Premier League side Leicester City have this morning entered into formal fee negotiations with AS Monaco to sign Algerian attacking midfielder Rachid Ghezzal, according to L’Équipe.

A deal for the 26-year-old could be complete this weekend, after weeks of initial talks.

Leicester manager Claude Puel had placed the player high up on his list of summer window priorities.

Toulouse centre Pita Akhi is expecting another close game against Munster when the two sides clash this weekend in the Champions Cup.

The last time Munster hosted the French giants at the Aviva Stadium in Dublin, in last season’s quarter-finals, the game was forced into a drop-out to determine the winner after not even extra time could separate the teams.

“Sea of red”

Akhi admits to being surprised by the hoards of supporters in red supporting Munster, given the game was played in Dublin, saying the atmosphere was “amazing”.

“I didn’t expect that many people to turn up because it’s obviously in Dublin,” Ahki told The42.

“It was a sea of red, it was amazing.

“You could just hear the crowd throughout the whole game singing songs. My wife was in the stands for both the quarter-final and semi-final [against Leinster at the same venue a week later] and she said that the atmosphere in the quarter-final was a lot more energetic with the songs and stuff like that.

“I definitely could feel what the Munster team could feel.”

This weekend’s clash will be played in Limerick at Thomond Park, where the centre anticipates another large and energetic crowd.

Akhi also expects another tight clash and Munster to come at his side, especially after last season’s heartbreak.

“In Limerick, it will be a different beast heading there with a full crowd behind them because Munster in Munster is tough,” he said.

“I’ve played Munster three times now and every game is hard, as you saw last season in the quarters. It went down to the wire, down to penalty kicks. I think it will be a bit of the same.

“Munster will want to get one up on us after last season.

“They take this competition really seriously and they will be preparing really well.”

Champions Cup priority

The midfielder says Toulouse is a team that puts a premium on the Champions Cup and will be looking to improve on their efforts from last season, where they bowed out to Leinster in the semi-finals.

“When we lost last season in the semis, it hurt,” said Ahki. “Leinster is Leinster, they’re a big European side, have a lot of internationals, and they know how to play finals footy.

“Toulouse take this competition seriously, the management take it seriously, and we want to put our best foot forward.”

Toulouse has made a splendid start to their season and sit at the summit of the Top 14 table. They will be boosted by talisman Antoine Dupont who is available for selection after successfully appealing his recent suspension.

“We started off quite well,” said Ahki.

“Obviously, with the French internationals gone and Ange Capuozzo with Italy, it’s quite tough trying to get the new combinations together and all the young boys coming up to get on the same level.

“I guess that’s the same with any other team that has a lot of internationals.

“We’re looking forward to this block of games and then when the Six Nations comes around, we have to pick it up.”

Foot Mercato spoke to Olivier Giroud after tonight’s friendly match between Chelsea and Lyon, after which the French international confirmed that he had spoken to Lyon captain Nabil Fékir about a possible move.

“I spoke to him when we were together in the French national team, when his move to Liverpool fell through. Then we discussed Chelsea, and I even think that Eden said a couple of words to him. We would obviously welcome him, he is a super player, but I don’t know if this is something that could happen as the window closes on Thursday.”

Spanish outfit Sevilla have made a €25m verbal offer for Lille’s precocious forward Nicolas Pepé, according to France Football.

The Ivorian forward, who is currently contracted to Lille until 2022, was the subject of a €14m bid from Southampton last week, which was rebuffed by Les Dogues.

Lille would prefer not to sell, but his future is currently in the balance, owing to their recent problems with the French football financial watch-dog, the DNCG.

Aston Villa have today signed Lille winger Anwar El Ghazi on loan for the 2018/19 season. Should El Ghazi impress, however, the temporary transfer could become permanent given the option to buy that Villa negotiated into their agreement with Les Dogues.

Lille have been El Ghazi’s parent club since January of 2017 when he joined from Ajax for €7m. The 23-year-old’s time in France has been mixed, with any difficulties stemming from an inability to hold down a spot in Lille’s starting eleven. Primarily a right winger, El Ghazi struggled to displace strong competition for his position in the form of Nicolas Pépé, who has burst onto the scene in Northwestern France.

Throughout his year and a half in the red and blue of Lille, El Ghazi appeared in 44 matches, scoring six goals and adding four assists. Despite never establishing himself as a consistent regular in the first team, El Ghazi’s qualities were still evident. Quick, skillful, and with an eye for goal, the Dutch winger is able to play on the right, left, or even through the middle, a position that he was often deployed in during his time in Amsterdam.

Much has been made of Lille’s recent financial struggles, and it seems like El Ghazi’s departure is the latest effort made to right the ship. Having El Ghazi’s wages off of Lille’s payroll could be good for both the club and the player, as the opportunity to start anew in England seems to be welcomed by El Ghazi.

In Aston Villa’s official club announcement, El Ghazi added a few words, declaring, “I am thrilled to join a football club of the size of Aston Villa. I visited Villa Park late last night after flying in from Holland and it gave me goosebumps. I can’t wait to get out there and experience it for real and play in front of such passionate fans.”

