New York – Asos will be launching a collaboration with Textile Federation, the brand
known for being major on prints and graphic patterns. The exclusive
collection will be hitting stores on June 8. The collection, titled the
Asos Talent High Summer Collection, will feature a total of 11 pieces.

The collection is created thanks to a global design competition organized by
the online retailer to help recognize emerging global design talent. The
four winners this year were Odette Steele from London College of Fashion;
Chloe Baird from Glasgow Clyde College; Ezoe Robinson from Central Saint
Martins, and Santiago Garimo from Venezuela’s University of Zulia.

The competitors challenge was to create looks based on the concept of
Chinese Whispers. The collection includes jumpsuits, t-shirts, shorts and
dress, with price points anywhere from 42 dollars for a crop t-shirt to 76
dollars for a printed jumpsuit. It’s global inspired fashion at a very
accessible price.

London – Once seen as one of the high points of London Fashion Week, British label
Meadham Kirchhoff has officially closed its doors for good. The label’s
dissolvement was confirmed earlier this week by Edward Meadham, half of the
designer duo behind the brand together with Benjamin Kirchhoff.

“Meadham Kirchhoff wasn’t killed by the fashion industry, I think that it
was killed largely by itself,” he said in an interview with i-d this week.
“We were in a quagmire of debt and it was just becoming impossible to keep
up with anything,” he added. However, it was not until the duo lost the
studio and all of their work spanning the past twelve years that Meadham
saw it was over.

“One of the worst things about the death of Meadham Kirchhoff, for me, was
the loss of the archive. Our studio landlord just locked the doors and got
rid of it,” he revealed. “And then we tried to continue a bit and then the
studio closed and I went to hospital and that was that. Me and Ben, we’re
never going to work together.” Although Meadham explained that he is at a
loss for the future, the brand’s closure presented him with an opportunity
to recognised his work and achievements.

The final Meadham Kirchhoff show was for their Spring/Summer 2015
collection during London Fashion Week.

Earlier this year a campaign to drop the ‘plus size’ label went viral on Instagram, promoting the message that beauty goes beyond a size zero.

Fashion may be larger than life, but the industry’s standards of beauty, which emphasizes thinness, have been at the heart of many debates since the size zero issue was first raised.

Some organisations, like the UK’s All Walks Beyond the Catwalk, have called for greater diversity by highlighting the effect and responsibility the fashion industry has. This includes recognising the psychological impact of its messaging upon the minds of young women and men, together with the unprecedented amount of imagery we see via digital platforms.

A new documentary called Straight/Curve, to be released next summer, is an extension of the debate, discussing “female body image and the new era of plus size supermodels redefining society’s beauty standards.”

Size zero is not the only beauty

Directed by journalist Jenny McQuaile, the Kickstarter-funded documentary goes behind the scenes of New York City’s plus-size modelling industry, following a group of industry professionals turned fashion activists as they fight for diversity and inclusivity .

One of the questions it raises is how and why size zero became the norm and size 10 to 14 became “plus-size”. This question remains particularly relevant when you consider the fact that two-thirds of women fall into this bracket.

“The documentary has the possibility to revolutionise the modelling world by challenging a sizeist fashion industry not only to shatter the stigmatising one-size stereotype but embrace the body diversity that exists among all women,” says Kelley in the Kickstarter campaign video.

Hellas Verona manager Ivan Juric has denied there was any racist abuse from his side’s fans directed towards Brescia’s Mario Balotelli on Sunday.

Balotelli reacted furiously to abuse from the stands in Brescia’s 2-1 defeat away to Verona. While on the ball near the corner flag, he picked it up and kicked it into the stand before turning to leave the pitch. He was persuaded to carry on by team-mates and opposition players.

Under instruction from the match referee, an announcement calling for fans to stop was made over the stadium’s tannoy system, in line with UEFA protocol for such incidents.

The former Manchester City and Liverpool striker scored a late consolation goal for his side, but couldn’t prevent a defeat which left them in the bottom three in the Serie A table.

Former Croatia international Juric, 44, told Sky Sport Italia he thought Balotelli had made an incident out of nothing.

“Today there was nothing, no racist abuse,” he said.

“There was whistling and some goading against a great player. There was nothing. I am Croatian and people will say ‘sh*tty gypsy’, because unfortunately this is the trend in Italy. There is rampant racism, but today there was nothing.

“I don’t know why he reacted like that. Let’s not put it that way, it’s a lie.

“We don’t talk bullsh*t, if it had happened I would say so, and even if it was our own fans it would make me sick. But not today. When he scored the goal, there was a lot of goading. It was his problem, not ours.”

Juric later added in his post-match press conference: “I think, on a human level, being racist is an absolute low. In this case, I don’t think anything has happened. I spoke with the fourth official, too.

“There was only teasing of a great player. I don’t want to say anything against Mario. It may have happened to him elsewhere.”

Verona chairman Maurizio Setti also spoke to Sky Sport Italia after the game, and backed his manager’s point of view.

“I confirm that we have heard nothing,” Setti said. “Verona fans are passionate but they’re not racists. 

