Blustery conditions and ocean swells forced organisers to move the swim and shorten the course to 1,200 meters, with an additional 750 meters to run to transition. The 90-kilometer cycle loop presented competitors with a tailwind out and a headwind of up to 20 miles per hour coming back in. three circuits of a seven-kilometer loop on unshaded jog paths was the final hurdle.

Frodeno led from the swim and finished in a time of 3 hours, 34 minutes, 48 seconds.

“It was really tough out there, but this course is very fast,” he said. “I had a real dream of a day, one of those days you can just push with the pace the whole day. It was a perfect day for me.”

Ryf faced a little more challenge to her lead on the women’s side. Swiss compatriot Caroline Steffen was nipping at her heels from the swim and took the early lead on the bike. However Ryf came back at her in the final third of the ride to get onto the run two minutes ahead of Steffen. She held that lead with a steady run, finishing in 4 hours, 1 minute, 9 seconds.

“I’m really happy actually, it’s a great start,” She said. “Big compliment to Caroline. I think she did really good in the first 50km on the bike. She really pushed the pace and she was really hurting me and then I tried to wait a bit.

“I started to hurt more, then in the last 40km I wanted to see where my legs were and decided to push a little bit harder. Every time I wanted to slow down I pushed harder, that’s pretty much the tactic. With the wind and the carpet on the floor the run felt quite slow, but I’m really happy.

“I’m 37 years of age and I can still out-sprint the young ones. I’m quite happy with that.”

The half-distance triathlon will take place on 23 July in the stunning ‘Bay of Whales’ and the athletes will swim 1.9km in an untouched crystal clear glacial lake left by the glacial melt of the Ice Age 10,000 years ago.

The one loop 90km bike race with rolling hills and short climbs in the old main road is one the most iconic bike routes in Iceland, while a beautiful country road with long hills will be the scene for the 21.1 km run course.

“The idea started with a vision of a long course race with an open water swim since the races in Iceland have almost all been in pools due to cold water,” said Vidar Bragi Thorsteinsson, the founder of the race.

“Our race has grown successfully from the first races and now we are extremely proud of being selected to the Challenge Family “.

“Iceland is one of those magical countries and its beauty is out of this world,” said ChallengeFamily CEO, Zibi Szlufcik.

Challenge Family’s commitment to providing iconic races in iconic destinations that stand apart in terms of quality makes Iceland the perfect Challenge race destination and Vidar and his team the perfect partners. We are very much looking forward to introducing more people to this spectacular part of the world.”

The study into changes in running biomechanics in runners aged 20 to 60 found stride length and running speed, two important markers of performance, decreased 15% over the 40 years.

However the studies found only ankle calf muscles had reduced function, while hip and knee muscles actually remained unchanged.

This could suggest that strength or power training of the calf muscles may be a way to slow reductions in running biomechanics with age.

The yearly rate of decline in calf muscle function, stride length and running speed could be used to track an individual’s current performance level or used as targets for making improvements by coaches, medical personnel, or runners.

The scientists captured motion and force data from experienced healthy runners (male, 54%). Kinematics, ground reaction forces (GRF), and lower limb joint torques and powers were then correlated with age using Pearson product–moment correlations and linear regression.

These results are novel, say the researchers because they show “the rate of decline in running biomechanics on a per-year basis and that mechanical reductions at the ankle but not at the hip or knee were correlated with age, confirming a previous observation of biomechanical plasticity with age showing reduced ankle but not hip function in gait.”

The elite transition is located directly on the Long Walk. Both run sections take the athletes on an out and back route towards Windsor Castle along the Long Walk. The first run comprises of two laps, with the second run completed over one lap, providing spectators with the chance to follow the action closely up and down the tree lined route.

The bike route will see athletes race up to the Copper Horse, turning right and complete an anti-clockwise loop before returning back towards the Copper Horse. Elite athletes will complete four laps around Snow Hill before turning right and heading back in to transition.

His endurance challenge kicked off in Cardiff on Monday before heading to Belfast on Tuesday. Tomorrow he is in Sheffield before finishing in Norwich and so far he has raised well over £100,000 for Sport Relief (you can donate here)

“British Triathlon would like to wish Greg James good luck in his triathlon challenge,” chief executive Jack Buckner, said. “Completing five triathlons in five cities, in five days, is really a huge challenge, not just because of the distances and logistics involved, but also the winter weather. We hope that his swimming, cycling and running exploits help raise a lot of money for Sport Relief.”

Here are some images from day 1-3 of his great challenge…

The new shock-absorbing helmet technology, called Mitigatium, effectively dissipates the energy from impact.

“Current bicycle helmets offer protection to the skull and the brain by dissipating energy through fracture of the helmets in some collisions, but that may be their only energy dissipating mechanism,” said Ellen Arruda, professor of mechanical engineering and biomedical engineering.

“The composite technology we developed can be used to better protect the brain in collisions in which the helmet doesn’t fracture, without sacrificing their existing energy dissipating mechanism. We believe this technology can be used to better protect the brain in all types of helmets.”

When a bike helmet breaks, it’s absorbing what’s called “impulse” – a secondary effect of an initial force. Impulse, which gives objects momentum, is what transmits kinetic energy through a system. It takes into account not just force, but also how long that force was applied. To calculate impulse, you multiply the average force by the length of time it was exerted on the subject.

For head protection to be most effective researchers say it has to block impulse.

“Everyone is focused on the force of an impact and only the force,” Arruda said. “But they’ve found that when they measure peak force on the surface of the skull, they can’t correlate that with brain injury. The reason is that force is only part of the story.”

Scientists and doctors don’t fully understand how a blow to the head translates to brain injury, but the U-M researchers say impulse is a big factor. Arruda and her colleagues have demonstrated this.

They’ve taken one of the first close looks at the mechanical features of impacts and blasts and how helmets and other armor might be designed to do a better job protecting sensitive structures. To do that, they built two-dimensional mock cross-sections of materials that stood in for the brain and skull in various helmet shells. Then they use a table-top collision simulator to test the different samples. They compared how much energy was transmitted through to the brain-type layer in their own helmet system and the status quo. They used a high-speed camera to help them observe how the brain model deformed in both systems

In their experiments, the conventional football helmet model did little to block impulse, however their prototype reduced impulse to just 20% of what got through to the brain model in the conventional helmet.

The prototype helmet is made up of three materials; the first layer is similar to the hard polycarbonate that’s the shell of present-day helmets. The second is a flexible plastic and the third, ‘visco-elastic’, layer has the consistency of dried tar.

“Together these substances reflect most of the initial shock wave from a collision – most of the initial force. They also do something else unique and important: They convert the frequency of that incoming pressure wave to a frequency that the next layer can, in essence, grab ahold of and dissipate by vibrating. This third ‘visco-elastic’ layer has the consistency of dried tar.”

“We’ve come up with a totally new concept of how to make efficient impact-mitigating structures that could dissipate energy without being damaged,”said Michael Thouless, the Janine Johnson Weins Professor of Engineering in mechanical engineering and materials science and engineering.

“And we used basic concepts of mechanics to develop a fundamental understanding of how to protect delicate structures such as the brain.”
