Steiner has a familiar warning for Haas’ rookies

February 10, 2021 | News | No Comments

Guenther Steiner is aware of the risks involved in running a pair of rookies in F1, but the Haas boss has nevertheless addressed a clear, and familiar, warning to the team’s new drivers.

Haas will entrust its cars this season to two absolute beginners, Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin, who both step up from F2.

While there are benefits to running a pair of young drivers who can be steered in the direction of the team and can grow with the latter, there are also potential pitfalls linked to the pair’s lack of experience.

Steiner isn’t expecting Schumacher and Mazepin to shine in their maiden F1 campaign, but the Italian also wants to avoid any costly on-track encounters such as those that befell Kevin Magnussen and Romain Grosjean in the past, such as at Silverstone in 2019, and which enraged the Haas team boss.

Hence, the latter’s staunch warning to his, and the words of caution that would sound quite familiar to the team’s previous pair of drivers.

“If they fight without damaging the team, I have no problem with that,” Steiner told Germany’s RTL. “However, if their cars make contact, I’ll have a problem and then they’ll have a problem.”

Beyond keeping Schumacher and Mazepin in line, Steiner’s job this season will be to steer the US outfit through a transition year during which progress will likely be hard to come by as Haas ‘s 2021 car will have undergone little changes since last year.

The team has declined to use its two development tokens to save costs as it focuses most of its resources on the design of its all-new 2022 car.

Nevertheless, Steiner hopes that an upgraded Ferrari engine will provide Haas with a chance to perform on the same level – and perhaps even better – as its Williams and Alfa Romeo rivals at the back of the field.

“It would be ideal to leave Alfa Romeo and Williams behind. That will be difficult, it will be a fight like last year,” he said.

“Our engine will certainly be better. Alfa has it in there too, but maybe we can catch up with Williams, otherwise there’s not much more possible at the moment because we were just too far away last year.”

Atlanta television station WSB-TV has posted a new article on their web site featuring a new interview with Chris Benoit’s father, Michael Benoit. Michael said in the piece that his son was “fine” when they spoke on Father’s Day. He said in the interview that he was unaware of any problems between Chris and Nancy.

When the steroids issue that the mainstream media has focused on was brought up, Michael Benoit said, “There’s a lot of stories we know have been fabricated”

Michael also commented on Nancy family saying, “We pray desperately that Nancy’s family is able to deal with this situation.”

Congress Wants Hearings For Steroids In Wrestling

February 9, 2021 | News | No Comments

Source: New York Daily News

The Chris Benoit situation was a senseless tragedy and has has affected countless people both in and out of the wrestling industry. The story has gained tremendous mainstream attention and its affect on the overall landscape of professional wrestling is not yet fully understood.

However – it is clear within World Wrestling Entertainment that a “worst case scenario” would be major involvement by the United States government into their subculture. It now appears the worst may become a reality.

Congressman Cliff Stearns, a republican from Florida, said 89 wrestlers had died before the age of 50 between 1985 and 2006, and he called on Congress to investigate.

“This abnormally high number of deaths of young, fit athletes should raise congressional alarms,” Stearns said. “Congress needs to investigate the recent events and find out how big of a problem steroid use is in professional wrestling. Steroid use is a major public health problem that deserves Congress’ full attention.”

Former pro wrestler , better known as Konnan, agrees with Cliff Stearns. “I welcome the congressman’s comments and I am definitely available to testify about the exploitation in wrestling. The wrestling life needs to be investigated. It’s a draconian work schedule. We’re on the road year-round. No other profession is that physical. At least touring rock bands get a few months to recuperate. Baseball players and football players get time off. But in wrestling, you can’t take time off to recuperate because you might wind up losing your job. If Congress thought baseball was bad, just wait until they look into wrestling. I hope they do it soon. People are dying.”

