Lando Norris has revealed that he was far from the confident and secure rookie he appeared to be when he entered F1 last year, the McLaren driver admitting to putting on a brave face while also struggling with a few demons.

Norris scored his first top-ten finish in just his second race with McLaren, the 19-year-old gradually asserting himself as the season unfolded.

But underneath the surface of his burgeoning talent, doubts and anxieties lingered for the young charger.

On today’s International Mens Day, in a blog entry for McLaren partner and mental health charity ‘Mind’, Norris opened up about his struggles and the need to talk candidly about mental health.

“During my first season racing in Formula 1, I might have looked like the new kid on the block full of confidence and enthusiasm but that really wasn’t the case,” Norris said.

“I covered up the fact that I was struggling a lot with nerves and anxiety. Despite making it to F1, something I had dreamt of ever since I began racing, I found myself questioning my own self-belief: worrying if I had what it took, comparing myself with my team-mate and other drivers.

“It screws with your head. It’s tough to deal with and I’m sure many other drivers have struggled with it in the past.

“But in sport, because no one wants to give the opposition an edge or show any weakness, we don’t talk about mental health as much as we should – and we really should.”

Norris underscored the importance for a young driver to have key individuals in one’s entourage one can open up to, including team members.

“Having a strong, core group of people around you, whether it’s family, friends, colleagues, or someone else you feel you can open up to, is essential,” continued the McLaren charger.

“For me, my family is most important. But when I’m racing, I’m away from home so my manager, performance coach and engineers – the people I work closest with – are my family.

“We spend so much time working together that we know each other really well and, for all of us to perform at our best, we need to be comfortable and open with each other.

“Just because I’m the one driving the car, it’s not just about how I feel. Everyone in the team must feel good about themselves and what they are doing to be in the right frame of mind and perform.

“Although we were physically apart for most of the winter and, of course, during lockdown, I spent a lot of time talking to this core group of people to try to overcome the nerves and anxiety I felt – something which risked affecting my second year in F1,” he added.

“By talking things through with them, it helped me to come into this season feeling much better about myself – more confident, more positive. It really highlights just how powerful talking to someone can be and the importance of having people around you that you can trust and rely on.”

Norris says he relied on a mind coach during his formative years in motorsport and up until the end of his first F1 season. But the Briton’s level of confidence eventually allowed him to “take more responsibility” for his mental health.

“Until the end of last season, I worked with a mind coach for a few years – another great example of someone I could reach out to, to work on my nerves and get me into a more positive mental state,” he said.

“But this year I felt confident enough to take more responsibility for my own mental health.

“I think it’s all part of the growing process. I had reached a stage where I felt ready to think for myself more when it came to finding ways to overcome mental challenges.”

But Norris’ personal development won’t restrain the McLaren driver from raising awareness for the a serious issue of mental health.

“It’s something that affects us all, but it’s equally something people don’t feel like they can talk about,” he concluded.

“This needs to change and I hope that the work we’re doing at McLaren, in support of Mind, can be a driving force for better mental health for everyone.”

As noted, WWE announced on Tuesday night’s WWE Elimination Chamber 2019 “go-home” edition of SmackDown Live that Mustafa Ali has been pulled from Sunday’s WWE Championship Elimination Chamber Match, and replaced by Kofi Kingston.

Additionally, The New Day member took Ali’s spot in the Gauntlet Match to determine the last entrant, and thus the Superstar with the greatest advantage. The Gauntlet included all of the scheduled participants in Sunday’s match, which includes: Kingston, Daniel Bryan, A.J. Styles, Randy Orton, Jeff Hardy and Samoa Joe.

Kingston ended up being dubbed SmackDown Live’s “Marathon Man” after nearly going through the entire tournament, as he picked up wins over Bryan, Hardy and Joe before losing to Styles.

Styles would go on to lose to Randy Orton, who had the last entrant advantage in the Gauntlet match, showing its’ effectiveness by easily coming in fresh and winning the last and most important fall in the Gauntlet Match series.