FC Porto have this evening confirmed the signing of Brazilian left-back Jorge from Monaco.

The full-back, who moved to the Stade Louis II in January 2017 for a €8.5m fee from Flamengo, and moves to the Portuguese champions on a season-loan deal, with an option to buy included.

The 22-year-old – who remains under contract with Monaco until 2021 – has made 24 appearances with the 2017 Ligue 1 Champions, scoring 2 goals.

Jorge will be looking for further playing time under Sérgio Conceição to boost his chances of either earning a permanent transfer or to force his way back into Monaco’s first team setup.

The former Flamengo left-back has also received 10 caps at Brazil U-20 level and has also earned a solitary cap for the senior national side.

With Thierry Henry’s debut at the helm of Monaco on the horizon, there is just enough time to look back at the many achievements of the club’s former boss Leonardo Jardim. It is with a heavy heart that we say farewell to the Portuguese head coach who will likely be pitching up somewhere else in the near future but here are his five greatest achievements with the Principality side.

1 | The Ligue 1 title win

Could there be any greater achievement? Many thought that nobody would ever break the iron grip that money-bags Paris Saint-Germain had on the L’Hexagoal trophy but in the magical 2016-17 season, AS Monaco did just that.

A combination of experience, youth and expert coaching, the team marched on to a staggering 95-point total where they failed to lose a single game after December 21st. In fact, even more impressively, they won 12 straight games with PSG breathing down their neck to close out the season, whilst still being involved in three other competitions.

To motivate a side to beat a superstar team, maintaining a very high level of performance throughout a gruelling nine-month stretch while playing entertaining football should not be underestimated. Jardim crafted this squad to perfection, found the formation that suited them all and did what many thought would be almost impossible.

2 | The best attack in Europe

You might not think it, but many saw Jardim as a defensive coach in his first few years at Monaco. As he settled in, the team were known to be stubborn under his stewardship, while growing slowly on the offensive side of the game.

That image went right out of the window in that title-winning season, where they netted 159 goals in all competitions. Across the 63 games played, that is an average of just over 2.5 goals per game, which is an outstanding achievement for any team in any league, not just one that beat the totals of the likes of PSG, Lyon, Manchester City and Borussia Dortmund.

They were Europe’s real entertainers in that season and it’s easy to see why. Jardim allowed his creative players to express themselves, encouraging them to create in the final third and the rewards were there for anyone willing to get a ticket.

3 | Champions’ League competitors

The great myth of France being a farmer’s league was almost entirely sniffed out during the 44-year-old’s reign at the Stade Louis II as he made his side competitive in Europe’s grandest competition.

Back in the 2014-15 campaign, they knocked out Arsenal in the Round of 16 with a blistering counter-attacking performance at the Emirates, with even Dimitar Berbatov getting involved in the goals. Added to that, they only lost 1-0 on aggregate to eventual runners-up Juventus and even had the chances in the second leg of that tie to cause an upset.

Two years later, they cruised out of a sticky group which included Tottenham Hotspur, Bayer Leverkusen and CSKA Moscow before defeating Manchester City in one of the best two-legged ties in Champions League history and knocking off Borussia Dortmund before they hit s brick wall in The Old Lady yet again.

A Ligue 1 side other than PSG were finally credible in the Champions’ League for the first time in just under 10 years and that really established that Jardim’s good work with Monaco translated on a continental scale, rather than just a domestic one.

4 | Recycling a team

Can you think of another manager who had almost the entire spine of his squad sold, only to come back two years later to win the league?

In the summer of 2015, Monaco lost Layvin Kurzawa, Anthony Martial, Aymen Abdennour, Yannick Carrasco and Geoffrey Kondogbia, all high-quality, integral players to the team at that time. It allowed him to blood in some youngsters, they added a few players and managed to become even greater than they had before.

Even after the summer of 2017, where they lost Kylian Mbappé, Benjamin Mendy, Bernardo Silva and Tiemoué Bakayoko, they still managed to finish second in the league. Not many have had so much taken from their core group and recovered so gracefully, but Jardim was a master at getting on with business, trusting his players and succeeding again.

5 | Nurturing young players

This will likely be the achievement that Jardim himself is most proud of – the fact he allowed so many young footballers to grow under his guidance.

We all know the big names like Mbappé, Thomas Lemar, Fabinho and Bernardo Silva – player’s that he plucked from obscurity and turned into some of the world’s best. Yet he also helped guide those on the fringes. Look at a player like Rony Lopes, who came on strides last season having been unimpressive out on loan – back under the tutelage of Jardim, he has turned into Monaco’s  most important player.

Eight players either 21 or under have turned out for Monaco this season, how many other coaches would be brave enough to put that much trust in so many young players at the top of the footballing pyramid, with a smattering of older heads sitting on the bench?

The honest answer is not many and his legacy has not just affected Monaco’s long-term future in the most positive way possible, but plenty of the second-tier sides in Europe desperate to emulate it.
