Could Kona 2019 be David McNamee’s year?

March 13, 2021 | News | No Comments

Just when David McNamee thought he’d shaken off the dark horse tag for Kona, Alistair Brownlee decides to show up and steal the spotlight. Not that the Scot minds. Despite two third places in Hawaii and an ability to run a marathon in the heat that’s only surpassed by reigning champion Patrick Lange, his demeanour doesn’t change. McNamee just goes about his business and, come October, works his way through the field and onto the podium.

Can Lucy Charles-Barclay win Kona 2019?
What are Ali Brownlee’s chances at this year’s Ironman world Championships?

His success on the Big Island has come as little surprise to two former coaches. “Dave was always somebody who could recover well between sessions and was looking to do more,” says Malcolm Brown, who coached McNamee in Leeds during his ITU days. “To win at ITU level, you really had to commit from the B of the bang, but Dave
wanted to measure his energy expenditure over the race, which I thought was potentially a massive asset at long distance.”

Joel Filliol, McNamee’s coach when he first stepped up to long-course racing in 2015, concurs. “He has a remarkable ability to focus and work consistently for long periods on his own, which lends itself to Ironman-specific training. He’s also physically robust and his steady rhythm – that threshold diesel pace – is perfect for Ironman. Taking the next step is possible. It’s about being closer to the front, off the bike, which is no secret.”

Not least to McNamee himself, and it’s partly why, away from the cameras that follow stronger cyclists such as Australia’s Cameron Wurf and Germany Jan Frodeno at the front of the race, the 31-year-old also retains such a low profile.

RUN TO THE PODIUM

In Ironman South Africa this year McNamee lost 29mins on the bike to eventual champion Ben Hoffman; in Challenge Roth – albeit after suffering a puncture – it was 18mins to winner Andreas Dreitz. The flipside is that both times he ran 2:41hr marathons, a similar pattern to the last two Ironman world champs, where he’s run from outside the top 10 to the podium.

“Ironman South Africa was a bad start to the year, but at least that was me qualified for Hawaii,” he says. “In Roth, the puncture happened 90km into the race. I ride tubeless and the hole sealed eventually, but I lost too much pressure and rode 25-30km on 25psi.”

“The focus now is on bike strength, including gym work, where I’ve been a bit lax in the past. Raising FTP is good, but I need sheer leg strength at the end of an Ironman race. When I’m tired, the cadence drops. I can get away with it at 70.3, but not Ironman. I ride about 95rpm, but keeping it at that level throughout is difficult, especially in Hawaii when my heart rate is already high. In the past few years the cadence has fallen on the way home to 80-85, and that’s when the watts drop off.”

As for his rivals? “Patrick [Lange] rode very strong in Hawaii last year – people overlook that. He’ll run low 2:40s no matter what. I feel like I’m in shape to run 2:42-2:43, so it’s about focusing to stay in the top 10 on bike.

“Jan [Frodeno] changes the race a little because he’s a very strong rider and Seb [Kienle] will be a much bigger threat than he has been in the past couple of seasons. Alistair [Brownlee] has won two Olympic golds, but it’s a very different sport. I think Javier [Gomez] realised that last year. I’m sure he’ll be going to try and win.
After all, you don’t win two Olympic golds and turn up
just to complete.”

As Brown suggests, McNamee sees his own strength as his ability to recover quickly, even within the race. “Because I’m less of a strength athlete, but more aerobically conditioned, it allows me to go over my limit at times. Performance-wise if I could put myself in a position that after the bike I could win, I’d see that as a success. That would open the possibility of going back for the next six-seven years and having a chance of taking it.

In an apparent setback for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, exit polls showed the longtime Israeli leader falling short of securing a parliamentary majority with his hard-line allies in Tuesday’s election. The results posted by Israel’s three major TV stations indicated his political future could be in doubt.

The three stations all showed challenger Benny Gantz’s centrist Blue and White party slightly ahead of Netanyahu’s Likud party. However, neither party controls a majority in the 120-seat parliament without the support of Avigdor Lieberman, who heads the midsize Yisrael Beitenu party.Israeli exit polls are often imprecise and the final results, expected Wednesday, could shift in Netanyahu’s favor. But three stations all forecast similar scenarios.
Netanyahu had sought to secure a majority with his allies to secure immunity from an expected indictment on corruption charges. The results raise the likelihood of a unity government among the three parties, but it’s unclear what part Netanyahu could take in that. The longest-serving leader in Israeli history was seeking a fourth consecutive term in office and fifth overall. But he faced a stiff challenge from Gantz.Throughout an abbreviated, but alarmist campaign characterized by mudslinging and slogans condemned as racist, Netanyahu had tried to portray himself as a seasoned statesman who is uniquely qualified to lead the country through challenging times. Gantz tried to paint Netanyahu as divisive and scandal-plagued, offering himself as a calming influence and honest alternative. After casting his ballot in Jerusalem, Netanyahu predicted the vote would be “very close.” Throughout the day, he frantically begged supporters to vote.”It’s not in the bag. But if you go (vote), we will win,” Netanyahu blared through a megaphone to shoppers at a Jerusalem market after stopping at other Likud strongholds in the city.Voting in his hometown of Rosh Haayin in central Israel, Gantz urged all Israelis to hope. “We will bring hope, we will bring change, without corruption, without extremism,” he said. The election marks their second showdown of the year after drawing even in the previous one in April.Attention will now focus on Israel’s president, Reuven Rivlin, who is to choose the candidate he believes has the best chance of forming a stable coalition. Rivlin is to consult with all parties in the coming days before making his decision.

