Bison Open Season With 25-16 Win Over No. 14-Ranked Iowa State in Scheels Center
North Dakota State won the final three matches by major decision, pin and technical fall to rally past No. 14-ranked Iowa State by the score of 25-16 in a Big 12 Conference wrestling dual Nov. 6, before 1,371 fans in the Scheels Center at the Sanford Health Athletic Complex. It was the first win over a nationally-ranked opponent since the Bison edged No. 18 Wyoming 22-21 in Laramie on Feb. 1, 2015. It was NDSU’s first win over Iowa State (0-2 Big 12, 0-2) in four meetings with the Cyclones .. NDSU 285 Ben Tynan won by fall, 125 Josh Rodriguez recorded a tech fall, 157 Clay Ream claimed a major decision, and 149 Mitch Friedman, 165 Andrew Fogarty and 197 Cordell Eaton each won by decision.

North Dakota State University 125-pounder Josh Rodriguez won his fourth Bison Open individual championship, while five others each picked up their second titles at the 46th annual event held before 518 spectators in Scheels Arena on Saturday, Nov. 12 … Rodriguez, a senior from Guadalupe, Calif. (Righetti H.S.), won Bison Open 125 titles in 2013 unattached, 2015 and 2016 and 133 in 2012 … Rodriguez recorded his second pin of the tournament over teammate and unattached Paul Bianchi at 4:56 … He went 3-0 at the Bison Open and improved to 4-0 overall … NDSU had five wrestlers — 149 Kyle Gliva, 165 Andrew Fogarty, 184 Tyler McNutt, 197 Cordell Eaton and 285 Ben Tynan — each won Bison Open individual championships for the second straight year … North Dakota State unattached 141 Taylor Nein defeated teammate Joe Umlauf 6-4 in the first place match, while Bison unattached 133 Cam Sykora, 165 Grant Nehring, unattached 174 Cole Witzig, 184 Dylan Urbach, 197 Alex Bleeker and 285 Dan Stibral all placed second … NDSU received third place performances from 141 Tommy Walton, 149 Mitch Friedman, unattached 165 Nick Knutson and 184 Logan Paxton.

North Dakota State returns a pair of two-time NCAA qualifiers in 125-pounder Josh Rodriguez and 157-pounder Clay Ream … Rodriguez and Ream are two-time NCAA national qualifiers. Rodriguez was ranked No. 8 by The Open Mat, No. 9 by InterMat and FloWrestling, and No. 11 by WIN Magazine … Ream, who moves from 149 to 157 this season, was ranked No. 14 by The Open Mat … Rodriguez, a redshirt senior from Guadalupe, Calif. (Righetti H.S.), compiled a 36-10 record last season including 9-1 in duals with seven pins, seven tech falls and seven major decisions … He enters his senior year with a record of 78-33 including 28-13 in duals with 10 pins. Rodriguez placed third at the Big 12 Championships and was a win away from earning All-America honors last season … He is 5-4 in two NCAA appearances … Ream, a redshirt junior from Wentzville, Mo.