Teddy Long gets things going by announcing that Edge is injured and can’t compete at the Great American Bash. Long tells the crowd that Edge must relinquish the World Heavyweight Title and a large portion of the crowd roars its approval. Many are chanting “Loser!” as Edge takes the microphone to make his announcement. Edge, one of the WWE’s best performers with the microphone, does a great job at his assignment of laying the blame for his injury at the feet of Kane, explaining to the jeering crowd that Kane was looking for a way to make their match at the Great American Bash a little easier. Edge tosses in just the right amounts of emotion and threats and the crowd seems unsure if Edge is really upset about this – for real – or if he’s working a story. Edge gets them going with a little smacktalk and the booing starts again. Edge perseveres throughout it, however, and makes the crowd sit through a tribute video that he has prepared. Long coaxes Edge to hand over the title and he announces that there will be a 20-Man Over-the-Top Battle Royal to determine the new World Heavyweight Champion. Edge won’t give up the title, mouthing off, and the crowd turns on him even more. Edge works it to near tears and he makes a great deal of drama about it all, finally handing over the belt after announcing the names of all the men he’s beaten, including John Cena, Batista and the Undertaker. As it’s handed over, the crowd goes wild. Edge exits to chants of “Loser!” It’s a rough business.

We are treated to a few of the Battle Royal men prepping backstage: Mark Henry pressing some backstage equipment overhead, the spectacular physique of Chris Masters as he does a few sets of biceps curls, Kane pacing back and forth and some comic relief with Eugene doing his version of jumping jacks.

Victoria vs Torrie Wilson
Following up from their disagreement two weeks ago and the match last week that Torrie Wilson won by count out, these two meet again in a long match that doesn’t have the same edge that last week’s match had. There were more kicks to the stomach than I think I’ve ever seen in any match. Torrie makes the most of the opening moments, keeping Victoria either down on the mat from punches or out of the ring. I’d say she gets the majority of the offense in their match this week. Victoria takes the added angle of working both the ref and Torrie with a lot of lip service and she answers most of Torrie’s attempts to drive her down. There’s no doubt that Victoria is an accomplished wrestler and tonight Torrie shows she’s pretty good in the ring, too. As the match progresses, Torrie manages to turn most of Victoria’s offense back at her but Victoria does get her up in the Widow’s Peak and it seems like Torrie might be able to get out of it, as she had done for many of Victoria’s earlier holds. No dice – Victoria executes the move and wins the match. A nice touch at the end with Victoria pointing down at Torrie and screaming, “I told you so!”
Winner: Victoria

A few more of the Battle Royal men are shown backstage: Deuce and Domino contemplating their chances, Jimmy Wang Yang doing a redneck yell and an appearance by Batista who simply walks by Deuce and Domino, snickering. Deuce makes a feeble attempt to lunge at him as Domino and Cherry “hold” him back. Kind of funny… A Rey Mysterio Return Promo is shown and we see some repeat footage of Edge handing the belt to Teddy Long.

20-Man Battle Royal
This match is to determine the next SmackDown World Heavyweight Champion. When we come back from a commercial break all the men are in the ring except Batista, MVP, Finlay, Khali and Kane, who enter in that order. The belt – with Edge’s name on it – sits ringside. The usual all-hell-breaks-loose action starts things off. Batista and Khali go at it right away. The camera is all over the place at the beginning and it’s difficult to capture everything that’s happening with so many men in the ring. Chris Masters tries to eliminate Jimmy Wang Yang and Funaki comes over to make the save and the two of them turn on Masters but Masters shrugs them both off and then proceeds to pound the two of them into the mat at the same time. There are a lot of nice touches like that throughout this Battle Royal. Khali makes the rounds of the ring and anyone he hits is on the mat instantly. Most people avoid him. The first elimination – or eliminations – is the Major Brothers who are both eliminated by Mark Henry – at the same time. Shannon Moore goes out next, eliminated by Khali who then sends Funaki out. Khali is chopping everyone until he faces off with Mark Henry. The two do some smacktalking until Kane comes by to beat on Khali and Batista beats on Henry, ending the showdown. All the wrestlers team up and eliminate Henry – to wild applause. MVP is working Matt Hardy in the corner until Dykstra takes over and works them both. Chavo and Finlay try to get Batista out but fail. Khali slams the brakes on some offense that MVP tries to take to him. Dave Taylor is laid out flat by Khali after he finishes with MVP. Chris Masters blasts Eugene in the corner while Khali works Matt Hardy some more. MVP wants more of Hardy and he interferes, only to find himself KO’d on his feet by a Khali chop. Matt Hardy takes over again on Khali – to no effect – and retreats. Batista eliminates Deuce and Domino and Dave Taylor is suddenly flying over the ropes. Kane and Batista face off and the camera lingers on them while other action happens all around them. Suddenly, the diminutive Jamie Noble appears between them and starts chopping them, hulking out – or so he thinks. Batista and Kane just stand there as Noble does a “Tarzan” chest beating. Then he’s airborne in another comic relief moment as Batista and Kane send him over the top ropes. Eugene appears in his place, looking for a high five but he gets the bum’s rush over the top ropes – same exit as Noble. I may have missed an exit, but we are down to ten men now. We cut to a commercial break A nice touch, no?