“When there are cases of racism we are the first to condemn them but it is wrong to generalise, speaking of racist chants and fans. Maybe two or three people among 20,000 fans might have said something.

“Those two or three people, if there are, we are ready to find them and punish them because I strongly condemn any such incident. I met Balotelli and I apologised if someone said something to him.”

Granit Xhaka will leave Arsenal in January, according to former Gunners forward Charlie Nicholas.

The under-fire captain was left out of Unai Emery’s squad to face Wolves in the Premier League at the Emirates on Saturday, following his angry reaction to being substituted against Crystal Palace last week.

Xhaka has explained his response, claiming he had been receiving abuse comments about his wife and daughter online and in person in recent months. However, Nicholas doesn’t think Xhaka was right to respond as he did.

“You just can’t behave like that, it’s as simple as that,” he said on Sky Sports. “The fans pay their cash, they come in there – and they pay big money at Arsenal – and they’re wanting better.

“They’re sick to death now, for the last four seasons or so they’ve seen average performances. Because of the lack of leaders that Arsenal have, it’s actually backfired on him. Because the players have picked the captain, so he has an influence in the dressing room.”

However, Nicholas didn’t lay the blame for the incident squarely on Xhaka’s shoulders, instead pointing the finger at manager Emery.

He said he thought Emery should have included Xhaka in the squad for the Wolves game, but the issue was traceable back to the Spaniard’s decision to allow the squad to elect their captain, rather than picking one himself.

“This length of time that it’s taken him to get rid of his anger, if I was the manager I wouldn’t have played him, but I would have put him in the group today, to bring him back in,” Nicholas continued.

“You bring him in, you get him involved in it. And then if he still feels the same, if he’s still in a bad mood, in a huff or angry, which he is probably all of them, what’s going to happen and materialise in the next week or two is it’s going to be a falling out of love with the club, the Arsenal owners have got to make a decision because they know the fans are against him, and I think he’ll leave in January.

“For years and years, Arsenal players got away with this because Arsene Wenger took all the blame, got all the responsibility.

“Emery takes a certain amount of responsibility. He should have made the captaincy choice, it’s his responsibility. You take leadership, you show leadership, he already knows his dressing room, that’s where he’s got it wrong.”

Javier Pastore has signed a five-year deal at Roma in a €24.7 million (£21.7m/$28.2m) move from Paris Saint-Germain, the Serie A club confirmed.

The 29-year-old arrived on a busy Tuesday for Roma, with Radja Nainggolan having completed his €38m (£33.5m/$44m) departure to Inter and Davide Santon and Nicolo Zaniolo moving in the opposite direction for a combined €14m.

Pastore won five Ligue 1 titles at PSG but fell out of favour under Unai Emery in 2017-18 and, due to his lack of playing time at club level, was overlooked for Argentina’s World Cup squad.

The playmaker spent two productive seasons in Serie A with Palermo prior to his move to Paris, and he is delighted to be back in familiar surroundings.

“I am very happy to be here at Roma. It is great to return to Italy and to do it with such a great club,” said Pastore in a statement.

Croatia midfielder Mateo Kovacic is confident his side will get the better of Argentina when they meet in the World Cup because they are “a better team” than the South Americans.

The two heavyweights of Group D meet on Thursday, with Argentina having drawn 1-1 with Iceland in their opener and Croatia beating Nigeria 2-0.

Neither game will be remembered as a classic encounter, but a win for Kovacic’s side against Argentina could potentially see them through to the knockout stages as group winners.

That would be something of a shock given the pre-tournament billing given to Argentina, in particular Barcelona’s talisman Lionel Messi.

Kovacic, though, insists that Messi is the only advantage the South Americans hold, believing that the rest of their team is better to a man.

“Argentina depends a lot on Messi, although they are a great team in other positions,” he told reporters. “He has to take care of them most of the time. He is phenomenal, he can resolve the game at any time.”

He added: “We do not need to be too afraid of Argentina, we are singularly better than them, except Messi, and so we should behave, look at ourselves, not others.”

Belgium coach Roberto Martinez says all of his players are desperate to be on the pitch ahead of the World Cup round-of-16 clash with Japan in Rostov-on-Don.

Having sealed passage from Group G with a match remaining, Martinez made sweeping changes to his starting XI for the 1-0 win over a similarly fringe England team in Kaliningrad.

Finishing top with a 100 per cent record earned Belgium a meeting with the Samurai Blue at Rostov Arena, where a host of first-choice stars, including Eden Hazard and Romelu Lukaku, are likely to return for kick-off.  

“The group is in a very good moment mentally and physically, the players are desperate to be on the pitch,” Martinez told a news conference.

“The ones who played against England had a really good experience. And the ones who were rested are waiting to get back on the pitch. 

“The players are ready to get the rhythm as fast as they can.” 

Belgium defeated Japan 1-0 in a friendly in November, but Akira Nishino has since replaced the sacked Vahid Halilhodzic at the helm of the team.

“The biggest difference is the change of coach,” Martinez said of his team’s opponents.

“In essence they are exactly the same, great energy, organised. 

