Germany ‘must confront history’ as historic church where Hitler met Hindenburg rises from the ashes

On a fenced off patch of muddy ground in central Potsdam, they are rebuilding a piece of German history. It’s easy to miss the spot: for now it’s just another construction site.

But next year one of the most iconic churches in German history will rise again here, more than 70 years after it was bombed to ruins in the Second World War.

The Garrison Church was the parish church of the Kaisers and Kings of Prussia. Bach came here to play the organ. Frederick the Great was buried in the crypt, and those who travelled across Europe to see his tomb included Napoleon and Tsar Alexander I of Russia.

It was also, notoriously, where the victorious Adolf Hitler shook hands with President Paul von Hindenburg…
