Vacuum metalizing is the process of physically plating a metal material onto a plastic part in a vacuum chamber. The technique was first used in the 1930s to make reflective films for lenses. Later, it was extended to various optical parts, such as street lamps and automobile headlights. It is also used as a functional film for aluminum coating plating of records, decorative coating of materials and surface modification. These applications include imitation gold plating of watch cases, metallic texturing of plastics, and metallic coating of mechanical tools.

Also, as countries around the world focus on environmental protection, the vacuum metalization process is gaining more and more attention as an environmentally friendly surface treatment that is carried out almost entirely in a vacuum chamber, where metal vapor is not released into the air.

What is the Vacuum Metalizing?

Vacuum metalizing, also called vacuum metallization, is a process that allows creating a metallic layer on metalized parts or a substrate and is a form of physical vapor deposition (PVD). It coats a metal (such as aluminum or copper) onto a non-metallic substrate by evaporation.

The evaporation of the metal occurs by feeding a metal wire into a heating source (involves heating) in a closed chamber under a high vacuum at approximately 1500°C (2700°F). The lack of pressure in the vacuum chamber lowers the boiling point of the metal parts, which causes the liquid metal to change from a condensed phase to a gaseous phase. The metal vapor adheres to the surface of the substrate, producing a metallic coating or decorative coatings on the thin film or fabric.

The Best Metal For Vacuum Metalizing

Compared to aluminum, copper and silver have better electrical conductivity, but copper is susceptible to oxidation and corrosion, while silver is more costly. Due to the relatively low cost and better reflective properties, the best metal material for vacuum metallization is still aluminum.

1)Aluminum: For reflective coatings, the most commonly used material is aluminum, which can produce a 90% reflectivity. Industrial, commercial and automotive lighting reflectors all use aluminum.

2) Copper: Due to its better conductive properties, it is generally used as a shielding coating. However, because it is susceptible to corrosion, it must be covered with oxide layer or another metal (such as nickel-chromium or stainless steel) to prevent discoloration or oxidation, so this coating is also thicker, typically 10 times thicker than other types of metallization.

The Vacuum Metalizing Process

In the vacuum metalizing process, the material is heated until the material vaporizes in a vacuum chamber. First, take a look at two methods of vacuum metallization.

Metallization methods

There are two main types of metallization methods below.

1. Physical vapor deposition (Thermal evaporation)

Vacuum evaporation coating or vacuum coating heats the coating material in a vacuum coating environment and makes it evaporate in a very short time. The evaporated molecules of the coating material are deposited on the plastic surface to form a coating layer, which is generally used to evaporate low melting point metals such as aluminum.

This method is simple and convenient, easy to operate, fast and efficient film formation, and is the most widely used technology in thin film vacuum preparation.

2. Chemical vapor deposition (Sputtering)

The inert gas is filled in the vacuum and a high-voltage direct current is added between the plastic substrate and the metal target. The electrons generated by the glow discharge excite the inert gas and produce plasma, which knocks out the atoms of the metal target and deposits them on the plastic substrate. The adhesion of the coating film to the plastic surface is better than that of evaporation coating, and the film layer is dense and uniform.

Vacuum metallization: step by step

Both types of metallization follow the same steps:

1. Customized fixtures and clamping of parts

Custom jigs and fixtures are used to hold the parts in place for maximum efficiency during vacuum metalizing and painting operations, and for best masking results, with significant cost and quality control. Also, individual parts are inspected for visible defects prior to clamping to ensure the quality of the metalized coating.

2. Primer application

By spraying a special primer, adhesion or abrasion resistance is improved and a smooth surface is provided for metallization and paint finishes. This step is a pretreatment prior to vacuum metallization. After priming, the part is placed in a convection oven for curing along with the fixture.

3. Vacuum Metallization

The fixture is placed on a turntable in the vacuum chamber. A filament (tungsten filament or tungsten wire of an alloy) is used to evaporate the metal (most commonly known as aluminum vapor), creating a vapor cloud that bonds to the part. The work holding fixture is rotated in front of the evaporation source to achieve a uniform coating. After the metallization process is complete, the chamber is returned to match the atmosphere and the work holding fixture is removed.

4. Apply top coat

Depending on the required coating properties of the part, a top coat (top coating) can be applied to improve the chemical resistance, moisture resistance or wear resistance of the part and enhance its appearance of the part. Examples include 2K polyurethane and UV-curable wear-resistant clear coat; functional industrial top coating or top coat such as Teflon and ceramic coatings; stained and tinted finishes to give gold, bronze, colored chrome, and metallic satin finishes, etc.

