SCSU WRESTLING NEWS AND NOTES

  • The #1 ranked St. Cloud State University wrestling team continued its winning ways with a pair of NSIC victories last week.  On Feb. 7, the Huskies charted a 38-3 victory over Northern State at Halenbeck Hall and they completed the week with a 20-14 win at #6 Upper Iowa on Feb. 10.
  • The Huskies have now won 46 consecutive dual matches dating back to an 18-13 loss to Augustana on Jan. 27, 2011.  SCSU is now 20-0 this season and the Huskies sit in first place in the NSIC with a 7-0 league record.
  • SCSU will host Minnesota State on Feb. 14 in a battle for first place in the NSIC.  The Mavericks will enter the match with a 6-0 record in NSIC play, so a victory by the Huskies on Feb. 14 would clinch a second consecutive NSIC crown for SCSU.
  • SCSU senior Shamus O’Grady moved his season mark to 31-1 with a pair of wins this past week.  He is ranked #1 in the nation at 184-pounds and his career record at SCSU stands at 99-18.  He has not lost a match this season since the title bout at the Finn Grinaker Open on Nov. 17, 2012.  O’Grady needs nine more victories this season to tie the team record for most wins a season, which was set by Tad Merritt at 40-2 in 2010-11.
  • SCSU senior Jake Kahnke helped ice the Huskies’ win at Upper Iowa on Feb. 10 with a 3-1 sudden death victory over UIU’s Carl Broghammer at 285-pounds.
  • A win for the Huskies on Feb. 14 would mark the 100th career win at SCSU for head coach Steve Costanzo.  He is current record at SCSU is 99-23 over seven seasons.
  • SCSU’s nationally ranked wrestlers include #4 Eric Forde at 125-pounds, #1 Andy Pokorny at 133-pounds, #8Clint Poster at 157-pounds, #1 Shamus O’Grady at 184-pounds and #2 Jacob Kahnke at 285.
  • Eric Forde is 23-5 in 2012-13 at 125-pounds for the Huskies, while Clint Poster is 28-3 at 157-pounds for the Huskies.
  • #1 ranked 133-pounder Andy Pokorny suffered just his second loss of the season on Feb. 10 against #2 Trevor Franklin at UIU.  Pokorny now owns a 16-2 record for the Huskies this season.
  • As the Huskies look ahead to the match against #10 Minnesota State, SCSU owns a three-match win streak against the Mavs.  The last time the Huskies lost a match to MSU was on Feb. 19, 2009 with a 24-14 setback at Halenbeck Hall.  Last year, the Huskies collected a 31-6 victory at MSU to clinch the NSIC crown.  The last time this match was held in Halenbeck Hall, the Huskies charted a 25-9 victory over the Mavericks.
  • Clint Poster paces the Huskies with 11 falls this season, while Shamus O’Grady has 10 for the Huskies.  As a team, SCSU has 133 falls in 2012-13.
  • A victory over MSU would allow the Huskies to tie the school record for most dual wins in a season.  Last year, SCSU was 21-0 in dual meet action.
  • A win over MSU would also allow the Huskies to tie the current NCAA Division II record of 47 consecutive dual match victories, which was set by Pittsburgh-Johnstown from Dec. 2, 1994-Nov. 20, 1996.
  • SCSU will enjoy a few days after its match on Feb. 14 before heading down to the NCAA Division II Super Region 3 on Feb. 24 in Waterloo, Iowa.  The Huskies are the two-time defending regional champ and have finished as the runner-up at the NCAA DII championships in 2012 and 2011.

– As seen above, “Legends of WrestleMania Month” for ESPN’s SportsCenter “Off The Top Rope” segment continued this week with WWE Hall of Famer Mick Foley. This week’s segment opens with a look back at this week’s RAW before Jonathan Coachman names Foley’s Top WrestleMania Moments. Top Debut was as Mankind at WrestleMania 13 against Owen Hart and The British Bulldog, Top Tag Team was as Cactus Jack at WrestleMania 14 with Chainsaw Charlie against The New Age Outlaws, Top Spot was WrestleMania 22 with Edge spearing him through a flaming table and Top Main Event was WrestleMania 16 against The Rock, Triple H and Big Show for the WWE Title.

In the videos below, Foley joins Coachman, who asks about Foley’s favorite WrestleMania moments. As a fan, Foley names Randy Savage vs. Ricky Steamboat from WrestleMania 3 and as a wrestler, his favorite moment was his first at WrestleMania 13 in 1997 when Steve Austin and Bret Hart had their classic match. Regarding the flaming table spot with Edge, Foley says he felt an enormous amount of pressure. Foley says when he first retired, WrestleMania moments weren’t a must-have thing but he and Edge were determined to make one. He says they went out with the goal of stealing the show and he believes they were successful.

