The Red Devils are said to be among the frontrunners to sign the teenager but the former Dutch star thinks their Europa League status will hurt them

Netherlands legend Ruud Gullit believes Manchester United will miss out on signing Ajax star Matthijs de Ligt due to lack of Champions League football.

The centre-back enjoyed a stellar season for club and country, captaining Ajax to the Champions League semi-final while also starting for a Netherlands side that made the UEFA Nations League final.

De Ligt is expected to depart the Champions League semi-finalists this summer with Barcelona, Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain mooted as suitors.

Barca have often been seen as front-runners, having already signed De Ligt’s team-mate at Ajax and the Netherlands, Frenkie de Jong, prior to the end of the season.

However, it has been reported United have aimed to convince the centre-back to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s project at Old Trafford.

But while Barca and PSG can boast the chance to play in Europe’s top continental club competition, Manchester United find themselves in the Europa League after a sixth place finish in the Premier League last season.

And that lack of Champions League football next season is something the former Chelsea man Gullit thinks will keep De Ligt from joining the Red Devils this summer.

“I don’t think it’ll be Manchester United, they don’t play in the Champions League,” Gullit told Omnisport when asked where De Ligt will sign.

“I think he wants to play in the Champions League, so that’s unfortunate for Manchester United.”

Even if he chooses against United, De Ligt should have plenty of options this summer after his standout performances for Ajax and the Netherlands.

However, it’s possible some potential suitors may find their efforts hamstrung by a big transfer fee and salary demands, while one or two other clubs are unable to participate due to looming tranfer bans.

Still, Gullit hopes the 19-year-old finds the right situation for himself this summer.

“It’s going to be difficult [for a lot of teams], a lot of them [big teams] might have UEFA [transfer] bans, so there’s a lot that’s going on still,” Gullit said.

“So I hope he makes the right decision for himself.”

The Brazil star spoke to local authorities in the wake of the recent allegations

Neymar testified to Brazilian prosecutors for five hours on Thursday in the wake of rape allegations made by a 26-year-old woman.

Najila Trindade accused the Paris Saint-Germain star of raping her in a Paris hotel, calling the May 15 incident “an assault together with rape”.

The winger has vehemently denied the allegations levied against him, and has not been charged with any crime by Brazilian authorities.

On Thursday, Neymar provided testimony to Sao Paulo authorities for five hours before making a statement to the press.

“I will be brief… I just want to thank the support and care from all those who had sent me messages,” Neymar said.

“And to say that I am calm. The truth will appear, sooner or later. The only wish I have right now is that this case ends as fast as possible”.

Before Neymar’s statement, the three prosecutors who interrogated him also made a brief statement of their own – in Portuguese – to the local media.

“He answered all the questions. From now on, the commissioner Juliana Bussacos will take the other actions needed to conclude the investigation.

“As the inquiry is confidential, we cannot say anything about these actions. He answered all the questions in a satisfactory way. He denied the crime.”

The Brazil star had previously spoken with Rio de Janeiro police over his publication of videos and messages allegedly of his accuser to his Instagram account without her approval.

Neymar’s father claimed he preferred “an internet crime to rape” and said the images were censored and the name of the woman not revealed.

After testifying for that investigation at the Virtual Crimes precinct on Thursday, Neymar thanked fans for their support while his lawyer, Maira Fernandes, claims to be confident her client will be found innocent.

Neymar was expected to lead Brazil in this summer’s Copa America, but suffered an ankle injury against Qatar in a pre-tournament friendly that saw him removed from the match after just 21 minutes.

He has since been replaced by Chelsea winger Willian, with PSG saying he is expected to be out of action for up to four weeks.

Brazil are set to begin the Copa America on Friday against Bolivia.

It goes without saying that the main attractions of New York Fashion Week are the designers who present their collections, and the runways they are presented on. With ready-to-wear pieces we’ve already mentally added to cart, elaborate sets, and our favourite models displaying this season’s wares, what’s not to love?

Being part of the ‘Big Four’, NYFW and its respective shows always garner a ton of well-deserved attention, and that’s not even taking this year’s major changes — including a shorter, less-crowded six-day calendar, show collaborations, and increased political issues referenced — into consideration; with each sure to make the spring/summer 2020 season one for the history books.

