Ciara has had an eventful last few months. In July, the singer-dancer released the upbeat single "Jump." Then a month later, the "1, 2 Step" performer revealed some skin-care goodies underneath her new brand On a Mission, joining the likes of other celebs who have stepped into the beauty business. But in our eyes, arguably the most important change for the star is the super long, fruit punch-hued hair that she wore during Labor Day Weekend.

CiCi debuted her reddish hair, which came courtesy of hairstylist JStay Ready, in an Instagram video posted at the beginning of the long weekend. JStay Ready styled her vivid hair into a half-up, half-down updo with face-framing tendrils reminiscent of the ones from the '90s and early aughts. He twisted the straightened hair at the front in various ways to create the cluster knot at her ponytail base. Though she started the weekend with a sleek and fun updo, she ended it with curls parted straight down the middle, which she posted on Sept 5.

The "Level Up" singer looks like the baddest to ever exist in this photoset. She showed off her top model skills in front of a car with her long magenta hair flowing behind her, a leather shirt, and graphic pants; these colorful crimps looked unbelievably bright and shiny. The last image captures the full beauty and length of these voluminous curls that cascaded past her hips.

This fruit punch hue is definitely a switch for the star, but not completely abnormal if you consider her other looks. Although she is loyal mostly to brunette and blonde shades, she will occasionally show out with technicolor hair like the cobalt blue hairstyle she had in June. There's no knowing when we will be blessed with another colorful wig from the star who graciously gifted us "Goodies" and "Oh," so in the meantime, we'll be staring endlessly at these photos.

What is a Coolant? 

Coolant is fluid used to dissipate heat from equipment, machinery, or systems. Coolant can be utilized to protect a system from overheating or to remove undesirable heat from a system. Coolant is typically pumped through a series of tubes, plates, and fins within a heat exchanger, where it passes next to another fluid that has absorbed heat from the system that needs to be cooled. 

Coolant is used in a variety of applications, including: 

  1. Automotive
  2. Industrial machinery and equipment
  3. HVAC systems
  4. Aerospace
  5. Metalworking

The Importance of CNC Machining Coolant

CNC machining coolant serves the same purpose as coolant in other applications: to remove heat from a system. When a cutting tool contacts a workpiece, it generates heat due to friction between the workpiece and tooling. Coolant is required to maintain proper operating temperatures and prevent overheating that leads to reduced performance, increased tool wear, and equipment failure.

Increased tooling temperature can result in one or more of the following:

  1. Thermal expansion of the part to be machined, which makes it difficult to maintain precision and accuracy due to the changing dimensions (especially with metallic parts)
  2. Accelerated tool wear, because tools wears faster at higher temperatures
  3. Workpiece distortion occurs if high temperatures are sustained over time, which creates quality issues for the finished part

CNC machining coolant mitigates these risks by efficiently dissipating heat to reduce tool wear, and improve overall machining precision and accuracy.

What Happens if You Don’t Use Coolant When CNC Machining?

There are several negative consequences that can occur when machining without coolant, which impact both the machining process and the quality of the finished parts.

  1. Overheating: Overheating leads to thermal expansion in the workpiece and the cutting tool, which can cause dimensional inaccuracies, part warpage, and even damage to the workpiece.
  2. Tool Wear: High temperatures and friction from the cutting action can accelerate tool wear, so proper cooling and lubrication extends the cutting tool’s lifespan. Also, increased tool wear leads to frequent tool changes, additional downtime, increased costs, and decreased productivity.
  3. Chip Clogging: Machining chips can accumulate around the work area and create a messy and unsafe working environment. Coolant lubricates the cutting zone and facilitates efficient chip removal. Without coolant, chips remain in the work area, which causes chip recutting and chip clogging — and results in reduced productivity, excess material removal, undesirable surface finish, or issues with features like internal threads. 
  4. Smearing: Friction between the tool and the workpiece in the absence of coolant can cause smearing, which causes built-up edge formation, and results in rough surfaces, burrs, and other irregularities.
  5. Poor Surface Finish: CNC machining without coolant can cause thermal damage to the workpiece, leaving undesirable marks and discoloration.

CNC machining without coolant compromises the precision, quality, and efficiency of the process. It increases the likelihood of dimensional inaccuracies and workpiece and tool damage, while reducing tool life, and creating a poor surface finish. Coolant is vital for maintaining the temperature control, lubrication, speed, efficiency, and chip evacuation necessary for optimal cutting conditions — and getting consistent and high-quality results.

Types of CNC Machining Coolants

There are many types of CNC machining coolants, each with advantages tailored for specific applications. CNC machining coolants are often referred to as cutting fluids that serve as both coolants and lubricants during the machining process. There are two types of cutting fluids: water-based (aka water-dilutable) and non-water-based (aka neat) coolants. 

There are several types of water-dilutable cutting fluids: soluble, synthetic, and semi-synthetic. Here’s a list of the most commonly used types and the benefits of each:

In the summer of 2010, I traveled to Huntsville, Alabama, to attend a festival at a community workshop called Makers Local 256. A rag-tag group of engineers, artists, hackers, and community leaders from across the country—we all came as representatives from some of the earliest hackerspaces and makerspaces in the U.S., excited to talk about the state of technology, education, and our deep rooted love of open source.

In the muggy Southern heat, eating deep fried Oreos next to a (rather combustible) homemade high-altitude balloon, none of us realized that we were at the cusp of a movement.