“This Japan team shows there is a generation with a very good age. A lot of experience, they’ve played in Europe’s big leagues for a long time. 

“They know what it takes to win. [Takashi] Inui had a fantastic time in Eibar. They know what they’re doing on the pitch. 

“We’ll have to be concentrating at all time because of their dynamic approach and the amount of players they can accumulate in both boxes.”

Martinez confirmed Belgium have been practising penalties, but should the game go down to a shootout, the Spaniard knows no amount of training can replicate the pressure his players will be under.

“I think you have to be prepared for everything,” he said.

“It’s important not to underestimate the occasion. 

“The players have been practicing but nothing will prepare you for taking the penalty that will get you through to the next phase in the knockout stages of the World Cup.”

Having turned down the Three Lions job once, the man leading a World Cup 2018 charge acknowledges he is lucky to have been given another chance

Gareth Southgate feels “hugely fortunate” to have the opportunity to manage England after initially turning down the job in 2016.

Southgate had been working as England Under-21s manager when Roy Hodgson departed after a dreadful European Championship campaign, but he opted not to take up the senior role, which instead went to Sam Allardyce.

Allardyce’s subsequent sacking amid off-field controversy thrust Southgate into the spotlight as he impressed in an interim role, going on to secure the job full-time before guiding England to the World Cup and now the last 16.

Although his stock has never been higher, the former Middlesbrough boss acknowledges it was not a foregone conclusion that he would get another chance to lead his country.

“I feel hugely fortunate now,” Southgate said ahead of Thursday’s Group G clash with Belgium.

“It wasn’t what I wanted to do [after the Euros]. I wanted it to go well for Roy, just as I later wanted it to go well for Sam.

“I didn’t think, when Roy left, there’d be any enthusiasm for an internal appointment. I knew that my record with Middlesbrough – even though, for me, what I achieved with them in the first two years was better than anything I’ve done in the last couple of weeks – would be held against me as a manager.

“You’re always judged on results without necessarily all of the context and all the understanding of where you are, that you’re learning.

“But I remember [then Wales manager] Chris Coleman after the European Championships, saying, ‘You’ve got to go for things in life and not be afraid to fail.’

“That resonated with me because I’d probably just ruled myself out of taking on the job. If I was talking to young people or my own kids, I would be saying exactly those things, but I wasn’t living it myself.

“So I felt, then, actually I had to make sure that, if there are opportunities in life, you’ve got to go for them.

“Even as a young player, you maybe only get one World Cup. You assume there’ll be more, but you might only get one because of an injury or something else.”

The 2018 World Cup has been one of huge shocks. We are still in the first knockout round, yet champions Germany, Spain, Argentina and Portugal have already fallen, while Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi have also returned home.

Neymar and favourites Brazil were the next giants to take to the stage as they tackled Mexico in Samara, but the Selecao put on an authoritative display to win 2-0 as the Paris Saint-Germain star finally burst into life.

A metatarsal injury meant that Neymar came into the World Cup having played no club football since the end of February and it showed during a disappointing group stage where he was criticised for his perceived showboating and playacting.

There were worries from outside the camp that this competition could pass Neymar by, just as it had for other superstars like Messi.

However, Brazil’s star man finally awoke from his slumber against Mexico with a match-winning display.

He scored the opening goal at the Cosmos Stadium as his brilliant back heel to Willian bamboozled El Tri’s defence, allowing the Chelsea man to tee Neymar up for a simple finish at the back post.

Neymar then set up the second in the closing minutes by beating the Mexico offside trap and flicking the ball goalwards before substitute Roberto Firmino tapped home from close range.

Mexico coach Juan Carlos Osorio did all he could to control the 26-year-old as his right-back Edson Alvarez back was given a first-half education, matching up against the world’s most expensive player.

The 20-year-old did well in the opening stages when Mexico were the better team. But an outstanding piece of skill by Neymar down the left midway through the first half left Alvarez for dead and galvanised a Brazil side who then took charge.

Osorio was forced to change his right-back to Miguel Layun but the veteran couldn’t control Neymar in the second period, with the attacker’s interplay with Willian irrepressible at times. The Chelsea man also enjoyed a fantastic match having struggled in the groups as well.

Layun became frustrated by Neymar’s brilliance, even deliberately stepping on the superstar’s ankle off the ball, but fortunately escaped punishment. Neymar, true to form, exaggerated the foul.

Neymar holds huge unfulfilled ambitions to become one of his country’s and the game’s greatest ever players. He wants to win the World Cup and then also earn a Ballon d’Or, which has been dominated for the past decade by Messi and Ronaldo.

Winning the World Cup would be the best chance Neymar has of lifting the Golden Ball and, as things stand, Brazil look a good bet to challenge for the title in Russia.

Neymar now has 15 goals in 16 games for club and country this year, showing exactly why Tite has persisted with him in this World Cup, despite below-par performances against Switzerland, Costa Rica and Serbia.

He is edging closer to Pele’s national team goalscoring record after he netted his 57th goal in 89 appearances, putting him just 20 behind the all-time great.

Most importantly, though, Neymar has finally arrived in Russia, while Messi, Ronaldo and so many major nations have already returned home.