But while clothing, accessories and political nods are more than enough to grab our attention, even we can admit that our eyes occasionally drift off the runway and onto the front row, which often hosts a number of notable celebrities, influencers and off-duty models.

And yes, in case you’re quick to point out that they shouldn’t be brought into consideration, we’re just as interested in the outfits they present runway-side in addition to the collections presented on the runway. Attendees are an attraction in their own right, in addition to all the previously mentioned points.

This season saw many familiar front row faces in Gigi and Bella Hadid, Kendall Jenner, Katie Holmes and Emily Blunt, as well as a few unexpected ones in Miley Cyrus and Linda Cardellini, plus a few fresh-faced newcomers including Sadie Sink and Lila Moss.

Dressed in designer outfits each time they stepped out, their fashion in addition to their notable status, warranted our attention.

There was a definite moment recently, when Bella Hadid sashayed down the runway at Brandon Maxwell’s show in New York, that seemed to set the tone for the season. It wasn’t so much the mint-green strapless midi-dress she was sporting as the ultra-toned expanse of flesh on display – upper back, shoulders, arms and neckline – that turned heads. While we may be transitioning out of singlet weather, the message was clear: shoulders are front and centre.

Elsewhere this season, hemlines took a hiatus in favour of a new upper-body erogenous zone. At Versace, Isabel Marant and Marc Jacobs, toned limbs provided the ultimate coat-hanger for the artful drape of off-the-shoulder garbs, and at Givenchy, even when shoulders weren’t on display, they were put to good use with clever suiting that made them seem all the more angular and apparent. Peekaboo flashes of shoulder via creative cut-outs showed up at Jonathan Simkhai and Roland Mouret, too.

And at Erdem, while the runway was awash with ballooning, show-stopper sleeves, it was the interjecting strapless looks that spoke volumes.

The top half is now also top of mind in the gym, with Sydney’s best trainers seeing a switch in thinking from Instagram-annointed ‘leg days’ to a focus on the region from the waist up.

“Everyone wants toned arms,” says Fluidform Pilates director Kirsten King, whose client list includes fashion designer Pip Edwards and influencer Nicole Warne, who visited King’s Waterloo studio in Sydney religiously in the lead-up her to wedding (notably, her toned shoulder-line was on full display in her ivory Valentino gown). The key to long, toned limbs, she says, starts first with strengthening through the upper back and shoulders, which has a knock-on effect throughout the rest of the body. “When you don’t have strength through your upper back and shoulders, it makes it almost impossible to get tone through your arms without injury or bulking the wrong area,” she says, stressing the importance of the stabilising muscles and muscle groups that create the appearance of length and tone.

Sydney-based personal trainer Ricardo Riskalla agrees that when it comes to the upper body, it pays to take a holistic view. “Like all body parts, it is important to analyse the body as a whole and create balance between lower and upper body.” When toning shoulders and arms, he says the simplest methods that utilise your own body weight are the most effective. “That will avoid bulking up and will result in amazing arms and shoulders,” he notes. “Secondly, make sure all exercises are performed in high repetitions: instead of doing sets, think about doing the same exercise for five minutes or more.”

If you’re of the school of thought that strength training, particularly when it comes to the upper body, will add unnecessary bulk, it’s time to retrain your thinking. A game-changing study by the University of California found that, particularly as we age, our quantity of muscle mass is strongly linked with life span: the stronger we are, the longer we live. And women especially can benefit from lifting: resistance training aids bone density, a vital concern for ageing women, whose levels of the bone-protecting hormone oestrogen deplete after menopause.

Upper-body strength training may also complement high-intensity interval training (HIIT) workouts, which have found favour among time-poor women looking for maximum results. These cortisol-inducing intense workouts, while beneficial if done properly, can lead to injury if they’re not interspersed with resistance and strength sessions. “Muscles are like elastics that have the power to move our bones in several directions,” enthuses Riskalla, noting this flexibility reduces the risk of injury. Runners can also benefit from an upper-body workout. According to a 2015 paper by University of Madrid researchers, when runners included two to three strength sessions per week in their training regimen, they saw better ‘running economy’, that is, they utilised three to four per cent less oxygen when running.

