it. I thought about climbing up, there’s a dividing wall in this little cell I was in by myself that set the toilet off. I thought about maybe if I could climb up on top of that divider wall and put my hands behind my head and fall head first on the cement floor, I could end it all. I didn’t do that, but I sure thought about it.”

•On if that night was a wake-up call: “I went into total self-medication mode and I got high every night – I would pop pills, drink. I mean, I wasn’t trying to kill myself, but I was on the path of destruction for sure. It’s a miracle I didn’t overdose so many of those nights over those next couple years. I ended up moving into a hotel and even isolating myself, I wasn’t going out anymore, I was in a total period of isolation at that point.”
•On his relationship with Randy before Liz’s death: “They were divorced for what we’re talking about almost 10 years. She had remarried and they were long, no longer a part of each other’s lives at all. Randy and I had traveled together some in WWE, we always got along great, we trained together. From my end, and I never felt anything off Randy, I never felt any issue there whatsoever. Admired, respected him, never felt an issue with Randy.”
•On his relationship with Randy after Liz’s death: “I never met Randy afterwards.”

Bobby Lashley was interviewed on 98.5’s Wrestling Inside The Ropes podcast ahead of Raw coming to the TD Garden on July 9. Lashley talked about preparing for his match against Roman Reigns at Extreme Rules on July 15 saying it’s everything to him right now:
“This is everything for me right now, he said. “To have the opportunity to go against him. He’s kind of the face of the company and he has been for some time. The fact that I get to wrestle him so soon and battle him so soon. I mean the preparation is just like preparing for a fight. You gotta be prepared. We’re sports entertainment but we have to go out there and be physically ready and have everything in tune to have a great match. Not necessarily as a stepping stone to get to Brock, but I know that’s the guy I need to beat to get to Brock, so I want to have a great match and I just want to show that I am better.”
Lashley also talked about his match against Umaga at WrestleMania 23 with President Donald Trump in his corner and Vince McMahon in Umaga’s corner. The match featured a hair vs. hair stipulation with Trump and McMahon’s hair on the line based on the winner of the match. Lashley said it was good to work with Trump because he was open to anything to make the match work
“It was actually good,” he said. “When we went out there… in wrestling especially when there’s so many moving parts like we had from Stone Cold Steve Austin as referee, me and Umaga wrestling, Trump and Vince in there, Shane McMahon in there. I mean there were so many moving parts and so many people had their responsibilities to make that match successful. I remember him coming in. He wasn’t one that came barging his way in and telling us how to do what we had to do. He just came in there and said, ‘Hey, look, I want to make this match as amazing as it could be so what can I do.’ I thought that was really cool. He said what can I do, so Vince and different people said let’s do this and if we can do this and he opened up doors for us that I don’t think we had before. I think he brought so much notoriety to the match. It was great all the way around.”
Other highlights of the interview included:
-Lashley saying he returned to WWE because of “Unfinished business.”
-Lashley mentioned one of his goals that he is now in WWE is getting a one on one match with Brock Lesnar. Lashley said he’d be “more than interested” in wrestling Lesnar.

The Oct. 9 episode of WWE Smackdown on USA Network last night drew a 1.53 rating, up slightly from the 1.52 rating last week, but the second lowest of the year and won from the 1.68 average for 2018 and well down from the 1.74 average through this week a year ago.
One year ago this week Smackdown drew a 1.75 rating and two years ago a 1.72 rating.
Nevertheless, Smackdown finished no. 2 among all cable shows in the key 18-49 demo with a 0.7 rating according to the TVByTheNumbers chart, behind only the MLB Division Series game on TBS which drew nearly triple the demo rating at 1.9.
Smackdown drew 2.135 million viewers, less than one third of the total viewers for the MLB game which was 7.147 million. Four news/politics shows on Fox News and MSNBC drew more viewership also, but scored lower ratings in the adult 18-49 demo.
