L’Alsace report that Julien Stéphan’s Strasbourg side has pulled out of a deal to sign 36-year-old French central defender Daniel Congré on a free transfer owing to concerns around his fitness.

The ex-Montpellier man is suffering an injury which will keep him out of action for another 4 weeks and RCSA claim that they were looking for someone who could be fit and ready immediately.

Although Congré appeared to undergo a medical with relative success, the Strasbourg medical staff were forced to recommend that the player would be out of action for another month.

Congré still has interest from 2 Ligue 2 clubs.

January 30, 2024 | News | No Comments

Baldé is under contract with Les Parisiens until 2023 and can also play as a central defender – he will not extend his contract with PSG before making the move as he gears up to experience his first professional minutes after spending last season with the U19s last season.

Lille manager Jocelyn Gourvennec appears to have struggled to foster squad harmony in the opening days of his tenure – team-mates Xeka and Tiago Djalo clashed and appeared to fight each other as the half-time whistle went on Saturday during a friendly match vs KV Kortrijk.

They were both sent off – it appears that Xeka was frustrated with Djalo for his poor 1st half performance, raising voices at each other in Portuguese before getting their hands involved.

In order not to entirely spoil the exercise of a friendly match, the Belgian side’s manager Luka Elsner, offered for his side to play with one player less in the 2nd half – so the rest of the match saw a 10 vs 9 situation.

The 23-year-old scored 22 league goals last season in a campaign that saw his club promoted to Ligue 1, having previously played for Dunkerque and made an international appearance for Guinea.

Nevertheless, Bordeaux will have to raise funds from player sales before making any significant moves in the market. With the Gerard Lopez’s takeover bid successfully approved by French football’s financial regulator – the DNCG – the club has been imposed restrictions related to its financial trouble, which will impact its summer window.

Les Girondins are also interested in signing Portuguese 23-year-old full-back RIcardo Mangas from Boavista, another club under Lopez’s management.

RMC Sport report this morning that Monaco midfielder Enzo Millot has been in contact with newly-promoted Bundesliga side VfB Stuttgart, with talks at an advanced stage.

The 19-year-old, who has one year left on his current contract with the Monégasques, would not be unfavourable towards a move to Germany. Discussions are currently ongoing, with Monaco also open to a sale.

The young midfielder made two league appearances for the club last season, having come through the youth ranks at the principality.

Le Progrès reports this evening that Lyon are still keeping tabs on Sassuolo forward Jérémie Boga. The Ivory Coast international is said to be interested in the project set up by Peter Bosz and Juninho – manager and director of sport, respectively – and grew up a Lyon fan.

The Neroverdi have set their asking price for the Frenchman at €30m, having initially valued Boga at €20m. Fellow Serie A club Atalanta have  bid €23m – it remains to be seen whether Lyon will have the financial means to improve on that offer and bring the Marseille native back to Ligue 1.

Les Gones had initially registered their interest in the 24-year-old earlier in the transfer window, with Boga himself open to the potential move, while Marseille were also keeping tabs.

Boga has played in Serie A for the last three seasons, impressing in an entertaining Sassuolo side formerly managed by Roberto De Zerbi which has been improving year-on-year. He had previously come through the Chelsea academy, and undergone loan spells at Rennes, Granada and Birmingham City.

This morning marked Lionel Messi’s first formal appearance as a Paris Saint-Germain player, as the Argentine was joined by club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi in front of the press. The former Barcelona man had touched down in Paris yesterday afternoon, passing his medical and putting pen to paper on a two-year deal with an option for an extra season.

The 34-year-old notably discussed his anticipation at joining the club and his objectives for the years to come, while Al-Khelaifi notably replied to Kylian Mbappé’s earlier comments regarding the competitiveness of the PSG squad.

Messi on his Barcelona departure

Everyone knows how difficult leaving Barcelona was for me, it was difficult to imagine changing after such a long time. With everything that’s happened to me in the last week, it’s been difficult emotional and sudden, and at the same time very quick. The PSG management had positioned themselves from the very first day, even though it wasn’t easy given the circumstances. I’ll always be grateful for the love Barcelona have shown, it’s home for me. I experienced a lot there, from my childhood. We’ll see if we meet in the Champions League – on the one hand, it would be great,  but on the other it would be strange to play at home again under a different shirt.

On arriving in Paris

I’m very happy to be here. […] I still have ambition, just like the club. We’re ready to try and win it all. That’s my objective, to grow and win titles.

It’s fantastic here, there are great players in every position – with some spectacular signings as well as the players who are already in place. I’m going to play with the best, and that’s amazing. I think we have a top team, beyond the players who have come in this summer.

On the objectives this season

We all know how difficult the Champions League is, PSG do as well. We’ll need a strong and unified team, which I think is the case, at least looking from the outside. The Champions League is a special competition, it’s what makes it so beautiful and important. I’ll say it now: my dream is to be able to lift the Champions League trophy again.

On who he knows at PSG

I already know some of the people here – Neymar, Di María, Paredes… I’ve already been speaking to some in the dressing room, it’s something that influenced my decision.

I know [Mauricio Pochettino], there is this natural proximity given that we’re both Argentinian. Things unfolded perfectly from the start, it’s something which also played a role.

On Ligue 1

I’ve followed the league, it’s progressed well in the last few years, notably thanks to PSG. It makes it more competitive. The rivals are progressing too and they want to beat Paris. It’ll be a new stadium and new supporters, but I’m very happy to discover it all.

Nasser Al-Khelaifi on Mbappé’s future

Kylian had come out and said that he wanted a competitive team. I would say that this one is, now. There’s no more excuses to do anything else now.

NAK on FFP

We know the rules of Financial Fair Play and we’ve always respected the regulations, if we’ve signed him it’s because we knew we could. […] What the media need to focus is not just the negatives, but also the positives that he will bring.

Following the arrival of Xherdan Shaqiri from Liverpool yesterday and Chelsea’s Emerson Palmieri last week, Lyon continue to look to strength their squad, with several players also reportedly transfer listed by the club amid OL’s latest crisis.

According to Foot Mercato, new OL coach Peter Bosz has made Zenit Saint Petersburg’s Iranian striker Sardar Azmoun his top transfer target for the final week of the window with discussions between the French club and the player’s entourage ongoing.

The 26-year-old Azmoun scored 19 times for Zenit last season and boasts an impressive international record of 34 goals across 52 caps. Under contract until just next summer, Lyon are unlikely to pay the full €20m asking price however.

Ouest France report this afternoon that Saint-Étienne goalkeeper Étienne Green has told the France youth team set-up that he intends to play for England, his country of birth.

The 21-year-old, who became Les Verts’ starting goalkeeper back in April, had seen his impressive performances spark interest from Sylvain Ripoll and his staff. Leeds’ Illan Meslier will instead be the first option for the national team, with European Championship qualifiers coming up in September.

Green was born in Colchester in Essex before moving to France aged four, and has a French mother and English father. He was called up for the Euro 2021 competition earlier this year, but did not feature and was limited to one bench appearance against The Netherlands.
