Shawn Mendes provided a status update on his rumoured romance with Camila Cabello

It’s no secret that often when two singers collaborate on a song together, sparks fly; particularly if that song is the romantic variety. The same rules of attraction also ring true for actors who co-star in romantic movies together, think: Twilight’s Kristen Stewart and Robert Pattinson, and The Notebook’s Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams.

In the music world, the latest duo rumoured to have found themselves falling in love while, after (or even possibly in the lead-up to) working together on a song are Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello.

Rumours that the duo — who worked on the hit song Señorita together — were more than just friends recently hit the airwaves, and given they were reportedly spotted out and about on what look liked a number of PDA-packed dates, those rumours seemed to have substance.

Then, on Mendes’s recent 21st birthday on August 8, Cabello made the couple Instagram official — posting a picture of the two of them with the caption, “Happy birthday to this magic human, I love you!!!”

But until now, Mendes has kept pretty quiet about the relationship (despite the clear chemistry when they performed Señorita at the recent 2019 MTV Video Music Awards).

Us Weekly reports after his concert in Connecticut on Friday, the Mercy singer was asked backstage by a fan about his relationship status. “You’ve said you’ve never been love. Has that changed recently?” Us Weekly reports the fan asked. 

In a grainy video uploaded on Twitter, Mendes confirms he’s in a relationship but that he can’t be too candid about how he feels because he has to be considerate of the other person’s feelings. “Honestly, I wanna say I wanna talk to you guys about this stuff but it’s not just me in the relationship! There’s another person involved. I can’t say things that I feel… It’s not just me deciding you know?” 

While the singer didn’t confirm outright that he was talking about his relationship with Cabello, all signs points to the current status of Mendes and Cabello as: “in a relationship”.