When we return, we see Finlay trying unsuccessfully to eliminate Masters. Chavo goes for a high flying dive off the top turnbuckle and flattens Batista but Kane drops Chavo with a punch and then does the same to an oncoming Finlay. Hardy goes for the Side Effect on MVP. Finlay tries to eliminate Batista but fails. There’s another commercial break and when we return Dykstra is eliminated by Masters. Hardy eliminates MVP. Wang Yang flies off the top turnbuckles and lands in Masters arms, who slips the Masterlock on him to a huge pop. Chavo attacks Masters from behind, releasing Wang Yang and Masters reverses that, almost getting Chavo into the Masterlock. Wang Yang dropkicks Masters from behind but fails to eliminate Masters with it. With Masters tying Chavo up, Wang Yang double teams him and together he and Chavo struggle to get Masters out. When they succeed, Chavo turns on Wang Yang and but Chavo ends up outside the ring.

The action slows down now with six men remaining. Hardy bulldogs Finlay and Khali drops Kane. Hardy had Finlay almost over the ropes and Kane works on Khali, who is finally beginning to show the fatigue of the match, although he won’t go over the ropes, even with Batista and Kane working together. Finlay gets Wang Yang on the apron and Hornswoggle appears, pulling him off the apron before disappearing under the ring. Hardy foolishly attacks Khali and finds himself stretched out on the mat. Khali drags him up, kicks him in the head and that’s it for Matt Hardy. Out he goes. Khali pounds on Kane, kicking him in the corner. Batista comes in but Khali turns on him, staggering Batista and then punching him to the mat. Khali clotheslines Kane and he waves for the staggered Batista to get up. A chop to the temple and Batista timbers to the mat. Kane gets the same treatment and Khali raises his arms overhead in premature victory. Finlay attacks Khali with the shillelagh until Kane puts an end to that. Kane tries a chokeslam on Finlay but Batista cuts that off. Batista eliminates Finlay and we are down to Batista, Kane and Khali. Batista and Kane go at each other and its pretty brutal at this point with some real looking punches landing. Batista attempts to bodyslam Kane over the ropes and they become tied up in the struggle until Khali comes over and shoves them both to the floor. And so…we have a new champion. The translator makes an entrance and the two of them celebrate in the ring. Khali, for once, breaks into a smile and it’s the first time I’ve ever seen a happy emotion on him. Not for long, though- as Long makes the announcement and offers him the title, Khali swipes it from a shocked Long’s hands. Batista is livid outside the ring, kicking the stairs in frustration as Khali and his sidekick raise their arms in victory.
Winner: The Great Khali, new World Heavyweight Champion

Kristal is interviewing the winner backstage and the translator lets us know that that Indians all over the world are celebrating. The translator then says that Khali says “…the days of Indians being labeled as quick mart owners, taxi drivers…and doctors….are over.” I didn’t get this, but then the WWE’s humor is often lost on me. We switch to Teddy Long and Vickie having a discussion backstage – their dilemma is who will face Khali at the Great American Bash? Their quandary is quickly ended when Long suggests that Batista and Kane duke it out tonight for that honor.

