80-year-old ex-serviceman Nand Lal, having tears in his eyes, sent shockwaves across the country with his image telling the story of poor Indians during 2016 demonetisation. He was among the millions of Indians forming queues at various banks to exchange the old notes that were declared illegal by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Many helpless people could not sustain the pain of standing for hours and died in the successive days. Nand Lal, with his military training, was able to bear the pain physically, however, emotionally, he was so broken that he could not keep his composure and burst into tears.
His image gave voice to many unheard stories as the world got to know that poor people are bearing the brunt of the scheme that was, according to the government, aimed at bringing back the thousands of crores of Rupees hoarded in cosy homes of the rich people.
