CHICAGO, IL — Following a dunk contest for the ages on Saturday, the NBA All-Star Game takes center stage Sunday night at the United Center in Chicago. Team LeBron will take on Team Giannis for the second straight year in a matchup of the best basketball players in the world.
Despite a collection of many of the same players as last year’s game, the All-Star Game in 2020 will have a new added charity component and an overall game format, which have been added to honor the late Laker legend Kobe Bryant.
NBA Commissioner Adam Silver announced Saturday night that the All-Star Game MVP Award has been renamed to the NBA All-Star Game Kobe Bryant MVP Award.
Here’s a guide to Sunday’s All-Star Game, including the players participating, an explanation of the new rules and how to watch.
Tipoff: Sunday, 8:00 p.m.
Location: United Center, Chicago
How To Watch: The game will be broadcast live on TNT.
New Rules
The scores after each of the first three quarters will reset to zero, with the winner of the respective quarters receiving $100,000 to be donated to local Chicago community organizations. Team LeBron is playing for the Chicago Scholars and Team Giannis is playing for After School Matters.
After the start of the fourth quarter, the game clock will be turned off and a “Final Target Score” will be set. The target score will be set by taking the leading team’s total score from the first three quarters and adding 24 points.
The 24 represents the late Kobe Bryant’s longtime uniform number.
The team that gets to the target score first in the untimed final quarter will be declared as the game’s winner and earn an additional $200,000 for its designated community organization. If the first or second quarter ends in a tie, the $100,000 charity award for that quarter will be added to the next quarter’s award.