5. Quality Inspection

The plastic parts and plastic components are inspected for quality according to ISO 9001 standards and the specific requirements of the project. In addition, for easy traceability throughout the process, a tracking label can be attached to each part so that errors can be traced and corrected if they occur.

What is the difference between Vacuum Metalizing and Electroplating?

Both vacuum metalizing and electroplating are essentially plating a layer of metal on a substrate, so what is the difference between them?

1. The material of metal plating

In the custom parts processing industry, vacuum metalizing is generally aluminum plating, and electroplating is generally chrome or nickel plating.

2. Plating environment

Generally, PVD vacuum metalization ( PVD application process) is done in a vacuum environment, which requires high environmental and equipment requirements and is relatively costly, while electroplating is done in an electrolyte solution, which is a relatively simple process.

3. Color and durability

Major and minor diameters are geometric parameters of a thread. Major diameter (outside diameter) is the largest material diameter of a gear tooth or thread feature. Outside or external thread diameter means the diameter of a screw and includes a raised helix height around the thread. Using a clipper rule or a thread pitch gauge, you can measure the outside diameter.

The major diameter or outside diameter is measured using an external thread screw.

A clipper can measure the outside diameter of a female thread (inside diameter, respectively). The outer diameter of the male thread is calculated by using a clipper. Thread pitch gauge helps you measure female threads, and male threads with clippers save your time and money.

2) Inner Diameter (Minor thread diameter)

Minor diameter can be defined as an imaginary cylinder that can touch the roots of the thread crests (a prominent part of a thread) of an internal thread or the roots of an external thread.

Special equipment is required to measure major and minor diameters. Minor diameter is a screw’s diameter that can measure at the root of the thread at the intersect area of the screw or the base of the thread.

3) Pitch diameter (Effective Diameter)

Effective or pitch diameter is the diameter of an imaginary co-axial cylinder that can intercept the surface of the thread. Pitch diameter can cross so that the intercept on a cylinder generator at the point where pitch diameter meets the opposite flanks of the thread groove. The thread groove is equal to half of the nominal pitch of the screw thread.

You can use a thread pitch gauge tool to check and identify the thread diameter and size. The thread pitch gauge tool can prove helpful to calculate and measure the thread’s number accurately within a given distance, and you can try various gauge tools for this purpose.

4) Pitch

The Pitch of the thread, or we can say it as thread pitch, is a distance from a point on the same screw thread to a corresponding threshold. 

The thread pitch will be on the next thread that can measure parallel to the axis. It should be between corresponding points on an adjacent surface in the same axial plane.

5) Lead

We can define lead-the distance a screw thread can advance axially in one turn. The lead and pitch are the same on a single-threaded screw, while the lead is two times the pitch on a double-threaded screw. The lead is three times the pitch on a triple-headed screw.

6) Tooth Angle

Tooth angle terminology refers to the shape and geometry of a thread. Threads can find in various shapes and styles. The tooth angle may be trapezoidal, square, or triangle.

7) Threaded Angle

The angle, which includes between the sides of the thread measured in an axial plane, is called the threaded angle or angle of the thread.

Different Types of Screw Threads

There are different types of threads found, and some main types of threads are parallel threads, including BSPP, UN/UNF, and metric parallel. The second type of thread is tapered threads in which metric tapered, BSPT, and NPT thread/NPTF thread are included.

1) Metric Threads or International Threads

2) British Standard Threads

British Standard Whitworth (BSW) thread is devised and specified by Joseph Whitworth. It is an imperial -unit-based screw thread standard and was the world’s first national pipe tapered thread standard.

British standard threads are one of the main types of threads and have coarse pitches and bases of many other standards such as BSCon, BSF, and BSCopper. BST is used for special purposes such as line adjustment and can find on bolts.

BSF (British standard thread with fine pitches) increases vibrations in automobile and aero work and line adjustment. These types of threads can also be used for the internal thread size and external thread size of iron and steel pipes where great strength is required. The thread form of BST is as follows:

Unified threads standard (UTS) is the main standard thread type for nuts bolts and has the same 60° profile as ISO metric screw thread.

The unified threads standard is the one thread form used in three countries, i-e, Canada, the United States, and Great Britain, under an agreement with the included angle of 60° so that they can easily exchange machinery and thread identifying tools. The unified threads standard is a general-purpose screw thread controlled by ANSI/ASME in the USA.

