Marseille have had an offer accepted for Bordeaux’s French central midfielder or defender Grégory Sertic worth €2m, according to Le Parisien.

The player is set to join OM on a four year deal, according to the report, whether that means 4.5 or 3.5 is unclear.

Sertic’s Marseille contract was due to expire with Bordeaux at the end of the current campaign.

Celtic striker and French youth international Moussa Dembélé intends to reject all offers made for him this month, according to sources contacted by Get French Football News.

Chelsea, and PSG, have made a play for the former Fulham man in an indirect manner this month, but Dembélé wants to see the season out with Celtic.

PSG Director of Football Patrick Kluivert is an enormous fan of the French forward.

However, if a club in the final hours of the window meets Celtic’s £40m valuation for the player, Dembélé will be helpless but to strongly consider whatever club has come in for him as it would represent an enormous deal financially for the Scottish side.

Speaking to RMC last night, Arsenal defender Laurent Koscielny discussed the future of the club’s boss, Arsène Wenger.

“I think that the squad is still receptive to Arsène Wenger’s message. The manager is there to prepare the players physically, tactically and to bring organisation to the pitch. Aside from that, it is up to the players to do what is necessary on the pitch to win matches. I want him to extend. I have worked under him for seven years, he is someone who I respect enormously.”

Polish international defensive midfielder and PSG man Grzegorz Krychowiak’s adventure with the Ligue 1 champions is becoming increasingly difficult, and, so long as the current coaching and playing hierarchy stays in place, he will strongly consider a summer transfer move.

Le Parisien report that the majority of the PSG squad was upset by Unai Emery’s decision to bring Krychowiak on as a substitute in their 2nd leg clash with Barcelona last week, with the Polish international having spent the previous weeks featuring for the PSG reserve team outfit.

Krychowiak has been surprisingly, largely unimpressive for his new club this season, despite knowing Unai Emery well from their joint time together at Sevilla.

Speaking in an interview with RMC, Real Madrid striker Karim Benzema discussed his continuous non-selection at the hands of the French national team, and admitted that he wants answers.

“It is hard. Especially when you play for a big club like Madrid. Everyone is an international there. It is also hard because I like football, big games and we know that the national team comes with matches at a very high level. Each time that I was able to play for the French national team, I was proud. So when I am not on the list, it is disappointing.”

“In terms of what I have done at Madrid for eight years now, I think that I proved that I still had years ahead of me in the French national team. For a year and a half I have been away from it. I am struggling to cope. Some say that I do not like the national team. If that was the case, I would have said that directly to the manager, because I am a big boy. Given Monaco’s thrilling win in Dortmund, to say nothing of the events that surrounded it, one could be forgiven if Lyon’s Europa League quarterfinal against Besiktas slipped the mind. Les Gones have displayed indifferent form in the league of late, failing to win against ten-man Rennes and losing to relegation scrappers Lorient, but their followers will be in a rather more forgiving mood if they can continue their European adventure.

Tonight’s opponents, Besiktas aren’t quite on the level of Roma, but have displayed their potential, albeit in flashes this season. They top the Turkish league, and a win at Napoli in the Champions’ League group stage should serve ample notice of their ability. Discipline has been an issue, as a draw against bottom side Dynamo Kiev would have seen them progress to the knockout stages, but they finished with nine men in a 6-0 loss.

Team News:

It is that discipline which will leave Besiktas slightly blunted in this first leg, as Vincent Aboubakar, formerly of Lorient and the team’s leading scorer in Europe, will miss out after being sent off against Olympiakos in the round of 16. Cenk Tosun, with 17 goals in the league, is no slouch as an alternative to the Porto loanee, though, and also provides a more physical alternative to Aboubakar.

The Cameroonian will be joined on the sidelines by Ricardo Quaresma, the veteran Portuguese winger who has been the creative fulcrum for Senol Günes’ side. Forced off with a back issue against Trabzonspor at the weekend, his place will likely be taken by former Liverpool man Ryan Babel, who arrived from Deportivo La Coruna in January.

In the rest of Günes’ 4-2-3-1, the team picks itself to a large degree. Benfica loanee Anderson Talisca plays off the striker, making up for Tosun’s relative lack of height with a 6′ 3″ frame and pace to burn, while former Barcelona man Adriano will be pushed forward on the left, with Babel, normally deployed on that side, switching flanks. In central midfield, the veteran Atiba Hutchinson and Oguzhan Ozyakup make an assured pairing, rarely joining the attack (1 goal and 1 assist between them in Europe) but providing the attackers a solid base.

In defence, the veteran Serbian centre back Dusko Tosic will likely shift to left back to allow Adriano to play on the wing. Another winter signing, the Croatian youngster Matej Mitrovic, will partner the Brazilian Marcelo in central defence, giving Besiktas a physically imposing, but not especially quick back line. Turkish international Gökhan Gönül will line up at right back, with Fabricio, impressive in his first season in Turkey, getting the start in goal.

