MOORHEAD, Minn. – Southwest Minnesota State University 157-pound senior Cortez Arredondo won a regional title to earn his second trip to the NCAA DII Champions on March 8-9 in Cleveland, Ohio.

184-pound senior Griffin Osing took home third place to earn his first trip to the national tournament after a 4-1 day.

As a team, SMSU finished with a total of 52.5 points, ranking ninth out of 10 schools.

St. Cloud State earned the top-spot with a total 161 points.

Arredondo, who finished 4-0 on the day, secured his place at the national championships with a 5-4 decision victory over Colin Ayers from Augustana in the semifinals. Arredondo had two victories by fall in the opening round at 4:18 over Tucker Black from Upper Iowa and a victory by fall at 3:14 over Tanner Anthony from Wisconsin-Parkside and in the quarterfinals.

In the region championship match, Arredondo went to overtime to win a sudden victory over St. Cloud State’s Jake Barzowski.

This is the first regional title for Arredondo and his second trip to the NCAA Championships.

Griffin Osing received a bye the first round, fell in the quarterfinals but won three-straight in wrestlebacks to make it to the third-place match. In another close bout, Osing won in a 7-1 sudden victory win over Wisconsin-Parkside’s James Lehman.

Cole Hennen came one victory short with a loss in the third-place match against Augustana’s Clayton Wahlstrom with a 4-3 decision

Arredondo and Osing will compete at the NCAA Championships on March 8-9 in Cleveland, Ohio. This is the second straight appearance for Arredondo who competed last season after finishing second at Regionals.
