Speaking following his second win as Lyon boss at home to Lille (1-0) on Sunday evening, Laurent Blanc praised striker Alexandre Lacazette – whose 74th minute finished put Les Gones ahead and proved the decisive touch in the win, as trasncribed by L’Équipe:

“Put the balls in the box and you will see that Alex will score goals. He is a poacher. As long as there is movement in wide areas and crosses, he will score. In the first half, we couldn’t do it on the flanks. That was the problem. We had to bring in people who brought their freshness and let our strikers work up front. I had seen Lille play against Monaco (4-3). They played a great game. There is a physical intensity in this team. I watch a lot more L1. I see the intensity of the matches, I tell myself that it has evolved a lot. It is incredible to repeat the efforts at high intensity in such an exceptional way.”

A report recently confirmed that Houssem Aouar had not yet decided on his international future. There have been uncertainties around his representation at the international level for some time now, as the midfielder is eligible to play for Algeria and France at the same time.

Nevertheless, it appears as if the Lyon man is not sure of his intention. Ahead of OL’s Ligue 1 encounter against Marseille on Sunday, Aouar was asked about his international future. Refusing to address the matter, the player (as quoted by L’Équipe) said, “I want to talk about Marseille only.“

Born in Lyon, Aouar represented France at their U17 and U21 levels and also played an international friendly for France’s senior side against Ukraine in 2020.

But due to him being a descendant of Algerian descent, the 24-year-old holds an Algerian nationality and could also represent the North African nation. In 2019, Algerian national team head coach Djamel Belmadi even publicly stated that he would like to convince the midfielder to join his side.

According to an official announcement by the club, RC Lens have signed Ligue 2 side Paris FC defender Julien Le Cardinal on a deal running up to 2025. The move has cost the Ligue 1 side an estimated €2.3m plus €300,000 in bonuses.

Having agreed with the player for at least two weeks, RC Lens registered this Tuesday afternoon the arrival of the right-back from Paris FC (Ligue 2) who has passed his medical examination. The right back wanted by the Sang & Or has committed himself until at least June 2025. RC Lens made his arrival official in the evening.

Le Cardinal will have the month of December to get up to speed with Franck Haise’s side before Lens play Nice on 28th December – as players slowly return from World Cup duty due to elimination, such as fellow right-sided defender Przemyslaw Frankowski who he will compete with for a place in the Lens side, as Jimmy Cabot is out with an ACL injury.

Official: Angers sack Gérald Baticle

February 22, 2023 | News | No Comments

SCO Angers have announced that they have parted ways with manager Gérald Baticle, with the club currently rock-bottom of the Ligue 1.

Baticle was informed of the decision during a meeting with the club’s president, Saïd Chabane, on Wednesday. According to L’Équipe, the decision was taken after Chabane met and spoke with members of the dressing room, people close to him and even supporters in recent days.

It has been announced that Abdel Bouhazama will take charge of the club in the interim. Bouhazama was previously the manager of the youth centre.

Having arrived in the summer of 2021, Baticle kept the club in Ligue 1 last season. However, Angers have lost their last seven games, their last win coming against Nice on 18th September. The club are three points adrift from 19th-placed Strasbourg, and with four teams going down this season, Chabane was forced to act. It is the first time that Chabane has sacked a manager since taking over the club in 2011.

Links to Barcelona this summer will have startled more than a few outsiders, but a closer look shows that Mali captain Hamari Traoré’s form last season may well have warranted a prospective move to the Catalan giants.

Traoré has been a crucial part of Bruno Génésio’s attacking-minded set-up at Rennes. Having chipped in with three goals himself last year, on top of his ten assists, Traoré has proven to be a tireless operator on the right flank and is adept both defensively and going forward. The 30-year-old featured in virtually every game last term, barring an AFCON absence for the month of January – which coincided with a downturn in form for Rennes. The team would ultimately finish in a disappointing fourth place, having challenged for a Champions League spot during much of the season, but the right-back’s stock remained as high as ever.

The Mali international has continued that form into the new season, setting aside any potential disappointment over his lack of a summer move. There have been a few lapses – the red card against Fenerbahçe in an otherwise solid Europa League campaign comes to mind – but, this year, Traoré has looked just as important to a Rennes side now aiming to go one better.

The Breton team’s captain, whose contract, as it stands, expires at the end of the season, has been on the radars of clubs from across the continent for several years now. Paris Saint-Germain had an eye on him as far back as 2020, with more recent interest coming from the likes of Borussia Dortmund and Marseille. Formerly of Reims – where he first got a taste of Ligue 1 action – the defender made his first steps in European football at Paris FC before a two-year stint at Lierse in Belgium. It’s his time at Rennes, though, which has decidedly shaped his career. This is his sixth season at the Roazhon Park.

