Western Force coach Simon Cron admits there's plenty to fix in his new-look Super Rugby Pacific side after they suffered a pummelling from the Queensland Reds.The Force went into Saturday's trial in Perth with high hopes, only to see them dashed 45-10 by the Reds.Cron was quick to identify areas that need to be fixed before his side's next trial against Fijian Drua on February 16."We didn't get past one or two phases. We'd get stripped, drop it, or try to throw a miracle pass," Cron said."As a team we've got to learn what it looks like to build pressure."To build pressure you've got to make them tackle you and to make them tackle you, you've got to hold the ball."We had a tendency to not look after the ball and throw it away. Patience is critical and we lacked that."We go back and look at the critical few things. Why we didn't build pressure through phase play and why we were slow in our transition defence."Reds coach Brad Thorn was happy with the result, having seen his side outscore the Force six tries to two.But he wasn't getting carried away. "We got a hit out," a circumspect Thorn said."You don't get too excited around trial games. It's a trial game. Of his form, which has included nine goals and seven assists already this season, the 30-year-old said: “I’m in good physical shape and I’m happy. We started the season well by winning a trophy, and I scored goals and made assists. I don’t think it could be better.”

On Messi, the Brazilian explained: “I’ve known Leo for a long time. I was able to help him on the pitch and in training by talking with him. It’s hard to make such a change because he was at Barcelona for several years, and now everything has changed for him and his family. It’s hard, but I think he’s getting better now, he feels at home. I want him to have fun, and I want us to have fun together. We know we have a lot of challenges ahead of us, but I’m sure we can overcome them.”

Ireland skipper Johnny Sexton confirmed that he is fit and ready to play against France for the first time in three years ahead of the massive showdown on Saturday.

Sexton has passed a head injury assessment (HIA) and recovered from a dead leg in time for Saturday’s game, which could be definitive in the title race.

The playmaker has not played against France since Ireland lost 35-27 in 2020, where the veteran was frustrated for being subbed off during the game.

“No more hiccups”

The Irishman is looking for “no more hiccups” ahead of the massive clash and is looking forward to running out at the Aviva Stadium.

“I was saying this morning, the last two Wednesdays before France over the last two fixtures, I’ve ended up pulling out, so to get through today is great,” said Sexton.

“I can look forward to the game, hopefully no more hiccups.

“Obviously, the confusion around the HIA and stuff like that, there’s nothing I can control about that, but I’ll be ready to go for 80 this week if needed.

“It feels like a huge game. There’s no point in saying anything otherwise.

“You can’t just come in here and say ‘it’s just another game’ because it’s not, it’s one we’ve waited a long time for and I’ve read that they want this test – to come to the Aviva and try and overturn us. It’s a huge game.”

Fixing past memory

Sexton knows it is a big clash against their biggest title rivals this year and wants to set memories from years gone straight with a win on Saturday.

“They are always big weeks, often for me something comes out of the woodwork in French week and I’m expecting something later in the week,” he said.

“It’s always a big game; I grew up in an era of watching Ireland lose to France, heavily, to then sort of see the first teams beating them and then to be part of teams beating them has been amazing.

“But you still have those memories from a young kid of France coming and demolishing Ireland. You probably naturally feel the underdog at my age, whereas the younger lads probably don’t. It’s a strange mixture in the squad.”

Favourites tag

France fly-half Romain Ntamack labelled Ireland as favourites for the clash, which does not bother Sexton.

“I don’t really mind, the favourites tag is not something we mention internally,” he said

“Being number one in the world, the public or the press will do it or the opposition will, but it comes down to the performance on the day.

“If we’re favourites, we’re favourites. It doesn’t really bother me if that’s what he says.”

Speaking before Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League group fixture against Maccabi Haifa, Brazilian club captain Marquinhos spoke about centre-back partner Sergio Ramos – and how he has learned a great deal from the experienced spaniard since his arrival to Paris Saint-Germain, as transcribed by L’Équipe.

“I am someone who is always looking to improve. Even more so when you have great champions next to you. I’ve seen great champions come and go here, I’ve tried to take a bit of each one. After being sent off nine seconds into Nice’s 1-0 loss to Angers on Sunday, defender Jean-Clair Todibo reacted publicly on Twitter – lamenting the referee’s decision, and calling for the Ligue de Football Professionel to take action.