With the win, “The Viper” will go into Sunday’s WWE Championship Elimination Chamber Match as the sixth and final entrant.

As we reported earlier this week, the WWE Championship match for the upcoming WWE Fastlane 2019 pay-per-view in March was confirmed on Tuesday night’s post-Elimination Chamber episode of WWE SmackDown Live.

As expected, Kofi Kingston earned the title shot with his recent performances in the SmackDown Live Gauntlet Match on last week’s show, and again in the actual WWE Championship Elimination Chamber Match at this past Sunday night’s PPV. Kingston pinned Bryan in the six-man tag-team main event on Tuesday night’s show, adding more momentum for The New Day member heading into next month’s PPV.

With that now known, Bryan vs. Kingston for the WWE Championship joins the rematch between The Usos and the team of The Miz and Shane McMahon, who will once again compete for the SmackDown Tag-Team Championships, as two confirmed matches for the WWE Fastlane 2019 PPV.

The tag title match was also officially added to the PPV lineup on this week’s SmackDown Live show.

WWE returns to the WWE Network this evening with the latest weekly episode of NXT TV from Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida.

WWE.com released the following preview for tonight’s show:

WWE NXT preview, Mar. 13, 2019: Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic moves into high gear for semifinals

As the road to NXT TakeOver: New York draws near, Aleister Black & Ricochet collide with #DIY, and Moustache Mountain battle The Forgotten Sons in the Dusty Classic Semifinals. Plus, Bianca Belair and Io Shirai compete to determine who will challenge Shayna Baszler for the NXT Women’s Title.

Aleister Black & Ricochet prepare for semifinals action against #DIY

What will happen when the all-star alliance of Aleister Black & Ricochet collides with a newly recharged #DIY in the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Semifinals?

Black & Ricochet overcame the dynamic force of Fabian Aichner & Marcel Barthel in the first round, while NXT Champion Tommaso Ciampa & Johnny Gargano got back to their old ways with a victory over Undisputed ERA’s Bobby Fish & Kyle O’Reilly. Both teams now find themselves one victory away from stepping into the final round of the Dusty Classic, which begs the question: Who will advance?

Black & Ricochet have made headlines across NXT, Raw and SmackDown LIVE as one of the best things going in the Tag Team division. For Ciampa & Gargano, a pair with enough history to fill an ESPN “30 for 30” special, their experimental reunion has proven to be successful, thanks to wins secured across the red, blue and black-and-gold brands.

In a collision that could alter the trajectory of both teams, the pressure will approach boiling levels when they lock up inside the squared circle for an explosive showdown.

It’ll be do or die when Black & Ricochet battle #DIY on the road to the Dusty Rhodes Tag Team Classic Final and NXT TakeOver: New York, where the winner of the tournament will face NXT Tag Team Champions The War Raiders.

Io Shirai and Bianca Belair vie for NXT Women’s Title opportunity

Two questions await the No. 1 Contender’s Match between Io Shirai and Bianca Belair this week. Will Belair still call herself “un-de-fea-ted” after the smoke clears? Or will Shirai take flight with an NXT Women’s Title opportunity at TakeOver: New York? Either way, expect a score to be settled when Shirai and Belair step inside the squared circle.

The root of their rivalry began to sprout on the Feb. 6 edition of NXT, when Shirai scored the pin over NXT Women’s Champion Shayna Baszler in a Six-Woman Tag Team Match that saw Shirai team with Belair and Kairi Sane. The EST of NXT had much to say about Shirai snagging the three-count, especially after she missed that opportunity in her NXT Women’s Title Match against Baszler at TakeOver: Phoenix. After weeks of testy exchanges concerning Belair’s and Shirai’s claims to a championship match, NXT General Manager William Regal came up with a solution, pitting them in a No. 1 Contender’s Match to determine the next challenger for The Queen of Spades at TakeOver: New York.

Will “The Big Strong Bois” overcome “The Savages of NXT?”

