Stoke vs Arsenal featured a bizarre turn of events with one goal being disallowed at one end followed by an immediate score at the other. Harvey Kinkel was confused.

Before being eliminated by Basel, Brendan Rodgers thought Liverpool could still win the Champions League. The Hooded Biscuit wasn’t so sure.

Jamie Carragher eviscerated the defending of Per Mertesacker in the build-up to Jon Walters goal and the man himself was fairly pleased.

Andy Carroll said he thinks West Ham can win the league and Robert O’Farrell (sarcastically) agrees.

St Vincent’s did some MMA training in the build-up to their Leinster SFC final but Sean Lawlor thinks they should be focusing on the more traditional skills.

Some of Liverpool’s summer signings have underperformed and Sean O’Neill thinks it might be time for the club to cut their losses.

Joe Schmidt won the Phillips Manager of the Year award and Dublin Dweller speculated as to who might have come second.

FPL Talk chronicled all the ridiculous happenings in Spurs’ Europa League campaign so far.

IRELAND TIGHTHEAD MIKE Ross has agreed a one-year extension to his central contract, keeping him at Leinster until the summer of 2016.

The 44-cap international remains a cornerstone of the scrum for country and province this season and the new deal will keep tied to both beyond next year’s World Cup and the prop’s 36th birthday.

“There is a huge amount of talent in the squad and it is an exciting time to be involved with both Leinster and Ireland,” says the Corkman.

“The next 12 months will be incredibly busy and challenging but also has the potential to be very rewarding too.”

IRFU performance director David Nucifora, added:

“Mike has shown his value at both provincial and national level over the past number of seasons and we are delighted that we have secured his services until the end of the 2016 season.”

MUNSTER HAVE TODAY announced four contract renewals with out-half Ian Keatley’s new deal the stand-out.

The Dubliner will now remain with Munster until at least 2017, extending his time in the province having moved south from Connacht in 2011.

The notable absentee from the list of contract renewals was JJ Hanrahan.

“We are extremely pleased that this group of players have committed their talents to the province,” head coach Anthony Foley said in a statement.

“Ian is into his fourth season with us and continues to grow, and impress. He leads by example with his commitment and attitude and we are fortunate to have him in our side. He showed great composure last week to kick in difficult conditions and like great tens before him he can certainly kick a drop-goal when needed.”

Ireland under 20 captain Jack O’Donoghue has signed on for a total of three years. The Waterford man will be on a development contract next season before moving to a full contract for two years from 2016.

Current development players Cian Bohane and Shane Buckley have had their contracts extended by a year, with Bohane another penciled in for a senior contract in 2016.

The province have also handed a short-term development contract to hooker Kevin O’Byrne who joined the squad on a training contract at the beginning of this season. O’Byrne’s development deal runs until the end of this campaign.

“It is always rewarding when securing up and coming home-grown talent such as Bohane, Buckley, O’Byrne and O’Donoghue,” added Foley.

“We have guys that are highly sought after in a competitive environment and it’s great for our squad to know that these guys want to contribute to their home province and compete for the jersey. We have only seen glimpses of what these young players can do and we look forward to guiding their development.”

HELEN O’REILLY IS set to become the first-ever female referee of a men’s All-Ireland League game when she takes charge of Sundays Well’s meeting with Kanturk at Musgrave Park this evening [KO 19.30].

O’Reilly was appointed to the IRFU’s national panel of referees in December and is enjoying an ever-growing reputation within the sport.

The Dubliner, who previously played for Ashbourne and St. Mary’s, officiated the opening game of last year’s Women’s Rugby World Cup in France, when the hosts met Wales.

O’Reilly became the first Irish female referee to take charge of a Women’s Six Nations match in 2013, having started out with fixtures in the Women’s All-Ireland League.

The latest landmark in O’Reilly’s impressive career will come this evening with her first Ulster Bank League fixture, as Kanturk clash with Sundays Well on the resumption of the Division 2B action.

O’Reilly’s status as a member of the IRFU’s refereeing panel means she could end up involved in Pro12 and Champions Cup games.

AUSTRALIAN RUGBY HAS been in disarray for most of the last three years but one bright spark throughout has been the magical play of league convert Israel Folau in the back three. A lot was expected of the three-sport star when he crossed over to union in 2013 and he has matched even the most lofty of expectations since.

Some of his sidesteps on the Lions tour bamboozled some solid defenders, including Irish out-half Johnny Sexton.

Source: Empired6/YouTube

Folau has wreaked his on-field havoc from the back three thus far for club and country but reports in Australia say that he wants to move to centre.

And since teams have begun to kick away from him, Michael Cheika, who coaches Folau with the Waratahs and Australia, is seriously considering the move.

The prospect of Folau at 12 or 13 is very interesting and you would think his skills are probably more suited to the outside channel. Cheika didn’t put a timetable on the proposed switch but would it be possible to test it out when Sonny Bill Williams and the Chiefs play the ‘Tahs in a friendly in two weeks time?

Seeing the two most talented converts go head-to-head with each other would unbelievable for the neutral.

Please Cheiks, think of the neutral!

IT’S BEEN A long wait for fans of Tullow’s finest rugby export.

Friday evening sees Sean O’Brien makes his eagerly-awaited first appearance of a year that promises so much for Ireland. They defend their Six Nations title from next weekend and then look towards a World Cup in September and October.

Getting O’Brien back to peak fitness and form in the coming weeks and months will be a priority for Joe Schmidt, given the 27-year-old’s world-class ability.

The first stop down that route – following two shoulder reconstructions in the last 14 months – is an appearance for the Ireland Wolfhounds against the England Saxons on Friday evening in Musgrave Park [KO 19.45].

We can safely say that the ultra-competitive O’Brien will be eyeing a start against Italy in Rome a week after this fixture, but for now, the rest of the Ireland Wolfhounds team are pleased to have O’Brien on their side.

Not that the likes of Fergus McFadden and the rest of the Leinster contingent went easy on O’Brien during his most recent spell on the sidelines.

“He’s a massive player for Irish and Leinster rugby, so it’s great to see him back after all that trouble he had with the shoulder.”

There was a brief return at the beginning of the current season, before the flanker was forced to go under the knife again. O’Brien will look to forget those travails with his first carry or hit against the Saxons, and McFadden underlines the quality that his teammate can bring.

“He’s shown that he’s got an X-factor in fairness, you know? Between his carries, his work rate and his chat off the field as well, he is a real leader.

Dan McFarland has taken charge of the Wolfhounds this week, and the Connacht forwards coach was succinct in summing up where O’Brien stands ahead of his return.

“I’ve been here all week and Sean’s had a real bounce in his step,” said McFarland. “There’s a really hungry young man wanting to get back on the pitch.”

McFarland, Schmidt and the Ireland set-up will be joined by rugby fans across the nation in welcoming the high-quality flanker back into the game in Cork. The Saxons might be best advised not to get in his way.
