F4W NEWSLETTER: Divisive main event headlines AEW Full Gear

Joseph Currier looks at the reactions to Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega’s unsanctioned match.

AEW’s first pay-per-view since debuting on weekly television was headlined by what will likely end up being the most divisive match of the year.

For some, Jon Moxley and Kenny Omega’s unsanctioned lights out match at Full Gear was a hardcore classic. To others, it was a gratuitously violent and long match that was a misstep for AEW. They wrestled for over 38 minutes and did everything they could to try and have the epic hardcore match that its biggest fans thought it was. A board covered in mouse traps, a chain, a screwdriver, glass, barbed wire, and a barbed wire spider web were just some of the weapons used. By the end of the match, part of the ring was deconstructed — and a Paradigm Shift DDT on the exposed wood finally put an end to things and gave Moxley the win.

Every move AEW has made in its brief history has been overanalyzed to the point of exhaustion. Each positive and negative moment has probably been assigned too much importance. But AEW is defining its identity over the course of the promotion’s first year. Moxley vs. Omega is now always going to be part of that. Full Gear was an opportunity for AEW to put their best foot forward to an audience that has sampled their first six weeks of TV. While it’s likely that some things were gimmicked and Moxley vs. Omega wasn’t quite as violent as it came off as, AEW not only didn’t shy away from the “blood and guts” criticism that Vince McMahon leveled at them — they leaned into it.

Following last week’s episode that featured a heavily promoted appearance by CM Punk, Tuesday’s edition of WWE Backstage on FS1 averaged 121,000 viewers, down from 180,000 last week.

An appearance by WWE COO Paul “HHH” Levesque was the most promoted aspect from this week’s show as Punk was not advertised to appear. This week’s panel featured regulars Renee Young, Christian, Paige, Samoa Joe, and Booker T.

Backstage drew a 0.05 rating in the 18-49 demographic, placing it 125th in the demo for the day on cable.

A preview episode of WWE Backstage, which aired on October 16th following a ALCS baseball game, did 597,000 viewers. A second episode that aired after a special episode of SmackDown on FS1 did 426,000 viewers.

Petey Williams was on the Wrestling Perspective Podcast with Dennis Farrell and spoke about Impact Wrestling’s new television deal with the Pursuit Channel. The following highlights were supplied to PWTorch.com by Himanshu D. To listen to the full interview, CLICK HERE.

•On if the Pursuit Channel is a step down from Pop: “I don’t think you’re the only one thinking that, honestly. You hear rumors on the Internet like negotiating with SyFy, WGN America, TruTV, all big name brands, programming that if you mention it everybody will be like, ‘Oh yeah, TruTV, I watch Impractical Jokers’ or ‘WGN…’ I don’t even know what’s on WGN, ‘SyFy, yeah I watch… that’s a big network. Smackdown used to be on there.’ So a lot of people are thinking, ‘Pursuit? What’s Pursuit Channel?’ And it made sense to me initially as soon as I read it because I didn’t know about it until I woke up this morning and the big news was out and I’m like, ‘Ah Pursuit now, okay. This is awesome. Pursuit’s owned by Anthem, Anthem owns Impact’. Me, in my mind, I’m like, ‘Why didn’t we do something like this till now? Why didn’t we do this a year ago? Anthem owns Impact, Anthem owns Pursuit, why haven’t we done this before?’ It made sense to me initially because we’re all parties wanting to succeed in this because we’re all feeding into each other. We are all owned by each other so it makes sense.”

•On if Impact makes any money from Anthem moving it to one of their own networks: “I mean obviously money is involved. Also when you have Pop TV and you have the demographic, and I don’t even know what Pop TV’s demographic is per se, but when you have to be cautious about what you say or do so that you can still be on that Pop TV channel, that’s tough, because that limits what you can do with your product. Now that we’re on Pursuit, it’s an outdoor channel, it’s a demographic that’s pretty much for males like hunting, shooting, fishing, and that kind of stuff, male-dominated interests and activities. So it might be interesting to see what kind of product that going forward Impact is going to kind of put out there because hunting… you’re killing living things. I mean you’re still killing a living thing on television. It’s going to be interesting to see whether we are going to be a little bit more edgy, maybe? Which I know a lot of wrestling fans have been starved for with the PG era that’s been going on in WWE. So maybe that’s going to be a thing going forward. I don’t know, I really don’t know, but it could be interesting.”

