On Women’s Day, IAAF Announces That Its First Female Vice President Will Be Elected In September

International Women’s Day surely salutes the spirit of women and a day that marks the focal point of anti-sexist and anti-discriminatory attitudes but this should not be seen as an isolated event. The point of designating a day from the year calendar to a woman is to bring about practical change.

The International Association of Athletics Federation (IAAF) has decided to walk the talk as it announced that the body’s first female Vice-President will be elected this year. As part of the widespread reforms adopted by the IAAF Congress at the end of 2016, the IAAF has added minimum gender targets into its constitution to establish parity at all levels in the sport’s governance, the statement said.

The athletics body said that there are currently six women on the IAAF council and the number will increase to seven at this year’s September elections. The future goal is to have 10 members in 2023 before reaching parity with male council in 2027.