What we were inevitably a part of was what is now known as the maker movement, a term coined by Dale Dougherty of Make Magazine: a subculture of engineers, artists, and tinkerers that is fundamentally changing the way we learn, create, and consume. With roots in hacker culture and computer clubs, as much as burner culture and artist collectives, Makers at their core believe in transparency and open source, and share their explorations and learnings widely both on and offline.

In the past few years, I’ve seen more and more makers are permeating the business world. Already, makers are transforming from a subculture to an engine of innovation and creativity, collectively and individually creating new disciplines, new technologies, and even spawning new industries.

However, even as the access to knowledge has increased, the path from maker to entrepreneur is still rife with challenges. Enabling makers with the tools to build better businesses is integral to the sustained success of the maker movement and its ability to move the needle on a global economic scale. To better serve that growth, we need new taxonomies within the maker movement, that ultimately represent steps in a new process of innovation.

States of Making

1. Creators

Creators are the heart of the maker movement, giving rise to the infectious and voracious love of learning that is the hallmark of the community. Interested in the inner workings of the world around them, they dissect objects and infrastructures to find novel new applications of existing technology.

For creators, learning is synonymous with doing, and in their pursuit of knowledge, they build projects. Through creating and then sharing their projects with a wider community, they unwittingly create a culture of playfulness and acceptance of failure as part of the creative process. Creators are largely disinterested in creating objects of monetary value; rather, they are inspired by self-efficacy and optimistic about the base human ability to create.

By sharing their acquired knowledge, creators lower the barriers to entry to technology, whether through online tutorials and teaching classes or by opening hackerspaces, makerspaces, fab labs, or forming other similar community organizations. This is the broad base of knowledge and culture that activates each of the other states.

2. Builders

Builders are the first to tie the threads between culture and enterprise together. Builders are entrepreneurs in their own right, turning projects into products. In the process of project to product, they create morevalue. Builders inherently create products that solve a problem, both for themselves and others.

Builders often address niche interests, producing in small runs, artisanal batches, or bespoke orders. Those who stay in the builder state ultimately develop small businesses capable of supporting them and their endeavors.

For example, TV-B-Gone, a universal remote control that shines light at a TV to turn it on or off, was created by inventor Mitch Altman and is sold online by Altman’s small business, Cornfield Electronics. Drawdio, a circuit that lets users turn household objects into musical instruments, is based on work by Jay Silver in the Lifelong Kindergarten group at the MIT Media Lab and sold online.

3. Producers

Producers are creating more than products; they’re building companies with widespread adoption and brand awareness. With their mass market appeal, they become amplifiers and pillars of the maker movement. littleBits, creators of small electronic building blocks, is a leader of the Open Hardware movement. 3D Robotics grew out of an open robotics community to produce the world’s first smart drone.

At peak scale, many producers choose to give back to the community by partnering with other organizations in the ecosystem. Many large technology corporations, like Microsoft and Intel, have put significant resources into boosting builders’ and other producers’ efforts through sponsorship, support, and other collaborations. Because producers become amplifiers for the community, their potential to sway economic development at a global scale is enormous.

Building Bridges to Innovation

There is a growing demand for bridges in the maker movement—people and organizations that are increasing access to entrepreneurship through new tools and services for both creators and builders. Bridges are responsible for building the knowledge (Make Magazine), tools (Arduino and Othermill), and services (us!) that make it easy to turn a project into a product, and then into a company.

Many bridges have introduced people to making. Companies like Arduino produce the physical parts to learn how to build hardware, while Sparkfun and Adafruit provide marketplaces to buy the necessary tools. Hackster and Instructables provide encouraging communities and tutorials for those tools.

But as more creators grow into builders, we need more bridges to support builders as they seek to become producers. With scale comes added complexity, meaning that software tools are most likely to move the needle. Where crowdfunding platforms like Kickstarter and Indiegogo have democratized access to capital for both creators and builders across industries, we’ll continue to see software platforms build a transparent roadmap from creator to builder, and beyond.

Everyone’s a Maker. Now What?

The maker movement is rapidly growing from a subculture to a global community that is fundamentally changing the way we learn new information, produce goods, and use the things we create. Makers literally and figuratively provide the building blocks of an exciting new way to address global challenges.

When the creators of new ideas, the builders of exciting products, and the producers of innovative companies can connect effectively, the impact will be impressive. And as the barriers to entry are getting ever lower, there’s no better time to become part of the movement and start building physical things.

Design of anti-mildew microcapsules

Researchers have presented anti-mildew microcapsules with chitosan as encapsulant for advanced electronic packaging epoxy coating.

Moisture protection, anti-mildew and anti-corrosion are essential to guarantee the normal service of electronic devices. Although epoxy holds great potential for electronic packaging, its inferior anti-corrosive performance and anti-mildew capability significantly affect the lifespan of the coating and thus impede further technological advances in electronic devices. To address this concern, researchers have fabricated environmental-friendly anti-mildew smart microcapsules (MCs) by encapsulating benzotriazole (BTA) loaded halloysite clay nanotubes (HNTs) with chitosan (CTS). The coating presents superior anti-mildew property with 5 wt% MCs addition.

Significantly promoted anti-corrosive performance

Furthermore, the charge transfer resistance of T2 copper beneath the coating is three orders of magnitude larger after 35 days’ immersion, which confirms a significantly promoted anti-corrosive performance for the coating. Moreover, mechanism study shows that such enhanced corrosion protective performance of proposed coating benefits from an excellent self-healing property enabled by a sustainable release of BTA with water and dual-pH sensitivity as well as effective adsorption of BTA on metal surface.

The review has been published in Progress in Organic Coatings, Volume 180, July 2023.