With our wardrobes set to be peppered with these shoulder-endorsing looks, it also puts the spotlight back on another crucial element: posture. No number of repetitions will correct lousy alignment, says King, noting it as the central factor for general strength. “The most important area to focus on when trying to achieve overall tone in the body is your posture. What people don’t realise is if their body is not in its optimal posture they will struggle to connect with their core muscles.”

Beyond the gym, a strong back and shoulders and a proud posture may even help us mentally. In a 2015 study, researchers found that a sturdy posture can increase positive thoughts, and sitting upright might even help build resilience in stressful situations.

Want to appear stronger or more confident in work situations? Your upper body might help with that, too. In the second most-watched TED talk of all time, Harvard Business School associate professor Amy Cuddy popularised the term ‘power pose’: the notion that an expansive posture – strong shoulders, hands on hips – has the ability to make us feel more powerful and robust, particularly in a corporate environment. Hadid’s aforementioned runway stride might be a far cry from your typical corporate set-up, but if her strong-shouldered stance signalled anything this season it’s that she’s rightfully not lacking in the confidence department. And that’s something we could all learn from.

The Brazil international striker claims to be happy at the Etihad Stadium and expects to be back alongside his Argentine colleague next season

Gabriel Jesus claims it is “out of the question” that both he and Sergio Aguero will leave Manchester City this summer.

The Brazil international expects Pep Guardiola to have a full complement of strikers at his disposal next season.

That means neither of his current leading men will be heading for the exits.

Both have seen moves elsewhere mooted with another transfer window open.

Aguero, who remains a model of consistency for City, has admitted that he will be returning to Independiente in his native Argentina at some stage.

Jesus, meanwhile, has been linked with a switch after slipping down the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium.

With Aguero established as first choice, the other South American forward has had to be patient and make the most of the opportunities that do come his way.

Jesus insists he is happy with that standing for now, with the 22-year-old telling the Daily Mail of the transfer talk which has been building at the Etihad Stadium: “I think it’s out of the question that Aguero leaves and me too.

“[Aguero] is a legend at the club – he’s the top scorer [of all time].

“Obviously as a player I always want to play, but I’m happy to help and I respect Sergio.”

Jesus wrapped up his 2018-19 campaign at club level in style, bagging a brace in a crushing 6-0 FA Cup final victory for City over Watford.

Raheem Sterling came close to taking one of those efforts off him, but the goal was eventually credited to Jesus and he ended the season with 21 across all competitions.

“It was a very important final, the last game of the season and I was happy to be able to score in such an important fixture,” he added.

On top of the goals he registered last season, Jesus also provided six assists for grateful team-mates.

His value to the City cause is obvious, contributing to Premier League, Carabao Cup and FA Cup successes in 2019, helping the Blues to secure an historic domestic treble, and will be chasing down more honours next term.

Prior to that, though, he has a Copa America campaign to contend with.

Brazil opened their bid for international glory on home soil with a 3-0 victory over Bolivia, with Jesus seeing 25 minutes off the bench in that contest.

With the former Napoli coach’s contentious move from London to Turin now confirmed, Goal looks at the pros and cons for everyone involved

Last Saturday, a documentary based on Maurizio Sarri received its grand premiere in Bologna.

It should have been a joyous occasion for everyone involved, a celebration of one of the game’s more eccentric characters.

Click Here: collingwood magpies 2019 training guernsey

However, the unveiling of Francesco Inglese’s ‘Maurizio, Il Sarrismo: A marvellous anomaly’ was overshadowed by the news that the revered Tuscan coach was poised to join Juventus.

“We ‘sarristi’ still can’t believe it,” actor Massimiliano Gallo, who worked as a narrator on the film, told the Gazzetta dello Sport last week.

“If it should really happen, we’re not ruling out the possibility of even withdrawing the film!”

Given Sarri’s appointment as Juventus coach is now confirmed, the first showing of ‘Maurizio’ could well be its last.

The Tuscan’s decision to take charge of the Serie A superpower which he had so thrillingly tried to take down during his memorable spell in charge of Napoli has proven a hugely divisive issue in Italy.

Napoli fans such as Gallo view it as an act of betrayal, not only of their love for Sarri, but also everything for which he stands, while some Juve supporters are excited by the prospect of seeing their brutally efficient but painfully uninspiring side finally embracing ‘The Beautiful Game’.

With that in mind, Goal looks at the most high-profile winners and losers from one of the most intriguing transfers of the summer so far…

Arguably the biggest loser in all of this is Jorginho, the player who personifies ‘Sarrismo’.

Remember, the midfield metronome had agreed to join Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City last summer only for Napoli president Aurelio De Laurentiis to intervene and insist that he instead move to Chelsea so that he could get his desired €8 million (£7m/$9m) pay-off from Chelsea for Sarri’s switch to Stamford Bridge.

Now, Jorginho has been left all alone in London.

So often made the scapegoat by Chelsea fans for his team-mates’ struggles with Sarri’s system, the 27-year-old now faces an anxious to wait to see whether the club’s new manager will view his nuanced brand of playmaking with as much disdain.

Indeed, the incoming coach could well decide to restore N’Golo Kante to his preferred position in front of the defence and send Jorginho packing.

Guardiola will be monitoring the situation with particular interest…

As we saw during the Euro 2016 final, Cristiano Ronaldo has no issues with assuming the role of coach.

Now, it seems, he is just as willing to embrace the role of sporting director, with the Portuguese determined to play his part in Juve’s summer recruitment strategy.

The forward made a very public bid to persuade in-demand Netherlands defender Matthijs de Ligt to move to the Allianz Stadium at the end of the Nations League final, while it is also believed he is privately trying to persuade former Real Madrid team-mate Marcelo to join him in Italy.

Having seen Juve eliminated at the quarter-final stage of last season’s Champions League, Ronaldo clearly believes that the Old Lady needs more quality.

However, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner also shares the widely held view that the Bianconeri need to be more pro-active, particularly in Europe.

Ronaldo enjoyed an excellent relationship with Allegri but, during several games last season, he was left visibly frustrated by the lack of control Juve exerted over games.

In that sense, he will welcome the arrival of a possession-obsessed coach such as Sarri.

Ronaldo championed the appointment of Jose Mourinho as Allegri’s successor – like his compatriot, CR7 prioritises winning football over beautiful football – but he should enjoy playing for a team that will give him more opportunities than last season to give him exactly what he wants: the ball.

Many Chelsea fans will see themselves as winners in all of this.

After all, they are back in the Champions League, embarrassed London rivals Arsenal in the Europa League final and, most importantly of all, have finally got rid of Sarri.

However, it is impossible to view those ‘supporters’ with anything but the same level of contempt in which they – and several members of the British press – held Sarri.

The Italian surpassed all expectations in his first season at Stamford Bridge by finishing third in the Premier League, reaching the final of the League Cup and winning a major European trophy – all the while overseeing the implementation of a radically different footballing philosophy to that of his predecessor, Antonio Conte.

Yet as soon as the going got tough after an 18-game unbeaten start to the season – which was inevitable during a season of such ambitious transition – a significant chunk of Chelsea fans turned on their manager – and Jorginho, in particular.

‘F*** Sarriball!’ was regularly heard ringing out around the Bridge, as fans grew frustrated with their manager’s perceived stubbornness and alleged reluctance to use academy products.

It was shameful behaviour, a damning indictment of the fans’ ignorance and sense of entitlement.

Say what you will about Manchester City supporters – and their current indignation over the way in which their success is perceived by the press and rival fans – but at least they stood by Guardiola during his difficult first season in the Premier League, as the Catalan was only too happy to remind everyone last week.

Chelsea fans may soon come to regret failing to afford Sarri such patience and understanding.

Make no mistake about it: had Allegri stayed at Juventus, Paulo Dybala’s time in Turin was over.

Nobody was hit harder by Ronaldo’s arrival from Real Madrid last summer than the Argentine attacker.

They clicked instantaneously off the field but never on it. Allegri, thus, asked Dybala to play deeper, “in between the lines”, but the forward unsurprisingly struggled to adapt to the role.

The net result was Dybala following up the most prolific season of his career (26 goals in all competitions) with the worst.

