Becker Improves to 15-1 at North Country Open

COLLEGEVILLE, Minn. β Saint John’s wrestling hosted its annual North Country Open on Saturday, Jan. 25, in Sexton Arena.
The tournament featured 143 wrestlers, split into gold and silver divisions, and included wrestlers from Augsburg, Division II Augustana (S.D.), Division I Minnesota, Division II MSU-Mankato, NAIA Morningside, Division I North Dakota State, Northland C.C., Division II St. Cloud State, Division II Southwest Minnesota State, St. Olaf and Wisconsin-Eau Claire.
Senior Noah Becker (Browerville, Minn.) went 2-0 at 133 pounds before exiting the tournament. He started his day with a pin in 26 seconds and posted a 10-5 decision over Kyle Burwick from Division I Wisconsin. Becker is ranked as high as No. 3 nationally by D3wrestle.com and is now 15-1 on the year.
Senior Quincy Spiering (Mounds View, Minn./St. Thomas Academy) finished third at heavyweight in the silver bracket with a 3-1 record. He lost his opening-round match and advanced to the third-place match thanks to a pair of medical forfeits. Spiering took third with a first-period pin of Augsburg’s Luke Zaiser and is now 8-8 this season.
Seniors Dan Gainer (St. Paul, Minn./Cretin-Derham Hall) and Anthony Hennen (Cologne, Minn./Norwood-Young America) both went 2-2 to claim fifth place at 174 and 141 pounds, respectively, in the silver bracket.
