Ah, the music video. Once a vestige of past times, the medium has experienced a resurgence in recent years. And we can always expect it to receive the attention it deserves at the MTV Video Music Awards, airing live this Sunday, Aug. 28, from Madison Square Garden in New York City. As you might expect, the competition is fierce for the sought-after category of Video of the Year, so we gathered the five nominees for your viewing pleasure.

Kanye West — “Famous”

Kanye West’s performance art piece, which depicts nude wax figures of celebrities from Donald Trump to Taylor Swift, expectedly garnered a lot of attention. Not to mention that, in the beginning of the video, a voice clip saying, “Won a VMA Award” can be heard before the song begins. A harbinger, if there ever was one.