A promo for the John Cena vs Bobby Lashley match at the Great American Bash is shown. A variety of wrestlers opine on who will win and why, plus we see clips of Cena’s and Lashley’s matches as well as comments from both contenders. Cena has a lot of personality and fits the bill as both wrestler and speaker for the title. Lashley has very little personality at the microphone, or with a line of dialogue, so it will be interesting to see how he’ll fare if he wins the championship.

Kenny Dykstra vs Matt Hardy
The crowd didn’t seem to be into this match as much as they typically are for a Hardy match and it may be that the Battle Royal sapped some energy from them. Dykstra shows he’s an even better high-flyer than Matt Hardy, although the crowd isn’t impressed with him and continually chants for Hardy. Once again, Matt Hardy is outwrestled, as he was last week by Chris Masters, but Hardy squeaks out a Twist of Fate and takes the match just when things are looking dire for him. The crowd goes wild as Hardy makes his signature – and very odd – gesticulation to the crowd.
Winner: Matt Hardy

Chuck Palumbo commercial. “Prepare for the ride of your life.” This appears to be the latest promo gimmick – not only for those who are returning after absences, but for current performers. I guess Palumbo is the next selection for a “push.” Following this is another promo for the upcoming tag team of Jesse and Festus. It didn’t look good three weeks ago and it still doesn’t. MVP gets a short interview in the locker room and he goes off on the interviewer, telling everyone he’s the better than they are “and that includes Matt Hardy.”

Batista vs Kane
This match is to determine The Great Khali’s opponent at the Great American Bash. Batista shows Kane that he’s got just as much power, taking Kane down in a fashion that I’m sure Kane isn’t used to. Kane works Batista in the corner and bodyslams him, going for a pinfall. Kane ties Batista up until Batista lifts him up and drops him on his back. A whip to the ropes and Kane is down on the mat again. Batista then works Kane on the mat with a headlock and Kane shoves him off after getting to his feet and drops Batista after a whip to the ropes. Uppercut and Batista is hanging in the corner. A whip is reversed and Batista shows Kane his version of the uppercut. And it’s a beaut. Kane deposits Batista outside the ring and the two of them collide when they meet, dropping ringside as we go to a commercial.

When we come back, both men are in the ring. Kane ascends the ringpost and Batista punches him and does a modified version of a Batista Bomb, depositing Kane on the mat. He tries the real Batista Bomb, but Kane shoves him into the corner. Kane climbs up and begins hammering Batista’s head. Batista powers out, holding Kane aloft but Kane picks him up in a side slam. Both men are looking very winded. Kane is up on the corner as Batista crawls to his feet. A dive and Batista sidesteps him. Kane lands hard and Batista gives him a spinebuster. Batista goes for a spear and walks into Kane’s boot. Kane gets a near fall after slamming Batista to the mat. Kane stalks him and is ready for his finisher, but Batista moves – but not far enough. Kane clotheslines him over the ropes to the outside. Kane follows him out but Batista rams him into the stairs. Batista shoves him back in and climbs the ropes on his way in. A flying clothesline brings Kane down again.

Suddenly Khali is in the ring and he punches Batista, slapping him into the corner. Kane attacks and Khali is on him. Batista and Kane team up and they drive Khali over the top ropes to wild applause. The bell had rung ending the match and Long appears. This Sunday, he tells the retreating Khali, “…now you will be facing both of them!” A Triple Threat Match is now scheduled for the Great American Bash.
Winner: No contest – interference by the Great Khali.

It’s the 6th show since draft and with one Battle Royal and three singles matches, we did see a lot of the roster, but truly didn’t get a chance to really enjoy them. A Battle Royal is great fun, but the card could have included more singles matches and less repetition of Edge giving up the title. If SmackDown is to remain on an upbeat level – the way it started after the draft lottery, we need to concentrate on action, not backstage business. Too much hype for upcoming events, too much made of non-ring action happenings, this is what is dragging RAW down and we don’t need that happening on SmackDown. There’s plenty of time in two hours, but there doesn’t seem to be enough time for actual wrestling. We’ll need more than we got tonight if SmackDown is to keep improving.