Lyon will also enter this match with a handful of absences; Memphis Depay is cup-tied, and Maxime Gonalons is suspended. Jérémy Morel remains a doubt, but is in the matchday squad, with Rafael potentially ready to play at left back if the veteran is unavailable. If Morel does pass fit, Rafael is the favourite to start ahead of Christophe Jallet at right back, with Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa partnering Mouctar Diakhaby in central defence as Emanuel Mammana continues to recover from a thigh strain, having looked off the pace at the weekend. Even with Morel a doubt, the defence was always fairly simple to predict for Bruno Génésio, but how he aligns the rest of the team remains to be seen.

The smart money is on a 4-2-3-1, with Corentin Tolisso lining up alongside youngster Lucas Tousart in midfield, but a 4-3-3 with Tousart at its base and Jordan Ferri or Sergi Darder in central midfield remains a distinct possibility, not least for the freedom it would afford Tolisso.

If Génésio does opt for the 4-3-3, Mathieu Valbuena and Alexandre Lacazette would start, with Nabil Fékir or Maxwel Cornet on the right. In a 4-2-3-1, Fékir would play off Lacazette, with Cornet or possibly Rachid Ghezzal on the right. Mindful of a tricky trip to Bastia on Sunday afternoon, Génésio might be tempted to rest Fékir, but with third place no longer in the realm of possibility, this competition must take priority as Lyon’s potential route to a Champions’ League return.

Danger Men:

Alexandre Lacazette, Olympique Lyonnais

The striker, likely to be named captain in Gonalons’ absence, has a massive opportunity to prove his value as a leader. He was imperious in the home leg against Roma, scoring a stunning goal and working hard to will his team to a 4-2 victory after twice falling behind, suggesting he may be on his way to rebutting claims that he is poor in big matches. A strong performance here will go a long way towards not only burnishing his reputation but also potentially raising his transfer fee, should he, as expected, depart in the summer.

Anderson Talisca, Besiktas

The lanky attacking midfielder doesn’t boast the most eye-popping statistics, with ten goals and five assists in 25 matches, but absent Vincent Aboubakar and Ricardo Quaresma, the Brazilian will have to influence the match if the Turkish side are to have any hope of progressing. He has gained some level of notoriety with his free kick delivery, but he’s no slouch in open play, either, having scored several impressive goals from a mix of headers and long-range efforts.

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Téléfoot, Chelsea winger Eden Hazard discussed the impending award for Premier League Player of the Year, for which both he and N’Golo Kanté are nominated.

“I hope that it will be him, that would change things a little from being the guy who scores the entire time, who is always making decisive contributions (assists or goals). He is making less decisive contributions on the pitch than an attacker. As well, last year he won it, it would recompense him for the two good seasons that he has done. Speaking in an interview with the Journal du Dimanche, Marseille Sporting Director Andoni Zubizarreta was asked about the possibility of signing Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud.

“He is a great player but I refuse to speculate on particular names.”

Former hooker Bernard Jackman insists that incoming Leinster senior coach Jacques Nienaber could help elevate the Irish side’s game next season.

Nienaber, who will lead South Africa into the 2023 Rugby World Cup, will join the Dublin-based outfit following the conclusion of the global tournament.

He replaces Stuart Lancaster, who has departed the province to take up a role with Racing 92.

Lack of silverware

Lancaster was highly-regarded within the Leinster set-up, but it ended in disappointment as the team once again failed to lift a trophy.

They have not claimed the Champions Cup since 2018, while they have gone two years without tasting domestic glory, but Jackman, who played for the side between 2005 and 2010, but believes that Nienaber could change that.

“Jacques Nienaber is one of the best defence coaches in the world and understands the Irish system but also the Irish players’ mentality having spent time in Munster with Rassie Erasmus,” he wrote in his column for the Irish Independent.

“He will add something new to the team on and off the field, and their defence can be better for sure.

“It rarely gets exposed, to be fair, but as teams look to copy others that have beaten them by keeping the ball, it’s important to be even more destructive in defence and to use it as a weapon.

“Nienaber’s system is high-risk, high-reward and he seems to have an exceptional ability to coach it. All the South African teams try and use a similar system, but no one implements it like he does.

“Nienaber’s defence works well in part because the overall game plan is very much aligned with defence.”

Leadership

Jackman also says that a lack of leadership in the absence of Johnny Sexton could have played a part in their loss to La Rochelle in the Champions Cup final.

“Johnny Sexton’s retirement will leave a massive void on the field but also off it,” he wrote.

“He was huge in the dressing room and a player and character like him is irreplaceable. The likes of James Ryan and Garry Ringrose will step up and do it their way, but Leinster are weaker without him.

“The lack of obvious leaders wasn’t something that jumped out at me when I looked at this Leinster squad even with Sexton injured, but I was interested to hear Dan Leavy say on a podcast a few weeks ago that a lot of the boys are very quiet on and off the field.

“Being quiet doesn’t make you a bad leader, but certainly the way the team reacted to pressure in the last four knock-out games is a concern.”
