Twenty nine years after its imposition, the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act is set to be withdrawn from Assam in August, and the Centre has already asked the Army to plan its return from the state.

It was on November 27, 1990 — when Ulfa militancy was at its peak — that the entire state was declared a “disturbed area” and AFPSA, which grants special powers to the armed forces while conducting counter-insurgency operations, was imposed.

Over the years, the Army has gradually withdrawn from several districts as the situation improved. Police and paramilitary forces have taken the Army’s place.

Pirelli rules out tyre failures in FP1

November 28, 2019 | News | No Comments

Pirelli has confirmed none of the failures suffered in FP1 by Williams and Renault were caused by the tyres.

Felipe Massa went off under braking at Turn 6 with a left rear puncture, before later rejoining the track and suffering a second puncture of the same tyre on the long back straight. Those problems were soon followed by Kevin Magnussen appearing on the same straight with a broken left rear suspension and deflated tyre. On each occasion the soft tyres were being used.

The session was red flagged while the track was cleared of debris, with Pirelli undertaking investigations to determine the cause of the problems and ruling out any issue with the tyres ahead of FP2.

“After full investigation and full sharing with the team, we confirm that no one of the failures occurred to both Williams and Renault during FP1 are tyre related,” Pirelli said.

Magnussen’s problem saw the Renault driver ruled out of FP2, while Massa was able to run during the afternoon session. Massa himself said at the end of FP1 that Williams believed bodywork was the cause of his failures.

Laurent Schenck

Palmer uses video game to learn Baku

November 28, 2019 | News | No Comments

Jolyon Palmer has taken to using a video game to learn the new Baku City Circuit ahead of this weekend’s Grand Prix of Europe.

The track in Azerbaijan is a new addition to the calendar, and as a street circuit is still being finished off ahead of track running starting on Friday. As a result, Renault does not have the circuit on its simulator and Palmer says he has been playing video games to get a first impression of the track layout.

“It’s a brand new track so we don’t have it on the simulator, so I’ve done a few laps on the F1 game!” Palmer said. “So I’ve had a little look in advance! My engineers have done their homework but the first real impression will be made when we’re doing the track walk then getting laps on the Friday to learn the circuit. It’ll be the same for everyone.

“I think it looks a cool track, there’s some high speed sections – especially for a street circuit – and overtaking is a possibility. The crazy middle sector looks difficult with its undulation and the sector looks very tight. Any mistakes on a street circuit tend to mean you’re into the wall, so you have to be alert.”

Despite having to retire from the Canadian Grand Prix due to a water leak, Palmer is happy with the progress being made by Renault even if the results have yet to follow.

“We made a step forward with the car, but some better luck and finishes would be good now. I’m happy with the progress being made for the rest of the season. Okay, I can’t be happy at not finishing in Montréal, but the new engine is a step forward and it’s worth a lot of time. The team are pushing hard, we’re finding stuff on the car and the engine is working well. There’s a little pain now, but I’m sure we’ll be looking better for going through it.”

Daniel Ricciardo took only little comfort in his team mate’s win in today’s Spanish GP, feeling disappointed by the fact that his race was determined by the least productive strategy call of two available options.

Ricciardo and Red Bull opted for a three-stop strategy which even Pirelli acknowledged as the fastest plan in the 66 lap race, and while he did indeed to appear in the running for a win, the plan of action felt short of the Australian’s expectation.

Adding insult to injury, the Red Bull driver suffered a puncture on the penultimate lap  as he was locked in a superb battle for a podium finish with Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel.

“Obviously in hindsight it [the strategy] was the wrong thing to do,” explained a frustrated Ricciardo.

“When you are leading the race, to then say alright let’s still try and win but pass three cars, when you don’t have the quickest car down the straight, and it is not the easiest place to overtake. I am not really sure why that was the case today.

“So mixed emotions to be not even anywhere on the podium, it sort of sucks, and then the puncture at the end just put salt into the wounds. So, yeah, so it is quite frustrating.”

Despite his clear disappointment, and in light of his team mate’s victory, Ricciardo was quick to praise Max Verstappen for his maiden Grand Prix triumph.

“I mean, sure, it is every man for himself out there, and I am bitter right now. Not bitter obviously with Max, not at all, he did what he had to do. But I am just bitter at the situation.

“Max did the job today and got the win. Obviously a big accomplishment for him in his first race with the team.

“Once again, when he came into F1, everyone questioned it. And then the moves [to Red Bull] during the week, they questioned it, but he proved today that he is a top class driver.”

Laetitia Forhan

LIVE: Monaco Grand Prix

Follow F1i’s live, as-it-happens coverage of the 2016 Formula One Monaco Grand Prix!

It’s time for one of the absolute highlights of the entire season, a race which is so much of a part of the sport’s DNA code that the very sight of the iconic street circuit is enough to get a true motorsport fans’s heart pumping that bit quicker even before the lights go out for the sixth Grand Prix of 2016.

  • LIVE: Monaco Grand Prix – FP3

Right from the first free practice sessions on Thursday it’s been clear that Monaco is likely to give us something just a little bit extra special this year, with Mercedes no longer looking invincible. While Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton insist they’ve moved on from their unfortunate crash in Spain, a more serious problem has become clear to them: the sudden rise of Red Bull.

Daniel Ricciardo rocked the paddock by beating the Mercedes pair by over six tenths of a second on Thursday, and he then went on to clinch an emphatic pole position in qualifying on Saturday. He also played a strategy card by making his fastest Q2 run on supersoft tyres which should have been the set he was able to start the race itself on – but heavy rain on Sunday morning has put a spanner in the works if everyone is required to start on wet tyres instead.

Rosberg seemed happy enough with the second front row position for today’s race, but Hamilton looked distinctly unimpressed with third place after his his final qualifying lap was disrupted by a fuel pressure issue. He’s in a precarious position for the start, as he’ll have to make sure he doesn’t make contact with Rosberg into Ste Devote while not giving away position to Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel who starts from fourth place.

Alternating Force India/Toro Rosso drivers fill out the next two rows with Nico Hulkenberg impressing in fifth place alongside Carlos Sainz, and Sergio Perez set to start alongside Daniil Kvyat. Kvyat was the subject of a stewards’ investigation last night after the floor of his car failed post-qualifying technical inspection, but the team argued that it was due to damage after he hit the kerbs in Q3. The stewards accepted that excuse – this time – meaning Kvyat keeps his eighth place on the grid ahead of McLaren’s Fernando Alonso and Williams’ Valtteri Bottas.

Kimi Raikkonen is out of position in 11th place after being handed a five-place grid penalty as a result of Ferrari having to change his gearbox on Saturday. Also out of position is Red Bull’s Max Verstappen who hit the barriers in Q1 before he was able to set a time. Repairs to the driver safety cell mean that he will have to start from the pit lane, as will Sauber’s Felipe Nasr whose engine let go at the start of qualifying.

With the added element of the rain, today should prove to be one of the livlier and more exciting Monaco Grand Prix events. Overtaking is tough here but both Raikkonen and Verstappen will be on a charge. And as for what happens up front between Ricciardo, Rosberg, Hamilton and Vettel when the lights go out – well, that’s anyone’s guess!

It’s all scheduled to get underway at 2pm local time (1pm BST), and F1i will be right here bringing you all the latest news and information from trackside on F1i’s live page the minute that the action gets underway. Don’t miss a second!
