European Commission chief spokesperson Margaritis Schinas has been nominated by Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis as the country’s next commissioner, the prime minister’s office wrote in a statement Thursday.

Schinas, who has served as chief spokesperson since 2014, has been a fixture of the Brussels policymaking scene for nearly three decades.

He was a member of the European Parliament for Greece’s center-right New Democracy between 2007 and 2009.

Earlier in his career, Schinas was head of Cabinet to Commissioner Markos Kyprianou, as well as deputy head of Cabinet to Commission Vice President Loyola de Palacio. In the early 1990s, he was also part of the Cabinets of Spanish Commissioners Abel Matutes and Marcelino Oreja.