•On if they can post episodes online sooner now that they’re on the Pursuit Channel: “Yeah, on Pop, you were able to get it on our Global Wrestling Network app ten days after it aired, so I don’t know what it’s going to be with that. It might be like, ‘Hey, directly after it airs, you can watch it’. That’d be cool for people that don’t have Pursuit, like if you have Comcast or whatever the case may be. And I think it would definitely benefit our app if that was the case. The only thing that I know with the Pursuit Channel is that just through the press release that it’s one of the fastest growing television networks out there this past year. They had like a 15 percent increase over the past year, which I understand for a new company it’s only been around for ten years. NBC is not looking to get a 15 percent growth because everybody’s had NBC since NBC’s been around and Fox and NBC and all that kind of stuff. So for a newer network to see this growth, that’s a huge thing.”

•On his initial reaction when he heard Impact was heading to Pursuit Channel: “Yeah, I mean initially I was like, ‘Oh good we got off of Pop.’ And that’s what I was thinking, I’m like, ‘Oh, we announced a different cable company. This is a fresh start. People are going to be excited and stuff.’ Pursuit, yeah initially I was like, ‘Oh okay’, ’cause you know you hear all these rumours like SyFy and TruTV and WGN America, you could say those names to anybody living in your neighbourhood right now, they’d be like, ‘Yeah I have those networks. I know what they are. I watch shows on that network.’ If you say Pursuit, they’re like, ‘Yeah you know, I never really heard of it’.  So initially I was like, ‘Ah Pursuit’, I just look at it as… not still rebuilding but like it’s good that we have a new home. But I was really hoping for – obviously like WWE is announcing now they’re on like Fox and stuff like that. I was hoping for something a little bit more mainstream, I guess you could say. More viewers and all that kind of stuff for our product. But maybe right now that’s not where Impact is. Maybe we have to like build our brand again, because you know building it over a year – we’ve done our best, we still have a long ways to go. I think it will be fine. Looking at the growth of Pursuit, it’ll be fine. Everything will be okay, but initially I was like, ‘Pursuit? What’s that? I gotta go research this’ pretty much.”

•On going where the money goes whether it’s a bigger network or not: “Yeah, I mean obviously you’re trying to build your product and stuff like that. Going back to what I said about Impact’s first initial deal with Spike, if that was correct, it’s probably the same thing. You don’t want to be going into the red just to build your product because there’s no longevity in that and I think Impact’s looking at longevity. How can we make this last for one year, three years, five years, ten years into the future rather than just like, ‘Hey, let’s go for broke right now and this is our last ditch effort’ and stuff. Maybe Impact feels like, ‘Hey, we’re not at that point where we can just go for broke. Let’s build up a little bit.’ The wrestling world’s transitioning right now. Maybe there’s more to the story, but maybe they’re thinking like, ‘Hey, let’s not go for broke. Let’s do this safe and then just build from there.”

Sheamus appears on WWE SmackDown

July 3, 2020 | News | No Comments

Five weeks after WWE began hyping his return, Sheamus officially came back on tonight’s episode of SmackDown.

Sheamus appeared after Shorty G (Chad Gable) faced Dash Wilder on tonight’s show. Gable submitted Wilder with an ankle lock but was then attacked by The Revival. Wilder and Scott Dawson bailed when Sheamus came down, then Sheamus laid out Gable with the Brogue Kick.

Sheamus had been out of action for nearly nine months. Dave Meltzer reported in September that Sheamus was ready to return: “He’s been off and has spinal stenosis, which is not a good thing long-term for a wrestler. But he is ready to return and if a storyline is there, he would be brought back.”

The videos hyping Sheamus’ return included him criticizing the current state of SmackDown and saying that the show has become soft. Gable was mentioned by name in the first video, with Sheamus saying that all he sees is misfits and cowards.

The following article includes highlights of Eric Bischoff’s latest podcast talking about hot topics this week including Dean Ambrose leaving WWE and Jeff Jarrett returning to WWE. The following highlights were supplied to PWTorch.com by the show’s producers…

This week on the aftershow for his “83 Weeks” podcast, “After 83 Weeks with Christy Olson,” Eric Bischoff responds to Dean Ambrose’s upcoming WWE departure, declaring, “I don’t think it matters at all.” The former WCW President explains how Vince McMahon protects WWE from the loss of top stars, and what Jeff Jarrett will be bringing to the table with his recent signing. Excerpts are below…

•Eric on Jeff Jarrett becoming a WWE producer/agent: I’ve worked with Jeff in a number of different capacities. As a talent, whatever. He’s achieved whatever he’s achieved. He was never that top guy, main event, big star. But he was a solid mid-card, upper mid-card performer throughout his career, which is, by the way, a hell of a lot. That shouldn’t sound as uncomplimentary as it’s intended to be… But when it comes to communicating a creative vision from a room full of writers and communicating that to talent in a way that the talent can understand, that’s the key to a good producer. Jeff is phenomenal at that. One of the best I’ve ever worked with. So I think he’s in a perfect role for what truly is his real skill set.