Commentators: Todd Grisham & Jonathan Coachman
Ring Announcer: Lilian Garcia

Welcome aboard. Three matches on hand this week so let’s get to it. We begin with………………

William Regal vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan
Coachman notes Regal’s reliability and the ability to count on him as he ducks outside during Hacksaw’s entrance. Hacksaw starts the first of many USA chants. Regal gets in, Hacksaw pumps up the crowd with a loud here we go and foot stomp. Tussle to the ropes results in Regal landing forearms to Hacksaw’s gut and face. Hacksaw reverses off the ropes and comes back with two clotheslines and a slam. Regal rolls outside favouring his back. Back inside Hacksaw punches Regal into a corner. Hacksaw Irish whips but charges into an elbow. Regal delivers forearms to knock Hacksaw down before choking him with his knee. Regal backelbows Hacksaw down off the ropes as Grisham touches upon Regal and Hacksaw’s recent history which also involved Sandman and Carlito. Regal drops an elbow for a nearfall before hooking Hacksaw’s arm and chin and ripping at his face. Hacksaw hooks the hair then punches free. Hacksaw avoids Regal’s first attempt with a knee but falls victim a few seconds later. Regal gets nearfalls following a kneedrop and elbow drop. After dragging Hacksaw’s face across the top rope, Hacksaw fires back with punches. Regal telegraphs a backbodydrop off the ropes and hits a high knee to the temple for another nearfall. Chinlock applied by Regal who rips at Hacksaw’s face again before rubbing his forearm into Hacksaw’s mush aswell with another nearfall tied in. Hacksaw keeps his arm up before rising to his feet. Regal delivers kneelifts. Regal dodges Hacksaw’s jabs before forearming him down. Regal thinking he’s won raises his arms before dropping down into a cover for two. Regal continues his assault with head rams to the corner and more forearms until Hacksaw blocks a head ram to the corner and turns the tables on Regal. Hacksaw mounts for a punch assault but at five he stops to argue with the referee allowing Regal to boot the gut. Regal lands some kneelifts, Hacksaw reverses an Irish whip, Regal rebounds into a backbodydrop. Hacksaw calls for the three point stance so Regal rolls to the outside. Hacksaw goes out to follow but walks into a gut punch. Regal grabs a headlock but Hacksaw ends up sending Regal into the ringpost. Both men get back inside, Regal argues with the referee allowing Hacksaw to roll him up from behind for the shock win. 1-2-3. Here is Your Winner: HACKSAW JIM DUGGAN. Not a very good match. Shocked that Regal didn’t win here. Maybe in hindsight Regal’s prospects were better if he had stayed on Smackdown with Dave Taylor. That being said the crowd did pop for the finish. Post match sees Regal throw a fit inside the ring before taking his leave as soon as Hacksaw gets back in to celebrate with his 2×4. Sadly there’s no post match sneak attack from Regal.

Snitsky vs Jeff Michaels
Snitsky unloads from the start with knees to the gut and continues the assault after trapping Michaels’ arms in a double underhook position. Snitsky wrenches Michaels around a little before tossing him to the mat. Snitsky gets Michaels up in the ropes to pull at his face. Snitsky delivers a high hiptoss out of the corner then hits a big boot after running the ropes. Snitsky pulls Michaels up before finishing him off with a pumphandle slam. 1-2-3. Here is Your Winner: SNITSKY. Slightly longer than last week’s effort. A DUD match but it served its purpose for giving Snitsky somewhat of a background push. Having short matches helps him for now unlike in ECW when he was being forced down our throats in longer matches. Post match Snitsky stares at the ring as he backs up the ramp.

