L’Équipe report today that Lyon forward Rayan Cherki is closing in on a contract extension with his formative club, with further talks between his entourage and the club to take place today.

The 18-year-old’s current deal will expire at the end of the upcoming season. Lyon had set this weekend as a deadline for a response to their contract offer. Had Cherki turned it down, the club would have turned their attention to engineering a sale before the end of the window, although this was nobody’s preferred option at Lyon.

Not least Jean-Michel Aulas, with the club president personally taking charge of the talks, which had appeared to be going nowhere but over time gained ground. In June, Aulas was publicly indicating that he was confident Cherki would be staying.

The player’s team had made it clear that his salary – currently €200,000 a month – was not the main issue at play, but rather the playing time that he would be guaranteed under Peter Bosz. A new contract would run until 2027, the same length as his fellow academy graduate Maxence Caqueret, who has been looking to convince him to stay.

Cherki made 16 appearances in Ligue 1 last season, although he missed most of the second half of the campaign with a foot injury. Overall, he has played 63 times for OL since making his debut at just 16, scoring nine and assisting ten goals during that time.

During today’s press conference held by Marseille president Pablo Longoria, the Spaniard took the opportunity to reveal a key message that he conveyed to the players during a meeting with Igor Tudor where he reaffirmed some key principles related to the club’s hierarchy: 

Whilst gesticulating different levels with his hands, Longoria affirmed : “There is the club. There is the coach. And then there are the players. Yesterday, we reminded them of all of these things.”

As reported by La Provence, led by captain Dimitri Payet, Marseille’s players held a crunch meeting with the club’s management, including new coach Igor Tudor, last night to air their concerns over the manager’s methods.

The meeting lasted around 100 minutes and opened with president Pablo Longoria addressing the squad, reminding the players of the importance of the collective and the responsibility that comes with playing for a club like Marseille. Longoria was keen not to let rising tensions get out of hand after various players had complained over Tudor’s confrontational style and extremely intense pre-season regime.

In Paris Saint-Germain’s efforts to sign midfielder Renato Sanches – with whom they have had an agreement in principle over personal terms in place since last month – the club are pushing for a deal in the form of a loan with an obligatory permanent clause, according to sources contacted by Get French Football News.

Although the former Bayern Munich man wants to go to the Ligue 1 champions, his current team Lille are more inclined to sell to Milan, who have come in with an offer for a permanent deal. The Rossoneri’s offer amounts to €12m, whereas the PSG bid is set at €15m including bonuses.

As a result of this situation, any progress on a prospective transfer has been at a standstill for the last two weeks. Sanches had previously rejected the Serie A winners’ advances in favour of Paris.

With just one year left on his current deal, the 24-year-old – who made 25 appearances in an injury-ridden campaign last year – could well be on the move this summer, but whether that will be in France or Italy remains to be seen.

Paris Saint-Germain have this afternoon released their squad list for the first match of the Ligue 1 campaign against Clermont on Saturday night, with forward Kylian Mbappé the notable exclusion.

The Frenchman has picked up an adductor issue, and as a result will not travel with the rest of his teammates. Another update on his recovery will be made on Monday, ahead of the match against Montpellier the following weekend.

Last season’s player of the year was also absent from the 4-0 Trophée des Champions win over Nantes in Tel-Aviv last week, having been ruled out due to suspension, with an accumulation of yellow cards from last year carrying over into the new season.

Aside from Mbappé, the PSG squad to kick the campaign off has no other absences due to injury, with Lionel Messi and Neymar both hoping to carry over their impressive pre-season form into Saturday to hit the ground running for their title defence.

Ex-F1 driver Jerome D’Ambrosio has joined Mercedes as its driver development director, but the Belgian will have an opportunity to grow within the team’s organization according to Toto Wolff.

D’Ambrosio has taken over the responsibilities previously assumed by now Williams team boss James Vowles with regard to Mercedes’ junior driver programme and the management of its young talent. But the three-time Formula E winner will also oversee simulator driver development at Brackley.

However, D’Ambrosio won’t be on his own as he’ll be working alongside long-standing Mercedes-AMG driver development advisor Gwen Lagrue.

“He’s looking after the young driver programme in very close cooperation with Gwen [Lagrue], who has been doing it very successfully over the last few years,” explained Wolff, quoted by RaceFans.

“With Gwen’s team we are looking at grassroots motorsports from the early stages of go-karts. This is where Gwen is very active, he was the one working with James, and now within the Brackley structure it’s Jerome who has taken that over.

“He’s looking at things and there’s plenty of plenty of scope that James did beyond the strategy work. So I see Jerome growing in the organisation, but at this stage, that’s his area.”