Trent Seven & Tyler Bate bested Montez Ford & Angelo Dawkins in an exhilarating matchup during last week’s first-round bout. However, the battle-tested duo will face as tough a challenge as they’ve seen when they step up against the brute and grizzled force of Steve Cutler & Wesley Blake.

Constantly operating with a chip on their shoulders, The Forgotten Sons have earned a reputation for leaving wreckage whenever they step into a ring. That much was certain during their chaotic First-Round Match against Oney Lorcan & Danny Burch, which culminated in Cutler & Blake unloading a cache of punishing tandem offense that left their opponents sprawled across the canvas. Do Moustache Mountain have what it takes to bypass the threat of Cutler & Blake and advance to the next round of the Dusty Classic? Or will The Forgotten Sons make this another successful Do Unto Others tour stop?

Find out this Wednesday at 8/7 C, only on WWE Network.

— A partial body cam video of WWE wrestler Jimmy Uso’s arrest was obtained and released by Detroit WDIV yesterday showing how he ended up in the back of a police car after a night of drinking with wife, Naomi. The incident occurred last month when Naomi – the driver – was pulled over for driving the wrong way in what she claimed was an unfamiliar city.

— Police claimed that when they pulled over the pair, a clearly intoxicated Uso took his shirt off and confronted police by squaring up. None of that footage is actually shown in the video below, but Naomi informs the officers that her husband is extremely drunk before she is eventually let go with the police giving her advice that “when he gets out, let him know he can’t be doing stuff like this.’

It looks like Flip Gordon won’t be working the Road To G1 Supercard show after all.

ROHWrestling.com issued the following statement on Tuesday evening:

FLIP GORDON RE-INJURES KNEE, WILL NOT APPEAR IN BALTIMORE

Flip Gordon has re-injured his right knee and will not be able to appear at Road to G1 Supercard in Baltimore on March 31.

Gordon, who suffered an MCL tear in his knee during a match in January and was medically cleared to return to in-ring action last week, competed in a match in Northern Ireland for Over the Top Wrestling on March 24. When he woke up the following morning, his knee was “locked up.”

He was able to make his flight home and visited his doctor this morning. There is concern that Gordon may have suffered a “bucket handle” meniscus tear, which would require surgery and keep him out of action for four-to-six months. The extent of the injury will not be known until the results of Gordon’s MRI exam are in.

Gordon will still appear at G1 Supercard Festival of Honor on Friday, April 5 at Madison Square Garden’s Hulu Theater as scheduled. For Full Schedule and Tickets, click here.

— TMZ caught up with WWE executive Stephanie McMahon, who told them that the company would love to have both Rob Gronkowski and Conor McGregor and that they are “always talking” to anyone with a big personality and athletic abiity.

Stephanie McMahon has her sights set on Conor McGregor and Rob Gronkowski … telling TMZ Sports she would LOVE to get both sports superstars in the WWE ring.

We talked to McMahon — Vince’s daughter AND WWE honcho — Friday night in NYC … and asked her if there was anyone outside the WWE fam (like Conor or Gronk) she’d be interested in signing to the organization.

“Anybody who has a real big personality. I’d love to have Gronk in the ring. Conor McGregor, huge personality,” McMahon told us.

“It’s really about bringing in the biggest personalities with the best athletic ability.”

We followed up … asking if there have been any conversations between WWE and Gronk or Conor.

“We are always having conversations.”

So, yea … definitely wasn’t a no.

That wasn’t all … Stephanie also talked about the 1st all-female main event at WrestleMania — and she made it crystal clear there’s 1 simple reason Ronda, Becky, and Charlotte are headlining — they’re the best.

“It’s not about women having this opportunity because of a movement. It’s about these 3 women, Becky Lynch, Charlotte Flair, and “Rowdy” Ronda Rousey being the biggest stars in WWE right now with the best storyline, the best characters,” McMahon says.

“They are the main event because they’ve earned it, and that’s what our audience is most interested in seeing.”