•If Dean Ambrose leaving WWE is a big loss to the company: No disrespect at all to Dean Ambrose…I don’t think it matters at all. That’s not because of Dean’s abilities or lack thereof. But in WWE right now WWE is the star. Everybody else on that roster is a costar, to one degree or another. Stars are now interchangeable. The roster is deep enough, and the pool of talent is deep enough that whether it’s a situation like Roman Reigns, as devastating as that was, WWE shifted on the fly. They didn’t even have to hit the clutch. They just kept going, right? I think that that’s intentional.

•Why Vince McMahon made talent secondary: People’s situations change. If you’ve invested all of your resources, not just financial but all of your television time and all that real estate into building up a character, and through some scenario that you couldn’t anticipate that character is no longer there, you’re in a rebuild situation. That can be devastating. WWE has gone through that before. They learned that lesson. Vince McMahon learned what happened when competition comes along and takes your talent, and I think he endeavored to build a company that was for the most part impervious to that. He did it by making WWE the star, and the talent less significant than the show that they’re on.

We’re looking for your thoughts on both the Elimination Chamber and UFC 248 shows, so you can leave a thumbs up, thumbs down or thumbs in the middle along with a best and worst match to [email protected]

We’re looking for reports on the TNA show on Friday in Atlanta, as well as NXT shows from Cleveland on Friday and Detroit on Saturday to [email protected]

Elimination Chamber at 6:30 p.m. Eastern on WWE Network:

Women’s Chamber: Shayna Baszler, Asuka, Natalya, Ruby Riott, Liv Morgan and Sarah Logan. Since the winner faces Becky Lynch and they’ve already shot the angle for Lynch vs. Baszler, one thinks Baszler wins. If not, then Vince changed his mind.  Baszler is a -1500 favorite while Asuka is +1200, Morgan is +3300, Riott is +2800, Natalya is +3300 and Logan is +10,000.
Smackdown tag title chamber: Miz & John Morrison, New Day, Usos, Lucha House Party, Dolph Ziggler & Robert Roode and Heavy Machinery.  The big thing looks to set up Otis vs. Ziggler. Miz & Morrison are -210 to retain the titles. On paper this looks like the best match on the show along with Daniel Bryan vs. Drew Gulak
Street Profits vs. Seth Rollins & Murphy for Raw tag titles. Street Profits are -350 favorites and Rollins & Murphy are +225.  Should be a good match.
Braun Strowman vs. Shinsuke Nakamura & Sami Zayn & Cesaro in a handicap match for the IC title. Lots of late betting on the heels so Strowman is only a -120 favorite.
Andrade vs. Humberto Carrillo for the U.S. title. Andrade is a -130 favorite. This should be good as well.
A.J. Styles vs. Aleister Black no DQ.  Black is a -165 favorite. The only way I can see Styles losing, given he’s facing Undertaker at WrestleMania, is that there is outside interference and his guys either botch it and he loses, or it’s Undertaker who causes it.
Daniel Bryan vs. Drew Gulak. Technically this should be good. Bryan is a -420 favorite. The thing here is whether the crowd gets into Gulak, since he’s gotten very little of a push. It should be noted that Gulak is from the area so the crowd should be better for him  than somewhere else.
Viking Raiders vs. Curt Hawkins & Zack Ryder. It reads like a Viking Raiders win.

From a star power standpoint, this is one of the weakest PPVs the company has ever done, and it’s on a short build. So many regular top stars aren’t on the show and neither the WWE nor Universal titles are at stake. The idea of the key matches have changed many times.

SUNDAY NEWS UPDATE

Bryan and I will be back tonight with Wrestling Observer Radio covering a ton of stories including David Starr, Scott Steiner, Wednesday ratings, Elimination Chamber and everything else we didn’t get to last night. Our awards show is up on the site right now from last night.

For Google searches, UFC 248 had 2.1 million searches. That’s a strong number, really better than would have been expected for that show, so the late build of the two main events was strong.  Things not associated with UFC 248 that made the list was Tony Ferguson at No. 17 on Friday with 50,000 and Scott Steiner due to his health scare at No. 17 on Saturday with 50,000.

Regarding the two title fights at UFC 248, in Israel Adesanya vs. Yoel Romero, Sal D’Amato scored rounds three through five for Adesanya, Chris Lee scored rounds two through five for Adesanya and Ron McCarthy scored three through five for Adesanya. I scored three through five for Adesanya as well.  Media scores at last look were 61 percent for Adesanya. It was close.

For Zhang Weili vs. Joanna Jedrzejczyk, Michael Bell scored one, four and five for Weili, Derek Clearly scored two, four and five for Weili and Eric Cohen scored three through five for Jedrejczyk. Media scores were 71 percent for Weili. That fight is likely to win fight of the year and was one of the greatest fights in UFC history.