4) “V” shape threads

“V” shape threads are widely used, and you can cut them with a lathe machine, tap, or die. The thread shape is like the English alphabet V as their name reflects the form of screw threads.

5) Square threads

The square thread has high efficiency. It is used to transmit power, high load applications such as jackscrews and leadscrews. Square thread is a common screw thread form among the different types of threads, and its name is due to a square cross-section of the thread.

The square threads consist of the most efficient thread forms, but it is not easy to fabricate square threads. The square thread has the lowest friction, and it is widely used due to its high efficiency. The types of square threads can find on tools, spindles, feed mechanism of machine tool, and screw jacks.

Square thread type is less strong than V-thread, but it can offer less frictional resistance to motion than the whitworth thread.

6) Acme threads

Acme thread is mostly used for brass valves, bench vices, and screw-cutting lathes. It is a transformation of the square thread and can easily be produced. Acme thread type is stronger as compared to square thread. There are three types of general-purpose acme thread 2G, 3G, and 4G. Each class is used for the assemblies and clearance on all standard size diameters.

7) Knuckle threads

Knuckle thread is a thread form of the screw thread terminologies and can be used for ready and rough work. It has a rounded top and bottom. It is sensitive and can easily be inclined to damage and dirt. Knuckle thread is an adoption of the square thread, and they can easily be cast and rolled. The angle of the knuckle thread is 30 degrees. Buttress threads have the advantage of both V-threads and square threads and are used to transmit power when it is transmitted in one direction. It has the same strength as most threads of V-thread and has low frictional resistance characteristics of the square thread.

The height of buttress thread engagement is 0.6p and has a clearance angle from normal to the axis of 45 degrees. Common examples of buttress nuts and rods are airplane propeller hubs, breech assemblies of large guns, and columns for hydraulic presses.

9) Worm Threads

Worm threads are one of the different types of threads similar to acme threads as their shape also has 29 degrees. One difference is that they are deep than acme threads. My Baleaf review is a long time coming. I have been wearing Baleaf leggings and shorts, almost exclusively for two years now. (Proof in the pictures below!) I have featured Baleaf in many blog posts, like My Favorite Workout Clothes, How To Style Sweatpants, What To Pack For Bali, and The Most Flattering Women’s Shorts. But you may not have noticed them, and I can’t have you miss out on these inexpensive, high-quality goodies. I know, I know, I am not particularly budget conscious with my recommendations. I am all about the best, but sometimes the best just happens to be inexpensive. And that requires some hoopla.

What is Baleaf Sportswear?

Baleaf creates simple, yet versatile workout wear at insanely low prices (most everything is under $40) that can be worn for numerous sports and activities. It was founded in China, and the creator, Lefee Xu’s ethos was and continues to be simple: “meet the needs of the ever changing sports industry with professional yet affordable designs so that everyone has access to quality gear.”

Fun fact: Baleaf stands for, Balance Active Life with Ease and Attraction through Free-flowing ideas.

Even more fun, Baleaf has recently made a push towards being more sustainable and lowering its environmental impact. As part of this, they’ve started using materials made of recyclable and biodegradable materials in some of their products.  Most recently, they launched a line that uses a nylon material made out of recycled fishing nets and a polyester material made out of recycled plastic bottles. For every ton of nets used to make the fabric, Baleaf saves seven barrels of crude oil, while every ton of plastic bottles used saves 8,000 gallons of water, according to the company. To ensure they’re meeting international guidelines for recyclable materials, they received the Global Recycle Standard (GRS) certification and work to follow its criteria.

I tried these shorts made from Baleaf’s modal wood pulp biodegradable material, and can attest the material is absolutely scrumptious! And this style is so well made. Just size up on these. I got the small, and since they have a lower waist it cuts into my flesh. I will exchange for a medium shortly.

Best Running Shorts with Phone Pocket

Baleaf makes the best running shorts with a phone pocket. Obviously, the price point is unbeatable, or should I say unbelievable. These shorts are better quality than biker shorts four times their price — seriously. And they are one of the few biker shorts, or in my case, running shorts with pockets that actually hold your phone in place. These shorts are versatile, comfortable, and flattering.  They are super stretchy, but hold you in. They wash beautifully, don’t pill, and resist odor. I wear my shorts many times in a row. I just hang them on the door (versus crumbling them up) after a run to prevent bacteria build up and they are good to go for the next day.

I’m not done raving, stay with me. These biker shorts with a phone pocket (I love pockets so much!) come in at least 10 different colors, different hem lengths, and go from XS to XXL. You can choose from a 5, 7, or 8-inch inseam. I believe every single woman should own these, and that includes you. Yes, you. I own five pairs: black, blue, and burgundy in different length inseams.