Regarding The Undertaker vs. Shane McMahon inside Hell In a Cell at WrestleMania 32, Foley says every time two people step in the Cell they’re always looking to live up to the legacy of the structure. Foley says the Cell is almost structured for Shane and Taker, who are willing to do almost anything, and the Cell itself allows you to redefine what the word anything means. Coach asks which character Foley enjoyed the most – Cactus Jack, Mankind or Dude Love. Foley talks about going home and shaving his hair, which was his way of saying he would never do anything in public again. Until Vince McMahon called. Foley says he had the time of his life reinventing the authority figure as Commissioner and really enjoyed it. Foley says he felt like he was making a difference and making people smile. He also talks about enjoying the Mankind character during his days teaming with The Rock.

Coach says Foley has never been a finely-tuned athlete and asks what allowed him to be popular with fans for so long. Foley says he made the most of what he was given and found a way to connect with fans in a way that was real. Foley says he’s really lucky and fortunate. He’s 50 years old and still gets to wear swear pants. Foley also talks about his post-in-ring career and more.

– WWE printed a “No DQ” stipulation for tonight’s WWE World Heavyweight Title match on t-shirts, posters and banners but never announced the stipulation.

In the end, Roman Reigns defeated Triple H in the WrestleMania 32 main event and became a three-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion. The match saw Stephanie McMahon take a spear.

WWE ended up running almost an hour long with WrestleMania 32. They had notified cable providers overseas of an additional 15-20 minute overrun but they went beyond that.

Reigns and new WWE Women’s Champion Charlotte will be on NBC’s “Today” show tomorrow morning, which means they have a late flight to New York City. We will have a recap of their appearance.

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff is still mulling his future with the German outfit amid ongoing talks with Daimler chairman and Mercedes CEO Ola Källenius.

Wolff has been at the helm of the Brackley squad since 2013, overseeing the team’s outstanding run of six consecutive Constructors’ and Drivers’ championships.

The 48-year-old’s contract with Mercedes expires at the end of the year and talks are ongoing with Merc boss Ola Källenius about the exact role Wolff – who also holds a 30% stake in the Mercedes F1 team – will fulfill moving forward.

One possibility rumored to be on the table is the Austrian handing his team principal responsibilities to someone else and accepting a more senior position with Mercedes, one that would allow him to take the occasional break from F1.

Horner hints at Mercedes complicity in Racing Point case

“I really have enjoyed many years in F1 in that role, and the discussions that we are having are very good,” Wolff said.

“I am happy that my relationship with Ola is probably as good as it can be, and we speak almost every day and there are many factors that make me want to stay in F1.

“On the other side, it takes a toll, and this plays into my under consideration.

“But as it stands there is no reason not to continue with Mercedes, and we will find out in which role.”
Wolff insisted he had no plans to leave Mercedes but needed to take many things into consideration before committing to the future.

“We want to do the best for the team and continue to see the team prosper,” he added. “And as I have said before, I really enjoy the role, and my plan is to continue

“I enjoy what I do. I enjoy it mostly because I love to work with the people that are within the team.

“There is no better place for me to be in meeting room with the engineers, to sit in the garage and watch the great work that is happening around. I enjoy the battles that we have off track. I like to engage with our sponsors and partners.

“What that means for the future is a decision that I need to take together with my wife, and together with Ola.

“That doesn’t mean I won’t be around as a team principal or I won’t be around in another role, but it’s just that I’m thinking about it.”

Like Wolff, Lewis Hamilton has yet to commit to a new contract with Mercedes. But the Briton would like clarity on Wolff’s future before putting pen to paper.

“It’s flattering that he says that it is dependent on what I do, but I think he doesn’t need me,” Wolff commeneted. “He has a great team there that will always support him.

“But as I said before, I haven’t taken the decision yet. These are discussions that are ongoing and that are positive and I enjoy them.

“I don’t want to give you the spin that I’m leaving, because that’s not the case,” the Austrian added.

“I’m in a moment of reflection, where Formula 1 is heading to, what is happening around the COVID case and also personal reasons that I said before.

“Susie [Wolff] is in a good place running a Formula E team and that means she’s away a lot. I’ve been to God knows how many races, 120 Formula 1 races, in the last eight years.

“That is something we’re thinking about.”