Traoré himself has indicated that a contract extension is not currently being discussed with the club, and it appears inevitable that links to a move will resurface in January. But, when he does leave, the 30-year-old will be doing so on more than favourable terms with a Breton fanbase who have had the pleasure of watching arguably Ligue 1’s finest right-back of recent seasons.

Stade Rennais Online report today that Joe Rodon’s season-long loan spell in Brittany from Tottenham Hotspur could be set to end early as a result of a lack of playing time due to the high competition in the defensive positions.

The Welshman had joined Rennes on a season-long loan deal with an option to make the move permanent at the end of the season.

The 25-year-old, who played in all of Wales’ World Cup games in Qatar, has managed nine Ligue 1 appearances and scored one goal. However, he has also seen his starting spot taken by Christopher Wooh since the start of October, and the former Swansea man has not started a game since then.

With Warmed Omari set to return from his long-term injury, Rodon is now expected to become the fourth-choice centre-back in Bruno Génésio’s set-up. Omari and Athur Theate were the defensive pair in Rennes’ friendly matches before the season’s resumption next week. Rennes are said to be looking into ending Rodon’s loan early, with the player himself not expected to be against a return to Spurs, where he is under contract until 2025.

Aston Villa prioritising Mattéo Guendouzi signing

February 20, 2023 | News | No Comments

Foot Mercato are reporting that Aston Villa have made signing Olympique de Marseille midfielder Mattéo Gunedouzi (23) their priority, and manager Unai Emery has already spoken to the player to convince him of the move.

Whilst Aston VIlla have yet to submit a concrete offer, there is a good chance that one will be formulated. According to Foot Mercato, Emery has recently spoken to Guendouzi, who formed part of Didier Deschamps’ France squad that reached the World Cup final in Qatar. There is reportedly a mutual admiration between the pair.

The Spanish manager has already once attempted to recruit Guendouzi, whose contract with Les Phocéens expires in 2025. In difficulty at Arsenal at the time, Emery tried to bring the midfielder to Villareal. Should an offer of around €30m be submitted for Guendouzi, Marseille would have to think twice about it, even though the club didn’t envisage letting their France international leave this winter.

Guendouzi is Aston Villa’s priority this January, and if he makes the move, he would be the second French midfielder to make the switch in just two transfer windows after Boubacar Kamara joined the club in the summer.

According to an official announcement by both Flamengo and Olympique de Marseille, Brazilian attacking midfielder Gerson has rejoined Flamengo. Fabrizio Romano reported several days ago that the attacker signed a deal which would keep him at the Brazilian club until 2026, with Marseille receiving around €20m including add-ons for the transfer.

Gerson moved to Marseille in the summer of 2021 for a reported €25m. During his first season at the Orange Vélodrome, the Brazilian was a mainstay in Marseille’s midfield, racking up 48 appearances in all competitions and scoring 11 goals in the process. However, since the arrival of Igor Tudor at the club, Gerson has not had consistent minutes both in Ligue 1 and Europe. Talks were reported between the Marseille, the player, and his former club Flamengo by sources contacted by Get French Football News in early November.

The Olympians still owed €5m from the original transfer, but with his return to Flamengo now completed the fee will be cancelled and the club will receive a total of €20m.

Houssem Aouar close to Algeria national team switch

February 16, 2023 | News | No Comments

According to L’Équipe, Lyon midfielder Houssem Aouar is close to switching his national team allegiance to Algeria in the next few weeks. Despite claims that the move has been finalised by the head of the Algerian football federation, nothing has yet been agreed between the federation and Aouar – who has already appeared for the France in friendly competition.

The Algerian football federation announced on national television that “Houssem Aouar has given us his agreement to join the Algerian National Team” via the remarks of Djahid Zefizef on TV 3. The federation boss also revealed that they are “also in discussions with Amine Gouiri, however nothing is decided yet.”

The player’s entourage however did say that discussions have been initiated but that no agreement has yet been reached – although Aouar reportedly intends to switch nationality to the Fennecs, especially since his prospects in the France team look increasingly unlikely following the 2022 World Cup.

Ruslan Malinovskyi makes first start for Marseille

February 15, 2023 | News | No Comments

Ruslan Malinovskyi will make his home debut for Marseille against Lorient this evening, having been called up for Igor Tudor’s starting XI – it will be the Ukrainian’s first start since joining the club. Malinovskyi joined from Serie A side Atalanta on a loan move with an obligation to buy the player set at €10m with €3m-worth of add-ons to the deal.

Malinovskyi made a short appearance during Marseille’s win over ESTAC Troyes last week, where he came off the bench as a substitute. Sporting director Pablo Longoria spoke about a long-held interest in the player which originated for the Olympians’ recruiters at around January 2021 – he has ever since been a transfer target for Marseille.

OM reportedly made multiple approaches to the Serie A side for his signature, but persistence paid off as the Ukrainian is set for a home debut at a sold-out Orange Vélodrome to watch their side face Lorient in a vital Ligue 1 clash.