Lance Cade, Trevor Murdoch, Charlie Haas & Shelton Benjamin vs The Highlanders, Paul London & Brian Kendrick
This should be good. The World Tag Team Champions come out first and pose with their belts before their partners make their way out with a new titantron/entrance video. Hacksaw had one too earlier. The Highlanders receive a piped in pop while Londrick receive a genuine one. Grisham informs us of a producer’s note saying this is the first eight man tag on Heat in seven years. I don’t remember who was in the last one. Anyone that does feel free to drop me a line. Cade and Kendrick exchange hammerlocks. Kendrick applies a side headlock, dodges Cade off the ropes, Cade comes back with a hiptoss for a nearfall. Cade applies a headlock before running into a dropkick. Murdoch charges in and Kendrick meets him with a dropkick too. Cade and Murdoch receive several Kendrick armdrags. London lands a Mushroom stomp onto Murdoch’s arm from the top rope before stalking and landing a high kick to Murdoch’s chest. London grabs an arm, Murdoch counters with an Irish whip. London floats over a charge, Murdoch hits the corner, London ducks a swing then blindly leaps off the second rope catching Murdoch with a cross body for a nearfall. Murdoch sends London off the ropes and shoves him down. Haas tags in, lands some shots, sends London off the ropes, Haas attempts a backbodydrop, London jumps over him before delivering an armdrag. Rory tags in hitting a falling headbutt onto the arm from the top rope before wrenching away. Kendrick tags back in delivering a forearm to Haas’ arm from the top rope. Kendrick wrenches the arm, Haas forces Kendrick to the heel corner to deliver shoulder thrusts and a punch. Kendrick elbows Shelton off the apron then punches at Haas. Haas throws Kendrick over the top rope, Kendrick skins the cat back in but Haas hooks the legs and holds Kendrick in place for a Shelton leapfrog spike across the back. During all this Cade and Murdoch tie up the referee to allow the double team. Heat cuts away for commercials. We return to see Kendrick fight out of a Shelton rear naked choke. Shelton hoists Kendrick in the air who attempts a dropkick but doesn’t connect (botched spot). Shelton staggers a little before Murdoch blind tags in. After a brief argument Murdoch drops a forearm then reminds Shelton to remember to play by the rules. Murdoch goes for a slam, Kendrick slips behind nails a dropkick and goes to an unmanned corner. Cade tags in and charges into Kendrick’s feet. Shelton tags in to stomp on Kendrick before reeling him in for a short arm clothesline. Kendrick tries to fight back but Shelton cuts him off with punches. Haas tags in, Haas drives knees into the chest, works over Kendrick in the corner with punches then Irish whips him. Haas runs into an instinctive backelbow but recovers to catch Kendrick in a release belly-to-belly overthrow suplex. London breaks up a cover at two with a double foot stomp on Haas’ back. Haas front facelocks Kendrick as Cade tags in and takes over with a backbreaker followed by three consecutive nearfalls. Cade lifts Kendrick onto the second rope. Kendrick sends him away with headbutts, Cade prevents an aerial assault with a punch before hooking Kendrick’s head under his arm and bringing him off the second rope with a modified powerslam for a nearfall. Cade hooks an arm as Haas tags in to drop a knee and score two consecutive nearfalls of his own. Haas facelocks Kendrick as Shelton tags in and punches the gut. Shelton desperately hooks a leg as Kendrick tries to squirm to his own corner. Kendrick uses his other leg to send Shelton into knocking London off the apron. Rory takes the opportunity to punch Shelton before Kendrick nails an enziguiri kick. Both men manage to tag out. Robbie ducks Murdoch’s attacks and rallies with an axehandle sledge, shove, dropkick, boot to the gut and scorpion deathdrop. Cade breaks up a cover with a double axehandle prompting the action to break down with everyone joining in. London leaps in taking Cade down with a high kick. London dodges both Shelton and Haas before taking them both out with single leg high kicks. As Haas rolls to the outside, London forearms Shelton through the ropes. London lands a corkscrew pescado on Shelton as Kendrick nails Haas with a somersault dive off the apron. Back inside Robbie hits a high flapjack on Murdoch. The Highlanders fire up, Rory tags in, Robbie assists his partner with a top rope rocket launcher splash but Murdoch sits up. As Rory crashes and burns, Cade yanks Robbie off the ring apron then forearms him before tossing him back inside where he hits the referee. As the referee rolls Robbie out Cade and Murdoch hit Rory with the high low. Kendrick’s diving save attempt is too late as Murdoch covers and gets the 1-2-3. Here Are Your Winners: LANCE CADE, TREVOR MURDOCH, CHARLIE HAAS & SHELTON BENJAMIN. Good match. Post match sees the camera focus on Cade and Murdoch who celebrate with their belts before getting their hands raised on the ramp in unison with their tag partners. The faces look on crestfallen in the ring.