Paul Levesque received a Lifetime Achievement award from Arnold Schwarzenegger yesterday as part of the Arnold Classic in Columbus, OH.

AAA has a press conference on Wednesday to announce TripleMania.

WWE
Paige will be appearing 7/3 to 7/5 for WAW, her parents’ promotion, in the U.K. at Pontins Southport.
UFC
Dana White last night said that if a Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor rematch happens, it would be the biggest fight in combat sports history. Well, that’s up there with Arum predicting Tyson Fury vs. Deontay Wilder would do McGregor-Pacquiao numbers. At least McGregor-Khabib will come closer than Fury-Wilder did.
Brian Ortega reportedly slapped Korean music artist Jay Park at last night’s show. It was quickly broken up. Park was the translator for Chan Sung Jung and evidently Ortega was mad at how he translated something.  Park told Ariel Helwani that Ortega came up to him when Jung went to the bathroom and asked if he was Jay Park. When he said “Yes,” according to Park, Ortega open palm slapped him.
AEW
Bill Apter talks to Jake Roberts.

In the context of an era where you can walk up to someone and call them “fat, smelly, and ugly” and then when they get mad, laugh and say, “Dude, I was just trolling you, settle down,” Kenny Omega took some digs at NXT talent in a recent interview at Sportskeeda. The following are key excerpts:

•”You can call it a war if you want. It’s like, to me, we’re in a completely different kind of business. I mean what they’re doing is different from what we’re doing. It’s weird, because it’s hard to say you’re going to war with people that I call my friends.”

•”[W]hen I sit back and look at the grand picture, I’m going to war with these dudes that, if we were on the same show together, the same promotion… let’s pretend there were no borders. Let’s pretend there were no promotions. Let’s just pretend there’s just one big promotion. If these guys were in the same show as me, they’d be in the dark match. They’d be in the opening match of my main event match.”

•”You wanna call that a war, you wanna call that competition? Go ahead. Maybe it’s fun for you to do. That’s cool. But we’re different planets. And you’re going to see that right away, when you see 10000+ arenas sold out. You’re going to see smiles on fans’ faces. You’re going to see real stars. Not developmental talent, but real stars appearing on your television sets, every week.”

Police have searched the Paris apartment of convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, advancing the French leg of a probe into trafficking claims against the disgraced US financier, prosecutors confirmed on Tuesday.

Detectives scoured Epstein’s luxury home in Paris on Avenue Foch, one of the capital’s most expensive streets, favoured by royalty, celebrities and billionaires, into the early hours of Tuesday.

Prosecutors said that investigators had last week also searched the premises of Karin Models, an agency founded by Jean-Luc Brunel, a French friend and former associate of Epstein.

Epstein was found hanged in his New York jail cell on August 10 while awaiting trial.

Before his death, prosecutors argued he should be kept behind bars ahead of his trial after finding a fake passport in a safe filled with diamonds and piles of cash in his $77 million (£62m) Upper East Side mansion.

Epstein was a well-connected financier who counted Prince Andrew, Donald Trump and Bill Clinton among his former friends.

In the bail memorandum, prosecutors said a search of his New York residence uncovered "an extraordinary volume of photographs of nude and partially nude young women or girls," some of which "appear to be of underage girls”.

Earlier this month, British Epstein victim Sarah Ransome recounted how she tried and failed to swim several miles from a 70-acre Caribbean island owned by Epstein called Little St James after months of abuse.

“I had been raped three times that day,” she said. “A shark would have been my best friend at that point. I didn’t even think about it – it was just, get me away.”

But Epstein had installed video cameras all over the island, she said, and within minutes of her setting out a team had appeared to try and persuade her to return to the house.

French prosecutors are conducting an investigation into alleged abuse regarding Epstein in parallel with US authoritiesCredit:
New York State Sex Offender Registry

Miss Ransome filed a lawsuit against Epstein, his confidante Ghislaine Maxwell, and three alleged assistants, claiming she was trafficked for sex over the course of seven months.

Ms Maxwell denied the allegations and applied for a Motion to Dismiss the Claim.

The case was eventually settled out of court, but Miss Ransome told her full story for the first time in the wake of Epstein’s suicide to encourage other young women to come forward.

In August, she was one of 20 women to recount their allegations against Epstein at a special hearing in a Manhattan court.

Claims of abuse have since emerged across the Atlantic, and three women have already given evidence to investigators in France.

French investigators are trying to identify French citizens or residents who were victims or accomplices of Mr Epstein’s alleged crimes.

Until the women came forward, investigators were pursuing allegations that Mr Epstein raped or sexually assaulted underage girls in France on the basis of three letters from Innocence in Danger, an advocacy group.
