PSG in talks with Zinédine Zidane

January 4, 2024 | News | No Comments

Le Parisien report this morning that Paris Saint-Germain have been in talks with France legend Zinédine Zidane for the past few weeks, with a view towards the former Real Madrid manager taking over from Mauricio Pochettino.

The World Cup winner, who has reportedly turned down an approach from Manchester United, had been increasingly linked to Les Parisiens with the Argentine’s future in Ligue 1 looking increasingly uncertain.

A meeting took place earlier this month at Paris’ Royal Monceau. The talks, which are said to have included directors Leonardo and Jean-Claude Blanc as well as the Ballon d’Or winner, have been denied by the club.

PSG’s intention is to have Zidane on the touchline for next season, with negotiations heading in that direction. Spanish outlet AS previously reported that the former midfielder would be reticent about joining mid-season.

With the club already rejecting an approach from Manchester United for the Argentinian manager, Mauricio Pochettino’s decision could play a role in proceedings.

The league leaders had already met with Zidane when he had left Real Madrid. At the time, he wanted to take a break from management, with a potential view towards taking over from Didier Deschamps as France manager.

Speaking to Amazon Prime Video, the referee who was presiding over tonight’s Ligue 1 match between Lyon and Marseille, Ruddy Buquet, appeared to affirm that Lyon President Aulas’ version of events on the game’s suspension and subsequent discussion about whether or not to resume proceedings was inaccurate.

“We would have liked for things to go differently, my decision was always for the match not to restart. There were other considerations to take into account, for obvious footballing reasons, I decided not to restart the match. There is the pitch and things outside of it but the infinite decision came to me and I took it. We did an initial announcement on the tannoy, we must protect the players, we are the first line responsible for the security, I therefore decided for us to return to the dressing rooms. We also have to take into account external factors, the stadium is full, the evacuation of players is also an important element in terms of security. We would have liked to come speak in other conditions, the world of football and sport in general is expecting other actions to be taken.”

Speaking with L’Équipe, Bordeaux owner Gérard Lopez sought to reassure fans that the project at the club remains financially viable.

On the financial aspect, we regularly hear that the club has no money?“You hear that because rumours are made up in coffee shops, but they’re never substantiated. For Bordeaux, not only is the budget sorted for this season, without the sale of more players, but it’s also almost finalised for next season. We can’t afford to go looking for €20m players but we have everything we need.”

But the DNCG still imposes constraints on you?“In order not to have them, we would have had to be in the second or third year of the project. We were in recovery mode, we inherited a very large payroll. We’re simply dealing with a club that has a high budget compared to other clubs. If we had the 12th biggest budget in Ligue 1 we would have avoided constraints, but covering the real budget is another story.”

As reported by L’Équipe, a frustrated Lyon coach Peter Bosz was damning in regards his team’s display following a 2-1 home loss to Reims on Wednesday night. When asked how he felt, Bosz said:

“Very bad. We didn’t deserve to win, you have to be honest. From the start of the match, we were not good. We created chances for 20 to 25 minutes in the first half but we didn’t play well. When you look, it was not good at all… I didn’t see aggressive players. We play much better than that usually. And, with all due respect for Reims, we have to win. I didn’t seen a team that does things together, even though we talked about that before the match.”

“I said to the players: ‘It wasn’t the referee or the [poor] pitch, it’s us who were not good.’”