Netanyahu is desperate to secure a narrow 61-seat majority in parliament with his hard-line religious and nationalist allies, who are expected to approve legislation that would grant him immunity from prosecution.Israel’s attorney general has recommended pressing criminal charges against Netanyahu in three separate corruption cases, pending a long-delayed pre-trial hearing scheduled next month. Without immunity, Netanyahu would be under heavy pressure to step aside. With his career on the line, Netanyahu has campaigned furiously and taken a late hard turn to the right in hopes of rallying his nationalist base.Heavier turnout by Arab voters, many of whom stayed home in April, could hurt Netanyahu. After casting his ballot, the leader of the main Arab faction in parliament, Ayman Odeh, said Netanyahu was “obsessive” in his incitement toward Arabs. He said the answer was that his constituents “must be first-class voters on the way to becoming first-class citizens.”Facebook on Tuesday punished Netanyahu’s page for the second time during the campaign, briefly suspending his automated chat function after it illegally published an opinion poll in the days before the election. By early evening, the chat page was working again. Last week, the account was suspended for 24 hours after a post claimed that Arabs want to “annihilate all of us.”The page and the chatbot were posting aggressively Tuesday, with numerous videos of Netanyahu pleading with voters to turn out.Turnout emerged as a key element for this election day, which is a national holiday aimed at encouraging participation. In April, turnout was about 69%, slightly below the 72% figure in a 2015 election.

As of 4 p.m., Israel’s central election committee said 44.3% of eligible voters had cast their ballots. It marked a slight increase over the figure at the same time in April.

Chilean President Sebastián Piñera on Saturday announced the repeal of a subway fare hike that had prompted violent student protests less than a day after he declared a state of emergency amid rioting and commuter chaos in the capital. It was unclear if the rollback would end the demonstrations and rioting.

Soldiers patrolled the streets in Santiago for the first time since the military dictatorship of General Augusto Pinochet ended in 1990, summoned to keep order following protests over a rise in subway fares from the equivalent $1.12 to $1.16. Subway service had been suspended in the capital since late Friday.”I have heard with humility the voice of my compatriots,” Piñera said before announcing that “we are going to suspend” the fare hike.
The protest by students began on Monday when hundreds of young people mobbed several metro stations in Santiago, jumping over or dipping under turnstiles in a fare-dodging protest against the 4% increase in fares.By the end of the week, demonstrations had turned violent with thousands of students burning subway stations and damaging dozens of others and some set fire to a high-rise energy company building. Officials reported 156 police officers and 11 civilians injured and more than 300 people arrested.Authorities said that in all, 78 stations along with infrastructure and equipment had been damaged in a system that has long been a point of pride for Chileans. The conservative Piñera vowed that those responsible for the violence “are going to pay for their deeds.”Near midnight, Chile’s conservative president declared a state of emergency in affected areas, allowing authorities to restrict rights to assembly and movement. Soldiers were deployed in the streets.Despite the presence of soldiers and police, thousands of Chileans continued protesting including in cities outside Santiago, not only against public transit fare hikes, but the price of electricity, water and medicines.Police administered tear gas, while protesters had set up barricades and looted businesses.

Despite Piñera’s lifting of the fare hike, subway and public transportation services remained suspended late Saturday and the state of emergency was still in place. Authorities imposed a 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. local time curfew for Santiago.

Seoul, South Korea — North Korea confirmed Friday it conducted its third test-firing of a new “super-large” multiple rocket launcher it says expands its ability to destroy enemy targets in surprise attacks.