He scored just five times in Serie A and started only 24 games. By the season’s end, he was heading for the exit door at the Allianz Stadium.

Allegri’s departure has changed everything, though.

Indeed, there is now the tantalising prospect of Dybala developing into an even more effective attacker than he was in 2017-18, when one considers the way in which similarly diminutive forwards such as Dries Mertens and Lorenzo Insigne went to a whole other level under Sarri’s tutelage at Napoli.

New Inter boss Antonio Conte is keen to lure Dybala to San Siro, by offering Mauro Icardi – a player the champions have previously pursued – in return.

However, as Goal has revealed, the Old Lady is now reluctant to let go of ‘La Joya’, who should, thus, be granted an unexpected opportunity to re-establish himself as one of Juve’s most valuable players.

“I hear talk of Pep Guardiola,” Andrea Barzagli recently mused, “and it’s nice to dream.”

The reality, though, is that Juventus never had any chance of prising the Catalan coach away from Manchester City this summer.

However, several journalists were adamant that Pep was bound for Turin, and that whipped several fans into a frenzy, particularly on social media.

Right up until this week there were those insisting that Guardiola was on his way, with his presence in Milan sparking hysteria online.

The danger now, of course, is that Sarri’s appointment will feel like an anti-climax to some supporters. Or even worse, a mere stop-gap.

There is widespread appreciation for the job that Sarri did at Napoli. He was viewed as a worthy adversary but that doesn’t mean that everyone viewed him worthy of the Juventus job.

“Sarri has no class, regardless of whether he dresses in a suit or a tracksuit,” former Bianconeri president Giovanni Cobolli Gigli fumed on Radio Kiss Kiss last week.

“I won’t forget the middle finger he flashed at the Juve fans when he was on the team bus. He can stick that finger somewhere else!”

In that context, Sarri could face an even tougher task winning over all of his club’s fans than he did at Chelsea.

La Albiceleste midfielder Giovani Lo Celso hailed Lionel Messi as his side prepare for Sunday’s must-win showdown on Sunday

Lionel Messi’s presence for Argentina is a privilege not a nuisance, team-mate Giovani Lo Celso insisted ahead of the nation’s decisive Copa America clash against Qatar.

Messi and Argentina are in danger of a Copa group-stage elimination as La Albiceleste prepare to face guests Qatar in Porto Alegre on Sunday.

After a 2-0 loss to Colombia and a 1-1 draw against Paraguay from two Group B matches, pressure is on Argentina, with captain Messi firmly in the spotlight.

Messi – the country’s all-time leading scorer – is yet to win a senior trophy with Argentina following back-to-back Copa finals in 2015 and 2016 and a runners-up appearance at the 2014 World Cup.

When asked if Messi’s presence is more a nuisance than an opportunity for young players as Argentina eye their first major title since 1993, Lo Celso hauled the 31-year-old superstar.

“I think not, I see the opposite,” Lo Celso told reporters. “Having Leo as a partner and playing with him is a privilege. On the contrary, it always solves everything.

“In that sense, of course we try to take advantage of it. So having him in training, like in games is a privilege. These are things that do not happen every day, sharing trainings and matches with him.

“When I’m young, I try to observe, to learn a lot. Because it does not always happen and for me it’s a privilege and try to learn as much as I can alongside it.”

Argentina are bottom of Group B, below Qatar on goal difference, though a win and finishing third could be enough to tee Lionel Scaloni’s side progress.

“From a mental and psychological perspective, we’re in good shape because we have the possibility of progressing and if we win we’re in the next round,” Scaloni said.

Scaloni added: “These young people need support, it’s too much pressure on them from life or death. It’s a football match, we have to win and that’s enough.

“I believe they need this support, we know what is happening, but they are young people who need this support and positive thinking to give the best and to make the climate the best possible.”

Scaloni tinkered with his line-up against Paraguay – dropping Sergio Aguero and Angel Di Maria to the bench – and he could make more changes for the Qatar clash.

Asked if Paulo Dybala could play alongside Messi given their similarities, Scaloni responded: “They can play together, they’re two top-level players and they need to work together, which they haven’t done much, but with compromise they could do it.”