“A referee decision which shocks me and which condemns my team to start the match with a big disadvantage. The referees’ decisions at the start of the season are highly questionable, even scandalous, and I hope the LFP will do something about it.”

In the first nine seconds, Todibo did bring down Angers forward Abdallah Sima – Nice would argue that even though Sima was clear on goal, that other Nice defenders such as Dante was actually in the position of the last man, and this didn’t warrant the red card. Manager Lucien Favre has also voiced his displeasure at the red card, saying that “For me, there is no red because (Todibo) is covered. Before he touched the ground, the referee had already shown the card.”

England centurion Ben Youngs is one of those to have paid the price for their 29-23 Calcutta Cup defeat to Scotland last weekend.

The scrum-half, who is the country’s most capped male player, was a key part of the squad during Eddie Jones’ tenure, but he has lasted just one match under Steve Borthwick having been dropped for this weekend’s clash against Italy.

Jack van Poortvliet started the game on Saturday with Youngs coming off the bench in the second period, but the 33-year-old struggled.

Poor kicking

His errant up and under in the 73rd minute, which went far too long, allowed the Scots to counter-attack and eventually led to the winning try.

He then, with England looking to respond and inside the opposition 22, kicked the ball away when his side had a penalty advantage.

Van Poortvliet has kept his place in the squad and he is joined by Northampton Saints scrum-half Alex Mitchell, who looks set to be among the replacements this weekend.

Elsewhere in the backline, Anthony Watson is missing from the reduced 29-man training group with youngster Henry Arundell straight back in after recovering from injury.

Centre duo make the cut

Henry Slade and Manu Tuilagi also make it after being absent for their Six Nations opener against Scotland.

Up front, Ben Curry has been axed after missing a key tackle on Ben White, resulting in the scrum-half scoring a try.

That means Jack Willis is back involved and could be set to start against the Italians at Twickenham.

Willis will likely be competing with Ben Earl for the openside flanker berth.

Finally, Mako Vunipola has retained his place after fellow loosehead prop Bevan Rodd was released from the squad.

Fabián Ruiz made the switch to Paris Saint-Germain from Napoli in the late hours of the 2022 summer transfer window. 

While giving an interview to El Pais, the Spaniard admitted that he could not say no to the proposal from a club like PSG. He said:

“Once the offer arrived, which we all thought was good, you couldn’t say no to a club like PSG. I had one year left on my contract, and both Napoli and I had an interest in finding another place. I think it was a good choice. It happened while I was focused on the pre-season with Napoli. 

“My agents called me to inform me that PSG was interested, and then, I spoke with Luis Campos who explained the project to me. Later I also spoke with coach Galtier, who explained his way of playing, and his ideas.

“Those conversations were very nice, they gave me confidence, that desire to be here with them, to work together.”

Since moving to the French capital, the 26-year-old midfielder has made three appearances, including one in the Champions League and two Ligue 1 appearances as a second-half substitute. Apparently signed as a replacement for Leandro Paredes, Ruiz is bound to PSG’s contract until June 2027. 

Speaking in a documentary from Scandinavian outlet Viaplay, as quoted by Culture PSG, Erling Haaland’s father, Alfie, ranked his son’s top four preferred destinations before he left Borussia Dortmund this summer.

The Norwegian striker eventually joined Manchester City, where the 22-year-old has already netted 14 goals in nine games across the Premier League and Champions League, but Haaland was linked with seemingly every major European club over the last year before leaving for England.

In the documentary, Alfie Haaland, also once a Manchester City player, is heard saying: “On our list, I think that Manchester City is the best team. Bayern Munich are number two. We have Real Madrid as number three, Paris Saint-Germain as number four.”

However, hope remains for PSG and other clubs as Haaland Snr. also states that “I think Erling wants to prove his abilities in all the leagues. He can then stay there for three or four years at most. It could be, for example – two and a half years in Germany, two and a half years in England and then Spain, Italy and France.”

Both Haalands signed a lucrative deal with Viaplay which lead to this documentary, Erling becoming the company’s face in nine European countries and Alfie being drafted in as a pundit for their football coverage.

It has been a difficult start to the European campaign for Igor Tudor, with Marseille staying winless in the 2022/23 Champions League campaign thus far.

While speaking to RMC Sport ahead of OM’s Champions League clash against Sporting CP, Tudor epitomised his team’s positive mindset going into another tough match against the current toppers of Group D. The manager said:
