WWE Starrcade Success

According to reports by PWInsider.com, WWE Starrcade was a tremendous success last night.

The report suggests that the show did a monster house and was the best in a long time for the WWE market and the current expectation is that WWE will bring the event back next year.

WWE Raw 25th Anniversary Plans

Within the same report, it appears that WWE has been getting many former WWE stars to film messages for the WWE Raw 25th anniversary show which are expected to be involved in the broadcast.

NXT Taping News

WWE will be taping the next set of NXT shows at Full Sail this Wednesday, the same day that the latest NXT episode will air on the WWE Network.

Obviously, the episodes taped will not be edited in time to be used this week, so expect NXT to be made up of footage that was taped during NXT’s live event the day before NXT Takeover: War Games.

As noted, WWE has apparently scrapped the planned main event for the Royal Rumble PPV, however there has been conflicting information surrounding the match plans.

One report suggested Brock Lesnar defending his Universal Title against Finn Balor was the originally planned Royal Rumble match, however that idea was scrapped following Survivor Series and Lesnar’s plans remain up in the air.

Another report suggested Balor was never in the mix to face Lesnar at Royal Rumble, as Vince McMahon perceives Balor to be bland when he’s not playing the Demon character.

In an update on Brock Lesnar’s Royal Rumble plans, The Wrestling Observer Newsletter is reporting WWE might have Lesnar wrestle some type of non-title match at the PPV.

The reason for the non-title match is because there are few top stars Lesnar can work with at Royal Rumble, as Vince does not want Lesnar vs Strowman, and the plans if for Lesnar vs Roman Reigns to take place at WrestleMania. With Samoa Joe beginning a feud with Roman Reigns on Raw this past Monday night, it appears he, along with Strowman, Balor and Reigns, are out of the running as possible Lesnar opponents at Royal Rumble.

As we noted earlier this week, Lesnar will be making his return to WWE TV at Raw on December 18th.

As noted, WWE will be moving forward with a retooled version of the “Broken” character for Matt Hardy to use in WWE. Hardy will be known as “Woken Matt Hardy” as opposed to “Broken”, and Dave Meltzer noted on Wrestling Observer Radio that WWE wants to own the gimmick, which is why they are going with “Woken”. Should Matt Hardy successfully trademark his Impact “Broken” gimmick, he will own that name.

As seen on WWE Raw last night, a new #1 contender to Brock Lesnar’s WWE Universal Championship was supposed to be named following a Braun Strowman vs Kane main event.

The Strowman vs Kane match, however, ended in a double count out, so we still do not know who Brock Lesnar will be facing for the Title at WWE Royal Rumble next month.

According to Dave Meltzer of Wrestling Observer Radio, the current plan in WWE is for Brock Lesnar to defend the Universal Title in a Triple Threat match against both Braun Strowman and Kane.

The report adds there were several ideas pitched for Lesnar’s match at Royal Rumble, and as of this writing Vince McMahon has settled on the Triple Threat. As we noted after Raw last night, Lesnar will be returning to WWE TV on Raw next week to address his Title defense at the PPV next month.

After Raw was over last night, Braun Strowman did cut a backstage promo, which you can watch at this link, during which The Monster Among Men claimed nothing will stand in his way of Lesnar and the WWE Universal Title, so it certainly appears WWE is hyping Strowman remains on the path to a title match at Royal Rumble.

As noted, El Rey Network has given the greenlight to a fourth season of Lucha Underground, after the future of the show was in question.

According to F4WOnline.com, talents who are currently contracted to Lucha Underground have been told to cancel any and all scheduled independent bookings beginning in mid-February. This could be a forecast that LU plans to begin season four around that time.

If the above timeframe is indeed when Lucha Underground plans to tape TV, it could throw some conflicts to talent who were hoping to work the big New Japan Pro Wrestling tour also taking place in February. The current plan in LU is to begin the tapings on February 16th, and depending on how long the tapings last, it could force some talents to pull out of big NJPW bookings.

In related news, we noted back in November that El Rey Network, which airs Lucha Underground, had been pulled from Verizon Fios, however at the end of last month a deal was reached to bring back the Univision channels, meaning El Rey Network will be available to Fios customers when Lucha Underground season four debuts.

There are a ton of different rumors swirling around the internet this evening about a possible return for Becky Lynch, who has been off television selling a storyline “injury” at the hands of the Riott Squad.

In reality, Becky has been filming for the latest incarnation of WWE Studios film series “The Marine” alongside The Miz, and as we reported last week, the two have wrapped their scenes and are expected back soon. As far as the rumors going around, at this point take them with a grain of salt as nothing has been officially confirmed as of yet. Several people claimed to have seen the former women’s champion in Chicago, the host city for tonight’s Smackdown.

As noted, former Impact Wrestling lead television Director and Producer Dave Sahadi, was recently released, and PWInsider.com is reporting former TNA Director Michael Vedder has returned to the company to replace Sahadi.

Bill Behrens, who represents numerous wrestlers on the independent scene, will be working with Impact Wrestling going forward to assist in getting talents booked for third-party events.

As noted, one of Impact Wrestling’s goals for next year is to rebuild its relationship with New Japan Pro Wrestling. As seen in recent months, Impact has been doing more business with Japan, as they recently held Pro Wrestling NOAH talent exchanges.

With regards to James Storm, we reported following the Impact tapings in Ottawa that he finished up with Impact at the tapings, and his contract will expire after the new year. Impact taped James Storm vs. Dan Lambert for the first episode of Impact Wrestling in 2018, with the idea that the loser of the match will leave Impact. This should be Impact’s way of writing James Storm off TV. As noted, Storm is the latest in a wave of Impact talents who have left the company due to officials cutting out high money, guaranteed talent deals.