Grisham thanks us for watching to end the show.

Best Match: The Main Event.
Worst Match: William Regal vs Hacksaw Jim Duggan for the outcome.
Verdict: Thumbs in the middle. The Main Event was given some time so it erases some of the badness from the first part of the show.

So that wraps up another week. I’ll be back next weekend albeit a lot earlier in the day with the next edition of Heat as my work pattern has changed. Until then have a good week and I’ll catch you later. Shaun.

– John Morrison will return to WWE television on the ECW brand next week. The biggest question surrounding his return will be whether or not he will get the ECW Championship back from CM Punk. Before his suspension, original plans called for Morrison to have a long-term title reign, however, Punk was given the title when there was no other option. Paul Heyman had suggested that the company put the strap on CM Punk before last year’s December to Dismember pay-per-view; however, Vince McMahon referred to Punk as a “string bean” and said that no one would believe it.

– Speaking of returning talent, there is a good chance that Edge will be returning to WWE television very soon. One source reports that if he is not back by No Mercy he will be at Survivor Series in November at the latest.

A look at Formula 1’s completed class of 2021

February 9, 2021 | News | No Comments

Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes have finally added the last piece to the puzzle representing Formula 1’s class of 2021. So let’s have a look at the completed grid and the raft of driver changes for this season.

Remarkably, only three teams – Mercedes, Williams and Alfa Romeo – will head into the 2021 season with an unchanged driver line-up, while every other outfit has seen a switch, with two teams – Racing Point and Renault – also undergoing a name change.

Overall, this year’s field includes four world champions, three absolute beginners and a few driver pairings that promise exciting times for F1 fans.

At Mercedes, Hamilton will be chasing a historic eighth title, a milestone that would put him in a league of his own in the sport’s history books. But can Valtteri Bottas finally sustain his typically strong opening salvo and give the Brito a run for his money for the duration of the 2021 campaign?

The Brackley squad’s main opposition will once come from Red Bull Racing. While the Milton Keynes-based outfit remains centered around Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez has no intention of playing second fiddle. The Mexican will be on a mission at the outset this season to prove his worth relative to the blindingly fast Verstappen.

At McLaren, Daniel Ricciardo replaces Carlos Sainz as Lando Norris’ sidekick, but the Aussie has already warned that there will be no “comedy show” at Woking despite both drivers’ facetious personalities. The Aussie means business and will represent an interesting benchmark for his young teammate.

Speaking of benchmarks, Lance Stroll will measure up against four-time world champion Sebastian Vettel at the re-branded Aston Martin F1 team. With each passing season, the Canadian appears to refine his talent and trend higher. How he will perform relative to Vettel – a man in search of a turnaround – is another one of F1’s exciting prospects.

But perhaps the most anticipated juxtaposition of talent is the association between Charles Leclerc and Carlos Sainz. The Spaniard has fulfilled a dream by passing through the golden gates of Maranello. But be careful what you wish for as Leclerc is now firmly entrenched at Ferrari.

Two-time world champion Fernando Alonso is back on the grid this season with Alpine, the 39-year-old giving it another go with a team that, on paper, won’t be fighting for race wins this year. But that doesn’t mean that Alonso or Esteban Ocon won’t be able to pull off a stunner if circumstances permit.

AlphaTauri’s Pierre Gasly was admittedly disappointed to have not been given a second shot at Red Bull following Alex Albon’s demise. But the Frenchman is determined to uphold his 2020 momentum, a task he’ll undertake while also fending off his new rookie teammate, the mercurial and highly rated Yuki Tsunoda.