The latest launches extended a months-long streak of weapons displays by the North, which continues to use a standstill in nuclear negotiations to advance its military capabilities while pressuring Washington for concessions.Pyongyang’s official Korean Central News Agency described the tests a day after the South Korean and Japanese militaries said they detected two projectiles launched from an area near the North Korean capital traveling more than 200 miles cross-country before landing in waters off the North’s eastern coast.
Experts say the North could continue to ramp up weapons demonstrations ahead of an end-of-year deadline set by leader Kim Jong Un for the U.S. to offer mutually acceptable terms to salvage fragile diplomacy strained by disagreements over exchanging sanctions relief and disarmament steps.Thursday’s launches followed statements of displeasure by top North Korean officials over the slow pace of nuclear negotiations with the United States and demands that the Trump administration ease crippling sanctions and pressure on their country.KCNA said Kim expressed satisfaction over what North Korea described as a successful test of its new rocket artillery system, but it wasn’t clear whether the leader observed the launches on-site. The North previously tested the system in August and September. The latest test verified the “perfection” of the system’s continuous firing ability that enables it to “totally destroy” enemy targets with “super power,” the agency said.Kim Eun-han, spokesman of Seoul’s Unification Ministry, said South Korea has “strong concern” over the North’s weapons activity, but avoided a straightforward answer when asked about the possible impact on inter-Korean dialogue.Chung Eui-yong, the presidential national security director, downplayed the threat posed by Pyongyang’s new weapons during a parliamentary hearing while also mentioning South Korea’s missile defense systems.”We’re also test-firing missiles, no less than North Korea does,” The Reuters news agency quoted him as saing. “Our missile defense and intercept capabilities are absolutely superior to theirs.”Earlier this month, the North test-fired an underwater-launched ballistic missile for the first time in three years. The North has also tested new short-range ballistic missile and rocket artillery systems in recent months in what experts saw as an effort to advance its military capabilities and increase its bargaining power.

Negotiations have faltered after the collapse of a February summit between Kim Jong Un and President Trump in Hanoi, Vietnam, where the U.S. rejected North Korean demands for broad sanctions relief in exchange for piecemeal progress toward partially surrendering its nuclear capabilities.Washington and Pyongyang resumed working-level discussion in Sweden earlier this month, but the meeting broke down amid acrimony with the North Koreans calling the talks “sickening” and accusing the Americans of maintaining an “old stance and attitude.”

Renault F1 engine chief Remi Taffin believes that the impending engine development freeze will be a good thing for the sport and for the Alpine F1 team.

All of the sport’s power unit suppliers agreed the move as a cost cutting measure, and to allow Red Bull and AlphaTauri to continue using legacy Honda engines when the Japanese manufacturer bows out at the end of 2021.

That’s forced the other engine suppliers to adjust their strategic approach to development over the next few seasons – and Taffin says that it may end up benefitting his team.

He said they would be bringing forward developments originally planned for 2023 to beat the introduction of the freeze next year. Among the planned changes are adopting a split turbo and compressor approach in the style of Mercedes.

“The ’21 engine was not actually driven by what’s happening in ’22 or ’23,” Taffin explained.

“The decision we have made back in 2020 was driven by the fact that we would actually put everything on ’22, having in mind that we would have another revolution in ’23.

“We could make the best out of the new baseline we had for ’22, which is now not the case anymore, because we haven’t got ’23.

“But actually we’re quite happy,” he insisted. “We can have actually a big push for ’22, so we are even pushing further forwards some of the evolution we had for ’23 into ’22.

©Alpine.

“It’s been a different game,” he acknowledged. “But all-in-all, if we look at the long game I think that’s not a bad decision we had a year ago.”

Engine development was also frozen in 2020 because of the coronavirus pandemic, with teams having to catch up with their planned changes during the winter once the season was over.

“We implemented the modifications we forecast for last year mid-season into this year,” Taffin confirmed. “It’s more of an evolution that we would have in season at races rather than over winter.

“Obviously we had then put our focus on ’22, but at the same time over the winter we did the validation of our ’21 engine,” he continued. “We’re basically set up for race one.

“I’m hoping that what we’ve done is enough to preserve the reliability we got last year, which gave us a good baseline and obviously a bit more performance from the evolution I just mentioned.”

The FIA has announced that Pirelli’s exclusive contract to supply tyres to teams on the Formula 1 grid has been extended through 2024, with the decision confirmed by the World Motorsports Council on Friday.

Pirelli has been the sport’s exclusive tyre supplier since 2011. Tyre suppliers have in the past received three-year contracts, but Pirelli were handed a four-year deal covering 2020 to 2023 when it was last renewed in order to allow additional time to develop new 18-inch tyres.

The official announcement stated that one-year extension was in recognition of the unforeseen hard work and disruption caused by the coronavirus epidemic, which has forced the sport to delay the introduction of those new tyre regulations from 2021 to 2022.

  • Read also: Pirelli unveils 18-inch test schedule for 2021

“The World Council has agreed to grant a one-year extension to the existing exclusive tyre supply contract with Pirelli to reflect the original intention of the 2018 tyre tender.

“{It will] remain within the overall technical framework in the best interests of all relevant stakeholders,” the statement added.

“The COVID-19 pandemic obliged the FIA and F1 to implement emergency measures that included the cancellation of tyre development tests last year and the postponement of planned new technical regulations – which included 18-inch tyres – from 2021 to 2022.

