Ligue 1 side Marseille held a press conference this afternoon, the first since their pre-season preparations for the 2020/21 campaign began, to announce the two-year contract extension of French international attacking midfielder Dimitri Payet until 2024.

Payet, 33, has signed on to a peculiar deal, that sees him take a series of wage cuts, in an arrangement that will also see the player integrate into the coaching or administrative staff, his exact role to be determined down the line.

“A Marseillais for life,” read one of the two shirts that President Eyraud, André Villas-Boas and the player held up to the cameras this afternoon.

Eyraud explained the reasoning behind his decision to make this move:

“Dimitri came to see me to tell me that he wanted to be a Marseillais for life. I liked what he was saying. He explained to me that he really wanted to finish his career here. And on top of finishing his career here, to continue with a project of converting into another role in this club that he loves so much.”

In this new deal, Payet has accepted take a 50% haircut on his existing salary, which is reported to currently be €500k a month.

Eyraud added: “He has accepted to reduce his salary by 30% for 2021/22. On the two additional years in his contract, he has accepted his base salary to be reduced by between 40% & 60%. He has also waived his right to qualification bonuses for European competitions and a very big part of the remuneration in the final two years of his contract will only be guaranteed if he is in the starting XI, if he is not in the position to express himself on the pitch, then his remuneration would be extremely reduced for a player of his experience and quality.”

Dimitri Payet explained his thought process behind the decision:

“I have often said that I loved this club, that my family felt good. The idea of this gesture was planted in my head when the president said that the players will need to make efforts. Who better than I to make an example (as captain). Loving the club, saying it is good, but showing it is better. I really want to be part of Marseille and to help it grow.”

L’Équipe report that Ligue 1 side Dijon have signed 19-year-old midfield talent Eric Dina Ebimbé on loan with an option to buy from PSG.

The teenager spent the 2019/20 campaign on loan with Le Havre in Ligue 2 under the orders of Paul Le Guen, making 25 appearances across the campaign.

Ouest-France report that 22-year-old Ligue 1 side Angers’ winger Farid El Melali was taken into police custody today for questioning by police after local authorities received an additional complaint that the Algerian engaged in indecent exposure, separate to his public masturbation whilst looking upon a neighbour in May which he is already facing a court fearing for.

El Melali did not participate in today’s training session after being taken into police custody – this is the second time that the winger has been brought in to explain himself for the same activity spanning across two separate incidents.

Angers President Fabrice Favetto-Bon had the following to say on this matter:

“We believe that we have already made statements on this matter. We heard the player’s apology. Obviously, this type of behaviour, pending the decision of the courts, does not conform with the values of the club and our requirement of players to be examples. The process is ongoing.”

It remains to be seen whether this second infraction dates before or after the incident which led the Angers player to being taken into police custody for the first time back in May.

The local prosecutor will make their case against El Melali formally later this summer, during which El Melali will have to decide to plead guilty or not guilty on not one, but two counts of indecent exposure.

In accordance with article 222-32 of the penal code, the player risks receiving a sentence of 1 year’s imprisonment and a €15k fine. That’s before even considering possible sanctions handed down by his employer, Angers.

Following his time in police custody this morning, he returned to Angers training in the afternoon.

France Football report that Ligue 1 side Lille have entered into surprise talks with 35-year-old Turkish international striker Burak Yilmaz.

Lille Sporting Director Luis Campos is understood to have taken a trip to Istanbul to negotiate a possible transfer with Besiktas for a player under contract with them until June 2021.

The situation for Les Dogues could be an easier one owing to the fact that the Turkish outfit is facing financial difficulties and the striker is understood to have not received his wages consistently in 2020.

If Yilmaz joins, he would numerically replace Loïc Rémy in the squad, having scored 13 goals and provided 7 assists in the Turkish 1st division this season.

After St Étienne, I thought it was dead. I cried the entire night through. I was hurt but I didn’t want to show that to the others… I am going to leave my body out on the field on Sunday! I want to win the Champions’ League!

On who he wants to face in the Champions’ League final:

I have a preference for Lyon of course, a French club. If we don’t value our Ligue 1, who will? If it is Bayern, ok, but Lyon would have a special taste to it.

On Neymar:

With Neymar we share similar traits, we have a lot of fun but we understood that we needed to be less focused on ourselves. We need others to win.

On similarities with the France World Cup adventure:

Yes, I am feeling the same thing. We have succeeded in creating a squad where everyone brings something to the table. It is easier to run for a friend who you like. I do not know if that will be what allows us to win this but it will contribute to it.

Speaking to RMC Sport, Marquinhos reflected on PSG’s Champions’ League final defeat at the hands of Bayern.

“The victory did not come. You don’t play a final, you win it but we did not manage that. But on the other side, we are all proud of our team. Nobody believed in our ascent. We succeeded in taking a step forward. We have to be proud to have made it to the final, and be disappointed because we did not win it. We will have to continue down this path, in terms of sacrifice, in terms of togetherness. We have to continue with this solidarity on the pitch which we have had since the beginning of the season. Now, it is the moment to go back to what we are used to in Paris, think about next season, see if we can do better.”

“It was a final with a lot of tension. We played with our weapons, so did they. This is a team that had possession… We did not manage to finish off our chances. In a final, you don’t get many chances and you need to take them. The Bayern team did not create many chances. They hd control but not many chances, but they scored a goal.”