Best Running Leggings with Phone Pocket

Baleaf has multiple options of running leggings with phone pockets, from thermal leggings for winter wear to lightweight leggings for summer. They are fantastically comfortable and flattering. Also, all 8 pairs of my Baleaf leggings have minimal to no crotch folds, which is essential. Most low-price leggings of any kind, and sometimes even higher-priced leggings, tend to create the dreaded camel toe. Whenever I put any pant on myself or my clients, I zero in on the crotch. As I say to my clients, “It’s all about the crotch.”

I also wanted to point out that some expensive leggings with pockets, like my beloved Lululemon Fast and Free tights, have flimsy pockets. When I’m on a run in my Lululemon tights, I constantly feel like my heavy-ass new iPhone is going to pop out of the pocket and onto the ground. I never feel this insecurity with Baleaf leggings or shorts. The Baleaf leggings are super stretchy, which sometimes coincides with weak material, but they have strong compression too. This means the pant has a solid hold on my curves and my phone. When you try them on and jump up and down you will understand what I mean. These pants really care about your phone’s safety.

Tip: My absolute current favorite Baleaf leggings right now are the lightweight leopard leggings pictured above and below. The combination of comfort, utility, and style makes my fashion heart combust. The crotch is also utter perfection! Perfection I tell you! I am beside myself with delight.

Baleaf Review: Workout Tops

I have handfuls of Baleaf leggings and biker shorts, but I only have one Baleaf top, which I adore: the flyleaf crew neck crop top. Since I have only tried one of their tops, I don’t feel comfortable reviewing them yet. I can only tell you what they offer: a lot of basic options in line with their ethos of versatility. In particular, I think you will be interested in their numerous UPF tops in plentiful colors. My fair-skinned clients are always asking for UPF options.

Baleaf Review: Which Size Should I Get?

Baleaf pants and shorts run true to size. I am 5’4″, size 4/6, 126 pounds and I wear a size small in all their bottoms. I sized up on the crop top because it looked small on the model, and thank goodness I did. The size medium top fits me like a glove without squeezing my fat. When in doubt, order two sizes. If you don’t want to deal with that, just order your usual size. Their items are so stretchy, you should be fine.

Dad sandals (or, are they futuristic sandals?) are not for everyone — or, are they? I get compliments on my dad sandals everywhere they go. Their comfort is obvious. Their versatility is not, but that doesn’t mean it’s not there. The cool thing about futuristic dad sandals is their ability to veer from uber casual (ie: my Fila shorts look) to structured (ie: my lavender pant look). Here are three ways to wear dad sandals that make sense for most women. Which look is your favorite?

How To Wear Dad Sandals With A Dress

The key to pairing dad sandals with a dress is focusing on a color in the shoe. To make it simple, stick with a solid colored dress that is not too lightweight and not too formal, like my off-white linen blend Joie dress. If you wear something too skimpy, it makes your feet look big. If you wear something too formal, it just doesn’t make sense. It is still a casual sandal after all, but in the right environment, you could pair this shoe with a structured dress, like a shirt dress, and wear it to the office.

How To Wear Dad Sandals Casually

I think we all know that funky sandals are intended for casual wear, so this one is a bit easier for most. First, look at the color of the shoe. My Heda FitFlops are off-white and muted lavender. Both of these colors are lighter in nature, so you can easily pair them with medium to light wash jean shorts. (A darker sandal would be paired with a darker denim). You can also wear them with any kind of workout wear, which is what I have done here. I am fixated on that gorgeous lavender shade, so I just popped the term “lavender” into the search bar of Nordstrom.com and perused all the casual clothing in that shade. I ended up finding this delicious Madewell shirt that I can’t stop wearing, and these fun Fila shorts.

How To Wear Dad Sandals With Pants

My futuristic dad sandals are nice and low at the ankle, so basically any ankle length pant works for them. (Here is my FAVORITE ankle length jean right now — it’s so comfortable! Order a size down.) For futuristic sandals that reach higher up the leg, pair them with a more cropped pant. If you want a more cutting edge look, pair them with cropped wide leg pants. The bulk of this shoe pairs nicely with the heavier silhouette of a wider pant. FYI, I am eyeing these Frame High Waist Crop Wide Leg Jeans.

To summarize, when creating outfits with dad sandals, simply pair them with solid-colored garments or simple prints that echo the color palette of the shoe.