“As a result, 13-inch tyres will be used during the 2021 season, with a move to 18-inch tyres in 2022.”

Pirelli has already resumed testing of the new 18-inch tyres, beginning with a three-day pre-season session with Ferrari at Spain’s Jerez circuit last week.

The decision to extend Pirelli’s contract was welcomed by new F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali.

“The pandemic caused disruption across the world and F1 was not immune from that,” he explained. “We therefore took the necessary measures last year to defer the regulations by one year to 2022.

“We are very proud of our partnership with Pirelli and grateful to them for their constructive approach to this timing change,” he continued. “Pirelli are very conscious of the strategic role that the tyres have in F1.

“We know that they are working very hard to make sure that their products will represent the best balance between performance and durability in the new technical context.”

FIA president Jean Todt added: “I want to thank F1 and Pirelli for their collaboration, flexibility and commitment to our sport during this most difficult period.

“COVID-19 has presented us with significant challenges across all aspects of our businesses, but by working together in a sensible, pragmatic way, we have been able to ensure that the long-term stability and strength of F1 remains undiminished.

“The shift to 18-inch wheels and tyres will certainly provide a more exciting image for F1 cars,” he added. “But it has also presented a significant technical challenge requiring a lot of investment and development on behalf of Pirelli as they continue to deliver tyres that will perform at the highest level.

“In light of this, and the necessary postponement of the new regulations as a result of the pandemic, it is only logical to extend the supply of tyres accordingly.”

“We’re obviously pleased to have reached this agreement that will extend our presence at the pinnacle of world motorsport until 2024,” Pirelli CEO Marco Tronchetti Provera responded.

“Pirelli has been alongside Formula 1 for more than 70 years, since the very first race in 1950,” he continued.

“The company continues to invest in the highest technological levels of research and development, as shown by the introduction of 18-inch tyres from next year.

“Motorsport forms part of our DNA and Formula 1 represents an open-air laboratory that allows us to apply the know-how gained on track into our road car tyres.”

Aston Martin team boss Otmar Szafnauer says his team will be listening to all of Sebastian Vettel’s “wants and needs” this year in order to get the best out of the four-time world champion.

Vettel’s move to Aston Martin from Ferrari opens a new chapter for the German driver, one in which the 33-year-old will be seeking a turn around of his fortunes after a difficult past two years spent with the Scuderia, practically in the shadow of teammate Charles Leclerc.

Szafnauer reiterated his belief that Aston Martin can offer a new home to Vettel and a fresh environment in which the 53-time Grand Prix winner can regain his composure and fight at the front of the grid.

  • Team launch gallery: Aston Martin AMR21

“I’ve always said, and will continue to say so, at 33 years old you don’t forget how to drive a Formula 1 car fast,” Szafnauer told the media on Wednesday following the team’s 2021 launch.

“So it’s got to be other things. And we will work tirelessly to make sure that we don’t introduce those things, and actually alleviate them.

“An arm around the shoulder means that everybody’s listening to his wants and his needs. And we’ll work hard to make sure the car is to his liking and the setup is like he wants it.

“We’ve got two drivers to look after. And if we treat them equally, which in the past we’ve been really good at doing and I anticipate we’ll do that in the future as well, I think that’s all it takes with Seb.

“And then if he doesn’t overdrive the car, drives like he can, and we will definitely get the best out of him.”

Vettel’s presence at Aston Martin will require teammate Lance Stroll to “work hard” to rise to the challenge provided by his new benchmark. But Szafnauer is confident that the young Candian, who embarks on his fifth year of F1, can fulfill expectations.

“To beat Sebastian Vettel, you’re gonna have to work hard,” said Szafnauer. “Sebastian’s got a great work ethic. And we’re working really hard to make sure that Sebastian feels comfortable at our team, and we get him back up to his best. So it’ll be very interesting.

“Does [Lance] have the wherewithal to do it? Absolutely.

“But, like I said, it’s going to take a lot of hard work. And I would imagine Sebastian is going to also try to beat his teammate.”

The Mercedes team’s Twitter account released on Saturday afternoon a sneak peek at the all-new livery of its 2021 charger, the W12.

The rendering appears to show the new car’s base scheme, with a fade from black to silver and a turquoise swoosh, while the W12’s airbox features a red space likely devoted to team partner – and 33% new shareholder – Ineos.

According to Mercedes, the “amazing” livery was created by Daimler chief design officer Gorden Wagener who admitted the leak wasn’t “showing everything.”

“One very crucial part is not shown yet, so you need to stay tuned for the reveal,” Wagener said.

So tune in on Tuesday, March 2, when Mercedes pulls the covers off the W12 that may power Sir Lewis Hamilton to a record eighth world title this year.
